Week 4 [23.11-29.11.2015] Van Gogh Alive Exhibition

Now in Warsaw we can see a very interesting exhibition about the creativity of a popular painter, Vincent Van Gogh. After Berlin, Shanghai, Petersburg, and Florence we can visit this popular exhibition in the center of Warsaw-the Exhibition Center near ‘PGE Narodowy’.

Van Gogh Alive is a modern way to present an art. We can see  big format paintings presented on of  the gallery’s walls. We can admire almost all Van Gogh’s pieces of art in one place, there are about 3 thousand paintings, which are presented in the new technology called SENSORY4. It is a modern media platform. The system displays graphics which are dynamically displayed by 40 projectors, combined with multi-channel cinematic sound, and it creates an exciting art show. Here you can see a substitute of this multimedia exhibition:

Now I want to present some information  about the outstanding artist Vincent Van Gogh.

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch Post-impressionist painter whose work was appreciated after his death. His output mainly includes portraits and landscapes. The most popular paintings are:

  •          The starry night

  •          Vase with Twelve Sunflowers

  •          Self-portrait (1889)

He produced more than 2100 artworks including 860 oil painting and more than 1300 watercolors, drawings and sketches. He was deeply religious as a younger man, because his father was a pastor. After finishing school, he started to work for an art gallery in Paris.  He fell in love but  the woman  broke up with him, and after that he suffered a nervous breakdown. Because he couldn’t live alone in France he came back to his home town where he got a job as an assistant of an English teacher. The important moment of his life was a trip to Brussels in 1880,then he decided to become an artist. When he was 27 he started painting. After next heartbreaks, he fell deeply into depression and was infected with a venereal disease. As a result of neurosis and hallucination, he cut himself the left ear. In 1885 he went to Antwerp where he wanted to start studying, but his modern and exceptional technique didn’t get a recognition. Vincent Van Gogh  moved to Arles in Provence where he created the most popular works. His depression deepened, and he committed a suicide by shooting himself in the chest with a revolver.

Van Gogh Alive is something different from common museum exhibitions, where in a complete silence and deep focus we have to watch only a few paintings presented on  white walls. This puffed up atmosphere can easily discourage people.

An innovative form of Van Gogh Alive is something completely new.  It is designated not only for a connoisseur of art but for all people, even not interested in art. This exhibition connects corresponding music, biography of an artist, and visual effects that will delight all. This exhibition captures the dynamism of his paintings,  a vibrant symphony of lights, colors and sounds, which  will take you into the world of the artist.

  1. 1. What do you think about this way of presenting art?
It's good idea to use new technologies to encourage people to explore art.
Just before Van Gogh Alive, there was an similar, interactive exhibition about Pompey's history on PGE Narodowy. (see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iahYoKm04KQ)

    2. Have you ever seen an exhibition? Did you like it?
No I haven't seen it yet.

    1. Thank you for this link. I think this Pompey's exhibition is more interactive than Van Gogh Alive. This exhibition which I was on was very multimedia, you can only sit and admire the art.

This is a great idea , the exhibition is very interesting , people watching the exhibition feels part of it.
This kind of exhibition will be more interested than the normal exhibition (hanging pictures on ordinary wall)

    2. Have you ever seen an exhibition? Did you like it ?

  4. 1. What do you think about this way of presenting art?

I think that this is a very interesting way of presenting art. Due to big screens displaying paintings, biographies of the atists and the corresponding music we can
better understand feelings of the authors who drew the paintings. We can step into their world. This presentation method won't let us miss out on any paintings unlike the standard paintings presentation - on the white wall. We can have a closer look on the painting. That presentation is as interesting for adults as well as for children.

    2. Have you ever seen any other exhibition? Did you like it?

Yes, I've been many times on various exibitions. Not only have I been to a painting one but I've seen other types such as an exhibition of the Mazovian village or the European Museum of Solidarnosc in Gdansk. The most memorable one was the Louvre exhibition in Paris. There were numerous amazing paintings like the famous Mona Lisa but what impressed me the most was the atmosphere of the place and the amazing Louvre's interior. It was fantastic! I like the modern exhibitions as much I like the older ones. Each of them have a specific and a unique climate.

    3. A painting is a form of expressing yourself, do you have other ways to express your emotions?

Yes, I have. Music is a perfect way to express our emotions - especially playing an instrument or singing. But the way to express myself is something which goes together with music which is dance. I used to dance for eight years. I remember to this day that every single step was a presentation of my feelings. I could show love, anger, sadness in every single dance. It was incredible.

    1. Thank you for your examples of exhibitions that you were on. I would like to see Louvres exhibition in Paris in near feature. I agree with you that modern exhibitions, and traditional exhibitions, have its climate, but for people who are not interested in art, it’s better to start your adventure with art, from this kind of exhibition, that I presented.

  5. 1. What do you think about this way of presenting art?
I think, that this kind of promoting art is very interesting. Showing art and history in modern way is always a good idea. As the technology develops very quickly, we have to suit to its dynamic. Most of the people who was born with smartphones, computers and internet, would probably be interested only in that kind of exhibitions. In my opinion, it would be great, if you could also see some traditional paintings of artists next to digital one. You can see a facture and a brush strokes on a projection, but it will never have a climate as you would watch on original artwork.

    2. Have you ever seen any other exhibition? Did you like it?
Yes, I have seen many, but all of them were traditional ones.

    3. A painting is a form of expressing yourself, do you have other ways to express your emotions?
No I am a man. We do not express our emotions J

  6. To start with standard South Park/Family Guy clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBZEt-LCgbo

I’m quite confused after reading this presentation, so I will go directly to your questions.

    1. What do you think about this way of presenting art?
To be honest – this exhibition didn’t blew me away. It was interesting, but in some way I think it lost the whole idea of going to the art gallery. I really enjoy such installations while going to museum, where animations and video presentations explains some things, but they are only an addition, not the main attraction. So I would say that I give a big “yes” to that kind of presentation, but I’m not quite sure it’s a good thing for presenting art. Here are some links to the videos presenting usage of Augmented Reality not only in museums, but art galleries as well. I think it’s better idea to present exhibitions normally, with additional multimedia things, rather than basing most things on video presentations

    2. Have you ever seen any other exhibition? Did you like it?
I’ve been to many places - museums, art galleries, biology institutes, beer factories or even football stadiums with amazing exhibitions, installations and presentations. Adding interactions to those exhibition, mixing traditional way of showing things with digital is a great way of making people more interested and curious. If you have never been to science museum, I highly recommend Copernicus Science Center! http://www.kopernik.org.pl/. Great way of presenting experiments!

    3. A painting is a form of expressing yourself, do you have other ways to express your emotions?

Yeah, I often cut myself... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_V2oayrdgo

But to be honest I do not need to express myself in any way. For example I love to dance, because of freedom and joy that it provides, but during it I don’t want to show: I’m happy, I’m sad, I’m in pain, because in some way it’s acting. I love to go with the music, synchronize with its flow and rhythm and lose myself in it.

    1. Thank you for your opinion, but I have to say it is a good way of presenting an art, because it can interest greater audience. Through this kind of exhibition we can get to know whole creativeness of an artist and see almost all paintings in one place. It is not reachable in traditional museums, where we can see only few traditional paintings.

I was twice in Copernicus Science Center and I highly recommend to visit this place to everyone who wasn’t there. I also saw the move in the Sky of Copernicus, which was very awesome too.

  7. 1. What do you think about this way of presenting art?
I think that this way of presenting art is very interesting, modern and certainly not boring. This exhibition shows that art and science can complement each other to create amazing experience incomparable to anything else. It is fantastic that during images viewing we can interact with the artist, getting to know his many faces. We can keep track of the successive stages of his work. This way of presenting art can speak to young people, who are not necessarily interested in art or painting.

    2. Have you ever seen any other exhibition? Did you like it?
Yes, I have seen many exibitions, but they were traditional exibitions in galleries and museums. I think that “Van Gogh Alive„ is more interesting than those which I have seen.

    3. A painting is a form of expressing yourself, do you have other ways to express your emotions?
I think that there are many ways to express yourself. One of such ways are tattoos. In the past, tattoos were something extravagant and reserved only for the few. Today is a common and very popular form of body adornment that expresses our feelings, emotion and beliefs. For some people tattoo is a symbol of something important in their life - the date of birth or death of a loved one, their child's name or other significant event in their life. Tattoos can also be motivators - then they are often in the form of a citation or special sign.

  8. 1. What do you think about this way of presenting art?
Exhibitions and museums using multimedia and new technologies are becoming more popular. Thanks to that they finally break with the image of the sad and boring places.
This way is much more interesting than classical method of presenting art. It is also a great way to reach out to more people.

    2. Have you ever seen any other exhibition? Did you like it?
No I haven't seen any yet. But maybe in future I will go to see some exhibition.

    3. A painting is a form of expressing yourself, do you have other ways to express your emotions?
There are many forms of expressing your emotions. Simplest way is just talking - you can describe it by words, but you can also change the tone and increase and decrease the volume.
More ambitious way is singing, dancing or just listening music. Also you can express yourself by your outfit. And probably many other ways.

This kind of presenting art is very modern and interesting. I also think that many people from the world of smartphones, computers and internet, would probably be interested only in that kind of exhibitions. I agree with @Sylwia that people watching the exhibition feels like being a part of it.

    2. Have you ever seen any other exhibition? Did you like it?

I had a pleasure to see many exibitions, but they were made more in traditional way. I think that “Van Gogh Alive„ is more interesting than those which I have seen before.

    3. A painting is a form of expressing yourself, do you have other ways to express your emotions?

I definitely agree with @Klaudia that there are many ways to express yourself.
I am trying to express myself during IT conferences where I have a pleasure to present my knowledge.

I think its very interesting way of presenting art. I have never met with something like that. This exhibition interested me a while ago and I'm really looking forward to see it myself. Not only because of high level of artist paintings but mainly because of the way of the presentation

    2. Have you ever seen any other exhibition? Did you like it?
As i mentioned before I have never seen exhibition like this. But in the last month I visited very interesting exhibition in Tokyo. The most curious was the topic of the paintings and sculptures, japanese artists present human in the different way, like no other.

    3. A painting is a form of expressing yourself, do you have other ways to express your emotions?
Yes, of course. Music, dance, your outfit and other form of artistic expression.

  11. At first thank you Mikołaj for mentioned about this exhibition, I would like to see it!

    1. What do you think about this way of presenting art?

In my opinion alternative ways of presenting art are a great solution to encourage people (especially not connected with art world) to see an exhibiton.
That kind of presentation could be also atractive for children which are mostly bored in regular museums. Interesting way of exhibit creates a great memories.

    2. Have you ever seen any other exhibition? Did you like it?

I've seen quite lot of exhibitions in my live. Some of them had an interactive elements (for example Biennale), they are the most attractive for me.

    3. A painting is a form of expressing yourself, do you have other ways to express your emotions?

My way of express myself is writing I think :)
I also like dancing, going for a walk for a while..

  12. It's great idea to show art that is familiar to us from a totally different perspective.
If I find some time during the upcoming week I might actually consider going there. Sounds pretty neat.
I've seen one other exhibition before. It wasn’t as impressive at this one seems to be but it was interesting. The one I saw was on aerial photography of post-war Warsaw.
I don’t want to say it was cool or anything like that but it made a big impression on me.

As for other forms of expression.. I believe that pretty much every creative activity allows for a certain amount of expression. Most popular ways seem to involve creating music, blogging, writing or photography. Besides that, there is also the most standard way - facial expressions. ;)

  13. This way of presenting art is eye-catching and very innovative. It might as well catch attention of an elder person as a youngster's attention not only because it's new but also for a good combination of vision and sound.
I've seen numerous art exhibitions and amongst all of them I particularly like art installations made of anything possible such as those done by Erwin Wurm called "One-Minute Sculptures" or any other made especially for place in which those are exposed.
We are able and actually we should express ourselves on everyday basis without any obstacles but if you ask about artistic way of expressing myself I like painting which is very refreshing and soul nurturing :)

  14. I think that's quite an innovative and interesting way not only to present art in a hugely intrigueing manner, but also to attract a larger audience and thus to help more people appreciate and cherish art. I'm glad to see such projects since I remeber how I broke my reluctance towards going to exibitions and that was one of the best things that have ever happened to me. As for the way I like to express myself, I believe that making music can be one of the best means of conveying your thoughts and feeings to the outside world.
