Week 5 [02.12 - 08.12] Nintendo Switch - how to be the best, being the worst?

Nintendo Switch is a game console developed by Nintendo and released in 2017. As a successor of Nintendo WiiU, it develops the concept of combining mobile and stationary gaming. For me, this console is a phenomenon, because it proves that people don’t want only bigger and better looking games, but they want games which can give them joy. And Nintendo Switch can give a lot of joy!

Nintendo Switch is a hybrid console. Simply speaking, main hardware is a 6.2-inch tablet. In the box, we can also find a special dock and two controllers named Joy-Cons. The main concept of Switch is a possibility to change a style of gaming in a moment. For example, you play during travel in the portable mode which is possible because you can slip your joy-cons in the sides of the tablet. Then, after coming home if you want to continue playing on a bigger screen like TV, you can just pull out joy-cons, connect the tablet to a special dock and that’s it. A few seconds and you switch from mobile to stationary gaming. If a game has a local multiplayer mode, you can just give one of the joy-cons to your friend and just play together;  you receive a game console with two controllers which you can have whatever you want to. Isn’t that beautiful?

After its premiere, Nintendo Switch was compared to the other eight generation consoles, i.e Xbox One and Playstation 4. When you compare specifications, Switch is just a poor rival with no power to deal with other game consoles. To be honest, the console is closer to phones and tablets than to current consoles. But even the best game console will fail without games. And in this field Switch is a definite favorite. Mario games, The Legend of Zelda and many, many indie games make this console the best option for everyone. Moreover, Switch has many more games with a local multiplayer than other modern game consoles. I hate the fact that I can't find any game other than FIFA or Call of Duty that I could play with another person in the same room and Switch is the best solution for parties or meetings.

To sum up, Nintendo Switch is a good example  proving that you don’t have to be stronger than your rivals to be better. Sometimes you just need to be different and find a different solution to achieve success. Poor hardware with atypical construction and  a large library of games for everyone can beat better graphics and larger open worlds. At this time I don’t have my own Switch, but I think that it’s just a matter of time.

  • Do you have Nintendo Switch? If the answer is “yes”, how do you rate it?
  • Do you think that graphics is the most important feature in games? Or do you value other features?
  • What would your perfect game console look like?

  1. I don’t have any Nintendo device and the last one was gameboy years ago nevertheless I do agree that this device is innovative and unique. In my opinion, it shouldn’t be compared to other consoles because it’s a different kind of device. Ability to grab your console with you and later finish the battle on tv at home is great and local multiplayer is also a big advance. For me graphic is really important in games but to be honest I think that I would handle that considering that my ‘tv console’ is portable. I think that my perfect console would be the one which doesn’t need any in-payments and I pay once when I buy it and later only when buying new games.

    1. So I understand your favourite console is Playstation 2 or another console made earlier than in 2005 :) The question is: would you rather pay more for a full game or pay less but with some extra payments in the future?

  2. Do you have Nintendo Switch? If the answer is “yes”, how do you rate it?

Last Nintendo devices I've been using was Game Boy Color and then
GB Advanced. To be honest I've got huge crush on them back in the beginning of the 2000's but once I get older I didn't keep my interests into mobile games. For now, I don't feel like it would be necessary for me to buy extra device while the smartphones are much more powerful. I get the point if someone is really psycho-player but beside that - naaaah.

Do you think that graphics is the most important feature in games? Or do you value other features?

I think that those kind of devices are aiming into playing while heading to work/school and that's why idea standing behind them is much more to entertain for short period of time than providing complex relation between player and games' characters bathed in gorgeous graphics. It's more about simplicity, at least for me.

What would your perfect game console look like?

For me it would be some simple multiplayer that's able to play ad/hoc for short period of time. Something close to LoL but hopefully much less time consuming :D

    1. I understand your point of view, but to be honest I'm not a kind of multiplayer gamer. So do you think that mobile games nowadays are as complex as the console one?

  3. Device you described seems to be quite interesting, but unfortunately I’m not a type of gamer, so I didn’t feel this excitement but I really liked the idea to use this kind of device during parties. I suppose it could be great opportunity to break the ice. Back to the questions, I don’t have Nintendo Switch and I’m not planning to buy one. I don’t think that graphics is the most important thing. To me the social aspect of playing games is much more important. Nothing is perfect so it’s hard to imagine how would look the perfect console. But perhaps it would use some features of virtual reality or things like this.

    1. Yes, VR is a great option, we have a lot of fun during parties when we tried to beat Rocky Balboa in "Creed" VR game. If Playstation 5 will have a better VR helmet, would you buy it?

  4. No, I don't have Nintendo Switch but I was thinking about buying it, because I'm happy owner of DS and 3DS. I prefer to play on PC, though, so I decided not to buy any new console.
I don't think graphics is the most important aspect of the game and the size of mobile games market is probably the best proof of that. I believe gameplay and story are much more important but it also depends on the game.
For me the best console would be a device which allowed you to easily replace parts and upgrade but still offered unified experience like today's consoles and had good price to performance ratio.

    1. I also have DS and 2DS and lately I spent more time playing on these console than on stationary consoles. Do you think that streaming could be a better solution than replacing parts in your perfect console?

  5. 1. I don't have Nintendo Switch and I'm not buying this console because I hate Joy-Cons and prefer to play AAA.
You can't play this pad. Besides, I hate Mario Carta and the people who throw bananas!

    2. In my opinion, graphics are important because we see technological progress. For me personally, with better graphics, it's better to enter the game world.

    3. It must look good so that it looks nice in the room, a comfortable controllers (the Xbox is probably the best now, I don't know if it can be improved?) And a lot of power to last a few years.

    1. Why do you hate Joy-Cons? I'm pretty afraid that they can be to small for my hands, but I still think that I could get used to that. Do you think that new Xbox and Playstation would fulfill your requirements about perfect console?

    2. Yes, it's mainly about the size of these controllers. I've always had contact with Playstation or Xbox controllers, which is why I prefer at least this size.

You have to remember that there is also Joy-Con Pro, but few people have it, and it's a bit unfair when one person plays controller Pro and the other people use normal controller.

After the presentation of the Xbox Series X, it seems to me that the new Xbox controller will be perfect, because it will be slightly thinner than the current one :)

  6. Unfortunately answer is no, I don't have switch, but I hope that in close future it will change.
I think that graphics are not important at all, the most important value in game is whole climate which it can build. There are a lot of games which graphics might be considered as poor but it works great with whole story and more realistic graphic would ruin whole game.
I have only one perfect game for consoles and it's old pokemon game. I don't need anything more! :D

    1. Yes, Pokemon is one of the most common reasons to buy Nintendo consoles. Would Pokemon be your first game if you buy Nintendo Switch?

  7. I don't have Nintendo Switch and honestly I have never want one. As a kid, I always dreamed about Sony PS, and recently I have bought Sony PS4 and I'm very happy about it. I'm the big fan of games and I prefer console games that PC's. First of all there are many games that provides only for consoles, and my favorite games are created just for console devices.

Generally, from my side of view the PC's games are the past tense, and the future is for consoles and VR.

In regard to differences between Nintendo Switch and Sony PS, of course Nintendo is a winner in portability, but I like to have my game in the big screen to feel the graphics and if you prefer multiplayer games as me, PS would be the better option because the PS has a online service dedicated to providing community-based multiplayer experience, when Nintendo Switch has a very basic online system.

The graphic are very important in games, it helps to feel the story. But in my opinion the most important thing in games is gameplay, the great gameplay can works with not such cool graphics, but the coolest graphics will never make up with bad gameplay.

The perfect game for me is a multiplayer surviver with amazing graphics and interesting story mode, it will be also cool if it will be huge map with ability to space exploration in the game. I believe that plenty of people would like to play such a game.

    1. I'm not a multiplayer gamer, but I know that many people prefer that type of gaming. You said that your favourite games are console exclusives. What are your favourite games?

  8. I do not have a Nintendo Switch, but I understand that Nintendo consoles always offer more interaction than products from other producers they are able to imitate real situations like playing sports, riding car.etc. and the participants can feel really involved this way. I guess it is a good idea for party and some other meet up with
    friends or family.

I personally own a Playstation 4, but only have a few
    games to play with visitors.

I guess graphics are an important part of games, as they often display the world of the game with almost real life precision. I like games to be multiplayer, so they can make it possible share the fun among a group of friends.

I do not have a vision of a perfect video console,as for me it is only a uncasual situation to be using one.

    1. It's true that Nintendo consoles are made more for meet ups and parties. Do you think that Microsoft and Sony consoles should have more couch multiplayer games?

  9. I've never had a handheld console, nor had I ever any Nintendo product, but I think that Nintendo Switch is a very interesting device and offers a bridge between casual, mobile gaming and a full-fledged console system. For years I've been a vivid Playstation enthusiast, and starting my journey with the first generation of Sony consoles, I still often like to play the older classical titles - even though the graphics may obviously seem utterly outdated when compared to todays standards, I do believe that the gameplay is the most crucial part of any gaming experience, and titles like the first instalments of the Resident Evil series or Metal Gear Solid still have a lot to offer.
Even though technical aspects play an obviously important role in the console market, I do believe that a great console should offer something more: the company's approach to the gaming market should not limit game developers by any means and make sure they maintain a healthy relationship; sometimes poorly targeted marketing can affect the product itself - the Nintendo 64 console was a truly powerful device, but due to the company's family-friendly image it missed some great titles targeted to an adult audience, while Sega's need of control over the creative process of developing games for their Saturn console ended up with a unsurprisingly short list of titles on their platform.

  10. I don't have a Nintendo, but i own a PS4, does it count? :) No, graphics is definitely not the most important feature. It is important in annual games or in games that are developed by big companies, but everybody know many great games, that don't have great graphics. The most important feature of the games is their ability to entertain us, or produce fun or whatever you call it. This ability depends on many different factors and graphics is definitely not at the top of them. My perfect console game would look exactly like The Witcher 3, but it's probably because I'm a big fan of the whole universe.

  11. Unfortunately no, I don’t have Nintendo switch. Now I’m going on vacation, so with Nintendo 12h flight would be so much pleasant. Although I prefer Sony Play Station console. Graphic is not the most important feature in game, but it’s at second place. First is user experience and fun which comes from gaming. My perfect game console should be like: mix of 2K (basketball game) + open world like Witcher 3. Nice combo, I know :)

  12. I don't have new nitendo switch and to be honest last console I bought was Nintendo advance SP many years ago the one with old game slots and first screen with build in beam function. In my opinion graphic ain't always the most important element of games becouse this is only a small part of product that might bring joy for the player. Story, mechanics, animations are also very important but I think that the most valuable part is well created illusion that hipnotize player and keep him in artificial world. I'm more of a pc dude so I'm not sure but I would love to have console with VR build in eye lens with controls connected to some sort of rings that I could put on my thumbs and some crazy engine with huge processing power that could be attached to belt ;)
