Week 3 [03-09.04.2017] Astronomers Discover

On 22th of February 2017 NASA informed about a crucial discovery. The details of this discovery have been described in the prestigious magazine: Nature.
Astronomers have found that in the 40 light-years away system there are at least seven Earth-sized planets. The founders have announced that on these plants there could be similar climate to the Earth’s climate. There could be water on their surfaces. NASA supposes also that on three planets can exist  life. Common name of these seven planets is “seven sisters”.

The newly discovered planets orbit an ultracool red dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1. The planets have been called from the following letters TRAPPIST-1 b, TRAPPIST-1 c till TRAPPIST-1 h. Six planets have surface temperatures that range  between  0 and 100 degrees Celsius. Three of the seven(e,f and g) are on the habitable zone and the founders believe there may even have oceans on the surface. The objects go close the star and they are very close to each other. For seven of them the space between them is five times smaller than the distance from Mercury to our Sun. The circulations around TRIPAST-1 are (1.51 days, 2.42 days, 4.05 days, 6.10 days, 9.20 days, 12.35 days and for the last of them is over 20 days.

The star TRAPPIST-1 is a little star. It is a bit larger than the Jupiter. The temperature is much lower than the temperature of the Sun and its mass is only 8% of the Earth’s mass. TRAPPIST-1 is a red dwarf so its light has a salmon hue. The scientists suspect that very little stars can have many planets on tight orbits. The system TRAPPIST-1 has provided the first literal confirmation of this hypothesis.

In this historical discovery there have been used a lot of ground-based telescopes and space-based telescopes. The research started at the end of the 2015 with TRAPPIST (Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope) telescope based on the Atacama desert in Chile.  30 astronomers from a lot of countries have been involved in this research– from Belgium, United Kingdom, Switzerland, USA, France, RPA, Saudi Arabia and Morocco.

In the future these seven planets will be the main destination for astronomers in search of life project. To do this, there is under construction a very responsive telescope: James Webb Space Telescope(built by NASA, ESA and the Canadian agency CSA,  scheduled to be launched in October 2018) It will be positioned 1 million miles from the Earth The end of the construction is planned between  2022-2024. These two telescopes will search for  extraterrestrial life.

“These are the best Earth-sized planets for the James Webb Space Telescope to characterize, perhaps for its whole lifetime. The Webb telescope will increase the information we have about these planets immensely. With the extended wavelength coverage we will be able to see if their atmospheres have water, methane, carbon monoxide/dioxide and/or oxygen.” said Hannah Wakeford who is postdoctoral fellow NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

  1. 1. Do you believe in life in outer space?
    – Taking into consideration how huge is universe and how many planets, galaxies are there it's hard to believe the Earth is the only planet with life.

    2. What do you think about space travel to one of the seven planets?
    – We talking about 40 light-years distance. It's not possible unless we'll invent technologies as we can see in sci-fi movies. Someday it'll be possible, but it's a long way to that point.

    3. Would you like to participate in one way travel(without returning home) to such planets?
    – Well, I wouldn't want to be the first to go. Maybe if we could be sure that living there is possible :)

  2. 1. Yes I think that it is possibility to be other planet alike our Earth and there mey be some life on it. Like you said about these planet we can only predict until we explore them.
    2. I think that it is great idea...but it is so far from our galaxy, we can only do it with robots.
    3. It would be great to watch it and explore, but I have other plans to do on Earth, so i'd rather prefer to stay ;)

  3. 1. Do you believe in life in outer space?
Yes, I think there are lives on other planets in distant galaxies. I think it is very possible because the universe is incredibly big and I doubt that we are the only one in it.

2.What do you think about space travel to one of the seven planets?

I think that would be the most exciting adventure in my life. Unfortunately I think I will not live this moment.

    3. Would you like to participate in one way travel(without returning home) to such planets?

It's hard to say because I have a lot of friends, family and favorite place ... this is my home. I do not know what will happen to me on the new planet..

  4. I not believe in live in outer space. I would like to be confused. It will be funny if we have "planet neighbours". Other space nationality can have world without politicians, violence etc. I love it ;) Peace.

If other live really exist travel is natural progress. If in other country will be internet I can travel

  5. Yes, I’m sure that exist life in outer space. Why should we be alone, as a human race? That is radical. Even if we don’t have proofs, I’m convinced of other life, somewhere in space.

I think that space travel to one of the seven planets is curious. I’d like to some day have as much money as it necessary to travel to one of them. It’ll be legendary! Maybe, in the future it will daily routine, but now it’s sounds unbelievable! I’m counting days or years to my first travel.

I’d like to participate in one way travel to one of the seven planet under one condition, I can take infinite stock of my favorite ice creams!

  6. Do you believe in life in outer space?

I believe we are not the only ones in the universe and somewhere on other planets is life too.

What do you think about space travel to one of the seven planets?

I think it's a good idea. Discovering new places is exciting and you can learn a lot from it.

Would you like to participate in one way travel(without returning home) to such planets?

This is a very difficult decision. For today I would not decide on such a one way trip. I have some things to accomplish here. There might be impossible.

  7. Do you believe in life in outer space?
Yes I do believe in some kind of life forms in outer space, even intelligent one. Statistically it's almost sure that there is life in space.

What do you think about space travel to one of the seven planets?
We should make everything to make such travel possible, of course with colonization in mind. I'm not into astronomy, but I think we don't have space probes that could go much beyond our Solar System, not mention planets that are 40 light-years away from us. Maybe someday, but not in our lives I think.

Would you like to participate in one way travel(without returning home) to such planets?
No, I'm not adventourous type of person.

  8. Do you believe in life in outer space?
I don't think it has anything to do with our faith. Universe is a vast space.. there may be some kind of life out there, but also life is so unique that Earth can be only planet inhabitet by living creatures.

What do you think about space travel to one of the seven planets?
40 light years is 378429231084782 km.. I can't imagine such a distance and it's a lot harder to imagine travelling it.. It would take few generations. I don't think that this kind of journey would start anytime soon.

Would you like to participate in one way travel(without returning home) to such planets?
I would definetly do! It would be fantastic experience and awesome adventure.

  9. One of human beings’ most fundamental characteristics is curiosity. I reckon that it’s this very trait, that helps us challenge our limitations and discover the world around us. I believe there’s other life in the universe. It’s only a matter of time before we discover it. I think scientists will be able to come up with a drive that will make interplanetary travel feasible. I’d like to see a journey to one of the seven planets take place as soon as possible. An event like that would open up a new chapter in human history. However, I wouldn’t like to be a part of such a one-way trip myself.

  10. Do you believe in life in outer space?

    Thank you for interesting comment.
I think that there is another life in outer space. Because why not? Space is so huge that there can be other nations.

What do you think about space travel to one of the seven planets?

In my opinion this is great idea. Now we are travelling around the world so why not travel to other planets?

    3. Would you like to participate in one way travel(without returning home) to such planets?

    I would rather not.

  11. Of course I believe in life in space. I believe that there are not many planets with life because in my opinion this is miracle that there is life on Earth. This is good idea to send mission to some new planet in the future. We must have alternative way when something is wrong with our Earth. It's amazing that we can see so far in space. Personally I don't want to fly on mission without comming back to colonize. I would like to fly to planet where there are people. I like watching programs about space very much.

  12. 1. Do you believe in life in outer space?
I think that there is a posibility for this. There are so many planets, and also propably so many not discovered yet. Due to this, there is a big chance, that somewhere are living organisms. Maybe we will see in future, if we can find them.

    2. What do you think about space travel to one of the seven planets?
Going into space must be so exciting! But if anyone of the seven planets are interesting? I don't think so. More exciting will be traveling to the planet with other life and their highly developed civilization.

    3. Would you like to participate in one way travel(without returning home) to such planets?
Thank you, but no. I need to go to work in next monday :P
But seriously, these planets are boring, there is nothing, so I wouldn't.

  13. Thanks for presentation. I did not hear about it even though I was interested in the cosmos.
    1. It is hard to say. I've never thought about it. If the strangers are there, I would rather have a conversation with them.

    2. Mars is our only legitimate goal, because life on earth may soon be heavy. The temperature may be too high. On Mars it is too cold, but it is another planet on earth relative to the solar system. So I think we should colonize it soon :)

    3. I read about it I'm not crazy, but I've heard that Mars tickets have run out. So even if I wanted it I can not :)

  14. Thank you for this article, this topic is always very interesting for me.
1 Do you believe in life in outer space?
Yes of course. The Universe is so big that our minds can’t even imagine and understand this, so the probability that somewhere there exists a planet with the size close up to the Earth is very big. As we see, the last discover only confirms this. What do I understand by life on outer space? It can even be microbiological organisms hidden in the water on the other planet in the universe.

2 What do you think about space travel to one of the seven planets?
I think that now it is not possible to get there. I think that we have to focus on sending people to Mars rather than this newly discovered planets. If in our life people will land on Mars, it would be great discover and a new era in space discover.

3 Would you like to participate in one way travel(without returning home) to such planets?
I think that it would be a great experience but not for me. I prefer to read and watch movies about space travellers.

  15. Outer space is so huge we cannot even imagine what we can expect to find there. All space exploration so far has not found any life. Or men in black hid this news from usJ
But I believe it is possible that somewhere in space life can exist. I hope it can.

Space exploration is a very costly science. I am not sure we should spend money on space travel. I think there are other research areas which are more valuable and needed for people nowadays, especially in medicine. So many people on Earth die of simple diseases that investment in spacecraft seems a waste of money.

However, assuming there is unlimited cash for all sciences – it is good to know our neighbours.

Some agencies already offer tourist trips to space, so it is probable that such travels will be more and more common. But one way ticket? Only in case we destroy our own planet, which I hope will not happen.

  16. Given the fact that the universe is such a vast place it would be kind of selfish to think that humans are the only inhabitants there. The fact that people are not completely ready to meet that other life is a completely different thing.

When it comes to space travel, I gotta admit that it's a super exciting possibility and idea, however we don't really posses enough knowledge nor technology to travel further and in person. People didn't even manage to explore the oceans on Earth properly, so it will take long, long time to even gather certain information about planets that humanity keeps discovering.

And one way ticket into the galaxy... If I had to be honest I guess I would be too scared to travel that far, not to mention to an unkown place. I'd be much more excited to be part of discoveries on our beautiful planet that I am already familiar with :)

  17. 1. Do you believe in life in outer space?
I think it’s possible that there is something, but i was never thinking a lot about this.

2.What do you think about space travel to one of the seven planets?
It would be exciting to explore it, but unfortunately i don’t think it will be possible during my life.

    3. Would you like to participate in one way travel(without returning home) to such planets?
It would be exciting like i said, but i like my life here so i’ll rather stay.

  18. 1. Do you believe in life in outer space?
Of coarse! If human race exists in the universe, any kind of race could exist too, but I would not focus on planets similar to earth. I think life can evolve in many different environments we couldn't even imagine.

    2. What do you think about space travel to one of the seven planets?
It's great that we want to discover world around us. We should definitely get to know other similar planets. If we are going to destroy earth, we need to have backup plan.

    3. Would you like to participate in one way travel to such planets?
Yes, but only with my family and friends.

  19. 1. It's rather common belief that considering how big the universe is, being Earth the only planet with life is extremely unlikely. However complex life form existed on Earth for millions of years, and human civilization is only couple thousand years old.
So finding life through the space should not mean we might be able to find any advanced species anytime soon.

    2. For sure we need to find some new propulsion system. Maybe EM-Drive might become one. For now we are not able to go anywhere further than other planets of our solar system within acceptable period of time.

    3. Sure, if only I was able take my beloved ones I wouldn't hesitate.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 1. Do you believe in life in outer space?

    I wouldn't call myself a believer, I am an agnostic :)
As others have already mentioned, it is quite possible that we're not alone in the universe. But I'm down to earth man and don't care what is out there, in the space.

    2. What do you think about space travel to one of the seven planets?

It's just a hypothetical question. How many times have people stepped on the moon? When will we travel to Mars? Stop building castles in the air.

    3. Would you like to participate in one way travel(without returning home) to such planets?

No, I don't. There are so many places to travel to on our beloved planet Earth. Why would I want to go for a one-way journey to a distant planet?

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1. Do you believe in life in outer space?

It is very likely that we are not the only life in the universe. I’m convinced about that. Universe is not discovered, full of mysteries, theories. I keep my fingers crossed for scientists to do more discovers like that mentioned in the article.

    2. What do you think about space travel to one of the seven planets?

At the moment, it is impossible. The distance between our planets is too long. As above I believe that this travels it’s a matter of time.

    3. Would you like to participate in one way travel(without returning home) to such planets?

No, it's not for me, I want to stay on my land, but on the other hand I am very curious what would I find there.

  22. I do certainly believe there's life outside of the Earth. The whole space is just so huge it's simply nearly impossible that nowhere else apart from from our planet life would not exist. As to space travales I think whatever action might deepen our knowledge and understanding in a sensible manner is an action worth undertaking, but I definitelly would not like to leave my whole life here and devote myself to one of those one-way missions.
