Week 5 [7.12-13.12.2015] Maybe a short getaway?

Almost everyone likes to travel. But why? What is the reason?
Formerly: to explore new lands, because of curiosity or just for pleasure.
Nowadays: humanity has found new goals – of course to collect new, magnificent photos for Facebook and Instagram J
So I think that is a great occasion to talk about journeys.
Naturally, we live in  times when everyone is in a hurry to get somewhere. People do not have time to stop for a moment, and thus sometimes it is hard to go for an longer vacation.
But we do not need a long time. Just slow down for a moment.
Just one single weekend to get away from this whole overwhelming reality. For a moment just forget everything and do something completely different. Just put aside work and studies.
Also you don’t need to spend big money on it. Increasingly, you can hit the interesting sales. Starting from transportation sources, thru the attractions to the accommodation.
Sometimes I use sites like http://mlecznepodroze.onet.pl/ where you can find great offers and ideas for short trips.

For example, recently, taking advantage of  the weekend  I have decided to go to Sweden, to Karlskrona.
Kalrskrona – Promotion Video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=059PRzUJnlA&hd=1)
Two attractions at once. First – a really nice and clean small town, which lies only about 300 kilometres from Gdynia. Very wet kilometres – I must add J
And this is the second attraction - we're heading there by Stena Line ferry.
In addition to the ferry, which in itself is a good attraction if you have never had the opportunity to travel by ship, you will also find a few attractions on board. From the duty-free shop, where Swedes buy such amounts of alcohol that  it could create another sea J to a variety of restaurants, slot machines, a spa and a disco. And you have a whole night for this!

Of course this is all under one sole condition…

You must be able to win with seasickness J

But if not, then not all is lost for you! In this situation, the morning, and more specifically the amazing sight of the approaching land will be for you the fulfilment of all your dreams! J

There are some attractions from Karlskrona:
Stortorget – main square, with a monument of king Karl, a church and the city hall.
Biggest wooden church in Sweden painted in Swedish own colour – “Falu rödfärg”.
http://images.citybreakcdn.com/image.aspx?ImageId=1431872&width=680&height=680&crop=1

Brändaholm – source of houses in colour “Falu rödfärg” with white edges. And absolutely mandatory – Swedish flag on the mast.
Björkholmen – old and really small wooden houses which survived a big fire. Formerly they dwelt in them shipbuilders, now largely consists of several houses on one property.
Marinmuseum – marine museum, Sweden’s national naval museum – they have for example underwater tunnel and submarine.
And many other! Absolutely you should go and check it by yourself! J

Question for you:
What great place  can you recommend for a  weekend getaway? Or if you don’t like to travel, what else  can you suggest we should do? Please, provide your arguments.

  1. I love travelling. I love countries with a warm climate, because I hate cold weather :) I find it hard to choose a country place - which can be visited at the weekend. I don’t like these short trips. Weekend passes quickly, and we are a full two days a hurry. I dream of a trip to the Far East - to Thailand. I love Thai food, Thai culture. The climate in Thailand is my dream- wet and warm weather . I dream of a trip to Chang Mai in northern Thailand - there is a tiger reserve that can be stroked, because they are mild and are not predatory. Tigers are fed only cooked meat, do not know the taste of blood.
The next place that I dream of is southThailand ... Krabi and Phi Phi Island (James Bond island) and Beach Maya Bay (where the movie was filmed The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio)
Thailand is wonderful, but to visit it takes more time than one weekend. I hope that someday I'll go there :)

    1. I've heard that there is many beautiful landscapes and many great islands. But I don't know anything about their food. Maybe you can recommend your favorite Thai dish? :)
But I am sad that you hate winter! Come on! Let's make a snowman :)
Of course weekend trips are better for closer places, if we travel thousands of kilometers then we should stay longer. I would like to visit China (especially Great Wall, Tianmen mountains and Beijing) and India (Mumbai with Bollywood and mandatory ride a elephant).

    2. My favorite Thai dish is Red Curry with cocoa milk (with chicken or duck) Delicious! :) You must try!

  2. For such short trips I would recommend tours around Poland. Travels are not only foreign trips. In Poland, there are many interesting places. My suggestion is maybe not popular, but is really worth recommending.
    SUWALSZCZYZNA
With what you associate a Suwalszczyzna? Beacause I, since I can remember, with the fact that there is always cold. When in the whole Poland, there is -5, in the Suwalszczyzna, there is -20 Celsius degrees. Dont be discouraged because this place is really beautiful. Two days in these amazing regions and I feel that I am alive. After coming back from there I am a better person. What we can see and do there?
1.Biebrza National Park and Wigry National Park – for all nature lovers.
2.Kayaking on the Black Hańcza and Rospuda - Canoeing trip is a great opportunity for rest and making observation.
3.Diving in the lake Hańcza - this is the deepest lake in Poland. Even if you have never tried, I recommend it, because we can see how the human body behaves under water.
4.Famous Bridges in Stańczyki - viaducts that resemble Roman aqueducts.
5.A short distance to Vilnius and Trakai - You can go there for a day trip.
I also include a short video with beautiful views, which can make our eyes enjoyed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0QhPzal-3w)
Maybe it is not “trandy” region, but really really amazing.

    1. Absolutely, we have many great places in Poland. For all nature lovers I can also recommend "Kaszuby" and "Mazury". Beautiful landscapes, awesome lakes and forests. Just great places to calm down and rest.

    2. yea, that is true and its very fast to travel. It can took less than 3h to go there by car so if you finish your work at 5 o'clock you can start rest before even 9pm. This is rly awsome and I recommend this kind of fun to anyone

  3. Very nice article. I've never been in Sweden, but I reminded myself my weekend getaway to Bornholm Island in Denmark. I also came there by ferry, but unfortunately I had seasickness and the weather was rainy and cloudy. I recommend You to visit Borhnolm with a bicycle. The island isn't big and you can admire the beautiful Danish landscape riding on a bicycle. Personally , I like to spend my free time in an active way during the weekends. I like long bicycle trips or walks with my dog. It's amazing to explore new places. I would like to visit each European capital citiy in a weekend. There is a lot of cheap flights in various directions across the Europe. I think my nearest aim is Amsterdam - I love this city and I would like to come back there again.

    1. So you have a great opportunity to visit Sweden in 2016 :) You can also take your bike and look around Karlskrona. It's really popular.
Thanks to all these cheap flights we have a much better chance of seeing the world than even a few years ago. We have to use this opportunity.

    2. I like to spend time in active way too. I most like to riding on a bicycle at weekend. Just go to some new city or place and just travel and see what this place have to offer. its much better than travel by car or walking.

  4. I prefer to travel with sightseeing, I'm totally not interested in sitting abroad and doing nothing (beside lying down and sunbathing). I'm also not a fan of organized trips because I like to plan my own journeys.

There are many beautiful places in our country which I can recommend - we can find here something for everybody, every character. Personally I like peaceful sites, unpolluted with commercial truism and because I like active holidays, I choose mountains - especially Bieszczady Mountains.

Nowadays thanks to cheap flights we are able to visit almost whole Europe. Lately I've been to Budapest - overflowing with amazing architecture and even better national kitchen (if you like spicy food it's a must-visit city) - I recommend Langos on Florain Ter ;)

    1. I love spicy food! Firstly I will taste a Langos on "Jarmark św. Dominika" in Gdańsk in next year (I saw it this year but I didn't decided to taste). If I will like it then I will definitely go to Budapest to eat all of them ;)
Sometimes it's good to go to calm place and just do nothing. Only relax. But if I were to do nothing all the time then I would have gone crazy :)

    2. Ohhh.. I will like to go hungary on week or two. I hear and see some of short movies and they were awesome.
@Maciej can you tell me how do you find these nice and cheap flights? Maybe I will find something interesting.

  5. Very nice presentation. I took a ferry three times and always loved it! The best one was going around Mediterranean Sea, when each day we landed in different country - France, Spain, Italy etc.

As for my tips, tricks and recommendations I share the opinion from previous comments – I prefer longer trips than weekend-only. Even one or two days more can make a huge difference especially when you travel abroad. I have similar attitude as Maciej – I like to go sightseeing and plan my own trips. I want to make sure that I saw everything worth seeing, go to the best restaurants (to try local cuisine) and be sure that I didn't waste any minute. I'm very happy, because my girlfriend has exactly the same approach, so we both spend some time planning our trips.

I think each and every trip can be fantastic if the weather is fine and you have good attitude. Just to prove I always put a lot of effort into this, you can take a look on my plan about London and Amsterdam (I also have one about Madrid and Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Brussel, Berlin and next summer I'm going to Florence ;)

    1. Certainly a Mediterranean cruise provides a much more pleasant experience than the Baltic :) Sunbathing on the upper decks, fantastic weather and from time to time new impressions of the other countries? Oh, yes, certainly it is a plan for the future! :)

As for your plans, wow, everything planned down to the minute and every penny :)
I also always plan, but still leave little room to maneuver for improvisation :)
Plus for you for a football tour of England. Say hello to Kuba Blaszczykowski from me in Florence! ;-)

    2. @jakub thanks for links they are rly nice! I will use them in my next trip to amsterdam. I do want to plan everything too before trip. I want to spend as much as posible time on track. I were in london in last september and it was awsome even at night I ride by bike or talk with new peoples in local bars. Do you know anyother trip plans or relations of trips I will be interesed in that kind of subject?

  6. Great article with great pictures! I was in Sweden but I’ve never had a chance to see such lovely small, wooden houses. These are marvelous!
About (co do? nie wiem zostaw jak jest) travelling, I love it and I have to strongly agree with you - nowadays it’s no more about sightseeing. All tourists are just trying to make as many selfies as possible just to impress their friends on Instagram and Facebook. But you are right - we should sometimes rest from school / work and enjoy the moment in some beautiful place.

    2. Yea, Sweden have wonderful buildings and landscapes. I can live there when I will go to retirement. Just went out of home, watch how water flows, have long chat with my same age old friends... ohhh ideal.

  7. We live in times when there is no problem with moving between the two cities as well countries. Voyages are offered by various travel agencies. We can move the buses and equally airplanes, ships.
Being in other countries we are getting know the culture and customs of other people. Through travel we become more tolerant, and we tend to change our views, traditions or habits. By visiting new places we learn how to deal in unknown conditions. After wanderings, we are expanding our horizons of knowledge. Finally coming time, in which we have to go back home.
There will always be places for us unexplored and no matter what the practical or theoretical knowledge we have, we can always learn more by traveling.

  8. What great place can you recommend for a weekend getaway?
I highly recommend Bergamo for a weekend. It's small, lovely Italian city. The town has two centers: upper city, a medieval town, and the lower city. This two parts of the town are connected by cable car and roads.

There are really cheap airlane tickets from Warsaw Chopin to Bergamo Airport. Bergamo is situated about 40 km from Milan and 30 km from the lakes Como, so if you want to see something more you can easily go there by train.

    1. I've heard about Bergamo. I need to get a WizzAir Discount Club card and then just fly and fly :)
For me, most important place to visit there is a Monza race track and San Siro stadium.

But overall it is a very interesting region. In the range of several hundred kilometers is a lot of awesome places to visit.

    2. @elzbieta Thanks for this tip. I will think about this. Photos look like from movies. How do you plan you trip there? where do you find information what to see and where do you find ticket in good price?

  9. Nice city I am fascinated with so small cities, cause people in those places are usually very friendly and have something interesting to say. As long as I'm trying to do something extraordinary and out of mainstream I'd love to see temple complex Ranakpur in Rajasthan in India's state. There is a massive temple made of marble with a great amount of detailed and amazing decorations. What's more people near India are very spiritual and kind to each other so I find this place perfect for a getaway :)

  10. What great place can you recommend for a weekend getaway?
I recommed to go to Instanbul :) The city is enormous and also very varius. We can easily move from European to Asian side by a ferry, which is an extra entertainment too :)
Turkey has a lot of places worth to see like famous Hagia Sophia, a Blue Mosk for example. If you like a night life I recommend Taksim area :) There is a lot of clubs and places when you can eat and have fun with friends. I know Instanbul quite good, becouse I used to study there as Erasmus student.
If you are interested in near east culture I'm open to your questions :)

    1. Its good idea I will go there with pleasue but I think now its not a good time to pick this kind of countries? Did they have some problem syria and imigrants?

  11. That is a nice idea for spending your weekend. Although I don't know if it would be that great for me. I'm afraid I might be more tiered after that weekend than before starting it.
Also I don't think I'm much of a help when it comes to recommending places to visit because I don't travel a lot. But maybe you should consider going somewhere within our own country?
I'm sure there are a lot of amazing places that we don't even know about.
