Week 5 [18.05 – 24.05]  Is it a plane? Is it UFO? Nope. It's "just" Elon Musk.

Haven't Elon change the world enough? His accomplishments could have been easily spread over all
few beautiful minds. Fully automatic electric cars, "5th type of transport" called Hyperloop, Roofs that create
power, Space rockets wich can land, and offcourse his plans for colonisation of Mars.
Few weeks ago we were able to see chain of lights flying through the night sky. For those who didn't
know what in the hell this is, it must have been strange experience, but I think that fully acknowledged people also
had their jaw at the level of their shoes. What was it? It another launch of 60 satellites for tests of project Starlink.

Project Starlink is a plan for satellite constellation, which will be a huge competitor for other companies providing internet. Thanks to this the internet can get to the places that have big problem
with it. Up to year 2027, Musk is planning to send to space almost 12 000 of those beauties. For a
comparison at this moment above our heads there is "only" around 2,4 thousands active satellites so one
more time we can say that Musk is reshaping our world, even our space. The Starlink will cost at least 10
billion dollars and is set to eventually fund Mars project wich will be offcourse much, much more expensive.
Wise move Elon!

Each satellite weighs 227 kg and is equipped with solar panel providing electricity, stars tracker helping with orientation in space, Hall engines allowing orbital maneuvers and also deorbitation after the
years of service and camera.
According to SpaceX, prelaunch of the project will be possible after seven rounds of satellites
"shooted" in the sky. For tests there are 256 terminals the size of "small pizza" locate on the rooftops
of 5 buildings in Washington, where are centers responsible for satellites. Those terminals will be able
to communicate with satellites.
Astronomers have started complain, that because of too much light reflected from satellites, the
sky observation become a lot harder. That is why the latest launch contained modified satellite, so-called
"DarkSat", covered with a coating that reduces the amount of reflected light.
What about space waste?
According to information published by SpaceX, the current generation of satellites consists of components
that will be 95% destroyed when they enter the atmosphere. The next version of the structure is to be built
in such a way that it completely disintegrates when returning to Earth. Therefore, despite the use of engines
with very low thrust, which do not allow precise determination of the place of deorbitation, the satellites
entering the atmosphere should not threaten the population.

1. Do you think Elon Musk is making good move sending this much satellites into the orbit?
2. What is your favourite Musk's invention?
3. Do you sometimes look at the night sky and think "Damn, what is out there?" ?
4. Are you excited about Mars project?

  1. I think that satellites can have very positive impact on science and technology, but I also have some concerns about it. In the early 70s, NASA scientists were worried about littering the outer space. Today we can approach a critical point, the effects of which include changes in the atmosphere. I'm afraid that soon instead of the stars at night, we will be forced to watch garbage in the sky during the day. 😩

I am not up to date with all Musk's projects. Recently, I was most interested in electric cars and research on renewable energy sources. At what stage is the Mars Oasis project? And... have you heard what name Musk gave his son? (gossip!)

    1. That's true, space garbage is a really horrible "collateral damage" of conquering the space. I hope that those new ones will vanish in 100% after ending their mission by burning in the atmosphere.

  2. Piotr it was a very interesting article. According to information posted by you, the current generation of satellites consists of components that will be in 95% destroyed when they enter the atmosphere. What about ozone hole? Is it safety?
To be honest it is hard to say that this is a good move to send so many satelites into the orbit.
I agree with Zuza on the number of satellites in the sky, we won't be able to distinguish between stars and satellites on the sky.
Musk’s projects? I am not up to date with this topic too. Just like Zuza, I am fascinated by electric cars and their environmental impact. I was speaking about electric cars under the article about hybrid cars posted by Jakub.
I have heard about the Mars One mission and I’m curious about it. It is mission based on human settlement on Mars. Mars One is a global initiative whose goal is to make this everyone’s mission to Mars. Have you heard before?

    1. Yes I have heard this before, from what I've read, "Mars" project has been always Musk's apple in the eye. I think that we needed this man to put this abstract (for now) idea into work. For us it is still sci-fi, but human expantion is inevitabile and we need to make some steps.

    2. That's right! I will keep an eye on this information as well.

  3. I'm not sure if sending that much of satellites is a good idea. There is a lot of rubbish in space since humans started exploring our galaxy. Exactly like on Earth...
About Elon Musk... he is an extraordinary man. A genius some people say, others - fool. I think he created so many great inventions. Hyperloop is my favorite. I'd like to try this for a ride 😸I wonder if he will ever colonize Mars ... I'd love to take part in it, and you?

    1. I think I would like to join this project, but after everything would be set up :D. I belive that first group of people send to Mars will have one way ticket and although I'm excited about this I just couldn't left everything and everyone I know for this.

    2. If I'm right in article above claim "According to information published by SpaceX, the current generation of satellites consists of components
that will be 95% destroyed when they enter the atmosphere." 🤔so I it not bad.. I'm worried much more that scientist cannot see clearly sky to explore it 🥺

    3. Kinga, even now our orbit is called "space trash" 😰 and you have right - in near future scientists wouldn't be able to see sky clearly 😞

  4. 1. Do you think Elon Musk is making good move sending this much satellites into the orbit?

In every such cases the main question is - are we sure that's only for providing Internet? I'm not much into conspiracy theories but whenever innovative and wise moves are taken I'm trying to gather some strict info about it rather than being super optimistic in the first place. But the other hand while the electricity where introduced back in the days people were skeptical too so I'm trying to be open minded :D

    2. What is your favourite Musk's invention?

Definitely the electric car - once I wrote an article about it. They've got multiple times better money, infrastructure, know-how and experience supplied competition but still their cars set standards.

    3. Do you sometimes look at the night sky and think "Damn, what is out there?" ?

I would love to but I'm so in a rush at work right now that I don't have energy left to think about stuff like that - just right now I considered how bad is that!

    4. Are you excited about Mars project?
I'm not much into it so I don't know if he's planning to do it within our lifetime - if so, I might consider become more interested!

    1. I feel you, I just hope that this is not the scenario when Elon is just collecting more companies which have impact on our Planet like Infinity Stones and just one day he will "snap his fingers" :)

  5. I think that I don’t have enough knowledge to judge Elon Musk about his activities in ‘the sky’ but as a third person looking for it, I think that he is doing a good job. I like him for his ‘space’ inventions and I think that thanks to him, we will find out and examine things that we’ve never dreamed about. Some time ago when one of his satellites was traveling I was lucky enough to see it on the sky and that made me think “Damn, what is out there?”
To be honest I haven’t heard about the Mars project much because I didn’t have enough time to follow the news but now I have to read about it. Thanks!

    1. I was suprised when I found out that you can see a sattelite from Earth. I also had this privilige when I was in Mazury few years ago. Hypnotising view.

  6. I think Elon Musk is doing awesome job by sending all of these satellites into the orbit.
I remember, that even last month, I was observing the sky, waiting for the Starlink to be visible from Warsaw, not to mentioned that time when he lunched Tesla’s Roadster with Bowie’s “Space Oddity” playing in the background. As for my favourite Musk’s invention it would be Tesla Motors, or mentioned above Starlink. Tesla’s are very important for the future of our planet, and if he will actually succeed power the cars, and the planet with renewable energy, it will be huge breakthrough. Since I remember I was fascinated by outer space, sci-fi, and I hope I will see the days when people will live on Mars. ✨

    1. For sure, I think that here in Poland, we don't feel the power of Tesla, honestly I see Tesla in Warsaw "maybe" once a month. In US you see dozens daily.

  7. I wasn't actually earlier in this topic so I don't have much knowledge in this area. I think that assumptions are exciting but we never really know all their purpose and how it can escalate during upcoming years.
Regarding favourite inventions I have to keep to what I love - cars. On my own I'd love to have Tesla in few years. That's actually very funny that about 10-20 years ago every kid was dreaming about lamborghini, porsche or ferrari and now electric tesla is on top of those dream cars.
I think that there has been few times that I got stuck for hours looking at the sky, but never got my mind into this direction. I was only thinking how huge is that and that I'd love to learn more about it.
I think that Mars project may be huge breakthrough. We don't know how things can change after this mission and it's beyond my imagination for now.

    1. For me it is unbelievable that most of people just accepted the fact that we live on the huge sphere "magically" moving in infinite space and aren't even curious what is out there and why we exist. Work, sleep, work, sleep. That's why I'm happy that we got people like Elon on this position. Let's just hope he is not an antagonist in this story ;).

  8. I am very impressed with the actions of Elon Musk. It is hard for me to believe that one person was able to do so many different things. Before reading this article, I had no idea that there was such a thing as the Starlink project, so it is difficult for me to judge if this is the right decision. It remains for me to believe that Elon knows what he is doing. I really like Tesla cars and I'm going to buy one when the infrastructure in Poland is better adapted to this. Watching the night sky in the city does not provide so much pleasure because there is a lot of light around, but when I am in the countryside I always look at the sky in the evening. It allows me to take a completely different perspective on life, realizing my fragility. The Mars project sounds like something unbelievable and I look forward to how it all goes.

  9. I love Tesla cars, so I like Elon Musk. Well he is kind of man that know what he is doing, so why not? I think sending so much satellites has good impact on technology and science. There won’t be NASA space monopoly maybe due to that move. When I look at the sky I think “ damn, how many stars”, that’s all. I heard that someone found water on Mars, in ice of course and yes, I’m excited. I hope one day we (people) will colonialize Mars and other planets.

  10. I don't know if it's a good move for Musk to send many satellites to orbit because I completely don't know about space-related issues, but I prefer to believe that the goal he wants to achieve is worth it. I saw the new Tesla Cybertruck and I'm a big fan of this project from the visual side - this's something completely new in the design of cars, I'm surprised by that.
Sometimes when I look at the sky I wonder where it all ends and what is the real scale of the world.
I am excited about the technologies that will be used in this mission, I expect many surprising design solutions. Man's expansiveness is also fascinating. I wonder where humanity will reach and how far corners will be discovered by people in the future.

  11. Oh boy! I think it's a very good move, especially because the materials are 95% destroyed in the atmosphere!

Certainly, these satellites will help the scientist to expand knowledge about space. I hope that next will be for sure covered with a kind a coating that reduces the amount of reflected light.
I don't think much about the Mars project, I am fascinates me life here on Earth.

I often look at the sky, it relax me and at the same time excites me I'm even feel it in my stomach. ( ͡◉ ͜ʖ ͡◉)

I have a lot of curiosity about space a bit like Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh who is extremely excited about space even nowadays. He is 98 years old. Crazy is it?!

I don't have Musk's favourite invention, but his idea of a child's name (X Æ A-12 Musk) is a bit disturbing to me, from the perspective of history, giving people numbers/codes to me.. Personally makes me confuse..

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't know if it's a good idea because I don't know it (technology/costs/risk). I think the goal is noble - the Internet is now a good that should be accessible to everyone. people coming from areas without internet access are often excluded.
I don't think I will be original, but Tesla. I really like researching what decisions a car should make. One of my favorites problems - the car has two people in front of it: an older one and a child. It can't stop. Who should it hit? Depending on the country, different answers were given - in Korea the most common answer was to hit a child, in European countries - that an elderly person. I don't know what the result was. But there is so many difficult questions, that someone had to answer.
Of course I do! But I like to know, so I was reading books about stars and an Universe, so i know what I'm looking at.
I'm not particularly excited. I am interested in how they want to solve problems, what ideas they have, but if I think about participation or get excited, then no.

  13. I am not an expert, but there are certainly many pros and cons of this project. The idea itself is great, but I wonder whether the cost and it is not only about money, it is not too high.
Personally, I have great sympathy for Tesla. I very much hope that this company will change the automotive world even more than it has done so far.
In general, I am not particularly fascinated by traveling to Mars and generally anything related to space. However, if someone is to make significant progress in this topic, it will definitely be Musk and I keep my fingers crossed for him.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Is this a good move? I have no idea, for sure it is a life changing project, but the time will show us either pros or cons of it.
One of Musk's newest project is neuralink. It would be too much to say this is my favourite but it is really interesting and I try to follow this topic.
Watching night sky for me is something really touching and special. There is so much beauty out there, but I think there is much more we do not see rather than things visible for us.

    ReplyDelete
  15. To be honest I don't know if it's that good move. I like the idea of omnipresent Internet on Earth but I know Elon and his men are mostly marketers so I have a lot of doubt in his projects. However, many of his ideas (for example Starlink) affect all of us so I think they are thoroughly verified by people much smarter than me or him.
To be honest I'm not even sure he "invented" anything. Ideas like electric cars, global satellite network or vacuum train are nothing new, it's just nobody was crazy enough to bet all their money on some sci-fi inventions, since most of the businessmen are pragmatic people. Out of his products I probably like Starlink the most due to scale of the investment but I'm concerned about potential side effects.
A lot. I believe Mars colonization idea is very interesting one and I hope it'll become success. I think we are slowly and steadily reaching overpopulation on Earth so colonizing another planets seems like very good idea to "fix" the problem.

  16. Do you think Elon Musk is making good move sending this much satellites into the orbit?

In my opinion sending this much satellites into the orbit are two sides of the same coin. The flip side is obviously cluttering the space and interrupting Astronomers' work.

What is your favourite Musk's invention?

My favourite invention of Elon Musk is definitely Tesla mark. The high-tech of these cars is impressive. Additional advantage is taht Tesla's car are electric. It has a good impact on environment. I hope that in the nearest future we could see more Teslas on a daily basis.

Do you sometimes look at the night sky and think "Damn, what is out there?" ?

I love admiring the night sky - especially during August, when we can observe "the stars rain".

Are you excited about Mars project?
I'm quite excited about Mars project, because in my opinion every space project is worth to try. We should explore universe, but people can't forget to do it with respect - the main aim is to explore, not to make a harm (like on Earth).

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's hard to say for me if it is a good idea, of course every plan to deliver Internet to everybody is a great move, but we must also think of scale of space garbage. My favourite invention of Elon Musk is Tesla cars which are a very different concept from current cars. I think everybody is thinking about one of the biggest mysteries for people, that is space. We think there are other species like us there that we can communicate with in the future. So of course I'm excited about Mars project. Maybe one day we would have family not only in other countries but also on other planets!

  18. The vast majority of Elon Musk projects are making great impression on me. Project „Starlink” is not an exception. It can offer great prospects for any fields in our life, science or business. But I think that this project have potential issues and pitfalls that is hard to foresee.

From the projects which you described “Fully automatic electric cars, "5th type of transport" called Hyperloop, Roofs that create power, Space rockets wich can land, and offcourse his plans for colonisation of Mars.” I didn`t expect anything from project “Hyperloop”, but other projects are fantastic for me.

I didn't see nothing, but I heard about it.

  19. Have you ever heard about Burning Man?

It's the first time that I heard about Burning Man. I think it is because for sure I'm not a sci-fi fan - when I hear the word 'festival' I rather think about music which I listen every day, not a fantasy world ;)

How do you like the idea of such a city in the real world?

It's a tough question for me. On the one hand it seems to be so interesting and exciting idea... but on the flip side, as I said before, I'm not interesting in sci-fi.

Would you like to visit Black Rock City?

I would like to visit this festival to try something different, but I'm not sure that I would enjoy it.
