What if there was no internet
Most of us can't imagine a day without the internet. It is present in our everyday lives. We use it on multiple occasions, for example to communicate, to check the news, to have fun. Without it people would have had to spend much more time to get some things done (e.g paying bills, buying something, learning). Computer games would be much more boring with no connection with other people, many of it are available only through the internet. Also access to the information would be much more limited. People would be much more easier to manipulate with only television and press as a source of information.

On the other hand internet have its dark sides too. A lot of people are addicted to the internet, spending whole days in front of computer, tablet or phone, surfing the web with no purpose. I think without it the internet people would be going outside more often, connecting with real humans, not the one on the web. People also would be more active, therefore more healthy and happy.
Considering all the pros and cons of the lack of the internet it is hard to say whether the life would have been better or worse. For sure it would have been a lot different than it is today. We will never know.
1. How do you think, what life would be like without internet?
2. How often do You use internet?

Because I work from home most of the week I use the Internet everyday to connect to my company's resources. Working in IT would be near impossible if we were to live in world without the Internet.
ReplyDeleteIn the world without Internet Your life would be much different then. Doing this job would be almost impossible from home. You would have lost much more time for going to and returning from work, assuming if this job would have existed at first.
DeleteI love what Internet gave us and I cannot imagine (at least with current lifestyle) living without it right now.
ReplyDeleteIt's really not about games or even media at all.
Internet gave us possibility to share our passion, what we know and what we care about but also became an amazing source of knowledge about almost anything. Ideas can now start in any place of the world with access to the Internet and spread almost instantly across the globe.
Of course, there are also several problems with it and I would say addiction is the least of them.
I think much bigger problem is how we are overloaded with information nowadays - we can barely manage to filter something worth knowing, not to mention telling what is true and what's not.
Other thing I find really hard with instant access to the Internet is how to value ourselves. If anyone can share anything in the web, there are always thousands of people that can draw better than you, speak languages more fluently than you, are much prettier or smarter, have better car or larger house.
You can easily lose yourself in this madness. :)
Despite all of this, I use Internet every day, create web applications for living and learn new things and share my passions with people around the world.
You just need to know how to avoid all this noise and flood of information.
As for 'going outside more often, connecting with real humans' I can just comment on this with photos like the one with full train of people reading newspapers, not talking to each other:

I think we tend to find problems in objects, instead of ourselves.
That's true what You wrote about ideas. I agree with that, but toxic ideas can spread with the same speed as the good ones. Hatred is also becoming more and more problem.
DeleteAbout the overload of information it is really important to know how to filter those informations. Also abstinence from information for example for a week is also a good way to not lost yourself in them. I know people surfing the web with no purpose at all and after one hour they are like "what the hell am I doing?" :)
The problem with how to value ourselves is mostly in our minds so we need to know how to deal with it and try not to take everything personally.
Yes I'm familiar with this picture, but I still think that even going outside for shopping or something is better than to shopping online is much better way to connect with other people :)
I use Internet everday on laptop, phone, tv etc. The company I work for wouldn't exist if the Internet have not been invented.
ReplyDeleteWorld wothout Internet probably would be more social. We would be forced to talk more, ask more, answer more. Overall people are smart and resourceful. I think without Internet some other way of communicating would be invented.
Same here, I use it everyday on every device that use the Internet. I think a lot of companies wouldn't exist without the Web. On the other hand there would be a lot different companies that doesn't use the Internet to feel the gap in working places and the whole economy.
DeleteI agree with Your statement that the world would be more social, cause then You would have to 'google' through other people, books or any different sources, not the google :)
If there was no internet, our life would look completely different. It’s quite normal that now we depends on the internet, because it’s a source of a great opportunities and we based our life and everything around us on the Internet. It’s hard to imagine how it will be. Even moderate this blog will be not impossible without the Internet. Maybe we will talking more on rule face to face? I use internet everyday. It’s because of my work, study, hobbies, friends and many many other things. As I said, it’s our daily routine and we accustomed to this. It’s also dangerous because we are highly depends on the Internet. So, what can we do if enemies attack servers, which we use everyday? For example our bank’s servers. Do we lose every penny?
ReplyDeleteI even think there wouldn't have been this blog if there was no Internet so there wouldn't be a need to moderate it :)
DeleteYes our dependance is really big on the Internet. There is so much major systems in our life that are working only thanks to Internet, for example banking as You mentioned, electricity, even traffic lights. They for sure have good security systems but its scary to imagine that there is even a slight risk of them being hacked and destroyed remotely.
Now life does not exist without internet.
ReplyDeleteDaily activities needs Internet. For example: work, study, watching netflix or frends conntacts.
I use all day at work in internet but in my free time i try don't use enything what emits blue light because it isn't healthy. Now we come back to board games, it's very nice oportiunity to computer games, and spend time with real people.
I agree with Agata. The current life of many people is strongly connected to the internet. There are many professions whiw would be not exist without internet. In example programmer or security specialist.
DeletePrivatly I like spend my free times without internet. I alos loke board games with my girlfriend.
Maybe not all of this activities needs Internet but there are much simpler thank to it. For example finding an information during studies are a lot of times faster than You would need to find it in ant other way. We just got used to the Internet that is really hard to imagine what would have been without it. I think most of people would have felt lost with no Internet.
DeleteBoard games are perfectly good example that we don't need Internet to have fun. I think it is really good to spend some free time with friends in real life, not only through Internet.
No internet I'm humans live?
ReplyDeleteA lot of free time ! More contact with other people but on the other side some activities start to be very difficult. For example sending some News from one country to another or even our internet english course.
I try to not use internet on my vacation time and I'm really happy because it works.
My last internet rehab takes 2week's. I think it's quite ok :)
Much more free time :) a lot of people are addicted to it without even knowing.
DeleteIt's really good to have some internet rehabs like You have. It have only positive influence on people. Many humans are becoming more conscious about their state of mind during that rehab and they learn that surfing the web for too long might be a problem and can cause some problems.
I once read that, in the future, being offline will be a luxurious value that not many will be able to afford. I think the process has already started and even now it’s hard to imagine a modern world without Internet. It makes things so much easier that life from before Internet-era seems almost unreal. And like every ‚simplifier’, it can be addictive. But I would rather focus on the positive sides, as the whole world seems achievable thanks to this global connection. I use Internet everyday as I work from home as graphic designer and find it unbelievably useful. The key is not to get distracted by the mass of useless information.
ReplyDeleteInteresting point, haven't heard that being offline will be luxurious. Although if we more think about it that is really true. The process has already started as You mentioned and not many people can afford to stay offline, especially when they run business or their job is related to Internet. I think that there is more pros than cons and it is good to focus on the positives.
DeleteSometime's it is just really hard to not get distracted by useless informations, but with proper training everything can be achieved :)
I know what life was without Internet because I remember those times pretty well.
ReplyDeleteImagine what would it be without mobile phones! Remember that too. :(
I use Internet everyday. The moment I wake up, I reach for my phone.
Maybe it's a little too much so I am trying to fight it.
I think Internet is great but most people just don't know how to use it.
Just because there is so much trash they don't know where or even what to look for.
The idea was great but something went pretty wrong.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqctG3NnDa0
It is also hard to imagine a world without mobile phones, I think there is even more users of mobile phones than the Internet. Contacting someone would have been few times harder.
DeleteThank You for that short documentary. It is true that Internet addiction is really big problem. Especially for young minds. Parents often doesn't pay enough attention to kids in this case or even are telling children to go play or surf the web cause then they have free time. It can easily ruin childhood for them. We need to be aware of that and know how to help someone addicted.
I'm think that I'm getting old :)
ReplyDeleteI remember times when computers were something unusual at homes. Indeed people wasn't so addicted to the Internet and social media. Through times everything had changed. People can't handle without Internet and computers. I think that if Net desappear anarchy will control all world. Aftet short while everything start collapse. Domestic animals would die easilly. Then people will have to start hunting. etc :)
Btw.Social media took control of big amount of people long time ago :)
DeleteAlso I can't agree with ur statement about computer games. I know many people who plays not only MMO games, but they like classic ones like Heroes Might and Magic III
Well I still remember when I was young and there was no internet available to the public. I think internet changed how we approach problems, how we communicate, how we entertain our self and pretty much how we live. I think without Internet it would be just harder to live but we would probably find new challenges to deal with. We are connected 24h per day so the question how often do you use Internet seems pretty archaic.
ReplyDeleteI think it is enough to check the past and see how the world looked without internet;) It certainly makes it easy to do many everyday things. As you mentioned, it saves a lot of time on things like shopping, payments etc. It also improves the contact with others, it is faster and easier to make friends. I'm aware that some people may only live in virtual worlds, but in my opinion it's just a matter of individual approach as you use this technology. You can sit at home in front of your computer, or use this saved time to spent it with friends or family.
ReplyDeleteI use the internet every day, because it is my 'job', without it unfortunately I would have to change the industry;)
How often I’m using internet? I’m even a part of English courses via internet. :P It’s very helpful tool. For example, thanks to mentioned before courses I can get up at 1pm in Saturday's. I also making Android Studio project without elementary programming skills with tremendous help of online communities. If the Internet would not exist this simple project would take me years… Even when I’m watching infantile content on 9gag it’s just when I want, not when I have to. So, my conclusion is that dark sides of Internet didn’t make my life worse than pre-web era. Of course, there are lot of people who are addicted to browsing social media etc. but that’s not my piece of cake.
ReplyDeleteOur times without the Internet? Communication between two people could not be harmed. We could still have cellphones. But our lifes are definately easier with The Web. We can communicate with each other on the brand new level. Nowadays we literally share our life with our Internet friends on Facebook, Twitter etc. We have a money on our web account. We have an opportunity to do a shopping from home. Our lifes with the Internet is very easy. But we all know that Internet is a dangerous weapon and I'm not only talking about hackers attacks and money stealing. A problem is also psychological. Our ability to talk to people in real life is more difficult. We spend our free time talking to people in front of a glass. Day by day people are more introvert.
ReplyDeleteI use Internet pretty much. Even now, when I'm writing these words. In my opinion the Internet is a bless. I'm not imagine our world without this great invention of human mind. But we have to know a boundary between real and virtual life.
