Week 2 [26.10-02.11.2015] HYPERLOOP

Have you ever imagined an overland journey from town to town with the speed of over 1000 km/h?

It sounds crazy, when you think about it, but it can happen soon! All of this thanks to an eccentric billionaire and a visionary Elon Musk.

The owner of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, one of the most influential people in the twenty-first century reveals plans to create the  Hyperloop system,  the fifth means of transport, that will allow the transport of passengers at the speed of over 1200 km/h.

The system will use small gondolas with solar panels  traveling inside. These gondolas will move on "cushions" created by the air blown out of them. Vehicles are expected to run every 2 minutes and allow the transport of passengers and even vehicles.

Below you will find Musk’s  hyperloop sketches:

The Hyperloop is different from similar projects as it requires no digging of long tunnels or vacuum. It seems that everything can be made using the  existing technology.

A few months ago JumpStartFund , a crowd-powered online incubator, created Hyperloop Transportation Technology  Inc.,  which brought together engineers willing to spend their free time working on design in exchange for stock options.

HTT plans to start the construction of a test section on a full-scale, ready to transport passengers in 2016. They also announced that the project has 400 “team members”. They aren’t employees, but women and men working for, e.g.  NASA, Boeing, and SpaceX, who spend their time working
on the Hyperloop in exchange for stock options. They’ve also got several potential investors.

We can only look forward to using it.

  1. It is amazing that we will be able to travel at the speed of over 1200km/h as a means of mass communication. It means that we exceed the sound barrier (1224km/h).

I am afraid people will put up badly with the g-force, because in order to gain over 1200km/h by Hyperloop's gondolas, they must have a high initial speed (more than a plane). A violent acceleration is very dangerous for people. Increase of blood pressure hightens the likelihood of a hemorrhage to the brain or to the eyeballs threatening partial or permanent impairment of vision. This technology which is Hyperloop is great but does it considers health and safety of people?

    1. Karolina, thanks for your comment.
I hope that all these questions will be answered by professionals who participate in the implementation of this project in life. According to the assumptions, overloadings, to which passengers would be undergo will not exceed those familiar with conventional trains. I think this is the biggest challenge for the constructors because in terms of human health and life.

  2. Absolutely interesting topic! When it will come true it might become one of the safest means of transport, moving at the same or higher speed than passenger planes! It really makes me proud that there are some people in the world who spend their lives over creating such things as Hyperloop and their only goal is to equip humanity with useful tools for saving their time for higher purposes (traveling sometimes is a waste of time, especially if it comes to business trips)

  3. Yesterday I was traveling by train and as always it was late. Sometimes it is 20 minutes, more often is 40, so any kind of improvement, which wouldn’t be very expensive, would be great. I only hope it wouldn’t be anything like this:

    http://southpark.cc.com/clips/153064/its-better-than-flying

@Karolina is concerned by health issues, but I think that if we managed to solve this issue with flying – I think that we can find solution for these gondolas as well. This is the melody of the future, but I’m sure that developed technologies can be reused in many other parts of our live.

I also think, just as @Magda, that this presentation have, a very interesting topic, but it wasn’t developed enough – it’s a bit too short for me. I get that it should be about quality, not length, but only 267 words? Come one! Maybe something more about other new ways of travel? I would also pay more attention to formatting:

“The Hyperloop is different from similar projects as it requires no digging of long tunnels or vacuum. It seems that everything can be made using the existing technology.”

You copied text with original formatting, so it used two fonts. Then you started new paragraph with another font.
And remember that coma is always right after the word, you do not put space before it.

  4. It is amazing how technology has evolved over 25 years. Do you remember those big a cell phone without a color screen ? Life without permanent connection to the Internet? A journey by plane it was something unusual ? It was still more or less like we were little kids.
If Hyperloop come into our lives , it will be the next big breakthrough in our lives. Long voyages will cease to be a barrier . This is exciting!
If it is possible to drive the speed of over 1000 km / h , it may someday be possible teleportation ?

    1. Yes I do remember these times and one of a kind nokia 3310. It's amazing how fast the world changing around us. Exactly. It's possible to drive with the speed I can't even imagine so what is next ? How many more amazing things can invent the human.

  5. I’m not overly exited about this article just like my colleagues. Yesterday I was travelling by train and today I’m a little bit ill because heating didn’t work and the windows were leaky so it was pretty cold inside. That’s the reality we are living now so we will probably be long gone before this huge concept becomes real in our country. But it’s still nice to hear that some of future conceptions which we could see only in the fantasy movies are now slowly being realized. I wonder that comes next. I can’t wait to see this project with my own eyes:

    1. I understand you perfectly. My fiancee drove home by train.
Probably you are right. It's a big investment. But good to know that there is such a possibility. What can be next ? Who knows. Sylwia Jabłonka think that cen be teleportation. This can be fun.
I hope you get well soon.

  6. I have to appreciate the visionary. However I have some questions:
    - If the capsule move on behind the other, it would be very dangerous, because when the one capsule stops, the next capsule can collide to it with very high speed. It will pose a risk of serious accidents. Unless that all of the capsule will inhibit automatically. But in this situation would be a huge loss and confusion because the whole line will be stoped.
Another thing - how to evacuate passengers in case of severe failure? Depressurize whole infrastructure? Maintaining the vacuum and guarding it in such infrastructure is a very difficult issue, particularly in areas vulnerable to earthquakes. Will there be crossovers allowing directing capsules of inactive track to spare? There is still a lot of other constraints to solve. I'm not a grumbler- just the opposite - I am glad that there are people who want to develop the world using technology, but these questions suggest themselves...
I suspect that in the past people skeptical thought about traveling by plane. But the airplanes have the advantage that they use air corridors and they are not stiff pinned to these corridors. In the case of failure they may deviate, do circles, dump fuel and land to spare, nearest airport.
Let's wait for the first tests and we will see and know more than today.

    1. Klaudia Thanks for the comment.
Your concerns have been provided by the builders, who assumed that the distance between capsules have to be not less than 32 km which will allow to safely decelerate when the first capsule is broken.
Definitelly it is to early to specullate, we have to wait:)

  7. Very interesting article, nowadays, technology plays important role in our life. We are using airplanes, trains, cars or ships to change our location, but it also takes much time. Airplanes are now the fastest way to travel a long distance in the shortest time, but the main disadvantage is very long time which takes the briefing, and getting to the airport. I think Hyperloop will help us to travel the long distance in short time but also with the shortest waiting time. I read some information about Hyperloop at the internet and I find out that this gondolas will be moving on poles similar to ancient aqueducts like we seen in the movie. Each capsule could take about 28 people, which will travel in a lying position. I think this is a very comfortable and safe position to travel long distance with speed increasing 1200km/h. I wonder if human body withstand that speed, and how the scientist will solve the overload case? We can only wait for the time when engineers build the first Hyperloop train. It will be the time of travelling revolution which I'm looking forward.

    1. Thank you for your comment.
Regarding your concerns about congestion at the speed I would like to remind you of the Concorde airplanes. They were passenger planes, where the maximum speed was 2 179 km / h !!
It might not be the best example because they have been withdrawn from service after several disasters, but it shows how strong is the human body with the help of technology.

  8. It looks fantastic! It would be great to travel so fast. There are just some things, that bothers me. Would that be safe if it was available for public? Wouldn't it be to much risky to have so many fast vehicles and reckless people in crowded space? It would be necessary to change way of thinking about transport and responsibility.

    1. Valuable comments. People constructing any new means of transport, needs the assumptions which minimize the risk of catastrophe. I think that before the Hyperloop project starts functioning as public transport, it will be many years and many tests will be carried out.

  9. Nice topic, I have no idea about Hyperloop system! 1200 km/h speed is unbelieveble for me to imagine. Theoretically it means I will be able to travel to my dad's place in less than hour! My father lives near to french border in Germany. Last time when I visited him I travelled by bus.I have been spent about 18 hours inside.. Honestly, trips like this simply cannot be comfortable. If Hyperloop project will be realized and implemented I guess it will give a new quality of live for people, especially those who travel a lot.

  10. Hello everyone,
This topic is very exciting especially for those who love traveling.
Nowadays pace of life is very fast and everyone cares about time.
I think that solution presented in this article is great, modern and can provide very convenience way for travelers.
I have also some remarks with reference to number of people which capsule can contain and safety. It can take only 28 persons - this is not a big number and I think that it could take much more. Looking on safety side it is interesting what could happened when there is accident. Like @Klaudia Telak said I am interested about organizing the whole traffic when one capsule is damaged.
On one hand this solution is very helpful for me. On the other I think that there should be many scenarios tested before it is released especially those connected with passengers safety.

  11. It's pretty neat idea! I'm happy to know that people are still creating new ways of travel even though we already have so many.
But 1200 km/h is quite a lot. I wonder how are they going to handle the load factor and other potential problems. I also hope that this idea is not going to be denied by leading transportation companies or any other discouraging institutions.

  12. This is really amazing news. Imagine, how fast we can get from Gdańsk to Zakopane! It will take just a moment!
But... It is really sad, because probably we will don't see things like this one in our country...
Just look for a trains. Actually almost whole nation are extremely proud of Pendolino with maximum speed 200km/h (as we can read at https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolej_dużych_prędkości_w_Polsce only at fragments of line 9 (whole line have about 300km)). And at the same time in Japan they are planning to run in 2027 really super speed trains (maxmium speed 603km/h - more than three times than our Pendolino!
Of course it reached that speed on the test-track, but after all, it still does a remarkable impression) in regular connection between Tokyo and Nagoya: http://swiat.newsweek.pl/rekord-predkosci-pociagu-603-km-h,artykuly,361496,1.html

So summaring, Hyperloop is fantastic novelty, but for people living in Poland it's only a holiday attraction :)

  13. Wow! That’s really something!:D I know it may not sound like the smartest reaction ever, but I sometimes find it hard to believe how quickly does the stuff we know from sci-fi movies turn into real-life projects. I’m also keeping my fingers crossed for the positive outcome of the tests they are to conduct in 2016. I can already think of so many ways in which it would change our lives! Just picture telling your friend from e.g. Sweden you’ll step in for a sec. in less than an hour just to talk about that crazy stuff that happened on the last party and grab a beer :D

  14. It is really interesting topic. I haven't heard about Hyperloop, but this sounds really amazing. I’ve started to search additional information about that project on internet, because I couldn't believe it is true… And it looks, like it is! This is real future, like in sci-fi movies.
I read, that US government accepted fast train connection between Los Angeles and San Francisco with 350Km/h train speed. Mr. Musk was disappointed with that - why so slow and expensive (60 billion $) he thought. According to this plans, he invented Hyperloop which will cost 10x less.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed for this project. It would be nice to try this on my own skin in the future :)

  15. Everything sounds great, but looking at the realities of Polish I wish I could ride trains at a speed of 300+ km / h. So far we have Pendolino which were very expensive and so far operate only question is how long.
I hope that these people will succeed. Looking over the past year as rapidly is changing technology I'm a big fan of what the next 10 years will bring. Looking at it that in Japan we have a very high-speed trains I believe that people are able to reach the level of speed 1000km / h.
