Week 6 [16.12.19 - 22.12.19] Digital Clothing

DIGITAL CLOTHING

Current age is full of amazing inventions, we have privilege of seeing transformation in the field of computer science that come in to contact with everyday life on every greater scale. There are countless areas of use but one that I'm most interested in is entertainment business. By the use of this presentation I would like to share with you one of many softwares that today industry apply in order to create such high quality products.

Marvelous designer is relatively young program that specialize in creating digital clothes. This software allows users for creating patterns of their choice almost the same way like traditional tailor offered but in this case all tools are replaced by average computer mouse. You can cut, sew, adjust, design to your heart content and when you are ready Marvelous provides you with high quality simulation of garment that appears on model of your choice. You can switch beetwen different types of materials and details, moreover, you can upload poses for model you provided to check how clothes look whenever you are slouch or stand upright. Game and film industry use this program to make base that it's afterwards send to another software in order to push digital clothes even further and create highly detailed models you can see in triple A and big-budget products that cannot be distinguish between the real live garment we see everyday.

Fashion industry also pay attention to this software. There are first designers that experiments with digital clothing and even sell products that doesn't exist in real life, once you can only wear them in virtual reality. This field is yet evolving but imagine that in the future you could upload your body scan on website and see what clothes suits you best. Of course there is always unknown factor but possibilities to check how new hoodie from overseas looks on you seems fun.

1. Do you use any software for work? Do you imagine work with out it?
2. How do you find idea of closing conventional clothing shops for highly advance web sites that could simulates garments of your choice?
3. Did you ever wonder how clothes made for special effects scenes were made or try to catch the moment in movie when they replace real once?

  1. As a software developer, I use a lot of tools and working without them would be possible but so slowly that it’s almost unimaginable. It’s obvious that I’d like to see 3d models in different positions in online shops to try chosen clothes on them. To be honest I think that as for now, such things may be too expensive for the clothing industry but maybe in the future, it will be possible. Sometimes when I see for example a t-shirt that is waving in a game in such a realistic way that I’m wondering how they did it.

    2. Exactly, this days working without software would be very uneffective. I agree that creating whole tackling that you can buy in specific shop could take too much time and many but I believe that is the future such things might be profitable.

  2. As a developer, I couldn't imagine my work without certain tools.
According to your second question as soon as it potentially become profitable it finally will happened but for now i think that it would take too much effort ( = money) to become real. The amount of clothes that are being sell each day are too high to be digitized but as soon as it can be done with AI I think it might actually happen.
Last but not least I was really wondering so many times how they're achieving so thrilling effects and I couldn't imagine how many hours had been spend to prepare it!

    1. I have very similar point of view but in my opinion shops wouldn't have to digitalize all of their clothing but only the newest. Unfortunately every time they provide new collections all of the clothes must be created again and this involve huge amount of money.

  3. 1. As a programmer, I'd definitely work hard if I couldn't use my favorite IDE (WebStorm and basically all JetBrains IDEs). Not only programs are important to me, but also hardware: monitors, keyboard, mouse, operating system on which it works, etc. Over time, such small things affect the comfort of work.

    2. That would be something really cool! You can scan at home and try on different clothes to see what will look cool! We already have technology that will ensure this, but the cost of implementing such an application for a selected store is certainly an obstacle. In addition, to be a standard in every store, the largest clothing brands would first have to implement on their website so that others can determine that it is a standard, and now every clothing company that wants to mean something on the market must have such an application.

    3. Sure you do. Even when I watched the video in this article, I was impressed! Something fantastic!

    1. New software and functions that they provide is truly amazing and I'm completely astounded when I see what people can create with them. Exactly creating everything on paper this days would be extremely unprofitable.

  4. I`m working as 2d animator. Actually I like to spend a lot of time in different 3d software as hobby and learning something new. I`m trying to do a few things in Marvelous Designer. This is really great software for making digital clothing. It`s more than 3d software. You need to know sewing basics to work with it.
Marvelous Designer is very popular in gaming industry. A lot of big game studios work with that software to create cloth for their games, for example : CD RED Project, Ea sports, Ubisoft.

It`s great idea. I believe that we have this technology in the near future. Actually I mean that we will have 3d scan tool in each house too ;)

    2. I also like to test new softwear, especially when I see what you can achieve with it. I agree that basic knowledge of sewing could be useful but I found a lot of patterns on internet that are very handy for new users and working with them can enhance your abilities.

  5. 1. It’s a completely new topic for me. To be honest, I’ve never heard of it before.
    2. It seems extremely interesting. Over the last few years, everything is moving towards digitization and doing everything without leaving home so it seems quite probable in the near future.
    3. I’ve never focused on this factor, but that’s proof that currently the special effects are at such a good level that we may not notice them at all.

    1. Current special effect industry amaze me. We have such high lavel of marging reality with computer generated imaginary that catching every glimpse of it is very hard but I believe that also provides a lot of opportunities for people to create awesome stuff.

  6. It's hard to say as I'm working in very different field, but when I'm thinking about it I think it would not be possible to work with such efficiency on projects without dedicated software
I've never heard of something like that before. It sounds very interesting but it also might be very expensive to make such technology global and used by everyone.
Well not really, I was on arts before but never got really interested in 3d clothing etc. Only thing I was trying to catch during such movies, was trying to guess when there's an actor on scene and when is stuntman.

  7. I work as an analyst so I have different kind of tools at work, but it would not be possible and I can't imagine work without them. I think that many people prefer to try clothes before buying them so conventional stores should still be availabile just like bookstores. I didn't ever wonder about that, I only know that actors have special green suits to place animation in post-processing, but I thought that just a 3D model made by specialists.

  8. I guess that today, every single industry and computer technology are simply inseparable. The growth of the 3D and AR technology has led, for some manufacturers, to use lifelike simulations that often generate savings and offer fully customisable products, so using such technologies by the fashion industry seems like a sensible move; the traditional retail today is facing a decline in numbers due to the fact of the unstoppable online sale - people buy clothing more and more often online, without seeing the product in real life. The only question is: how expensive such business model would be? Companies like Nike are already offering fully customisable shoes, but they are noticeably more expensive than traditional 'production-line' shoes.
The only thing I know about special effects being used in gaming and film industry is that they are based on highly detailed physical simulations, and that this technology has made a great step in the past twenty years; what has been reserved for highly specialised computing mainframes back then can be generated by an affordable processing unit today, or it can be easily processed by a cloud computing service.

  9. Yes, as a developer I both use and create software. I can't really imagine working without them. I mean it'd be possible but writing and compiling software on a paper is quite hard and ineffective way of producing software.
I both like and dislike the idea so I believe they would coexist. I really love the digitalization of fashion industry and trying clothes online would be nice but I think it'd also make the entry curve larger. Because of that smaller stores and local fashion designers would have trouble to sell things because of the cost of the technology and maintaining such service. That's why I hope traditional shops, "traditional online" shops and high-tech shops will all exist at the same time.
Yes, when I watch sci-fi or superhero movie, I wonder how much of their costumes were CGI. Usually I can't catch the difference but there are movies, especially low budget ones, that hide the special effects poorly.

  10. Yes, I use software for work and I can’t imagine how my work would work without them. I think it is possible to deal with everything with pen and paper, but it will be much more time consuming. No, no, no. I used to work in Zara and since then I’ve become cloth freak. I buy many things online, but I prefer old, traditional way to buy clothes – at “offline” shop :) In “Avengers” we have amazing costumes and was wondering during movie are they real? I try to watch only movies where I can’t see the difference between CGI and real clothes.

  11. I use all kinds of software on daily bases, like compilers (IntelliJ), Adobe, Skype.

I think in the future as software becomes more and sophisticated, we will become with tools, that will help us to make our everyday lives more colorful and dynamic.

Also in the field of animation, I know that many movies production companies are bringing dead actors to the screen with animation.

I can image that in future software will be made available, where people will be able to create their own customized cloths. Everybody can make something that reflects their own style without relying on fashion designers. This could possible make fashionable cloths cheaper.
