As some of you might already know, in this year World Youth Day event will be held in Kraków ( from 25th to 31st July) by Poland, for the second time in the history.
Let’s have a little look into it:
World Youth Day is a recurring international meeting of youth, founded by St. John Paul II in 1984. Since that time it became more and more popular to get it current status, biggest religious event of youths from all over the world. Young people gather together with their catechists in order to profess and strengthen faith in Jesus Christ.
Last time WYD event occured in Poland in 1991 in Czestochowa. Every event has it's own anthem and theme. It's one of the biggest recurring events in the world which is held every 3 years, in different locations around the world. From some independent estimations it looks that there will be approximatelly 2 millions of people gathered in Kraków.
if you think that 2 millions is a record, you're not correct!, current frequency record belongs to Brazil WYD event, which occured in 2013, and it held around 5 millions of pilgrims, below some photos, to show you how big it was.
I don't wanted to focus on religious aspect of this event, as I thought you can easily read about that on official webpage if you would like to. I just wanted to give a short notice about it.
With such events there are also some controversy, as most of the costs are covered by country in which event is organized, it's a very common practice, ( like with Euro 2012, VolleyBall championship etc). It's a big chance for organizing countries to open for tourists, and show from a good side, but it's also a big challenge, due to international status and risk of organizational failures.

On the other hand It wouldn’t be possible to host such big amount of pelgrims without help of volounteers, so if you would like to participate in this big event, you can easily register on WYD webpage and contribute.

NATO SUMMIT 2016
Almost at the same time, from 8th to 9th July, first time in the history, we will host NATO summit in our capital city. It's a very big international meeting at which Head of States and Head of Government of all NATO members meet and discuss in which direction alliance will go, furthermore, major decisions are made.
Some of the people are saying that location is a very big advantage for eastern europe as according to current political situation, eastern-european NATO countries could force alliance to move nearest military base's from Germany to Poland or even closer to Russian borders.

ReplyDeleteI think that is good idea but very risk. In Europe We have problem with immigrants. In Poland maybe we don't feel danger but if many people will be arrive to our country it is very big propably that in this people will be people whose want do it something very bad, but I think Poland is one of a few country in Europe where will be safety. I tell it context World Youth Day. This event was for our country very big privilege and promotion. But Nato Summit I think will be very calm, because in this day on our road will be more policeman or army than another days.
2. Are you okay with paying for such events from your taxes ? What's your opinion about that ?
I would prefer that my taxes will go on for example road or new buses but in budget will be designed money for colture and we can't move this money for another destiny.

How I write in first point will be risk but a Poland will be one of few coutry where is reletively safe, because our new goverment fight about our independence.
4. What’s your opionion about volounterring ?
It is good things. You can spent great time and show another people worldwide, that we can do something big and do it great.
I can see that we have very similar point of view about first question, but I don't think that this problem will be related to imigrants, as Poland is not a good direction for them and they choose our country rarely.

ReplyDeleteNATO summit will not be a mass event. It will be rather calm event. Very important, but calm. But certainly very demanding for the organizers, especially when it comes to safety.
But when it comes to WYD I think it will be a great event for Poland. Krakow has never hosted such event. I think that people who come to this event, they will also want to visit some polish places, so this is a great opportunity to promote our country.

I think that only the Church should pay for this event. And on this I stop this subject, because I do not want to go into politics :)

In Poland yes, Poland is a safe country. But, for example France is vulnerable to terrorist attacks. Therefore, I'm following Euro from TV.

It is a very good thing. We can get to know a lot of people from around the world and help them.
Regarding first question, thank you for pointing me that as I generalized it too much, you're absolutelly right, NATO summit is not a mass event :)

I don't really like that kind of events, I mean mass events, when it's loud and crowded, I think the risk of terrorist attack is higher for sure, but nowadays the risk of terrorist attack is higher everywhere in Europe, in trains, planes or even clubs when we expect it the least...

ReplyDeleteI do not like mass events . Usually at such events it is such a crowd that people still squeeze . There is a danger theft , an increased likelihood of a terrorist attack . Safety of such an event must be a very big operation .

I am pleased that my taxes pay for dry mass events . I would prefer that money was transferred to the poor children

Yes As I wrote at 1 point , I dont like mass events . I dont like parties , where there is a lot of people alien to me . I do not feel safe or comfortable.

I admire people who work in volunteering. I think that all these people have a good heart and does not depend only on their money.
I , unfortunately, I could not be a volunteer - for me time is money .
I totally agree with you on the second point, it's sad but true, but on the other hand it might convince many tourists to visit Poland more than one time.

ReplyDeleteI think it is a good idea. The only thing would be that they have to be well organized. With Kraków there is alot speculation about the city being ready for that many tourists at once.

ReplyDeleteAs I've written in previous comments, I like concerts. For me, such events must meet 3 requirements: safety, good organization and atmosphere

I'm not ok with that. I.e. events on National Stadium are mostly quite expensive, but we have paid for that construction from our taxes...

Regarding second point, I'm not sure that you're right, as from what I've heard since last year, we don't need to pay anything for National Stadium as it is self-sufficient,but please correct me if I'm wrong.

ReplyDeleteNowadays, I think it depends. Mass event are heaven for terrorist, so when many countries have security issues, life and health of participants are really in danger. When we're talking about I'm not 100% sure that everything will be ok. I have mixed feelings.

ReplyDeleteIts a good idea, those type of events show that other countries threat us "seriously". But I think this years location is mainly because of proximity to Russia, and just in time after Anakonda maneuvers end. Its all political.

I think Światowe Dni Młodzieży are far more exposed to terrorist threats. In this type of event (NATO summit) its not only Poland thats responsible for security, its a joint operation of all coalition forces.

It really depends what type of event are we talking here about. Because church events should be sponsored by the church..

Yes. It is a chance for young people to meet new people from around the world. I think that in the era of Facebook, paying for such initiatives is ok.

Volunteers are incredibly empathetic people. They spend their time, life and career to help others. Their behavior should appreciate, because not everyone is sacrifice for others in a world of materialism.

ReplyDelete1) I think it's a great idea. Of course there's always some inconviniance and risk involved when you organise them, but everything worth your time is demanding
2) I'm quite ok as long as we promote our country and we don't favour only particular groups.
3) I would have my doubts for w while maybe, but on the other hand when you resign from attending just because of that you already let the terrorists prevail
4) I think it's a great idea. It not only helps to build our civil society, but also allows people to develop numerous skills.

3. On Twitter I follow a Middle East and terrorism specialist, Wojciech Szewko, and he often states that World Youth Day will not be safe to be at.
4. I was a volunteer for a few years and I thinks it's a kind of activity that everyone should. Helping others is a wonderful thing.

ReplyDeleteI think in light of recent developments related to the terrorist attacks, so large concentrations of people are a great temptation for terrorists. If such a meeting has a purpose, which is sensible, then why not.
