Week 7 [05-11.06.2017] World of cosplay

Cosplay is one of the most known kind of entertainment, but not everyone likes it. That’s because it is unconventional kind of entertainment. You wear special outfits, and go through town to meet people who like it, just like you.
Once I made my own cosplay and went to a special event called convention. That one was called “Balticon”. When I was walking through the town a stranger came to me and said “Nice cosplay, I admire you, I’m not so brave to do it”. Some strangers stared at me in a special, negative way. That’s my story of cosplay and I want to show you why it is so popular.
To start with, you may think, that cosplay comes from Japan, but you are wrong. It has some elements which come from Japanese culture, but it was officiall invented in the 1980s, by fan cultures from the United States.
To start with, a Japanese artist Junichi Nakahara, who had been inspired by Yumeji Takehisa (an artist, who made his own brand of clothes) had an idea to design clothes in the manga style. Thanks to him young girls could buy outfits of the characters, which they liked the most.
The first cosplay was created in USA in the 1960s. Fans created costumes from the movie called “Star Trek” and showed in the science convention. In 1984 the Japanese style and American style merged and were named “cosplay”. Nobuyuki, the founder of Studio Hard – anime studio, attended to the science fiction event called WorldCOn he was impressed by costumes of the participants. When he returned to Japan, he tried to promote that style and named it “kospure”.

Nowadays there are enormous number of conventions. Some of them have also competitions of the best cosplay with big money prize. Most of cosplayers made costumes by themselves, sew step by step and learn how to make good and real-looked makeup. It cost many time but effects are worth that lost time. Some of them do it for fun others for money and fame. There are lists of best cosplayers.
Here you have 2 famous Europe cosplayers: Italian Leon Chiro and LittleJem from Great Britain
Here is Julia Cosplayer – girl from Asia

  1. I've never heard about coseplay. It seems to be funny. I'd like to try this someday. When I read your article I have another issue in my mind. Have you ever see The Big Bang Theory? It's a TV series, very funny for me. Most of characters TBBT behave in way that you described! Please follow this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVOV6eCyLCI. It's some kind of coseplay but in their way. Feel free to comment my video. I can't belive that coseplay exists so long. Have Poland has any coseplay convention?

    1. Hi :) I love Bing Bang Theory :) You have right they waear costumes, but I don't think that it is in 100% cosplay. In Poland there are a lot conventions, as I mentioned before Balticon, every April is Pyrkon in Poznan. Even in IEM you have cosplay. I recommand you to do cosplay. My own was hand-made. It was hard but it brought much satisfaction :)
Say hello to our friend Sheldon :)

  2. That's the first I've heard of it. It seems to be an interesting hobby. Our colleague over here mentioned TBBT and I admit that after reading the article I associated it with this TV series.

    1. Do you know game called League of Legends? In main site of game sometimes there are shown some cosplayers (like in my article Xayah and Rhakan) :). Cosplay has two sides: one which is connected with (sometimes) huge expenses, and great fun to be character you wished to be. It is like dream came true.

  3. I've heard about cosplay before. Recently Comicon was organized in Warsaw and you could see people in cosplay. It looks like fun, but it's not something for me. In addition, I don't have skills to make costume suitable for cosplay.

If you don't want to do costume by your own, you can buy costume :)
Yes I heard about Comicon, but I couldn't be on it.

  4. I have tried to disguise myself a little, but they were all costumes for halloween. I don't know if I can call it cosplay, but I've tried some Marvel heroes and Game of Thrones female characters.

    1. Witches, ghosts, etc. are only typicall costumes. You can do statue as you wish. If you try some characters from Marvel and Game of Thrones you can say that you did cosplay. :)

  5. I have heard about cosplay before and when I see some pictures from convents I always admire how much work did it take to create such complicated outfits. I think that this culture will be developing because more and more people are playing games and this cosplays are inspired by games or movies or comics. Cosplay is very fun topic but it is not which is close to me.

I don't want to convince you to like it, but only I want to show you how it is great to be different than others

  6. I've heard about cosplay, but I can't understand its phenomenon. Ok, it may be nice for kids, but for adults? I don't know... I don't like it.
But if it makes people happier, then I wouldn't blame them. It's nice that they have their own passion.

  7. I can say as an amateur in cosplaying that it is great feeling to be somebody who you will never be. Why do you feel that? Is it some kind of stereotype?

  8. I am a fun of cosplay, there are many girls, which we could find on Instagram. In my opinion it is nice, and creative way to get away from everyday life. I know that, nowadays we try to create the best image of ourselves, but we should remember that, deep in our hearts everyone is a child. Cosplay is connecting with the word of comics and games (number cannot lie, when data is given how much did they make on the latest Marvel movie - "Logan" In result Marvel earned $9.5 million in one night)

  9. I heard about cosplay and I was on gaming fair where game developers as a promotion, they hire models to dress up for the characters from the game. Maybe it's not Comicon but it's fantastic that for a short while we can to the game world.

  10. I really don't like cosplay. I know it has a lot of fans. Ok, i do not mind it, it looks good, but unfortunately I'm not interested in it.
On the other hand, I thought it was something new and it was not :D

  11. It is nice and interesting. I have not yet occasion nor I have no friends liked it. I have heard this is quite popular in Japan also other western countries.
I haven't heard anything about Poland and cosplay.
But if I have opportunity I will be really interested in.
Especially I love colors, mainly joyfull red, blue, yellow :)

    Do you have any experiences?

    Why you write about it?

  12. I think it's a bit childish to play dress ups.. But if someone gets fun of it - let them play. I was sure it was strongly connected to Japan, but US fit as well. They've got much bigger fan culture around movies, comic books, games, books, etc.

  13. I've seen some cosplay creations, but not like on pictures you've provided. I don't like it - manga and it's derivatives are out of my interest (ok, I've lied a little - I love GITS and Akira :-)). But I've seen many great cosplays from ie. Witcher or DC Comics productions and I was delighted.

  14. I always liked cosplay, yet I never got an idea to check where it derives from – to be fair I always thought it comes from Japan. That is a nice surprise.

I never got courage to go to any convention dressed up as some character, but I do like face painting a lot – I bought professional paint some time ago and got to try it out a few times already. It’s surprising how you can make yourself look like a completely another person with a few tricks.

I noticed how there are three types of people that stick out the most when it comes to cosplaying – those who cosplay for fun, those who do it professionaly and pay attention to the smallest details, picking characters that they resemble the most and those who think that it’s a complete waste of time or a play for kids who need to grow up. Personally I don’t see how it differs from characterization in movies or theathers. It takes a lot of talent, reaserch and work to actually prepare a decent cosplay.

  15. I have heard about cosplay but I’m not sure if it’s very popular in Poland. I think I wouldn’t wear that kind of outfit. It’s very interesting that you made your own costume. How did you do it?

  16. Cosplay become more and more popular even in Poland! As you mentioned, there are plenty of events where you can meet cosplayers in our beautiful country. I like the trend but I would never become a cosplayer myself, I think... I admire how much effort some of the people put in preparing their costumes. Some of them look amazing! Nevertheless, personally, I doubt I would feel the climate to dress up :)

  17. I'm not a cosplay fan, because it's not for me. For a kid it's definitely fun;) I've never heard of cosplay, but I would go but being on the side Thank you for the article

  18. Thanks for the article. I knew that the cosplay comes from USA but i also thought it's invented by them. Maybe I am not a big fan of cosplay but I think it is a great hobby. Ofcourse if You like comics world ;)

  19. I’m a part of PC games world, so it was impossible to live throughout 2017 not knowing about them :) I like the idea very much. I watched some YouTube videos and was surprised how much effort it cost to create a good costume. I admire people doing this, because indeed you need to be brave to do this. Still – I’m not sure if I would decide to do it on my own. I think I don’t impersonate with any fictional character so much to be willing to become him :) And somehow I think it’s a prerequisite to be a cosplayer.

What I don’t like about cosplayers culture is attention-seeking girls with over-exposed breasts or other parts of their bodies. At some point I’m simply not sure if it’s still an old-fashioned cosplay or maybe an attempt of attracting the attention. Especially if the role doesn’t require negligee…
