Week 5 [02.12 - 08.12] Future of mobile apps

For last couple years there was a huge breakthrough concerning usage of smartphones on our daily basis. 10 years ago phones with touchscreens were gadgets that mostly tech freaks were interested in having them, right now it’s hard to imagine life without phone which helps us to schedule a week, make a call, record a nice vacation video or even replace a gaming console. By looking at current mobile market we can say that future is finally now. Mobile phones have better parameters than our computers few years ago. One of breakthroughs in this area is that smartphones are now supporting bluetooth gaming controllers. What means that there are games that being developed for playing games on mobiles which are using such devices. This takes mobile gaming to the whole new level. Few years ago we’ve had games like angry birds or simple clickers and today we can have almost the same user experience as playing on xbox or playstation. On market we can find few companies that are filling new niches in this field. They’re creating dedicated smartphone gaming controller for even better experience and to improve ergonomics. Right now we can forget that it is still our phone, not remote console. (Maybe until we see incoming call from our parents).

But there was also huge breakthrough in area of software development for mobile phones. Earlier we just had one option, to write in native programming language for each platform but right now we have plenty of option and almost everyone can develop simple mobile applications without need for employing whole team of mobile developers.
Google and Facebook introduced for us two great technologies for creating such apps.
Facebook created something called React Native, what basically can be created using web development programming languages which are compiling to native platform language and such software we can deploy straight to play store or app store.
What’s even more interesting google made another breakthrough in development across all platforms, I mean every platform that can use google chrome as browser. They’re supporting technology called Progressive Web Application, which means that after we write for example page for some events, internet game or even apps like some kind of calculators, they all can be installed on computers, mobile phones etc. without need for downloading those apps from play or app store. That’s slowly getting popular and in future it might compete with apps that we’re using today.

How do you think mobile apps will look few years from now?
What do you think about moving gaming experience to mobile phones?
Do you think that new style of development might replace the old one?

  1. It’s hard to say how mobile apps will look in few years but in my opinion, the biggest field to do something new in this topic is to make apps more integrated with the phone. I would also like to see in the future something which will allow me to use my phone apps on computer. I know that there are apps like AirDroid etc. but I want each app to have such possibility. For example some communicators are now available to use interchangeably on phone and pc but I want more. I don’t like playing games at all so I don’t think that I can say something about gaming on mobile phones. I think that new development will always replace old ones to some extinct.

    1. What kind of apps do you want to be able to use both on computer and mobile phone?

  2. How do you think mobile apps will look few years from now?

I think that they'd me as simple as possible, providing low-level entertainment, almost no action needed (as Instagram, which is basically just steering at the pictures) and of course what you mentioned at the end of your article - installationless. I guess it's because people are bombed with information and that makes them over-stressed.

What do you think about moving gaming experience to mobile phones?

I think that already mobile gaming market is blooming because people want to spend time during way to work/school or even having 15 minutes break anywhere. People would rather missed their wallet rather than smartphone so I think that's highly possible that mobile games would take majority of gamer's community cake.

Do you think that new style of development might replace the old one?

If we would check the newest data related to smartphone usage it's clear that people are off from downloading new apps to their phone and they're much more concentrated around few top apps on the market that's why applications you mentioned might be crucial to get people interest. From my perspective it's huge market that will start getting fulfilled rather sooner than later.

    1. Do you think that apps like facebook or instagram may go through breakthrough to avoid over-stress feeling? I've seen that there are already apps which are limiting your daily time on social medias. Do you think that one day people might stop using media apps as often as it's currently happening?

  3. It’s extremely hard to predict how the mobile market will look like in a few years from now. All these things are changing so rapidly that I don’t even try to guess. With the computing power of today’s mobile phones, there is no doubt that these devices are perfect for playing even highly demanding games. The screens are getting bigger and bigger each year and that definitely improves the user experience while playing games. My current phone has 6,4-inch screen and a few years ago it could be called a giant but today no one is even surprised by this size. I predict that native development for mobile platforms will become less popular over time. React Native is a really interesting technology. You could also mention Flutter created by Google. It’s currently one of the most serious alternatives for writing cross-platform apps. I believe it will attract a lot of developers in the near future.

    1. Of course but there was some noise around flutter few years ago, it was top technology on most of javascript's conferences but now I feel like people are forgetting about it

  4. 1. As the power of the phones increases, the games will improve in terms of both graphics and mechanics.

    2. I have always treated mobile games as something that can be played in the waiting room. Nothing replaces the convenience of desktop consoles.

    3. What do you mean? As for games, they will not replace me, for me as a player there must be a large screen and a dedicated console. I don't like half measures.
Although on the other hand you have to wait, the Internet become stronger (5G), Clouds are developed (e.g. Google Stadia, streaming games) and if you can connect the controller from Xbox or Playstation, connect to the TV, there will be full service and there will be no delays, why not? For now, it remains on Xbox / PS4 / PC and the phone is just an add-on :)

    1. I understand your point, but maybe some day we will be able to use technologies such as nintendo switch.

  5. I think mobile apps won't change that much. I believe the technologies will stay more or less the same but there will be bigger impact on multiplatform frameworks, like React Native or Flutter. Functions of the apps will probably change a little, though. There's the trend to combine many independent apps into single ones and I think it's going to continue.
I think it's cool and mobile phone is very good gaming platform but many developers forget that it's not the device for every genre of game. I believe there are many types of games which are more suited for mobile platforms than large ones and they should focus on those instead of creating another clunky FPS.
I don't think new style of programming is going to replace old one. PWA's are still websites after all and they offer poor performance, especially in more compliated applications. Also, there are many apps which make sense only on specific platforms and creating application for android only in multiplatform frameworks is pretty pointless and just add unnecessary complexity.

    1. Don't you think that PWA which provides you offline first usage can replace simpler applications such as pintereset, instagram or uber?

  6. I think, that the progress in the development of mobile phones is staggering to say at least. Changes are noticeable every year.
Our smartphones are getting more and more sophisticated, almost as we speak.

I think there is huge demand for all kinds of applications, as all kinds of industries need them to facilitate their services from food delivery to booking airline tickets. Possibly in the future more and more things will be managable by phone.

It turns that calling is becoming a secondary function of phone, instead it is all about the provided gadgets.

It only frightens me to think what the phones of the future will look like, it is very possible, that they will be equitped with a large portion of AI.

  7. The mobile market is undoubtedly one of the most dynamic and critical fields in terms of growth and importance to most of the IT industry. The current trends emphasise the importance of cross-platform design and I believe that we'll see this trend become more and more crucial; applications are expected to be offering seamless workflow regardless of the platform and offer complimentary functions that allow the work to be done on many platforms at the same time, e.g. working on a document on a laptop and finishing it on a phone or copying important information within the app from a phone to a computer in no time.
The mobile gaming experience is no different, with games such as PUBG or Call of Duty being prime examples. Those games offer quick and casual gameplay; they don't offer separate gaming experience, but something rather complementary to the main, standalone product.
The change in the development approach is inevitable, I believe that the technologies mentioned in the text will gradually replace more traditional, platform-based technologies and frameworks; after all, every change in technology is related to efficiency in all of its aspects.

  8. I think that in next few years mobile apps will look and work better, because our devices will have better components too. The fact that mobile games are starting to resemble titles from desktop consoles is nothing new, because few years ago some studios tried to port some concepts from Xbox and Playstation games to smaller devices (you can check some titles like Modern Combat, Asphalt or Gangstar made by Gameloft). I think that a bigger revolution will be when services such as Google Stadia or Xbox Project xCloud start to work and then we can play the same games like we can on stationary console. I'm not familiar with PWA so it's hard for me to answer if this style of development will replace the old one.

  9. I think that they won't be much different. Smartphones haven't changed since last few years and the change in this area is essential to introduce any major change in mobile apps. Personally I think, that mobile apps will develop their augmented reality features in the nearest future. I enjoy games the most in front of TV, but looking at the number of mobile visitors on the websites, mobile gaming will be more and more popular. It's impressing how mobile games have developed in recent years. New style of development can possibly replace the old one, but only for the most common use cases. For the more complicated ones, where performance is essential, native applications could have an advantage.

  10. In our time mobile apps have become one of the primary ways people to communicate, plan their lives, shop, work and play of course. In my opinion mobile development is one of the innovative and intently growing field. In the future mobile applications will be more developed for sure. As I can see now the smart wearables have become gaining ground rapidly, and mobile development could focus on that sector. As smart wearables hardware continue to improve, this opens more possibilities for mobile applications developers. Another thing that developed very fast is M-Commerce, more and more internet shops make their own apps, I think that in future we wouldn’t have local malls, and people will be shopping only by internet and especially by their mobile devices, or with the mobile assistance help.

I’m not sure that mobile games can compete with PC’s or console games. Many PC’s games can be turned into mobile games for sure, but you will never have the same feeling playing mobile game than playing game in couch or your favorite chair in the big screen. Mobile games it’s good option for not be so boring in the transport on the way for the work or school for me, but it’s not the same as computer games.

As I can see the most popular techniques in mobile app development are machine learning and deep learning, apps like FacApp, Google Assistance, Sir, Cortana become usual in our lives and this techniques aren’t new for developers anymore. More mobile apps will adapt to augmented reality and virtual reality, these apps shows he real world experience in mobile app. I truly believe that PWA’s are the future, but for now native apps have more advantages than progressive one, they offer more secure and more features, but it would likely to change in the future.

  11. First of all I’m fan of mobiles games. I used to play PUBG mobile version when I had time in previous work :) I think there is not much place to improve mobile games. When you are designing mobile game you have to focus on limited screen and visibility. I hope that this gaming experience that you are saying about will be move to mobile phones. I’m almost sure that new style of developing will replace old one. It’s so much easier and using old style programming.

  12. There is a lot of possibilities with new technologies and one does not simple tell how they will change our current lifestyle. Applications are very friendly for users and I think that they will only become more straightforward and easy to use. Personally I'm not a huge fun of playing games on mobile phones of course sometimes I check some fresh or hot titles to see what new they bring to the industry and I'm sure they will only become better but like I sad at the beginning mobile games are not my thing. Good old PC, right mood and tasty pizza is the best for some gaming evening with friends. I'm not sure if the new way of creating apps will replace the old one but in current century everything changes really fast and in most cases changes provides easier and faster ways of doing things.
