Everything started in the early nineties when house music from the USA came to dominate dancefloors in Western Europe. Later on, that kind of music started to evolve in every country in their own way. For example in the UK, house was transformed into UK garage and jungle. In Germany house was mixed with trance. That new subgenre was called Acid Trance. Also they are pioneers in hard trance genre.

A new age of hardcore was called mainstream and producers started to embrace a slower style characterized by a deeper, harder bass drum that typically had a longer duration. Tracks started to become more melodic. At the same time one of the well known gabber music producers called The Prophet combined hardcore and trance music. He took a simple bass line and started to play it in the reverse. That technic created a new genre called hardstyle.
Hard music has a lot of subgenres. In this article I ommited a lot of concepts and facts to not to complicate this topic too much. As you see hard dance music is very extensive definition, particularly Hardcore.
Questions:
1. What do you think of electronic dance music? Do you have friends that are into it?
2. Have you ever been on any music festival? How was your experience? Have you been there alone or with friends? If not, are you going to take part in any in the near future?
3. Do you think fanbase of hard dance music will grow or it will decrease?

1. This kind of music is completely not for me. I'm a fan of old rock and metal. The only electronics I have contact with is in the Depeche Mode songs. 😉 I have a lot of friends who listen to techno, but we definitely don’t go to parties together. 😉
ReplyDelete2. I happened to be at several festivals like Impact, OWF or Opener. In each of these cases I was there only because of some particular artist and I think that it will look the same in the future.
3. I really don’t know. I have no idea on what scale it is now, so it’s hard to say for me.
I like some of the electronic music, but not a "hardcore" type I think ;) Its hard for me to specify what time of electronic music I like since nowadays it got so broad, and for me its hard to tell apart to which kind certain electronic music is part of so to say. Just to name few artists I like: Stromae, Caravan Palace, Parov Stellar, Moby. Other then that I'm really into instrumental Hip Hop and Reggae.
ReplyDeleteYea I have been on few concerts, Reggae Land and Opener. When I was at the Opener festival I went there knowing only few artists, but even though I had a blast there. Music festivals are really unique experience I would recommend to anyone.
I'm not too familiar with hard dance music, and neither of my friends are into it, so its really hard for me to say what its future will be, but I'm sure the hardcore fanbase will keep on raving ;)
I'm not a fan of such a music. I'm very affectionate to real instruments in music that I listen - maybe because I play some instruments myself.
ReplyDeleteMy collegue from work listen to electonic music but I don't know what kind of it - I know that he goes to Tommorowland concert every year.
If I understend corectly "hard dance music" is very specific and narrow subgenre.I don't think that it fanbase will grow a lot. Music change all the time, every year something new is created. I wonder what kinds of music people will listen to in the future.
I do enjoy listening to this kind of music from time to time, but not too much, after some time it becomes more like a pain than a pleasure. I can think of 2 friends who are into this kind of music and you are one of them ;) I have been to few small music festivals in my life. I have never been on any larger festival such as Opener or Sunrise and this is not something I will regret. I have been there with my friends. In the future I will attend one for sure once my friends invite me.
ReplyDeleteI believe that hard dance music lovers will eventually grow as this kind of music is quite fresh trend and has its potential to grow and evolve. This is still quite a young music type.
That’s really interesting for me that people doesn’t have same taste and you are able to discover something new by socializing. For many people hard music is a pain and that’s understandable for me. But to be honest I treat music as something to let my emotion fly away. No matter if it’s a electronic music, rock or rap I always like it hard no matter what.
DeleteI work in the music industry and work at concerts and festivals and associate with any music. Hardcore, hardstyle is a very specific music which tires my legs and after many years has ears. I observed that young people and youth generation return to the roots of hardcore and hardstyle. Artists such as The Prophet, Headhunterz, D-Block & S-Te-Fan again gain a lot of new fans. I visited Warsaw `Wixapol`with curiosity and there is really a lot of young people dancing to the rhythm of hardcore seeing the old 90 'rave. in my opinion, this music is coming back and gaining popularity among the younger generation. The most interesting events for me are Defqon 1 and Qlimax, it is worth experiencing this event for the artistic and visual setting.I think electronic music will always be a development among new generations of youth.
ReplyDeleteI think that electronic dance is fine for parties, but honestly I'm not a fan of this kind of music. This doesn't mean I don't listen songs belonging to this kind, but I prefer to listen something else, rock for example. Funny thing is, that music festivals i have ever been was Disco Polo Festival (as a part of university party) and Rap festival. I was there with friends and I think we had a good time together. It's hard for me to say something about hard dance music, because I didn't listen any song belonging to this kind before. Also my knowledge about fanbase of hard dance music is poor.

ReplyDelete1. When it comes to electronic music, my soul stole techno, dark techno. Of course, I like to listen a lighter vibe, it depends on the mood. My friends likes different music, also electronic music. I think we have so many beautiful sounds we should not restrict to one kind of music.
ReplyDelete2. In the past, I often went to festivals, rock and electronic. Of course, it was great, but I think it's not for me at this moment. It just torments me. If I have to choose between a festival and a weekend trip to a place where I never been, I choose the second one.
Maybe I just have grown old :)
3. I believe that the electronic scene is constantly evolving and it certainly goes in the growing interest.
Why does it torment you now? For me festivals are great way to meet new people and spend time with friends from other countries. All that happens on accompaniment of my favourite music. I get it that it may be tyring but at the end of the day I never regret and I’ve got lots of wonderful memories.
DeleteMusic is not my story, but I’m always fascinate reading that there is some group of people who likes very specific genre, I’m always curious how it happened and how musicians (I’m not sure if we can call them in such way in this context) came up to idea of something new. What a pity, that you didn’t attach some videos to hear it. I was on a concert but never on festival and can guess that fanbase will fluctuate.
ReplyDelete1. What do you think of electronic dance music? Do you have friends that are into it?
ReplyDeleteIt's nice but not the genre I'm listening to. Yes I have a few friends that are big fans of it and even go to concerts on the weekends in different countries.
2. Yes but not with hard-dance or electrical music. I prefer more rock kind of music on the concerts. I prefer going with friends to have good time with them. Maybe I could go to one of those in the future.
3. The fan base of this genre will grow, it's fresh and few. It feels like liberation from more static kinds of music and connects people though music.
1. I really like electric music. Now is time of that kind of music. It's good to dance, and I have a lot friends which like "techno" etc.
ReplyDelete2. In Poland, In Warsaw in may is organized music festival about name: Instytut. This is Show which come music stars from wround the world. I was there with my friends
3. Yes, I think that the fan base will grow. It fresh music and new.
around the world*
DeleteI was never interested in such music genre, what can I say, I couldn't feel those beats. The second question is mainly directed to people that were on music festivals, it's also pretty tough to describe one, because I've never participated or seen any. Just once I was in Płock to see audioriver festival but it was just as spectator - outside. I'm not a festival person so for now I'm not thinking about taking part in any. Last question is very hard to ask when You're not into this subculture and not very into such vibes.
ReplyDelete1. What do you think of electronic dance music? Do you have friends that are into it?
ReplyDeleteIt depends on the subgenere. I like psytrance, trance, techno and drum and bass music. But it also depends on the artist and how original is the music. Most of EDM is very basic, very stale and very boring. Most of the artists produce exactly the same songs using same synth presets, same sample packs and using same song structure. You don't have to be a music expert to hear how basic and boring most of the EDM music is. It's good for a party, but for the most part it's just a product to sell on expensive festivals.
2. Have you ever been on any music festival? How was your experience? Have you been there alone or with friends? If not, are you going to take part in any in the near future? I have been on few music festivals. Generally speaking I liked all of them. Listening to the music live is much more exciting than at home :) I have been there with my friends, it's not fun at all being alone during music festival, at least for me!
3. Do you think fanbase of hard dance music will grow or it will decrease? Hard dance music fanbase is currently decreasing (as far as I know), but it will probably increase in the future, when the music evolve. We have seen how fast mainstream taste change over past couple of years.
Music you described is actually something new to me. For quite a long time I used to play classical music but this is completely different story. I’m not really attached to specific genre, I rather try to pick what suits me best from many different genres. I have friends who sometimes are listening to much weirder music than Acid Trance or Hardcore, so yes, I do have friends that are into it. Unfortunately I’ve never been on a really big music festival but this year I decided it’s about time to change it and I go to the Orange Warsaw Festival. Hope it will be great. It’s really hard to predict how popularity of different genres will form in the future. Currently we have so many genres of music which are still evolving and constantly new ones are created that I don’t want even try to guess what will be popular in a several years from now.
ReplyDeleteI think it's fine as any other genre. I might listen to it if it plays in radio. As far as I know I don't have any friend into this kind of music.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to any big music festival besides some small events. I also don't have any plans to attend any, because it doesn't interest me at all.
Difficult to say as I'm not an expert but I think that if dubstep found rather big fanbase, then any genre can.
I like music, but not electronic music. It does not appeal to me, to listen to sounds made from a computer, without any lyrics or instruments. Last summer I attended the Off Festival in Katowice, I really like the choice of music and the fact, that it’s not very crowded too. You can choose between a variety of different genders, in fact usually every stage is corresponding to a different kind of music. There are also a lot of other activities going on in the area.
ReplyDeleteI guess the popularity of electronic music is growing and even more sub-genres will develop in the future.
I've never heard of this kind of music. My friends don't listen, but it's very interesting! It is very cool that music allows such opportunities and everyone can find something there. I've never been to a music festival, but I am very curious about their climate. It can be a cool experience. I will definitely choose one someday. Maybe it will be a vacation plan. Who knows? There are so many festivals in the world, so I'm happy to have a lot to choose from. Surely someday I will go with my friends and together we will see how it is to play at the festival. This is definitely interesting. I think that a lot of people are interested in this type of music
ReplyDelete1. What do you think of electronic dance music? Do you have friends that are into it?
ReplyDeleteYeah I have friends who listen to that kind of music, and it's quite popular here in Warsaw. There were some clubs, as far as I remember, that played such music like Metronom, Parking Bar etc. I was maybe two times on such parties and it's really like gym. This music has something, but let me say, attendence to this kind of parties was... experiencing :D
2. Have you ever been on any music festival? How was your experience? Have you been there alone or with friends? If not, are you going to take part in any in the near future?
I was on Woodstock couple of times, on Orange Warsaw Festival and I think that's all. But I wasn't ever on electronic music festival, maybe I'll try in the future.
3. Do you think fanbase of hard dance music will grow or it will decrease?
I think it will grow. 10 years ago nobody heard about this among my friends, but now it's quite popular. So we will see, but the forecasts are promising.
I must say I didn't know about name of such music, but sometimes I do listen similar music. Now I know what to search on youtube to listen more. I enjoy such music because it has a lot of energy in it. I don't know any person to listen to such music, it is not really popular in my enviroment.
ReplyDeleteI've never participated in any festival. But I would go to festival on Caravan Palace (electroswing). I would take my friends with me but none of them listen to such music :(
I believe that fanbase will increase if it will be more melodic. I think that is good way to enqurage more people to such music.

I’d like to recommend some of artists that are in my opinion great for newcomers to hardstyle. First of all this genre has two styles euphoric (more melodic and emotional lyrics) and raw (with more aggressive kicks and less vocals). For me the best point is when dj’s are combining both this styles in their production. You can check d-block and s-te-fan, phuture noize and wildstylez if you are interested in.
DeleteGenerally, I don't listen pure electronic dance music, but I prefer combinations with rock, pop and rap sometimes. I don't understand skills of typical DJ during parties or concerts, for me it's something like just press a buttons. But yes, some of my friends really love electronic music and sometimes we discuss about it.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have been multiple times on music festivals or concerts. For me, it's the best way to hear favourite artists live and to listen their vocals (to compare the difference between live performance and version recorded in studio). And again, I don't understand the difference here, don't get me wrong :)
I believe that it will get more popular. This type of music is still evolving so we'll probably see the final result in the near future
History of djing is pretty old and it has started from vinyls. Mixing and scretching can be an art too. There are so many devices that dj’s are used live to make their set more attractive. Here’s a video of a guy called md&a who is playing live on midi controller.

1. What do you think of electronic dance music? Do you have friends that are into it?
ReplyDelete2. Have you ever been on any music festival? How was your experience? Have you been there alone or with friends? If not, are you going to take part in any in the near future?
3. Do you think fanbase of hard dance music will grow or it will decrease?
1. I think it is a curious kind of music as almost any other - it can have nice pieces of music, and some less nice ;9
I do not have fans of this kind of music among my friends or at least I am not aware of it.
2. I haven't. Unless yerly student carnival count into it. But I was on variety of concerts alone and with a company. Maybe I will take part in some music festival, but I don't know for sure, though I would like to try such experience.
3. I can't tell. As many people there are, as many music tastes there are. If you looked carefully you would find some fans of all kinds of music I think. What is more, sense of art can chang with time so it is another coefficient worth mentioning. So it is hard to predict.
For me, electronic music is Kraftwerk, besides I am a faithful metal fan, moreover, I hate dancing. I'm too old to argue about the music, so I will not say it.
ReplyDeleteI was at Iron Miden, The Prodigy and AC / DC - each time it was a great experience for me. I will sing my favorite song together with 60,000 people for the rest of my life. After every concert, despite the fact that I was terribly tired, I was floating above the ground.
It seems to me that heavy dance music will develop - young, energetic people need such a crazy rhythm to get rid of excess energy.
I'm definitely not a fan of electronic music. Only sometimes when running, I listen to electronic music, and unfortunately, I do not run too often. Moreover, it’s not easy to find exactly adequate bitrate for specific training (or I just don’t know how to look for it efficiently). My friends are also not fans of electronic music, I don’t have literally any friend who truly likes this type of music. Unfortunately, I have not been to any music festival so far. I always go to concerts of a particular artist. My predictions about fanbase are absolutely worth nothing, because I don’t have enough knowledge in this matter. But if I had to decide, I’d say that the fanbase will grow. This type of music is new, fresh, so I guess will become more popular.
ReplyDeleteI have been on a few music festivals but none of them was oriented on music genre like this. You are the only person I know who is a fan of such music. And thank to you, I've changed my opinion about people who are participating in events like mentioned in your article. I thought that 'normal' people don't listen such kind of music and "surprise!" - good fellow, smart ass and strange music. And it works ;)
ReplyDeleteP - What kind of music do you like?
ReplyDeleteMe - Techno
P - ahh, ok ..
Did that so many time in my life, and its always fun to see people reaction :) EDM is such a robust genre with sub-genres that have even more sub-gernes that it hard to follow even for true enthusiast, and yet most of the people tend to make a 'facepalm' face when techno is mentioned. I love it, along side many other music genres, but this one is the one to go with if you wanna get some of what in Berlin is called 'Tanztherapy' ;)
I like festivals and clubs alike, had a pleasure to take part in few of the first editions of Love Parades, but that was ages ago, and since then there was many smaller, local events as well as masive venues like: Sonar, Awakenings, The Warp, Outlook and many more :)
I this that EDM funbase is quite stady at the moment, and quite frankly I wouldn'y like to have to many people in it, so it wont turn into mainstream and become more like other gernes are ... 'im a star'.
I prefere it still to be as it was since Faitless said that 'God is a Dj' :)
At club or sth like that, ok, at running ok, but I can't say it’s my favorite kind of music. I have one friend that likes this type of music, and he offered me to go with him to festival, but is not my cup of tea.
ReplyDeleteLast year I was at Orange Warsaw and it was great, I sang my favorite song with Taco, also with Dua Lipa, Florence, can you sing techno? :D
But I think this kind of music has a lot of fans and there will be more, it's simple to tap your feet, bum bum bum and dance ;)
I like electronic music in general, but this kind of music doesn't convince me. But I like dubstep, trance or even house more.
ReplyDeleteI was on the MHHF in Giżycko several times and the atmosphere there was always great. Each time I was there with a lot of friends and I met a lot of people there.
And in the future maybe I'll go on the Opener or to concerts as part of the Żywiec tour, the future will show. Honestly, I don't know if I have any friends who are interested in this kind of music. And I don't have much knowledge about hard dance music and it's hard for me to say what the future of this genre will be like.
I am not into hard dance music, but I have gabber friends. In Poland there are Wixapol parties, where polish hits (e.g. Krzysztof Krawczyk's) are remixed into high BPM. For them it's a joy, but I rather can not imagine myself being there :) It is not my world. I don't care about music genres, I don't have to stay cool, I just appreciate good music, but I can't recall a hard dance hit that I could recommend you to listen to. However I've been to Opener music festival with same friends - we chose artists we like and we had great time there!
ReplyDeletePersonally I'm in to almost all kinds of music and that also include electronic dance music like swing, trance, techno a lot of house genere and more. My friends also listen similar music and becouse of this we had a large group of people who went tougheter on trance festival called OZORA that take place in Hungary. Expirience that we found walking barefit with people from all over the world was something that can not be describe by world becouse mood that could be felt in the air was out of this world and for sure in the future I will visit some other festivals. In my opinion fanbase is similar to genere it still evolves and change it's hard to say if it's going to increase or decrease becouse of the sinusoidal type of being that music has. I'm sure that everyone can find something for themselfs in music and worrying about fanbase is secondary aspect.
ReplyDeletePersonally speaking, I like all genres of music and have no special preferences. I did never attend any concert – I simply do not enjoy spending time in such overcrowded and noisy places. I am particulrlu into listening to themes from computer games, especially those old – it helps me bring back some good memories from my childhood. I cannot explain this but I also like 80s. Recently, we tend to listen the best hits from 80s in our room in the office (every other day we switch to themes from games, e.g taverns music compilation) – it really boosts our concentration and creativity
