Week 7 [09.01-15.01.2017] Carsharing comes to Poland

Have you ever heard about car-sharing? It is not widely common topic here, in Poland, but we're just getting increasingly closer to innovative solutions.

Car-sharing is a scheme of car rental mostly for short time exploitation (from minutes, hours to several days).

Process of car-sharing takes place in the mobile apllication and gives  benefits of obtaining a car without any additional costs (which we're forced to pay when we own a private car). This model meets the current needs of the user.

You might consider who is car-sharing created for. Surely for people who're making use of car intermittently. It also gives us a possibility of using different type of car.

Recently the word is that air pollution in polish cities embarrasses statistics of smog even in Beijing.  Car-sharing could help in reducing traffic. Increasing interest of car-sharing is also due to changing view about possession of car. The costs of owning a car is constantly rising, plenty of young people're deciding to use a public transport.

Why shouldn't we confuse this kind of transport with a typical car rent office? Carsharing isn't limited by any office's working hours, user's ability to drive is checked, method of payment is established in application. Getting into the car is much easier with carsharing method because of facility of acces from public transport.

Statistics say that carsharing allows user to save the money (even 135-435$ per month of transport costs - University of Berkeley's Research in 2008).

The first city that provided carsharing in Poland was Cracow with the fresh brand Traficar.

  1. Car-Sharing is a great idea, but I am not sure that this idea will become a popular in our country. Polish people thinks that car is the symbol of material status. If I have a luxury car (whatever it is parents or company car) my neighbors are thinking that I am a king of life. It is horrible.
I think that car-sharing can be a star in city if goverment will be reduce sum of free parking places in city or the polish will grow to the size of Tokyo or New York.
This moment is not goo for car-sharing.

I often travel to other cities in Europe, My friends gladly exploit this method transport, but I not usage yet.

I think that scale of car-sharing are too small to observe large reduce of pollution

    1. Thank you for your opinion. I think that you've mentioned of very important case - our uptight polish generation. It's all changing in very rapid way so I hope that next generations will bring more fresh and open-minded way of perception.

  2. I think that owning a car is not a symbol of material status as it was in the past. Maybe outside big cities it still is, but then a car is very useful at the same time. I've noticed that my friends who live in a city prefer public transport. I think that public transport in Warsaw is quite well organised. Also if someone can use a company car, then he or she usually resigns from a private one.

    1. What do you think about carsharing in Poland?

It might be a good solution for people who need a car for a short ride from time to time. However, I can't imagine a situation when I would choose car sharing than just call for a taxi or even just rent a car. Maybe if carsharing would be cheaper, who knows?

    2. Would you be involved in exploiting carsharing method?

I don't think so. I don't have any needs that carsharing could meet at the moment. But I would like to observe how the idea evolves in the futures.

    3. Do you believe that carsharing will tactilely contribute to traffic and air pollution reduction in polish cities?

No, I don't believe it would reduce air pollution. It's still just a car which probably would be used by a singe person at a time.

    1. Thank you for your opinion. In case of response on my first question - you could imagine that someone, who doesn't have a car and live in the center of big city, even Warsaw for example, needs to get some big groceries. In that case it would be very comfortable to share a car only for this action, instead of carrying many of heavy products in typical public transport :)

  3. 1. Carsharing in Poland is needed, especially if we want to reduce the level of air pollution. Many people can not afford a car and this is an opportunity to quickly move or simply make life easier.

    2. Certainly, if I havent private a car, or I'd be in a city where it is available, I would rent a car . I like to take care of the environment, so it would be another good reason.

    3. Yes, I think that definitely will help to reduce traffic and air pollution. These cars are ecological which can not excrete with each other so much exhaust and users are renting car with a few people.

  4. I love this idea! Business is great. It gives a lot of opportunities to travel, save some costs in short period and freedom for young people that just start they carrier. Carsharing has a lot of possibilities to use it for the weekend, to travel and to make deals. If this service will be quite cheap then more and more people with having a change to make life better. I am inevitably involved in use it for travel, I like to go to different cities and not care about full support of car, I just want to use it and drive from point A to point B. Air conditions depend on multiple values, and probably car pollutions are not the most important aspect of this problem. We should think about it.

  5. 1. What do you think about carsharing in Poland?
Carsharing in general is a great idea. Especially in big cities which would like to reduce traffic in centres.
But I'm not sure if it will be good in Poland. Mostly people don't care about public things (like a bus, train or even ordinary bench in the park). If cars will be dirty and devastated or in poor condition and therefore there will be big risk of failure then it will overshadow other advantages.

    2. Would you be involved in exploiting carsharing method?
At the beginning no. Maybe during travels in other cities.
But I will watch how it evolves - maybe it will be so great that it will be reasonably to sell private car.

    3. Do you believe that carsharing will tactilely contribute to traffic and air pollution reduction in polish cities?
It may contribute to traffic reduction, but I don't think that it help with air pollution problem - it is caused not only by cars but also furnaces in houses (and consequently - human stupidity - waste incineration etc).

    1. Thank you for your opinion. You're right with the concerns about polish people behaviour in cars, however I believe that in the several last years polish people were getting more and more involved in topic of aesthetics in immediate area.

  6. Thank you for a great blog post.
    1. What do you think about carsharing in Poland?

I think that it is really great idea and will definitely work in Poland. Many people are not interested in having own car and such solution is helpful, especially during bad weather or when someone is late.

    2. Would you be involved in exploiting carsharing method?

Why not. I have my own car but this would be really nice experience. :)

    3. Do you believe that carsharing will tactilely contribute to traffic and air pollution reduction in polish cities?

No, I am not convinced that it would reduce air pollution. Maybe some small percent but please remember that it is still a car.

  7. 1. I Think it's a magnificent idea. It can easily substitute cabs, and public transport, and if your work is situated in city center, where parking spots are paid, it's also a great alternative for owning a car for yourself.

    2. From the place I live I can easily get to my work or city center by underground or bus. Car-sharing is something I might use sometimes, but I don't think it would be very often.

    3. I think that we're in a great need of introducing some sort of a new mean of public transport. Car-sharing is only a new way for rental, and the probability of being stucked in traffic is the same for driving rented or owned car. I think the same about pollution. If we all just jump into rented cars instead of using ones we own, it won't change a thing.

    1. Thank you for your opinion. Air pollution is a hard case to solve and as you wrote - only substitution of owning a private car wouldn't change this problem, but car-sharing cars frequently use eco-friendly solutions so there is a chance for more ecological vehicles on the streets.

It's hard to say as I don't use or possess a car. Although idea seems fine.

    2. Would you be involved in exploiting carsharing method?
    Not soon.

    3. Do you believe that carsharing will tactilely contribute to traffic and air pollution reduction in polish cities?
    I don't think so.

It is good technology. I think on our eyes would begin new time in technology car. It will be technology of futture.
    2. Would you be involved in exploiting carsharing method?
    No, I never involved yet.
    3. Do you believe that carsharing will tactilely contribute to traffic and air pollution reduction in polish cities?
Maybe and I would like that, this car will produce in city of Poland.

  10. 1. It's excellent idea! People who lives in big cities are usually commuting by public transport. But from time to time they need to transport something in short distance, or drive away for a trip. So carsharing is more streamline approach than having own car, because of its constant costs (insurance, fuel, overhaul). How simple can it be?
2 It's interesting concept. I've already have a car, so I don't need carsharing now. But when my car will be broken i's a nice alternative :)
3 It is only one step to improve our air quality, so let it happen. But main problem is laying on the quality of heating systems, and poverty. When someone is freezing, isn't thinking about ecology.

  11. 1. What do you think about carsharing in Poland?
I think it would greatly benefit our life, mostly by reducing CO emission.

    2. Would you be involved in exploiting carsharing method?

Depends, but granted i live in city center sure i would. But if i was living in a countryside I doubt I would

    3. Do you believe that carsharing will tactilely contribute to traffic and air pollution reduction in polish cities?

I think so, but in my opinion the pollution is mostly caused by burning trash in cities (krakow, warsaw, and recent scandal with high toxicity in the air)

  12. 1. What do you think about carsharing in Poland?

I think it has a long way to go, it’s virtually nonexistent nowadays, but it has great potential. I think it should be treated as public transport – subsidized and promoted, because it can not only decrease the traffic, but also limit the production of cars – not everyone needs to have one.

    2. Would you be involved in exploiting carsharing method?

I would to a certain degree, especially while out of town and in need of a car.

    3. Do you believe that carsharing will tactilely contribute to traffic and air pollution reduction in polish cities?

As I said, there’s still a long way to go for carsharing before that happens.

  13. 1. What do you think about carsharing in Poland?
I think that this is a very interesting idea. For me the idea Is a same as sharing a bike with Veturilo. I think that this is designed for people who are not particular about cars. If someone do not care about a car which he or she is driving then carsharing is a perfect match. But for car fans it is a bad idea.

    2. Would you be involved in exploiting carsharing method?
I like my car, so I will ne be involved in this.

    3. Do you believe that carsharing will tactilely contribute to traffic and air pollution reduction in polish cities?
I think it will not help on reducing air pollution and traffic. If we are using cars to move, it does not matter which car we are using. If we are driving, then we are a next person to make a traffic bigger. About air pollution, even if this car is more ecological, we have to charge them with electricity, which also produce air pollution. If we want to create less pollution, then we should use bikes or public transport.

Carsharing is so beatiful perspective of reduce pollution, crowd in the capital and others big cities and some kind of tolerance lessons for another people in process of sharing (of course for Instance with sharing each other idea). I remember the first mentioned rent bicycle in the cities and know we have network new bicycle path and so popular means of transport.
    2. Would you be involved in exploiting carsharing method?
I would like to exploit these kind of way to work but I haven't license driving car yet but I volountere encourage friends to using carsharing.
    3. Do you believe that carsharing will tactilely contribute to traffic and air pollution reduction in polish cities?
Yes, I support every possibilities to unloaded
    impurity our enviromental.

  15. Thanks for a really interesting article! I'm glad that there are more and more people who devote their attention to the problems of traffic and pollution. As to your questions:
    1. I think the concept it definitelly worth exploring and even though it may for now seem rather exotic to some poeple I think it's a great idea to introduce it to Poland and try to convice the uncovinced to it.
    2. I guess I would if not permanently then just to try it out. It seems like a cool new experience
    3. I surely hope so. But even if the scale of contribution is not vast I still believe it'll chip in to making things a little better.

For me, this is great idea. I hope that this project will work out and spread among most of the cities.

    2. Would you be involved in exploiting carsharing method?

Yes, I am interested and I am sure that I will try it, but at the moment I have my own car.

    3. Do you believe that carsharing will tactilely contribute to traffic and air pollution reduction in polish cities?

Yes. For me it may help. Less cars on the streets, also this cars look as new and small so it will have influence on air pollution reduction.

  17. 1. It is certainly cool and noteworthy idea. I can not say whether the car-sharing will develop in Poland, but I support it.

    2. Definitely yes, there are many situations in my life, where car-sharing would be useful.

    3. That is the only thing that puzzles me. At the moment I think it is unlikely that the car-sharing has contributed to reduce traffic and smog in the city. I think it would be quite the opposite. Why? In several cities in Poland you can rent bikes, which do not produce fumes or cause traffic jams - and if you could hire a car as easily as a bicycle, that's what most people would choose?

  18. 1. What do you think about car sharing in Poland? It is very interesting idea. However I am not sure, that people in Poland, supported by such a novel idea.
    2. Would you be Involved in exploiting car sharing method? Yes, in my opinion can be very useful and saves costs associated with self-maintenance car.
    3. Do you believe That car sharing will tactilely Contribute to traffic and air pollution reduction in polish cities? Maybe traffic will be less with car-sharing, however amount of smog is still huge, and it will be hard to decrease.

  19. 1. Polish people still perceive car as a measure of success and social status. If you drive a rather expensive BMW – it means that you have succeed in your life. If in the front of your garage there’s a rusty Skoda on its last legs – means you were not that successful.

So as long as this perception will not change I don’t think that sharing cars may become very popular in Poland. We tend to think of cars as of something we own. We don’t pay for service of driving or renting a car. Because a car is a property. Full stop.

    2. Living in Warsaw makes me think that it’s better idea to stop using cars in general. I had money and power to make such a decision - I’d rather ban all of cars in the city center and develop more convenient public transportation if.

    3. Not really. If you analyze data a little bit more deep you can see that actually most of pollution in the cities is not coming from cars, but from households. We use outdated heating stoves without any filters in chimneys. We don’t pay attention to what we burn and whether it’s harmful for the environment or no. So there’s a long way in front of us to make the air cleaner, but I think cars are not the priority in this battle.
