COFFEE BEANS: ARABICA
OR ROBUSTA?
Today’s world is dominated by two coffee species
– Robusta and Arabica. At the first sight they look the same. The main
differences between those two are: taste, flavour profiles, chemical features, growing conditions, price etc. The taste of
Arabica is described as sweeter, softer with fruits and berries tones while
Robusta has more stronger and nutty flavour. Robusta beans are more circular
and contain almost twice as much caffeine as Arabicas. More caffeine have an
impact on the bitter taste of Robusta which can make it as an unpleasant drink.
Robustas are easier to grow and as a result they are cheaper to produce than
Arabica. In addition Robustas are more resistant to insects and weather
conditions. They can also grow at lower altitutes than Arabicas - they are
grown from 200 meters a.s.l. whereas Arabicas crops need to be located between
1000 to 2000 m a.s.l. Generally, blends of these two types of coffee are mostly
sold because of 100% Arabica price and bad Robusta taste.

TYPES OF COFFEE
NOWADAYS
Coffee is the 2nd world’s famous
beverage. It is made from roasted coffee
beans. It can be a simple drink like an espresso (attention! This is espresso -
unfortunately it’s often mispronounced as "expresso"). Still, when we go to a coffee house we can get
confused by the variety of available coffee types. The most popular types of
coffee:
- Espresso - it’s the most popular and the most
important type, because every coffee starts with espresso. There is no other
coffee without it. If you want to drink tasty coffee you need to learn how to
make a good espresso (you can find a short instruction at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yd_XKGB8pTw).
- Americano
– a cup with a shot of espresso and filled with hot water.
- Cappuccino
– single espresso with part of steamed milk and equal part of warmed milk.
Perfect proportion of espresso to warm milk to froth is 1:1:1.
- Caffé
Latte – it’s just white coffee. Most often it’s just double espresso with warm
milk.
The picture below shows different types of
coffee. Each of them has a unique flavor. I believe that you will find
something just right for you.

Do you like coffee? How often do you drink
coffee? What is your favorite kind of this beverage?
I like coffee very much, but for health reasons I had to replace it with green tea, which also has stimulating properties and help with concentration. Sometimes I drink coffee and it's more like meeting with friends over coffee, or when I'm very tired and when I need to be focus on my work. My favourite type of coffee is latte macchiato, and on hot days carmel frappe
ReplyDeleteMałgorzata, what kind of green tea do you replace coffee? Do you drink for example matcha or choose classic ones like sencha?
DeleteJustyna, I prefer sencha much more. My favourite green teas are Japanese one, especially the Japanese types - gyokuro. Gyokuro has a high caffeine content, but the content of one of the amino acid allows it to absorb small amounts of caffeine.
DeleteSometimes I even reach for yerba mate :)
To be honest, I'm not a coffee person. Although I do drink coffee (mainly latte macchiato, cappuccino and Baileys Irish coffee), it is not my favourite beverage. Actually I prefer chilled beverages such as fruit juices over hot ones. When it comes to popularity of coffee(my husband drinks more coffees each day than I do in a week), I see the power of caffeine and the nice, smooth scent of a freshy ground coffe beans, I just do not enjoy the flavour of this drink.
ReplyDeleteI read this article with care and astonishment - how amazing it is, how many different drinks have a collective name - "coffee". After all, coffee with milk (animal, vegetable, foamed) is something completely different from coffee with more water and sugar. You can add cinnamon, cocoa, chili - and it will still be coffee, with a completely different taste, but coffee!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of coffee, but sometimes I will drink. Sometimes I'd like to drink a coffee, but I know that I am not an expert and, for example, I will not like stronger or brewed from more roasted beans (because they have a strong taste).
I think I like latte the most - there is no characteristic, strong coffee taste, it can be softened with sugar.
Have you ever done any interesting coffee mixture? With some more crazy spices than cinnamon or cocoa?
If you prefer drinking white coffee you should try a Dalgona Coffee! It is made from instant coffee, but it's delicious. Dalgona is easy to make and looks amazing :)
DeleteA few days ago I saw a lot of recipes for this drink from the internet - probably on the vegan recipes page. But it seems to me that this coffee is too white :)
DeleteDo you like coffee?
ReplyDeleteCoffee is life. Not in a sense of boosting energy but rather like a cigarette for a smoker. I love to celebrate coffee-time, it's relaxation part of a day!
How often do you drink coffee?
I'm trying to avoid drinking more than 2 coffees a day, because exceeding that amount makes me depreciate value of that black-gold. Still, as I mentioned before it's all about pleasure not any other caffeine side effects.
What is your favorite kind of this beverage?
Flat white with tiny amount of lactose-free milk is my all-time favorite.
I love coffee and I'm totally addicted to this drink! Drinking this heavenly liquid once a day, at morning is my basic ritual. I like many types of coffee, I usually drink americano made from classic Italian illy, but I also adore Vietnamese Robusta coffee with ice cubes and condensed milk.
ReplyDeleteAgnieszka if you like Italian coffee, I recommend Passalacqua brand. It's a small roastery from Naples :)
DeleteTo be honest, I'm a huge fan of coffee. I usually drink coffee one to two times a day. I definitely prefer black coffee without any additions. When I'm in a cafe, nine times out of ten, I choose espresso, unless I'm with someone and want to sip something longer, then I pick americano. Sometimes I choose coffee with milk, but then I treat it more like a dessert. It is much harder to recognize good coffee if it is accompanied by milk, whipped cream, sweet syrup, and chocolate chips.
ReplyDeleteKarol you're totally right that the best way to check the quality of coffee is ordering an espresso shot :) Do you have a favourtie blend?
DeleteI tried to drink coffee only once. I don't like its taste or even smell. I'm rather tea person. Of course, because of that I can't say what is my favourite beverage, because I don't have one. But I must say that i found this article very interesting and it was exciting to realize how many different kind of coffee we have nowadays.
ReplyDeleteTomasz, I understand that not everyone likes coffee, but thanks for your opinion! I'm glad you liked the article :)

ReplyDeleteI'm not saying that I'm a coffee lover but I have my morning coffee ritual which gets me on track. Every morning I start work with coffee and after about 2 hours I drink the next one. Never more, sometimes less. Once when we've had Green Cafe Nero in our office I loved to drink peanut caffe but since then I prefer casual capuccino.
I like coffee and I think that I can say that I’m addicted to this beverage. I can’t imagine a morning without coffee but on the other hand, one is often enough and I don’t need more. As I’ve mentioned in the previous sentence, I drink coffee almost every day. I like it and it’s some kind of pleasure for me but what’s most important, it kicks me and helps mi to wake up faster. Also, I do feel that sometimes it can improve my creativity but it doesn’t happen every time. I only drink coffee without milk so depending on my demand my favorite kinds are espresso, lungo, ristretto, and americano.

ReplyDeleteI love coffee and I can't live a day without it. I drink coffee few times a day now even tho when I started working I hated it so much. Coffee is also some kind of a routine in my work where we just have a thing twice a day where we go, make a coffee and talk for half an hour so there is a second good thing about coffee, it helps you stay awake and helps in social interactions. I love every kind of this beverage but only if it contains milk other way I can't swallow it down my throat. :D I've also heard about this green coffee thing and tried it once to be honest it tasted like a soil so I decided to stay dedicated to my normal black coffee with milk.
ReplyDeleteFor me a morning coffee is also mandatory at work ! I can't imagine a day in office without it ;) It's a great opportunity to have small talks with other co-workers.
DeleteIt was very helpful coffee guide which I needed, always wanted to learn this stuff about coffee, but never managed to do it, so thank you. I drink coffee on daily basis, but I can make it without it. My favourite is flat white on soy milk. All my friends who are coffee geeks love acidic and fruity drip coffee from Africa, but for me, it's too strange, I guess I'm more used to the Italian way of drinking coffee.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I'm a huge fan of Italian style of drinking coffee too! I used to travelling to Italy a lot and I made a lot of coffee bummers there - starting with ordering a latte (if you order latte in Italy you will get a glass of milk ;) ) to drinking cappuccino after dinner (in Italy time for cappuccino is in the morning) :)
DeleteI didn't like coffee when I was younger but after starting working I started drinking it and it magically turned out to be quite tasty. I usually drink once or twice per day, depends on when I wake up.
ReplyDeleteI like "normal" black coffee, which I believe is known as Americano but it leaves unpleasant aftertaste in mouth so I tend to drink it with milk. I'd say it's caffe latte but I usually don't use more than two or three tablespoons of milk so I'm not sure if you can call it like that.
In that case I'd say that macchiato is your favourite coffee - it's a shot or two of espresso with small amount of milk :)
Deletefun fact: Italian word 'macchiato' means just 'marked'
First of all thank you for this article, it was very interesting, before that I haven’t know about coffee anything, I just haven’t thought about it.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is, I don’t like coffee that much, I have never make coffee for me at home, but I enjoy to sit in the cafe and grab a cup of coffee with friends.
Usually I drink cappuccino or latte, for me it’s the best options, because I like sweet and soft coffee, and I have never drink espresso or americano, I like to savour the sweet taste of milk and some bitter coffee.
I really like coffee and I usually drink one or two a day. However, I drink it mainly because of its taste, because I don't feel like it boosts me. People usually have their favorite type of coffee or tea, but I don't understand it at all. I like many types of coffee at different moments I just drink it different. For me this is definitely better than drinking only one type the most of time.

ReplyDeleteI totally LOVE coffee! I can't live without this drink, I can't even start a day without a big cup filled with this black substance - that's my favorite. Black as night without sugar, 100% arabica. Any other bledns recommedned? I tried robusta once but in my opinion it's not as good as arabica. What's yours favorite blends guys?
ReplyDeleteI find the topic pretty intriguing, as I consider myself a big coffe fan. Definetely my favourite coffe type is latte, for me it has the perfect composition of sweetness and a lasting taste. I am not a big espresso fan, as it makes your pressure rise very quickly, as well that it has bitter taste and I have the same attitude toward americano, whereas Cappuccino always appeared as big more tasty and approachable.
ReplyDeleteAlso in the summer time I definitely enjoy having all these ice coffes, as they make a good refreshment and energizer.
Despite all the advantages, I do realize, that caffeine is not always healthy, as it can increase heart rate and blood pressure, as well as it can cause sleep deprivation. For the reasons I do try to substitute coffe with tea or yerba mate, as often as I can.
Nice coffee dashboard! I knew that there are plenty of coffee serving types, but I didn’t know how call them. Back to the question, I drink it quite often, my favorite is kind of flat white, because I like warm milk, but without foam. Last thing, once I was in Pożegnianie z Afryką café. I’ve ordered some special coffee and… it was awful. So I prefer simple coffee with warm milk and please serve it to my desk!
ReplyDeleteI like coffee and I strongly believe that a cup of coffee is the best way to start the day. Thanks to caffeine, people can be more productive and focus on their tasks. Moreover, if you know how to make coffee, it can be really tasty. Making coffee is one of the first things I do after coming to the office. I usually drink two cups of coffee a day, but there are also days when I don't drink coffee at all. I prefer black coffee, without sugar and milk. Thanks to this I can enjoy the taste of the coffee itself.

DeleteI like coffee very much, and I cannot start a day without it. I drink alot of coffees ( minimum five a day). My favorite is black with suggar. I dont understand how you can add milk to it. In my opinion it ruins taste:)
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteI like coffee and I usually drink espresso or "ordinary black" coffee. I am also a big fan of mocha and in the summer I like to drink cold brew with milk. I usually drink coffee 3-4 times a week, although now it happens even less often, because for some time I have been a fan of yerba mate and matcha latte, which also give me a lot of energy and they taste great! ⭐️
Coffee .. I can live without it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I drink it must be delicious. The taste of coffee for me are different depending on the place and situations to drink coffee. Season of the year is very important to me.
Coffee tastes individual to me in summer or winter. I drink coffee after returning from skis and drink coffee with my friends at meetings.
I have my favourite place to drink coffee in Warsaw and I am probably surprised some coffee lovers I am not demanding lunatic. I like the smallest cappuccino at Mc Caffee on Łopuszańska street also Starbucks at Rausz Arsenal medium latte with a double mild flavour espresso..
I should go for coffee tomorrow.. Oh wait I souldn't because quarantine :(
