Week 6 [21.12-27.12.2015]: A trip to Japan on a shoestring budget

A couple of  weeks ago I returned from Japan. It was a great November  trip. You can’t even imagine how much you can see  without spending too much money. We started our trip in Rome and we had 10 flights during our journey. Quite a lot, right? We chose this way of traveling because it’s faster and cheaper than train and renting cars. From Rome we went to Moscow, but we didn’t see lot there, only the airport :P It was just a stopover., for refueling the plane. After next ten hours we got to the Tokyo’s  airport- Tokyo Narita, but it wasn’t our last stop. We wanted to get to the tropical Island- Tokashiki. We had to catch a plane there. We used a budget airline - Jetstar. The flight cost only a few dollars. It was a really good decision. You can see Tokashiki Island in the  pictures below.

The whole time on the island we spent relaxing. We were snorkeling a lot and sunbathing of course. But it was only three day there so we didn’t  have much time as we wanted to see all beautiful places. Next we caught a plane to Kyoto.

This city amazed me with its architecture and beautiful Japanese gardens. We visited lots of temples and monuments. In the photo you can see the example of these.

I had a big problem with my luggage – from the beginning of our trip something was wrong with my suitcase, after a couple days it turned out that the wheels were broken and finally they stopped working. I needed to get a new one. It was not as simple as I thought. At that moment Japan was full of everything but not any new luggage. We were looking everywhere but we couldn’t find any shop with new suitcases. It took us a few hours to find one. Despite all the beautiful places, Kyoto will always remind me my broken suitcase. If anyone of you wants to visit Kyoto, I would recommend staying at least five or six days there.
After Kyoto we came back to the Narita Airport, it was our second time there. We slept in one of capsule hotels. It was quite a strange experience but nice. It’s a really clean place with a few rules:
   1)      You must be totally quiet
   2)      You can’t eat anything there
   3)      Girls and boys sleep separately

After that weird night we finally got to the center of Tokyo. We stayed there for a week. We tried to see as much as it was possible. We didn’t have any guide, so it was not so simple. Lots of our time was wasted because of travelling by the Japanese subway. The structure of the subway is very complicated and at the beginning we had a lot of problems. But our apartment was really nice. We are lucky guys, I think. We did not get up early because we went to bed very late. Nightlife in Tokyo was very interesting. All these clubs, pubs and karaoke parties…You should see it. It was really hard to go to bed there.

You're probably thinking that I was eating a lot of sushi in Japan? But you are wrong. This kind of dishes is hard to find in other cities than Tokyo. We ate genuine Japanese sushi a few times when we got to Tokyo. In Japan food is very specific. It’s tasty for everybody, but you will not know if you don’t try by yourself.
Look for cheap tickets and go to Japan!

  1. Very nice trip diary :) A little chaotic, but still it was pleasure to read that. I've never been to Japan, so it's hard for me to comment your presentation. So I'll go straight to anwers:

    1. Have you ever been to any interesting place/city?
Of course - you kind find those even in your own city. But if you're asking about foreign countries - I have been to Turkey, Greece, other many cities in Europe and USA.
    2. What was your craziest or longest trip?
Maybe not craziest, but I really enjoyed my self-organized trip to London, Amsterdam, Madrid and Paris. My attitude towards trips can be found in comment section here: http://konwersatorium3.blogspot.com/2013/10/annual-leave.html or here http://konwersatorium3.blogspot.com/2014/04/week-3-my-trip-to-budapest.html, so I don't want to copy and paste my statements.
    3. What is your attitude to Asian cuisine?
It's not my piece of cake to be honest. I'm not a big fan of sushi.

You wrote about crazy nightlife in Japan... Something like that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvVCvM4H5vA?

    1. I watched yours youtube links with big octopus, but unfortunately I haven't seen that big octopus in my life even in Japan hihi:P
I can't decide which country I should visit in next summer, maybe Greece or Portugal. I have to analize prices of the tickets and flats. We will see:)

  2. Interesting topic, and it's nice that you were able to travel cheaply to such a distant and exotic place.

I once travelled to Barcelona by myself and stayed there a few days just simply walking and looking around. It was a great experience and it was nice to do it all by myself, not minding other people's requests, just doing what I wanted :) Wasn't anything crazy though, sometimes felt a bit dangerous, but nothing extreme - there are a few places in that city not recommended to visit at night.

  3. 1. Have you ever been to any interesting place/city?

Yes, I' ve been in many places abroad our country. I visited Egypt, Turkey, Portugal, Nitherland, France, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria and many others. Every country entranced me with a different thing.

    2. What was your craziest or longest trip?

My longest trip was to France. I've been there for one month visiting many cities. My longest trip was to Portugal. It was a trip on my own with a friend of mine. I visited Faro - the biggest city on the south of Portugal. I was to Lagos, which is a very beautiful place with amazing cliffs and caves. I also visited the Armona Island. I was to the capital city - Lisbon. We had variuos crazy situations, my only guide was my offline version of navigation on my phone and the knowledge I gained earlier while browsing the Internet. We always reached our destination. I like to visit places on my own without a time limit. I can go anywhere I want. This is impossible when you are on a guided tour. I recommend this kind of sightseeing.

    3. What is your attitude to Asian cuisine?

I am a big fan of Asian cuisine. I love sushi and I've made it very often. I also like dishes which contain algas, udon noodles, lemon grass or have word Sichuan in the name.

  4. Thanks Kate for your article, I found it very interesting. After reading it I would go to Japan too!

    1. Have you ever been to any interesting place/city?
I've been in a few European countries; Germany, Switzerland,France, Czech Republic, Austria.
I also was in Turkey for a one term as Ersmus student.

    2. What was your craziest or longest trip?
I think my craziest and most interesting trip were adventures in Turkey. I had to go to Berlin first by myself and I met a lot of people during my whole journey.

    3. What is your attitude to Asian cuisine?

I'm a big fan of sushi and I prepared it by myslef a few times :) My friend works in Japanese restaurant and the first sushi that I've tried was made by him :) And I really enjoyed this taste :)

  5. That sounds like you had one hell of a trip! :) Japan does sound interesting and having taken a glance at your latest experiences I'm more and more convinced to follow into your footsteps and start searching for some cheap tickets.
    Answering to your questions:
    1) Yes, for instance I have been to Split, Croatia. At first it may seem as quite a regular (for some even tedious) destination to go to, but there was one event going on in there at the time that changed the city beyod recognition. It was the "Ultra" festival 2015. One of the world's biggest music events. It attracted to Croatia people from all over the globe changing Split into some sort of a multi-cultural state with thousends of people spending their time on huge areas of the city designed to be one of the world's biggest audiece areas ever.
    2) I guess the craziest would be my trip to Spain. Despite sunbathing in December, which felt a little bit bizzare everything I was doing there turned out different than I planned! I guess it's enough to say that insted of renting a car and seing cathedrals and castles as planned I ended up hitch-hiking through nearly the whole Basque country trying to get to know the way locals live and sometimes testing their hospitality to the very limit :)
    3) I find it difficult to describe my attitude towards Asian cousine in gerenal, since it varies so much depending on an Asian coutry, but since I'm a person who likes to explore other cultures, also through getting to know their food I'm usually very enthusiastic to try out new, even seemingly odd tastes. As long as you don't want me to eat worms or something of the sort! :)

  6. very interesting presentation. Japan is a very interesting country, I hope that someday visit this country. We're located close to Japan - in Thailand. This is my first trip so far. previously flown on the European countries. together with my boyfriend flew to Thailand on their own. the first week we visited Bangkok, followed by the second week of rest on the island of Phuket. amazing country! We spend a very nice time here. I love Asian cuisine, but unfortunately after a week a little bored so we happily ate chips with burger today;)

    2. I LOVE Thailand Very very much! People are so kind and helpful for tourists, prices are quite low。 Thai couise is amazing but most of
dishes are deep fried. Temperature - hot like hell :) Amazing place!!

  7. 1. Have you ever been to any interesting place/city?
I visited many interesting places, for example Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, but the city that captivated me the most is Pamukkale in Turkey. That what is worth seeing there is “cotton fortress”. This is undoubtedly a miracle of nature. Historically, this area was inhabited by many civilizations. Line of Earth crust cracks, limestone terraces and hot springs thumping out of the ground, having about 35 degrees Celsius were known on this area of Turkey more than two thousand years ago. They form a natural swimming pool. The crystal clear and clean water filling the white limestone reservoirs creates amazing views. There are legends that bathing in the water collected in the terraces, works wonders. Immersed in the water body becomes younger. But it is just a legend. For sure water, rich in minerals and silt accumulated at the bottom, perfect cure skin diseases. Therefore, in the distant past, in this place people created a spa. Hierapolis, because that was called, until today has a interesting buildings and ruins that are worth seeing. Among them are large baths, the temple of Apollo, the sacred pond also called Cleopatra's Basin and the huge Roman Theatre for about 10 thousand spectators. This is really a wonderful place.
    Here you can see it:(https://www.youtube.comwatch?v=sFMRLZn0I58).

    2. What was your craziest or longest trip?
My longest trip was a journey through Italy. I was there for 3 months and during that time I visited all the places which are famous for Italy. It was not a trip organized by a travel agency, but by my mom, my sister and me, so we decided what place we want to see and how long we will spend in each of them. It was an amazing trip.

    3. What is your attitude to Asian cuisine?
It is not my favorite cuisine and there are many foods I do not like (for example sushi), but there are also foods which I love and often prepare – for example fried Chinese noodles. But my favorite cuisine is italian cuisine.

  8. In last year I hear a lot about asia and I think for most of my live I was thinking that asia is like black point on map, that there is nothing to see there but I was wrong. Asia is amazing, have multiple interesting places to visit. Whole culture is different and sometimes this open my eyes. Most of dishes that I eat wasnt good but there are few great.
Even for IT this is amazing how many good programers are there, how many great products are from this side of planet. I like it a lot. I will like to visit and see how they build sotfware, becouse there are plenty of companies that work differently than in usa or europe.

  9. Wow! Really nice article! I so envy you such a great trip :D

I’ve heard that Japan is a beautiful place to visit but the trip you described must be very exhausting. Even with working suitcase ;) But all the views are just amazing and probably worth the effort.

The picture with a capsule hotel was my favourite. To be honest I thought that these „rooms” are much smaller or even claustrophobic. But they seem quite comfortable for a night or two. I wonder if such things become popular in Europe or they are just reserved for Japan.

  10. With your article once again I hear that Japan is a country worth visiting, and certainly will be on my list of places to visit in the future.

    Below answers to your questions:

    1. Of course, I visited some interesting places, at one time I took part in races organized by various European capitals such as Paris, Budapest, Prague, Bratislava. It does not go without exploring these countries, so I combined two of my hobbies, sport and travel.

    2. My craziest trip was last year when with a bunch of friends we went to the festival called Tomorrowland, which takes place in a small town in Belgium called Boom. Trip lasted four days but was so intense that after returning I felt like I was away 2 weeks. Lots of fun and good music, awesome environment specially prepared for these few days, and people from all over the world. Great experience.

    3. I think I can tell that I like it, maybe not all dishes (eg with worms:)), but generally oriental cuisine tastes good to me.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1. Have you ever been to any interesting place/city?
Your photos from Tokashiki Island just brought back to me a memories from a bit hotter days than these during last week. Yes, memories from priceless summer! I really love Wladyslawowo - Chlapowo and amazing view from cliff... Yes, it is definitely time to start countdown days to July... :)

    2. What was your craziest or longest trip?
My longest trip? When I was a kid I spent few weeks somewhere on north of Sweden. It was a time when we still had a lot of snow in Poland during winter (not like now - only few white days...), but even so, they had it much, much more.

    3. What is your attitude to Asian cuisine?
Some of the dishes I like more, some less. But certainly I more like rice than our potatoes and even pasta. I prefer Chinese cuisine more than the Japanese.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Have you ever been to any interesting place/city?

Yes, I think everyone did :) It depends what is interesting, and what do you like. Some people like architecture, other people good food, other fantastic views and so on...
We don’t have to travel a lot to see beautiful places, we have them in Poland :)
But what was surprising for me, which makes it interesting - when I was last time in Wales to visit my girlfriend's sister (beautiful little town, named Crickhowell) we went for a trip to the mountains. At the top of the hill there were wild horses. First time I saw horses living in freedom :)

What was your craziest or longest trip?

Usually I don't travel for a long time, but this year I plan to go to Lofoty (Norway) through Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Sweden, by a car.

What is your attitude to Asian cuisine?

I didn't have much experience in Asian cuisine. Once I was in restaurant nearby our school (Inamba), and ate some other thing than sushi - it was delicious :) Of course I like sushi very much.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Have you ever been to any interesting place/city?

Of course, as everyone was in many interesting places. But I think that the most interesting place is the Biebrza National Park with marshes. On their site we can see the most pristine, unaltered by human hand areas where we can observe rare species of animals such as beavers, cranes and plants.

What was your craziest or longest trip?

The longest and the most crazy trip i was when i work in event team. I work and travel the whole the Poland, but the craziest and dangerous moment was when we walked to the ruins of the granary Modlin Fortress. When we came back we found that the place where we went was a military areas and we were caught by the military police and escorted to the commander. Of course, I ended up on the briefing, but some fear it was;)

What is your attitude to Asian cuisine?

I very like Asian cusine. But I can not persuade myself to sushi. I like very much chicken and the most like acute soup with chicken.
