Week 3 [16-22.11.20] Back in vintage fashion

                                    Back in vintage fashion

10 years ago, the 70's, 80's or 90's fashion was considered a great kitsch. Now it comes back

to us very intensively. 80’s was the craziest one, all the things that didn't fit in the previous

years were worn then. No wonder how the disco polo era reigned in those years. Disco style is

a pure madness! People in their outfits played with colors, materials and accessories such as:

sequins or glowing threads. I guess everyone remembers pants with extended legs and sewnin

frills. Sometimes they were also overalls. An important element that emphasized the crazy

look was the hair curled on the spring.

                                                                                                                                                    https://www.vintag.es/2018/12/80s-big-hair.html

At the end of the 70's a great frenzy for sportswear came. It was at that time that sports brands

such as Adidas, Nike or Reebook were prominent. It was popularized by MTV station, which

emitted hip-hop music, and sports street style was the rule in music videos. Until now,

sneakers are a cult project. Not only do young people wear them, but they have also appeared

in the closets of the older generation. Probably because the sports style is incredibly

comfortable, and in combination with some accessories it can look really elegant!

The 90's trend is also coming back. At that time, the trend look was changing very quickly

with new idols such as rebellious Nirvana, sweet Britney Spears or hip-hop slack TLC. But all

these styles had jeans in them. It is hard to imagine those days without jeans, even though

there were a lot of varieties. Pants were wide, narrow, with legs extended, ankles open, light

or dark, and so on. At that time the Levi's brand was very successful. You could say that Kurt

Cobain introduced a rebellious look to these pants. Loose, rolled up and torn on the thighs or

knees. In the past they used to be worn to show their rebellion, now these pants are made in

the factory and have entered the fashion world permanently.

Vintage fashion was created by the awareness of galloping consumerism. It will be one of the

main trends in the world of fashion. It has its own name "Trashion". It consists in reworking

old things, buying in second hands and using scraps left from production. The world is

sinking in garbage and burning throughout our lifestyle. We have to adapt our “fashion

attitude” to changing conditions.

Some people dig up old things as garbage and some consider them to be an incredible pearl.

Vintage clothes have not been so caught up in this way for a long time. A lot of vintage shops

are being created. Also, events with bazaars and exchanges under the slogan "vintage" are

very successful, where you can get things that are long out of use. Finding such gems gives a

lot more satisfaction than going to the network. The "vintage" tag has gained the title of

luxury.

If you are not interested in the subject of used clothing, I invite you to watch a movie about

consumerism.

  1. If we are talking about the fashion of the 70s - 90s, they can't be described in general terms. European fashion differed from states to a great extent! Europe as a whole was also diverse, and fashion was mainly dictated by social and economic changes. Certainly, more than once your older family members remembered the times when shoes and jeans were imported from abroad! 😅

There are a few vintage clothes in my wardrobe, although I don't really like this style. On a daily basis, I am a fan of wide-leg pants and I am very happy about their return to fashion because they're more easily available.

One of my favorite designers are Vivienne Westwood and Dilara Findikoglu. In their collections from previous years, you'll find many inspirations referring to the fashion and art of the 18th century. On the other hand, while browsing the collections of the Enfants Riches Déprimés fashion house, you will surely find a lot of references to the rebellious 70s and 80s and I also love them. 💙

I believe that there are no such things that should not come back. There are also no projects that come back unchanged. Currently, you can find many projects, not only in fashion, but also related to interior design, furniture or graphics, which are inspired by "dead" styles, and returning in a new version are fresh and inspiring. ✨

    1. Of course this cannot be generalised. However, I wanted to write down the styles that I associate with old movies, photos, etc. You are right, fashion is often inspired by old styles and combined with modernity created something wonderful and unique. As one professor said "let's not be afraid of inspiration". :D

  2. As I’m not a vintage person I’d have to look for vintage elements in my wife's wardrobe and I suppose that I’d find something there but for sure I wouldn’t know how to call those elements. I’m not a fashion person at all and my only approach when buying clothes is to look ‘good/ok’ and that’s enough. Nowadays I sometimes notice girls wearing bell-bottoms and for me, this is some kind of vintage throw-back. As for me, those girls are not attractive and I don’t like this style but it’s only my opinion.
I can’t think of any vintage clothing that would be inappropriate nowadays as in our times almost everything is globally accepted. I think that I’d find some example of nowadays clothing which would be not accepted some years ago but not in the opposite direction.

    1. Haha with the pants bells is that someone either loves or hates them.It seems to me that it depends on how the person will choose the rest of the outfit for them. I am also of the opinion that the clothes must be comfortable above all. :)

  3. I believe I can't find any vintage items in my wardrobe. I usually dress casual, sometimes wear streetwear, but I'm not a supporter of this fashion. However, I like women's outfits in such a taste, I find them very stylish and elegant, mostly due to the use of denim elements.
I'm no expert on the subject, but I suspect that torn pants and other pieces of clothing are part of a recurring trend? Recently, I also notice more and more often people wearing trousers with wide pant legs, which not so long ago was quite the opposite - the slimmer and tighter the better. Denim material has become perhaps more popular as well because I see it a lot in many outfits.
Personally, I hate the bell bottoms/flared pants the most, which I've already mentioned, I like clothes that are "closer to the body" or simply trousers with tapered legs. Another issue is the 80s hairstyles mentioned in the article, which I consider to be a total abstraction and I can't imagine people walking around with hairstyles like that these days.

    1. Women had to spend a lot of time to get this hairstyle 😂 I'm also surprised that this style was done every day. It's a total waste of time...

  4. Vintage is always in fashion as it brings in an old-world charm in the modern-day cluttered environment. Moreover, it is extremely easy to get the vintage look as it doesn't necessarily involve investing in high-end antiques and limited-edition items. I have a few pleather skirts, polka dot t-shirts, and also if I can add this to my wardrobe a few lipsticks of different shades of red.

My answer is patterned tights. Since the Mod look incorporated adolescent, flashy colors and prints, tights followed the same path. Sometimes this pairing would get overwhelming, especially when the hosiery had the same print as the rest of the outfit. At the time, it was seen as bold and on-trend, but now it just seems wonderfully nostalgic. Oh I could forget, also as patterned tights we should forgot about hammer pants. MC Hammer made Hammer pants wildly popular in the 1980s, and no one could get enough of the drop-crotch look. While the style has come back into fashion the last couple of years — albeit with a more tailored drop — it's still a relatively hard look to pull off, especially if you don't like your backside to look like it's drooping down to the backs of your knees.

  5. What vintage elements can you find in your wardrobe?

To be honest, the chance of finding any vintage clothes in my wardrobe is zero. My style of dress is very casual, t-shirts, hoodies, jeans and bomber jackets. I'am no expert if it comes to fashion for me vintage clothes looks rather silly.

What kind of vintage clothes from different era can you see in modern fashion?

One of the styles that I would see nowadays is the 70's, sportswear it's comfy and convenient.

Which part of vintage clothing shouldn’t come back in these time, and why?

When it comes to fashion, the vintage style may not come back at all, it is just very indifferent to me. When it comes to vintage style in general, I am a fan of cars and advertisements from that time, they are often very caricatured and interesting, for example, concepts of cars powered by nuclear energy.

    1. Oh yeah, I love old commercials. I could watch them for hours are so abstract! For those times they were totally cool and that's pretty funny.
And I also mainly like the sporting style. If I could get a suit from those times, I would walk in it every day! 🤩

  6. I have some vintage pieces from the times when I was able to spend hours on shopping in secondhands : D It was fun to find vintage clothes among the many rubbish. From that period, I have one zigzag-sweater, some flashy pretentious shirts and my favorite: aquamarine and pink nylon tracksuits! (Plus, gel hair and a carnival costume is ready!)
Now perhaps the best example of a return to vitage is Gucci. Have you seen their new Christmas campaign? Something like an "80s office holiday" - bitchin’!
And many mainstream brands like Pull & Bear try to do something neo-vintage by putting logos and pictures of Nintendo, Polaroid and Kodak on their T-shirts and sweatshirts. Result? 85827592 sweatshirts of the same cut and color with different logos.
What should never come back? What I hate a lot are the big collars on the shirts - even if the shirt had a nice pattern, it looks like a clown - never again!

    1. OMG I need to see these aquamarine and pink nylon tracksuits!
I haven't seen the new Gucci campaign, but I've just caught up. This is wonderful! I really like the recordings in this style. However, they could still "dirty" the shots a bit. There was also a slightly different style of recording then.
When it comes to logos, even the vintage filters on the instagram have Kodak logos everywhere and BANG the Kodak will make it more retro haha 😅

  7. 1. What vintage elements can you find in your wardrobe?
Oh, I don't think I have any vintage elements in my wardrobe, not because I don't like retro style, but because I don't bother with style and fashion at all. I never followed fashion or paid attention to what other people are wearing. I always take the clothes that I like, not depending on the brand, the store, I don't care what the label is on it and whose logo is drawn.

    2. What kind of vintage clothes from different era can you see in modern fashion?

    3. Which part of vintage clothing shouldn’t come back in these time, and why?
I can’t answer the next two questions as I wrote above, I don’t follow fashion and trends. I know one good saying: 'All new, it is well forgotten old' or 'History repeats itself'. And it's not just about fashion or clothing. And by the way, I once bought jeans in a second-hand store and a month later one of my friends noticed that these jeans of some cool brand and are not cheap in a brand store.

    1. The time when second hands were considered as something embarrassing is long gone. You can really find a lot of good clothes there, also congratulations on a successful unconscious hunt! 🥳

  8. Once I prowled in my grandparents’ attic and found some great pieces of clothing my grandfather used to wear when he was young. I grabbed some hoodies and sweatshirts of rare kind.
I'm not so much interested in fashion, but it seems to me that the time of tight clothes has passed and the fashion for wide pant legs and thick jackets is back.
I’m not a fan of crepe tracksuits from the 80's, so I guess I wouldn’t like that to be back in fashion.

    1. I really like the things I found at my grandparents. Some time ago I found analog cameras. My grandfather was surprised that something like that might interest me. Old watches are just as amazing!

  9. My approach to fashion is simple. I buy clothes I like, I buy clothes that make me feel comfy. I do not follow any styles or trends, to be honest I just do not enjoy buying clothes, this makes me tired. According to vintage fashion, I sometimes buy second hand clothes, I do not buy them to counter consumerism, I just think there are a lot of second hand clothes worth buying.
A few months ago, I was doing cleanup in my grandma's home. I had to scroll all the clothes and throw out those worn out or damaged ones. There were plenty of old and weird stuff, I do not even know how to call some of them. The one and only important thing is that none of them ended in my closet. :)

  10. 1. What vintage elements can you find in your wardrobe?
None, I'm just waiting my existing clothes will become vintage :)
I'm not into fashion anyway so really i don't know what to write more in this topic.

    2. What kind of vintage clothes from different era can you see in modern fashion?
I don't know. As I said I'm not into that kind of stuff :) I didn't notice any thing in past eras i would wear.

    3. Which part of vintage clothing shouldn’t come back in these time, and why?
Just tike i said above I don't recall anything that disgust me from past fashion.

  11. To be fair I can't find any vintage thing I actually wear. I do have some second-hand clothes but I don't use them in my casual, basic day routine. In general I think that this vintage trend can bring a little bit fun and excitment in life. I personally don't have time for "hunting" in secondhand shops, but some of my friends do and whenever they find something rare in nice price they're so happy because tey don't spend so much money and re-use old clothes. It is true that fashion repeats itself and sometimes it worth to not throw old clothes, even if they're weird. The trend that I see now is all kind of patchwork jeans - i still don't understand how they're considered good looking - and a lot of sportswear in casual situations. To be honest the only "trend" that I truly don't want to return is beliving in "one beauty standard" and shaming people for what they wear or how they look.

    1. I don't have much time for shopping hunting either. That is why I often use the things I already have. However, if I find the time to do so, I definitely do not go to a multiple store. "To be honest the only "trend" that I truly don't want to return is beliving in "one beauty standard" and shaming people for what they wear or how they look." <-- I like this approach ☺️

  12. In my wardrobe vintage clothes are mostly the sports ones. I don't really know why but I love old comfy sport style.
I don't really know much about it but i think you can see people wearing "old school" adidas clothes and stuff like "moms jeans" which I think were popular back than. I think that vintage style can be seen mostly on younger people around 16 to 20 years old.
Vintage clothing was very fun and I don't mind it coming back but if it comes to hair styles I hate those. It is the only thing that annoys me, all those tapered hair scares me. Also colorful leggins were terrible. :D

    1. I also love old-fashioned sports clothes. And this style from those years also appeals to me the most :D
I remember the big fashion for colorful leggings and short shorts... I had a few pairs of leggings myself! What a nightmare haha 😄

  13. I can’t call myself vintage lover, but of course no one can’t deny that this style comes back in nowadays fashion. I like to observe the new trends, and some them I even like, but I have no idea how to mixed them in real life.
I usually find the inspiration for my looks from people that surround me or bloggers. I can describe my style like casual mixed with sport, and for me vintage fashion is about comfort with a dash of self-impression. People have tried to find they own type of style and get out from routine, general cloth. It was era of identification, and in my opinion is what fashion about.
I can’t say anything bad about any type of cloth because it’s all about a sense of identity- so many people, so many minds, right? So why not?

    1. I agree! I really like how people have their own unique style. It is much more interesting on these grey streets, especially at this time of year :D How would the world look like if everyone was wearing the same clothes? Definitely too sad. 🙌🏼

  14. I was never really interested in vintage fashion, but if I have to choose, I pick watches, glasses, jackets maybe caps?
According to the second question, I think no one can really tell. Modern fashion is changing so quickly and in very different ways. It can be literally everything.
In my opinion fur coats, shouldn't be back in fashion. These ones were really popular back in the days, and it made more farms of wild animals appears. It's not necessary for us nowadays.

  15. 1. What vintage elements can you find in your wardrobe?
I don't have many vintage clothes in my warderobe... maybe a few dresses from my mother's youth :) but unfortunately I don't wear them often - they're mostly summer dresses. I rather buy and wear basic style clothes.
They make me feel comfortable and I think they are timeless.

    2. What kind of vintage clothes from different era can you see in modern fashion?
In today's fashion we can see a lot of elements from earlier years such as mom jeans that have been fashionable for many seasons before and a lot of accessories (for example: small leather bags with short handles or shoes with "ducky" heels).

    3. Which part of vintage clothing shouldn’t come back in these time, and why?
In my opinion flared trousers as well as hip-huggers should not return to fashion. In think these types of trousers have negative effect on the appearance of the figure (for ex. highlight sides).

  16. Vintage fashion is one of my favorite styles. I have plenty of vintage items in my wardrobe, I love high waist mom jeans from the 80s, oversized jumpers and trench coats. I'm a 90s kid so I love a variety of colors and patterns. Recently we also see a comeback of early 2000s fashion which in my opinion is even starnger and sometimes more exaggerated than 80s or 90s... maybe because it's not so long ago and I'm not yet nostalgic for this era, but I don't know, I guess I'm starting to be. Especially when I look back on what was wore by celebrities on red carpet back then looks so basic and ... not cool at all. There were so many strange elements of wardrobe like small bags, sleeves for tank tops double or even triple denims, shirts over long sleeves or my favorite : skirts over jeans. I assume it's not vintage anymore but it's certainly visible in second hand shops. I love the idea of not buying new staff and I'm obsessed with recycling and repairing my stuff. Most of my clothes are from second hands and Vinted.
I guess I'm not a fan of low waist pants and jeans as they fit only some type of bodies and lots of woman became fashion victims by wearing them back in 2000s so we can live without those type of pants:D

  17. 1. I have a lot of vintage clothes elements in my closet, for example blouses and t-shirts from my mom's from her college days through my grandmother's bags. Fashion is constantly coming back and it is wonderful! We don't have to look far :)

    2. All styles of dress intertwine with each other. Once it is fashionable for floral patterns, another time for uniform colors, another time narrow pants reign, and another time on the street we can meet people in extended pants. Hats for different occasions are also once there are, and once there are no hats. Currently I see the return of old-fashioned bags in our closets.

    3. I think that every kind of clothing should come back in time, it has many advantages :) Thanks to this we can save on our wallets and thus we care about the environment, because big brands and stores stop producing clothes on a large scale.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The thing with fashion is that it can often be seen as a cycle. You can easily observe the process of old trends coming back to life from time to time. I actually don’t think that I have any vintage clothes in my wardrobe but I am aware of the impact of 80s and 90s fashion trends being explored nowadays, for example the presence of denim clothes that are commonly worn in a rebellious way (this trend was started by Kurt Cobain as you’ve already mentioned). In my opinion fashion isn’t predictable. Some clothes that I would judge as kitschy can be seen as beautiful and fashionable in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Recently it seems to me that all my clothes are a bit vintage :)

When I was little, I always liked wide pants and cargo pants.

Pillows sewn into the arms of jackets. They always seemed funny to me. It makes people caricatured

    ReplyDelete
  20. Great article! I am confidant when it comes to fashion. I like to experiment and I must admit that I am not constant with things that I have in my wardrobe (I have rotation system, something is hide in boxes - something put out from boxes and I'm wear). I change my style very often, currently vintage is my thing, but definitely without the sequins and golden threads that you write about :)

    1. If you ask about vintage, I have a lot of things from my grandma and mom, such as belts, jewellery, handbags - they have a soul. Simple accessories allow you to enrich the styling.

    2. I was thinking about what could be observed in 2019 and I think leather coats were in the lead. There was a big boom for buy conscious clothes etc. so old handbags, backpacks, denim clothes and shoes were coming back then.

    3. I do not have such opinion. I think that everyone should wear what they like and feel comfortable. Just because I don't wear something or I don't like, doesn't mean that other people wouldn't wear it.
