You're either the best or the worst. People are with you or against you.

Black and white thinking

Those who think in black and white terms tend to view everything in an oversimplified, unambiguous way – there might be good and bad but there’s no room for so-so. They don’t do of things by halves. They’re either passionate, giving it their all, or not being bothered, because deep down, they feel, to put it bluntly, a task is a waste of time and energy. They prefer to save their efforts for what matters, what they think is achievable and will have positive effects. The rest isn’t worth a second glance. Of course, pre-selecting tasks to avoid ambiguous and uncertain goals can be a useful thought pattern, but it may also lead to opportunities being dismissed too quickly.Should we ignore risky options or is it wise to focus on those with more potencial? After all a person might have an ability to simplify reality, perceptions and experiences, but life is more complex. It can’t be broken down into neat categories because it’s not black and white. It’s full of shades of grey.

Disorted reality

Thinking in absolutes and using polarizing words can be emotionally damaging, as a person might go from being great one minute to their life ‘being ruined’ the next. Black and white thinking, also called dichotomous thinking or splitting, can even turn into a mental trap: having only two options limits a person’s range of actions while at the same time intensifying thoughts and feelings. In the long-run, it can affect appreciation for life, so try to reframe such thinking by breaking the habit and bringing back the centre-ground and balance. Let’s say, for instance-that you’ve just turned 40, and a colleague or friend has commented that you’re now “old”. That doesn’t necessarily make them a bad person, but possibly an insensitive one (and definitely inaccurate).A French-Cuban American diarist Anaïs Nin

said: “ We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are” because reality is what you make of it after all.

Power of perception

Each person possesses a unique set of filters through which they see the world. This perception defines the {subjective) reality and forms the foundation of a person’s world. Your perception of today is influenced by your memories, values, beliefs and environment. It’s a filtering system that helps the conscious mind process the mountain of information with which it is confronted. The brain actually sees far more than what it allows people to register, largely using self-constructed filters to limit the constant barrage of information. But if these filters are constructed to select some elements while ignoring others, they can also distort the overall view. After all parameters change and filters may need recalibrating for an optimal and balanced field of vision. If you change the structure of your perception, you also change the structure of your world. These pointers may help to make those perceptual changes:

·      Try excluding absolute words from your vocabulary

·      Limit time with people for whom there are only extremes

·      Think beyond the narrow constructs of success and failure

·      Give short shrift to your negative internal voice

Also, remember that you hold the power to transform the world from black and white into glorious colours.

QUESTIONS:

1)  Should we ignore risky options or is it wise to focus on those with more potencial?

2)    How do you perceive the world? Can you see everything clearly - the challenges as well as the opportunities - or is there only what you want to see?

3)    In other words, is your vision broad and all-encompassing or restrictive and one-sided?

  1. I think that often making risky decisions can lead us to success or positive change. I try to coldly analyze the situation I'm in and the possibilities of solving problems, which is difficult for me, because I often act very impulsively. I believe that in everyday life it's very important to try to react more to positive situations than to bad ones, although people tend to focus on the negatives and exaggerate them. Sometimes the easiest and most effective method is to talk to another person and see your own situation from the side.

    1. If you are very impulsive, are the decisions you make right or wrong? Did you analyze it in some way? You seem to be optimistic. :)

  2. I think that avoiding risky options is usually better, but ignoring them all your life at every possible moment is of no use to you. An example of this is the challenges at work. Personally, I'm very shy, I don't like when someone offers me to participate in a presentation or training. However, if I always refused such offers (while remaining in my comfort zone), I'd never move and there would be no question of a promotion or a raise. Each challenge is always worth considering, even those with little potential.
My perception of the world is a bit complicated, mainly because I am pessimistic and usually focus only on the worst things. It's hard for me to see opportunities, because in my opinion, opportunity = challenge, I always have to put a lot of effort into a task that can later bring benefits to me, and despite everything, I'm not always able to see these benefits.

    1. The challenges must be taken in order to be able to develop challenges are also a risk that must be taken into account. The big challenges the big risks - no risk no fun and what do you think?

  3. There are many ways to respond to risky situations. One of them is avoiding them completely, which isn't always the best option to choose. We also have more optimistic and smart attitude - taking it into consideration, properly manageing and calculating: the consequences, the possibility of this consequences happening and the overall impact for us. With this information we can choose if we want to invest into risky option. We tend to categorize risk as something bad, but in reality, this risky moments can lead to our success. In my opinion, we should focus more on what we can gain with risk, and how we can minimize the possible negative consequences.
I used to be very pessimistic, but now I find stressful/risky situations as growth potential. My perception of the word can be harsh, but sometimes we win and sometimes we learn. The lesson could, and often is, painful, but in the end it changes us, for better. I tend to analyze everything, seeing the pros and cons, and sometimes try to predict the outcome. It's best to keep options open and be fully aware of the decisions we make.

    1. Risk analysis always helps and certainly gives the opportunity to prevent risks from materializing. The risked challenges after reaching them give greater satisfaction or is it not so?

  4. I believe that making risky decisions somehow accelerates your success. Risk carries the chance of success. The smaller the chances are, the more spectacular the success can be. I always try to think carefully about the situation. Analyze all the pros and cons and only then make a decision. Of course, there is not always enough time to make a decision and sometimes you have to be impulsive. Then the situation becomes complicated ... What is the best way to make a decision in such a situation?

    1. I always believe in my intuition and it always works fine. But sometimes better is ask someone else about opinion, maybe someone who know you the best will give you the best advice. :)

  5. As of risky options it is hard to say what to do, it is hard to say what is risky for me? Is a spicy kebab a risky option? Or maybe gambling? For me, the key to success it to know how to rate the level of risk properly.
How do I perceive the world? Basically, I try to see all the pros and cons and analyse them.

  6. In my opinion it’s hard to succeed if you play safe. Life is full of risks and challenges and if you just ignore risky options you will never have a chance to live it up. People perceive things differently. We choose to select different aspects of a message to focus our attention based on what interests us, what is familiar to us, or what we consider important. I usually try to see things not just from one point of view and think deeper, but once again - who knows, maybe it’s just my perspective only from MY OWN different sides 🙂

  7. In my opinion you can’t perceive the world as neither black or white. Most dilemmas are far more complicated to categorize them as being “good” or “bad”. I think that people who reduce the problems to binary form tend to be much less open minded. To answer your first question I would say I choose much more often to take the risk. If we always decided to stay in our comfort zone, we wouldn’t be able to experience many various things, that could change our lives for the better. I always try to look at the world from different perspectives but I don’t think anyone can say that they see everything clearly. It’s not always possible to stay objective all the time.

  8. I think that taking a risk sometimes is a good thing, either way you win or you loose, and if you win it would be easier next time.
I can't say that i see everything clearly it depends on a situation, if everyone would see everything that way the life would be too easy.
In everything I am not one-sided, I like to see more opportunities and more options to choose, that is why for me it is hard to decide sometimes.

  9. 1. Should we ignore risky options or is it wise to focus on those with more potencial?
It's depend. I think in some point we all judge from the first impression but we need to have in mind obvious patterns to not harm for example religious, race basis.

    2. How do you perceive the world? Can you see everything clearly - the challenges as well as the opportunities - or is there only what you want to see?
I'm not really shure that understood your point. If I'm wrong please correct me. I think world have many colours and we should have it in mind always so for example I believe that people are good deep in theirs heart. Also try to remember to do not judg - first get known!

    3. In other words, is your vision broad and all-encompassing or restrictive and one-sided?
I'm rather openminded for everything and everybody. Not having a problem with sex or orientation.

  10. It’s more reasonable to be focused on options with more potential, however it’s good to take risks sometimes.
My perception of the world is rather clear. I try to take every opportunity and see all the challenges around. I think it’s important to broaden your horizon’s in any possible way.
I have to say that my vision is rather broad and all-encompassing rather than restrictive.

  11. 1 The best way to improve yourself is to put yourself in “dangerous” situations or in at least uncomfortable one. If you’re always in your comfort zone, how can you learn new things.

2 I feel that its still changing, when i was younger i think that my “vision” was closer to the last one. After i grow up a little bit i talk to myself about maybe changing how i perceive the world. Right now i hope that the “vision” is a little bit bigger. Of course i’m never gonna be sure if the world i see is the world that everybody see but in fact who actually know how the world really look like.

3 I really hope that my vision is broad but you’ll never know without talking about life, world etc with different people. The only way to see the “whole world” is to look at this with everybody's eyes.

  12. It’s hard to answer to the first question. I think it always depends on a situation and how big the risk is. From my experience it’s with to take risks when it comes to bigger picture and life decisions but in daily situations it’s better to make decisions based on safe predictions.
I wish I have clear vision and I could say that things are simple and as I see them but for me very often is hard to make decisions based on my perception because I know that the picture is broader and most of the time I’m not convinced to any side of the problem. I guess it’s very rare to discover one universal truth and follow it’s directives. Life of complicated and there are many aspects of each event and moreover it can be presented in certain way so in my case it’s almost never black and white. I wish it could be like that maybe it would be easier to make good decisions if I have sting believes what I do is right.

  13. 1. In my opinion we have to be prudent in our life. It doesn't mean we cannot risk in life because risk is part of life we have to minimize that

    2. I want to set goals for yourself in every period of life. I must have objective to trend. Ofcourse not all paths all clear but I know where I'm going

    3. In other word, I know where I want to be in my life but sometimes I must risk because the path to my goal is not clear

  14. 1. In my opinion there are no bad decisions in our lifes. Even the most risky ones are part of our lives. It is up to us which way we choose, whether we will take the risk or stay on the sidelines.

    2. Not all my decisions in life were easy. Sometimes I take risks in the belief that it will have a positive impact on my future. I am a person who willingly takes challenges and is not afraid to take risks.

    3. My vision of life is definitely broad and overwhelming :) As I mentioned above, I am not a person who sees only positive and negative aspects in my decisions. I try to choose wisely, but also sensibly. Sometimes the consequences are different :)
