Week 7 [18.01-24.01.16]: How to make a video clip

It's hard to imagine today's audiovisual culture without … video clips!
Clips which were created to promote a songs became a kind of art in itself.
Are you curious how they are made and who creates it?
Is it hard work? The question is how to show a fascinating history in a few minutes..,
and how to join music and pictures in a coherent way?
Let me present you a backstage of video clips.

Let's start from the very beginning – the first video clip in the world.

This one was made by a British group, the Queen, in 1975 to promote the Bohemian Rhapsody song. Shoots took about 4 hours, and cost 4.500 pounds, nowadays rather a low-budget production.
It is important to notice that adding pictures to a song created completely new possibilities for an artists: they could augment their recorded tracks visually with photos, videos, graphics
and movement.
We can also find a very first try of using a special effects in the video clip. That's a multiplication of a head of Freddy Mercury, which you can see below. Enriched songs built new quality in the audiovisual industry.
After the success of "Bohemian Rhapsody" recording videos for songs has become a regular practice.
You can watch this extremely famous and classy clip here:

So, it is time to go backstage!
.Here is Beyoncé’s video to the “Sweet dreams” song.
http://www.ergonomicchairreviews.info
.I highly recommend watching this material.

Let's focus on technical details and crew which work on it.
There are many people involved in creating a move clip and each person has an important role.

There is a director, who creates a script and makes an artistic concept of a clip. He also inspires and manages the people.
Make-up and fashion stylist take care of a vocalist's looks.
We cannot forget about a choreographer and dancers.
They often support a vocalist and make good background for him just like in Beyoncé’s clip.
Finally, a video set needs cameramen, and editors.  A producer keeps an eye on the whole production. All of those people have to cooperate to make a strong team.

The next issue are special effects and sort of technical details.
Have you ever wondered how some breathtaking movie scenes were made?

http://digitalsynopsis.com/design/movies-before-after-green-screen-cgi/

Please take a look at the picture above. A real “green screen” background was replaced by a created one.
It is a popular technique in movie clips. The Green screen allows to put a vocalist in a completely new, fantastic or wild world and gives a lot of opportunities for a director too.
The green colour lets easily separate a background from the rest.

Let's check another examples.
All is full of love” was created in 1998 by an Islandic artist, Bjork.
In Bjork's clip were used a real robot model and also 3d models, which were animated.

The editors team placed Bjork's face on a robot's head.
Looks like a lot of work, doesn’t it? Creating a 3d model, synchronizing it with the recorded material and also with music should be very arduous work...
The video clip has won plenty of awards, especially MTV Video Music Awards in the best film category, and the best special effects.

  4. I’m quite confused, because you started with music video-clips and then moved to CGI effects in movies…. And those are two separate topics for me. Also “Bohemian Rhapsody” wasn’t the first music video clip in the world. There were many before that (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_video), but for sure it’s very, very famous.
The topic of this article is unclear to me, so I’ll move directly to answering your questions:
    1) Which is your favourite movie clip ?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIYnCOX_W_E

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmSgv9A_ZqM (Do I need to explain why? :D)

But to be serious I enjoy music movie clips with references to art and movies such as:

    2) Have you ever been at a movie clip set or worked as a movie extra ?
No, I never had an opportunity.
    3) Which member of the crew would you like to be?
Easy choice – the director :)

    1. Thank you for your opinion Jakub, but I'd like to note, that the same CGI effects like green screen can be used in video-clips and movies as well..:) but if it is too confusing for you, you should watch Beyoncé's video again and pay attention to a background.

Bohemian Rhapsody was a first video clip in the modern sense. I agree I didn't noted that information , but
I focused directly on contemporary examples.
      Here is a source.

thans for very various video clips examples, I prefer the second part :D

  5. I've expected a little bit of more explanation on how movies are being made, whereas I've found some general information which were quite interesting but very general. My favorite movie clips are those of Tool that are mainly created by Alex Grey. My another cool animated movie is this one of Landreth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbkBjZKBLHQ

Have you ever been at a movie clip set or worked as a movie extra ?
Once I had the opportunity. It was not a music video clip, but short spot promoting the campaign "Girls go Sience!". I remember that I was very nervous and I behaved unnaturally and I was embarrassed in front of the camera, but the team working on the recording was amazing and helped me to endure to the end.

Which member of the crew would you like to be?
    Director, of course :)

  7. 1) Which is your favourite movie clip ?

I am a big fan of Jennifer Lopez and I enjoy the most clips that star her. I truly love to watch her dance. One of my favourite clips is Love Don't Cost A Thing and ex aequo Get Right. Thesee are the links to these clips:

    2) Have you ever been at a movie clip set or worked as a movie extra ?

Unfortunately I've never been a movie extra and all the more I've never worked at a movie clip set. However I worked as a dancer on the Top of the Top Festival in Sopot in 2012. I took part in the ehearsals and I got to know what happens behind the scenes. It was a very interesting experience.

    3) Which member of the crew would you like to be?

It is a good question. Obviously I would like to be a main star! I always dreamt about being a singer or a pop star. Unfortunately I don't have a strong voice. I think that I couldn't be a member of the crew because I would be too jealous of the main star and I would wish that I was in her place.

    1. Karolina, I think should be a dance star! Maybe you will reach a fame by your moves, not a voice :) You have your hero in Jennifer, an experience on a scene.. Let's conquer the world :))

For me there can be only one answer - "Thriller" Michael Jackson's. Do I need to say something? Just sit back, relax and enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOnqjkJTMaA&hd=1

    2) Have you ever been at a movie clip set or worked as a movie extra ?
Unfortunately no. I didn't have occasion for that.

    3) Which member of the crew would you like to be?
I never thought about that... Hmm, I will choose a director role. Who knows, maybe somehow I will been able to create something interesting.

  9. I think Bohemian Rhapsody was not the first video per se - what I mean is that what's important was the marketing role of the video for this song, how the marketing strategy has been centrilized around the music video as a piece directly 'advertizing' the song.

Music videos arose with the raise of music televisions. For me they were THE BIG THING in the nineties ;)

What I find interesting, is a pretty early approach for promoting pop bands through Audio-Video, like the Beatles (A Hard day's night, Help, etc.) and similar or, later on, some of the rock-operas/musicals (Hair, Grease, Tommy, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Rock Horror picture show, etc.)

    1. Ania, I take your point about Bohemian Rhapsody.
Just as Jakub said, there was some earlier videos, but Queen's video really changed a music world.
I recommend to read an article below If you are intrested in music video history :)

  10. Very interesting article, because now movies and songs surrounds us in our daily life. When we are watching TV we see many commercials which were also directed and made by a group of people. Also this commercials are mainly made on Green screes so it involves people who makes post-production on it. You said about video clips and movies, but I think that commercials are made in the same way as video clips. When a company wants to promote and sell the product, they are making commercial movie clip.
Since when TV is also mass media, just like the radio on the beginning, people are not only listening the songs, but they can also watch theirs video clips, so movie clips are the way for artists to express themselves. Now people during listening the songs, judge them not only by what they hear, the way this songs sounds, but also by the way how it looks like on YouTube or TV.

    1. Which is you favorite movie clip

I think that I have many favorite movie clips, but mainly I prefer to listen to music, for example on Spotify, than to watch it’s movie clips, because it takes time and you can’t do something else.
I think that now I don’t know which movie clip is my favorite, it is hard to decide, but I paste this clips because I think they are weird and stupid :D

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xat1GVnl8-k

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQHPYelqr0E

I will also paste this Suicide Squad Trailer with Bohemian Rhapsody song in it, because for me it is the best trailer I have ever watched. Enjoy.

    2. Have you ever been at a movie clip set or worked as a movie extra ?

No, I have never been at a movie clip set.

    3. Which member of the crew would you like to be?

I think that when I will have the opportunity to be a part of a movie clip team, I would like to work in a post-production team. I would like to learn how to use this programs. I think that this team gives the final character and expression to a move and decides how it will be seen by people.

  11. It's a very interesting article :) I don't know that the first video was recorded by the Queen ...
It's true that artists through video can show more, and you can see exactly what the artist had in mind.
Unfortunately, in my opinion, most of today's music video is of poor quality (when it comes to the author's message).
There is no artistry - there is plenty of nudity, a lot of hidden advertising -
and the recipient is a multitude of people to whom the "artist" can earn.
It's sad, but bands like Queen is gone... :/

    1. Favourite music video:
I don't have a favorite video, but I have a few that I really like:

    A. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXv31OmnKqQ (Rammstein - "Mein Herz brennt")
    B. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rr8ljRgcJNM (Rammstein - "America")
    C. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8KQmps-Sog (Muse - "Uprising")

    And Polish accent :)
    D. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQ9ORnAWqfw (Sistars - "Sutra")

This videos doesn't have excessive special effects but certainly clearly shows what the authors had in minds :)
If I must necessarily choose my favorite video - it would be B (Rammstein - "America").
Moon scenery hits the spot when it comes to lyrics, even the band makes an impression as if gravity was weaker there... hahah

    2. Heh, unfortunatly not, but I would like very much - in elementary school I played in the performances, maybe I could also in the music video at now :)
    3. Of course the actor! Each video you can have a different face, a different character, a different culture and personality - that is fascinating to me :)

  15. Green screens are widely used in cinematography - music videos as well, but comparing them is a little apples and oranges. To answer your questions:

    1) Which is your favourite movie clip ?
My favourite video clip is Rammstein's Du Hast - it's like a mini movie, with plot suspense, "cool guys don't look at explosions" trope and plot twist
