Week 4 [19-25.11.2018] 1,5 degree more

1,5 degree more

Could the increase of 1.5 degree on the average temperature on earth have a disastrous effect for us?

The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report has recently been prepared.
It shows that the safety threshold for the average temperature increase in the world is 1.5 degree. Higher temperatures can have negative effects on the planet. This threshold has been reduced by 0.5 degree. Previously, it was predicted that an increase of 2 degrees would be an acceptable limit.
91 authors and editors from 40 countries worked on the report. They reviewed over 6,000 publications and responded to more than 42,000 comments and corrections from experts and government representatives. The final version of the report was accepted on Saturday, October 6th, 2018 at a conference in Incheon, South Korea, and announced on Monday, October 8th. The report will be a key source of scientific knowledge for negotiators who will take part in the climatic summit in Katowice in December this year.

One of the key messages of the report is that we are already observing the effects of global warming by 1 °C from the pre-industrial period. Nowadays, we have more extreme weather phenomena, just as the rising of the sea levels and the melting in the Arctic.

The report highlights significant differences in the effects of climate change, which may result in exceeding the threshold of 1.5 ° C compared to the situation where it will not be exceeded. For example, when the temperature increase stops at 1.5 ° C, the average sea level will rise by around 10 cm less by 2100, and the probability of a complete disappearance of Arctic ice in the summer will be 10 times lower than with warming of 2 ° C. An increase in temperature of 2 ° C will bring almost complete destruction of coral reefs, while a more ambitious 1.5 ° C objective would save 10-30% of these ecosystems.

The greater increase in global warming affects not only the environment but also directly the human life and health. As we read in the summary of one of the sections of the report:
„Any increase in global warming (e.g., +0.5°C) will affect human health (high confidence).
Risks will be lower at 1.5°C than at 2°C for heat-related morbidity and mortality (very high confidence), particularly in urban areas because of urban heat islands (high confidence).
Risks also will be greater for ozone-related mortality if the emissions needed for the formation of ozone remain the same (high confidence), and for undernutrition (medium confidence).
Risks are projected to change for some vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever (high confidence), with positive or negative trends depending on the disease, region, and extent of change (high confidence). Incorporating estimates of adaptation into projections reduces the magnitude of risks (high confidence)”

Do you think that the climate change is a big problem for the environment and humanity?
What can we do to reduce the climate change?
Can individuals make an impact on the environment?

  1. I’m not an expert and can’t evaluate opinions and researches, but I know that there are two different point of view. One says that humans are responsible for global warming and the other that it is a natural process and the same happened before people appeared on our globe. Even if I can’t judge what is true while hearing or reading that humans are responsible for I have impression that I’m cheated, that big money is paid to convince us and our governments to do things, which are harmful for our countries. If changing climate causes consequences mentioned in presentation it is a problem, because it forces many people adapt to new circumstances, but I don’t believe we can do much to prevent it. Of course taking care of environment lets protect nature and everybody can do something to protect the nearest surroundings, but I don’t perceive it’s a global influence, I think it’s rather local.

  2. Recently I watched "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey", where an astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson, perfectly explains how the increase in temperature on Earth affects and will affect our climate. This causes the melting of glaciers and an increase in the amount of water in the sea. The result is erosion and floods. The next effect is the heat waves. Due to these rapid changes, animals and plants do not have time to adapt to new conditions, which may cause them to die out. People should start making changes in their lives that will have a positive effect on the climate. Replace your furnaces with a greener one or use renewable energy such as the sun or wind.

  3. Climate change surely is one of the most important issues that are looming over our planet. One of the ways to stop or at least slow down the process is to work out a global regulations based on scientific analysis which all countries should obey. Individuals in Poland should refrain from burning dirty fuels and switch to more ecological solutions.

    1. Yes, that's true. What kind of change should individuals do in Poland ? Do you think that refrain from burning fuels is enough?

  4. I heard climat wormth is a cyclic phenomena and last from the very beginning of Earth existance and it is caused by Sun activity and has nothing to do with people's acts. On the other hand how people behave affects our environment without doubts. Big cities has far more worse air than at a country. For sure human is a nature being and has to be connected to nature and live in harmony with it. If it is disbalanced it affects on our health. So climat is very important. Nontheless we have influence only on local factors of climat change, not those coming from f.ex. Sun activity. In both cases it affects us and we should be careful with it and watch it and try to make countermeasures if needed.

To reduce climate change we can choose bikes more frequently than cars or even buses. Or at least to choose buses over cars. We can use less plastic bags. We can watch governments' hands in regard to issues connected with environment. We can rise society consciousness. At last we can develop technology helping using renewable resources and energy source.

An individual has some influence on climate, of course. But how big is this influence, that is the question. But anyway, there are bilions of people on the earth, so if every individual would care for climate and environment there would be a big impact. But as a single person we can at least try to make our best to add some little part for good direction and to give a good example for others. Maybe it will run a domino.

    1. I think that these examples are great. We should change our habits and maybe it will be an example for other people. What is more these changes are good not only for environment but also for our health.

  5. I think that this is a very big problem in time we approach to destruction of the world. First of all, we should stop exploiting our planet so much, besides all factories, power plants, mines should maximally reduce the amount of waste and try to produce materials in such a way that production has the least impact on the environment.
If every person will be respects the environment, I think that we could do a lot because there are a huge number of people in the world.
The less energy we will use, the less energy the power plant will have to produce. The more people turn a car into a bicycle, the better.
Segregation of rubbish is also important. I think that these "small" things have a big impact on the environment, but the biggest negative impact are large factories, power plants.

  7. I always believe that small changes that starts on the lowest level can have a really big impact on everything, but I think that we should first prioritize usage of different electric sources instead of fuels or coal. Just see how many rooftops in Poland could be used for solar panels or windmills, ofcourse switching to more eco transportation could help also, but still I would go for better electricity sources first.

    1. I think you are right. Switching to more eco transportation and use green source of power can help our environment and earth.

  8. Honestly, I am not into any theories or hypothesises about climate changes, but for sure this might be, or is already, a huge threat to enviroment and people. All these possible events such as melting of the glacier causing sea level rise, extreme weather conditions, large variations in temperature are up to be increasing soon. it needs to be taken care of by us, the humans. Each one of us may have an influence on reducing the impact of climate change by e.g. walking by feet instead of driving cars, choosing healthier products without palm oil (palm oil manufacture is a major reason of the greenhouse effect), no support for substantial consumption of beef(production of methane by cows). After all, an individual matters.

  10. I only have superficial knowledge on this topic so I don’t know how big this problem really is for humanity and environment. Therefore I also don’t really know how to reduce climate changes especially if it is a cyclic process. However I do believe that individuals can have huge impact on society. Just like with women's right to vote or abolition of slavery. Everything starts as an idea and if enough people will support the movement then there is hope that it will actually change something.

  11. I am very aware that this problem exists and we are all contributing to it. I think all the small things we do everyday are either helping the planet or destroying it- there is no in between really. In the future if the temperature rises the effects can be terrifying for humanity.
Big part of this is around energy, we need more energy so we use more energy, sometimes wasting it. I am really lucky and proud to be working in the company that produces it though the windmills, mostly in Denmark. They are making this world a better place not just using it to get some profit out of it without facing the consequences.
To reduce the climate change we need to do even the smallest things. Don't use use your car when you don't need to, switch to bike instead. Try to use items can can be reused over again and don't contain unnecessary plastic.

  12. First of all climatic changes, may be considered something natural - climate is not something fixed, and underwent many changes over last hundreds/thousends of years (the overall temperature on earth grew/dropped)
There may be multiple natural causes of climate sudden change (like huge vulcalo eruption, powerful geomagnetic storm etc.).
Also it is important to bring up, that as hard as we try, we cannot completely stop the global warming process - most of C02 is generated growing countries (in particular India). Luckily, such countries slowly started to invest more and more money in sustainable energy sources.

    1. This is a very interesting look at the problem. Developing countries are putting a lot of strain on our environment and are affecting global warming.

  13. You can't completely control the nature, I think. What we observe is that climate is constantly changing from years. It is very complex non-linear system with a large number of variables. Question is if we understand it completely, if can stop today's change without a risk for tomorrow. One is sure for me, that it will take time for the world to change. We need to learn how to produce energy efficiently and control it, but I am not sure how carbon emission tax could improve climate situation in my country. I don't get it.

  14. I’m not an optimist in this topic. As a humanity we are the biggest waster on this planet. In no time we destroyed almost everything on earth. Climate changes is one from the biggest problems. I think it will cause changes in other areas soon. But there are some problems which we will face it earlier. For example, under the water. A few weeks ago, I’ve read that till the 2050 we will fish out all the fish in the oceans. If we add it to the climate changes and overgrowth of population on earth, we cannot be optimistic. What’s worries me most is a fact that nobody cares about it.

  15. Recently i've come across quite interesting studies that shows that maybe we're, as species, on the edge of next "snow age" History shows that Earth have since its beggings came throught several glacial periods. Every period was an result of many eras that cause this situations. Ironicaly few of them was caused by way more oxygen in atmosphere then other greenhouse gases (as for Huronian glaciation period it was methene, but... you know ;) ). I know that everyone should be aware of climate changes, and to aim into brighter, less polluted future. Still we can't be so ignorant to think that we really can control every aspect of our planet cycles. Eventually, there was bigger and in certain ways, more complex beigns long time before Us and the sun still shines above our planets sky.

  16. Global worming is a fact and no one should discuss with it. Instead we shoud focus our efforts on stooping upcomming disaster.
I strongly beleive in science and the report leaves no doubt that global warming is great problem to our planet - to all life on earth.
Can we do something to reduce climat change? We can try - we can stop using cars, go vegan and zero-waste lifestyle but
it is pretty impossible to do all of it.
I think that every one of us is reposnible for the world we live in and every soingle one of us shoud do their best to help our planet -
even turning off liht that you don't nee at the moment helps a little bit. Of course it is not enough.
I read somewehere that only 100 (or less) companies are responsible for over 70% of climate change. Government needs to stop these big companies from polluting earth so much.

  17. Yes temperature is rising, there's no denying it. What is up for discussion are the causes, because as someone above mentioned - there were massive fluctuations of global temperatures over millennia.

Am I saying that we should stop all anti-global warming movements - no, not in the slightest. That's simply because all of their demands are -putting the warming aside - just good for the environment.

Can we do some good though? Well we can try. We can do it on a mikro scale. But for some real effects to take place effort is needed on the macro scale. And when talking about it - the example must come from the top.

  18. Yes, the climate change is a big problem. Actually, we have no idea, but the glacier are melting, intense precipitation lead to floods and deterioration of water quality. Animals and plants are not able to adapt such sudden changes. To reduce the climate change we can save water and energy, use ecological filters and do not smoke rubbish. Simple thinks that will affect the environment. I think individuals can definitely make impact on the environment! This kind of person has a huge impact on society. Someone have to be first and propose a good change that will have a great affect for years.
