Week 7 [18-24.06.18] How to Learn Faster

The time is very difficult for each student, the examination period has begun. During this time, we are preparing for exams, and in a short time we have to memorize and understand a lot of difficult material. The modern teaching system doesn't help to develop learning and thinking skills. I would like to present a few ways that will help you significantly improve the results of your learning.

1. Take notes

Researchers have proved that taking notes helps in learning. Students who take notes will memorize more important things. It is important how you take notes. When you take notes manually, you'll remember more, because noting on your computer is just an empty rewriting of words. We are not forced to analyze and paraphrase the material. While this is how the information is reaching us more consciously.

2. Take breaks

When we learn, we remember the best what we studied at the beginning and at the end. This also applies to foreign languages. If you want to memorize a material that is extensive and demanding you must divide it into parts and make a short break between each part. The optimal learning time after which you should rest is 40-50 min. We do not need much for a break, 10 minutes is enough. During this time, your brain will process the information you've learned during the first cycle.

 3. Take care of physical fitness and nutrition.

Physical effort helps in so many aspects, it is not surprising that it has a positive effect on memory as well. Take care of your physical condition. It's best to practice or walk outdoors, it will supply your brain with more oxygen. You also have to take care of what you eat. Eat meals every 3 hours, preferably 5 times a day. Eat foods rich in protein, cereal carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables. .During increased mental effort, your body needs a lot of energy.

4. Sleep

Sleep is one of the most important things for our body. It helps us relax, but it also has a significant impact on our mental performance. Deep sleep is a form of rest for our brain. During this time the brain increases the memorization of the information learned.

5. Repeat others aloud.

The most common mistake in the case of repetition is reading the text. And that's because this activity requires a very small amount of mental effort, and sometimes we think about other things at the same time. A much better way is when you tell another person what you've just learned. Research shows that this principle works even when your interlocutor doesn't listen to you.

6. Use the sense of smell.

The conditions in which we learn are very important. Factors such as lighting, smell, temperature are unconsciously remembered by our brain and associated with recently acquired information. It is best to learn in conditions in which we will write an exam, but it is often impossible. If, therefore, we cannot transfer the examination conditions to our home, we will transfer certain conditions from home to the examination room. For this purpose, you can use for example a chewing gum with a specific taste and smell. You will chew it only during studying and then during the exam. You can also use a specific perfume fragrance. I just hope it is not very intense, for the benefit of other people who are writing the exam with you

Scientists also give us examples of smells that stimulate our brain. Mint is good for stimulating the senses, and the smell of rosemary helps in memorizing.

Actually, all of them expect the last one. I always make notes and take break every hour.
And repeating what I have learned to another person is my favorite method because they can correct me when I am wrong.

    2. Do you have your own ways to improve the efficiency of learning?
I sit at a desk, in my working room. I try to not study in my bed or living room, where I can get easily distracted.

    3. Will you start using any of these methods to improve the efficiency of learning?
I am definitely not going to use my sense of smell as a way to boost my learning abilities :) I find it a bit weired. As for the rest, I am already using them.

    1. Be careful with aromatherapy. The scents have a strong impact on us and deeply influence our body.

  3. Yes, I use some of them and I think you mentioned the most important things which could be helpful to improve out learning process. I prefer to sleep a lot when I’m before some exams. It’s very important not to feel sleepy when you need to be focused on learning and books. The first idea which you mentioned is also one of my favourite. I prefer do notes because it helps me feel more comfortable with all of the materials which I need to keep in my mind. On the other hand it could be also very time wasting for somebody but not for me. I also like to take breaks for some physical activity. Mayme that’s the one which helps me to improve my efficiency of learning. Using the sense of smell sounds very promising and I will try this one when I will need to prepare for exam. Thanks for that!

I found that calm music helps me concentrate and enables me to remember everything just a little bit quicker

    2. Do you have your own ways to improve the efficiency of learning
As i wrote above - i try to have some chill out music sets (preferrably 2 hours long to know how long i have been studying) play as a background noise

    3. Will you start using any of these methods to improve the efficiency of learning.
I am very intrigued with the smell technique, i will probably give that one a try

I know most of the methods described above but I use only two of them, taking notes and repeating others aloud what I was able to learn. While both of them are extremely effective, taking notes is definitely my favorite.
Though I understand the importance of a good night's sleep, there's no way for me to stick to this advice. I simply don't have enough time.

I don't have any methods of my own. One thing I try to do during studying for the exams is waking up early and getting to work right away. I find the morning hours the most productive ones.

I like the idea of taking breaks.10 minutes break every 40-50 minutes seems like a lot, though. And in my case it might be too distracting but I will try and see for myself.

    1. I also like getting up early in the morning and learning. Great beginning of the day for me is good breakfast and a cup of coffee. However, the end of term is a hard time for me and I am not able to get up early in the morning and concentrate.

Yes, I always take notes, even if the material is simple, it helps me a lot later. When I read my notes there are chances that I remember a situation in which I took notes.I have my way to commit something to memory - I write the same thing several times on paper. That way there is a possibility I will remember it. Definitely, I must start sleeping enough. There is really big difference in speed of learning when I’m well-rested or exhausted.

    1. Writing things down several times on a piece of paper is my favourite way to learn new vocabulary and English phrases. I also lack some sleep, Anna. When I am sleepy and I have to work I make a lot of mistakes during programming.

  7. 1. Do you use any of these methods to improve the effectiveness of your learning.
I use most of those methods when learning. I take notes of my progress. I remember to take breaks, for that really recommend the Pomodoro technique. You work for 25minutes and take a 5-minute break. Really helps with productivity. I exercise few times a week, try to eat healthy. Also recommend to take some vitamins. I don’t like repeating others out loud. The sense of smell idea sounds interesting.

    2. Do you have your own ways to improve the efficiency of learning
For me efficiency of learning starts before actual time for it. I use Trello to manage what I need to learn. After that it makes me feel calmer. For me the best way is to read the text few times then try to write it down. When comes to exercises or programming I divide tasks to smaller ones. I take breaks, take vitamins. I put my phone away and tell everyone not to disturb me.

    3. Will you start using any of these methods to improve the efficiency of learning.
I could try using the sense of smell. Maybe gum is a good idea as it also relaxes me.

    1. Vitamins are also very important for me. I don't drink coffee because it washes vitamins out. I drink yerba mate tea instead. During a hard time when I have to study a lot I like drinking juice smoothies for example with spinach. It is a good way to supplement your vitamin level.

    1. Yes I do. At least I am trying to. There are really important factors to maintain in order to keep good form for learning. Otherwise final results can be not as good as wished. So I try to eat properly, do fitness, sleep well and have a good motivation in mind to learn :)
    2. As I wrote above. In a past I tried also binaural beats to hypnotize my brain into beta waves to keep my awake and ready to obtain new knowledge but my head only get hurt and afterall I got really sleepy ;P
    3. I think those are very good advices and probably I will use them in a future.

  9. 1. Yes when I learn I do my notes this is very good help while studying. Taking breaks is equally important.
Sport is important not only as an aid in learning, but in all our busy day it helps us to relax and clear the mind.

    2. I don't have any special tricks to improve the efficiency of learning. I use those listed in the presentation.

    3. As I answered in the previous question, I use these methods.

  10. 1. Do you use any of these methods to improve the effectiveness of your learning.

Of the aforementioned, I used a lot of sleep and breaks ;). As for the notes, I never learn from my own, always prefer some neat letter from a nice friend.

    2. Do you have your own ways to improve the efficiency of learning

Learning in the morning is very effective for me. Breakfast, coffee and learning. I will definitely remember more than just learning late.

    3. Will you start using any of these methods to improve the efficiency of learning?

I was interested in the topic of smells. I really like to test all perfumes, essential oils. So I think I'll check how it will affect my learning.

  11. I love analog, standard notes. I use many pages in my Moleskine notebook every day.
Brainstorming and learning without a computer and other devices are good for me.
I agree with the article. Regular sleeping in regular hours is required for effective work. I am interested in a smell. I will definitely read more about this method of increasing productivity

  12. 1. Do you use any of these methods to improve the effectiveness of your learning.

Yes, I take notes. Many notes. When I learn I try to rewrite everything to my notes and that's the way I learn quite fast.

    2. Do you have your own ways to improve the efficiency of learning

The best way is to try to focus very hard. People should power off every not needed device to keep their mind focused.

    3. Will you start using any of these methods to improve the efficiency of learning.

Yes, I think that I need more movement. I'm planning to go to the gym and eat better. Also I'm going to get rid of any alcohol and other similar stuff like cigarettes.

  13. 1. Do you use any of these methods to improve the effectiveness of your learning?
    - Well, I sleep every day, so yes :) Taking notes is the only thing that I do when studing. I just can't learn from not my own notes.

    2. Do you have your own ways to improve the efficiency of learning?
    - Not sure if it counts as efficiency imporvement, but I always firstly read whole study material and only then I start studying. And by read, I mean literally read, like a book, not trying to remember by heart.

    3. Will you start using any of these methods to improve the efficiency of learning?
    - Probably not, I don;t have trouble with learning. My current efficiency is enough for me, so I'll continue learning like always.
