Week 4 [07-13.05.2018] Fast fashion issue

Fast fashion is term that you may heard already. It is used to describe the term that big fashion retailers(like Zara, Topshop, H&M) use to produce new clothing lines every week, so that the last one is already outdated. That forces the customers to buy even more items. Trends are changing more quickly than ever in history. We don’t only have 4 main seasons that divide clothes but also some mid-season completely new trends or new items almost every day.

Clothes from fast fashion retailers are produced with visibly lower quality to maintain lower price of production. This leads to terrible production environment. We know that child labour in China, Indonesia or India exists but we choose to look away. Those big companies only want our money, they don’t care about quality that they provide.
Fast fashion is becoming a bigger and bigger problem. It contributes to more pollution to the planet. It is estimated that we keep our clothes for about 3 years, then we get rid of them without thinking about consequences to the planet.

Please have a look at this picture that illustrates the waste of clothing only in UK:

Only about 3% of clothes are recycled, despite what big companies declare. One household produces around 70 kg of waste each year of just clothes. That’s terrifying when you compare it to other resources from the table.

To prevent that problem,  we as customers have to be more picky. We can’t buy clothes just for the price tag or a new trend. When was the last time you thought about how your clothes wew made? Do you really need that new dress that you would only wear a few times and then dispose it? Many people suggest to buy clothes from eco-friendly places and sustainable brands. That is a perfect idea, except  for one thing- price. It puts many people off. We don’t want to spend more money on something basic like a white t-shirt, when we can have it for a fraction of the price in a different shop. We need to think more about where the clothes come from and when they go after we stop using them not  to leave this world as a giant garbage disposal of  our choices.

If you want to learn more about that I encourage you to watch these videos:
The true cost (on Netflix)

    – I don't know exactly, but I'd rather say not often. I never ever heard before about new clothing line every week. I'm not into fashion and I usually buy new clothes when old ones can't be used anymore (i.e. tear up clothes). Although, I'm looking more for good price/quality ratio rather than brand, I'd say I mostly buy from bigger brands. Mainly because it's easier. Shopping malls are full of them and all shops are located at one place.

Do you know any eco-friendly clothing brands?
    – No, I don't.

Did you ever buy something just for the price?
    – I used to buy t-shirts just for the price. They were made from lower quality materials than t-shirts in other shops, but were cheaper. After a while I realised buying them is actually worse investment than buying more expensive ones, becaouse they last much shorter.

    1. I think we are guilty of buying way too many t-shirts because of the price. It is good that you realized that is better to invest in quality not quantity. It it much better for the environment.

In the past I bought a lot of clothes in large corporations. All the time I needed new things and every day I fought with "no clothes to wear". Currently, I try to fight it. It isn't simple. But all time i think about clothes that i already have, and ask the questions:
    Do I really need it?
Now my problem is that I forget about hidden things so I do not wear them
Do you know any eco-friendly clothing brands?
Sometimes I look for such stores but the prices are much higher. B
Did you ever buy something just for the price?
Yes, in the past yes. In theory, I know that this is not good, but sometimes I forget about it when shopping.

    1. At least when you bought something try to use it, not just have tags on as it is just a waste of money.
I know it seems se easy to just go out shopping but many times we just but things we want not need and that is a big difference.

  3. 1.Differently. Sometimes I buy clothes once a month, sometimes less often.I have my favorite brands but if I like something from less well-known brand I also buy it.
2.Yes, I know the Nativ brand that produces vegan shoes. They are very light and comfortable.
3.No, the product which I buy definitely has to be nice and comfortable. Price is a separate issue, however, I try to buy products on sales and with discounts because I think that clothing brands impose too much margin.

    1. Wow, not that often I hear people know any vegan brands. That's great. Do you recommend them?
Yes, margin is usually fake just to make you buy things on sale.

I don't think I do it often. To be honest, I don't like shopping, so I do it only when it's absolutely necessary. When I decide to buy something it's usually something of good quality. This way I can wear it for a long time and don't have to visit any stores more often than once a few months. This also means that I buy from, as you may call them, bigger brands.

Do you know any eco-friendly clothing brands?
Eco-friendly? No, I don't know any, actually. Could you maybe suggest one or two?

Did you ever buy something just for the price?
It could have happened in the past, I think, but I'm not sure if it was ever clothes. As I wrote answering the first question, I buy good quality clothes. I'd rather pay a bit more and get something that I can wear longer than, let's say, 3 or 4 months.

    1. It is better to shop only when necessary, not just bored.
Some of eco-friendly brands are: Organic Basics, People Tree, Everlane and Armed Angels.
You can always go for pre-loved pieces or second-hands to find pieces no one else will have.

  5. I see that we watched the same movie on Netflix :) Regarding questions:
How often do you shop for clothes? Are they always from bigger brands?
Rarely to be honest, but when I do, I buy as much as I can. And yes, mostly from bigger brands. It's always a problem for me to go shopping, so I try to do it fast and be sure that I have clothes for a long time :)
Do you know any eco-friendly clothing brands?
Unfortunately no, but if I do, I would choose them over those not-bio. Recently I started to think about this whole eco topic and I try to be more eco friendly.
Did you ever buy something just for the price?
As I said before, I try to minimalize time spend on shopping, so maybe I bought something cheap and not eco friendly by accident. Honestly I don't pay much attention to the prices, because I buy clothes such rarely that even I pay much it's ok, because dividing this money per months without buying any clothes, it's still a low value.

How do you try to be more eco-friendly?
It's nice that you use clothes for longer amount of time.

    2. I try to be more eco friendly by consuming less meat, switching off electric devices when I don't use them

    3. Wow I'm surprised, not many people know that consuming meat contributes to one of the biggest causes of global warming.

  6. How often do you shop for clothes? Are they always from bigger brands?
Once every 2 or 3 months, I guess. I am not really interested in fashion so that is more than enough for me. They don't have to necessarily be from big brands.

Do you know any eco-friendly clothing brands?
    No, I don't.

Did you ever buy something just for the price?
Yeah, stock markets :) As for personal products, price is an important factor but so is the quality. That's why I need to find a middle ground between the urge to have high quality products and a limited budget.

    1. I hate fast fashion as well. Middle ground for clothes can be good option, you spend some money on the pieces and not overspend to the point where you just pay for the logo.
I suggest to check some eco-friendly brands and their pieces are usually good quality for decent price.

  7. I like shopping. I shop every time when I need something. When my jeans are old or used I buy new pair. Sometimes I like to buy something because of fashion. I try not to follow the fashion rules but some of them are really great and I enjoy to be part of it. I like big brands because their stuff are really great and it’s incomparable with cheapest companies. For sure it’s a rule. I don’t believe that company which sell their products for really small prices are good and nice. I don’t now any of eco-friendly clothing brands, but I think that most of companies try to be more eco with every year. I don’t what you mean by buy something for the price. I don’t buy clothes from big brands because they are expansive but because of good quality and fantastic design.

  8. To be honest.. I quite don't care. I buy clothes when I need them. I think it's like few times a year, when old ones wear off. I like my clothes to be longlasting but nowadays it is hard to find something with sufficient quality, not only when it comes to clothes. So when it comes to clothes quality and looks are most important, price is on third place.

  9. How often do you shop for clothes? Are they always from bigger brands?
I like shopping and shop quite often but always look for clothes that I can wear even when they go out of fashion. In that way I can wear them until they are worn out. My clothes are mostly from bigger brands but I know several small polish brands that I check out regularly.

Do you know any eco-friendly clothing brands?
Not really. I only recall that H&M have "Conscious" line, but I don't know how Eco is that. I am mostly interested in eco-friendly and not tested on animals makeup.

Did you ever buy something just for the price?
I don't think so, but I regularly shop in my favourite second-hand, its cheap and eco-friendly, so I don't feel bad when I buy, like 20th dress.

  10. How often do you shop for clothes? Are they always from bigger brands?

-I'm not the type of person which looks for the newest cloth trends. That's why I don't have need to buy new cloths every time. Let's say that my shopping during the year is 3-4 times. That's all.

Do you know any eco-friendly clothing brands?

Unfortunately no. Honestly I never think about this global problem. Now, after I read this article I try to focus on this topic during my shopping time.

Did you ever buy something just for the price?

Not ! I just don't waste my time in shopping mall. Maybe this is the best solution to keep minds out of wasting money on new clothes ;)

  11. I often buy clothes, usually a few things in a month. However, I do not follow fashion. I do not like to wear what everyone else does. I try to have my own style. In most cases, these are clothes of well-known brands, but I do not see a problem to buy something unbranded.

I heard that G Star Raw is an eco-friendly brand clothing, but I do not have any clothes of this brand.

There are a few things that are worth buying because of the price. In my opinion, they include t-shirts, sneakers, socks, etc.

The problem of over-production and consumerism is not just about clothes. She recently read about medicines. Apparently, the expiration dates on the packaging are often too low to force us to buy a new ones. This must change, otherwise it may end badly for our planet.

  12. 1. Unfortunately I always buy clothes from bigger brands, because when I would like to buy new shoes I go to the shopping center. There are no small stores there. And if they are, but unfortunately quite expensive.

    2. No, maybe because that it is more expensive as you mention in your article ;)

    3. It's hard question, because I don't remember this kind of situation. My fiancee obviously do it. In her closet you can find many unworn clothes :)

  13. I’m only buying clothes only when I have to do it. I hate shopping because it’s always takes me to much time and money. If I bought one thing, why not to buy another one over and over. Especially that I’m a customer of big shops so the choice is always huge. I like the idea of making eco friendly clothes and more further whole eco lifestyle, but I’m to lazy to look for specific brands which is can sell me recycled t shirt for example. Sometimes I’m giving old clothes second life as a rag to get rid of dirt out of my bicycle. But after all it’s lands in rubbish. Moreover, I also don’t know where I can get my old clothes, where someone could recycle it. And finally, the last question. The answer is partly in first sentence of my comment. I hate shopping and I’m buying things “in case of emergency” so I have never bought anything because of its price.

  15. I'm addicted to shopping, so I usually do clothing shopping 2-3 times a month.Usually, these are larger brands, but this is not a rule. I am a fan of small brands and I even bought something in a nice supermarket.

Not once did I buy something because it was at a good price.I do not know eco brands as such but I know that H&M and Reserved had their eco lines. In my opinion, the fashion trend has recently been to create eco brands.

Q.2.Do you know any eco-friendly clothing brands?
Q.3.Did you ever buy something just for the price?

A.1.Really rarely. No, I don't care for a brand. I look for a good quality of cloth and for it's price to be the smallest possible.
A.2.Unfortunately I do not know such ones. I assume they are a lot more expensive though.
A.3.If just for a price - not. But why should I buy anything what I do not need only because it is cheep? But if it was something not bad and cheep also then yes - it happened a few times that I bought something.
