Week 7 [09.01-15.01.2017] A different way to learn business

Great idea! Share practical knowledge about business. I want you to introduce a school that is different than all others. This school invites real business people to give a lecture. They only hire people that have their own company, and they do real project. Here, you don't have exams; you only need to listen, ask questions and talk. Real examples and real histories of how to build a successful company.  You hear about failures of these people, and what they did wrong. They try to share experiences and best practices. This school is ASBIRO.

Many people are thinking of running their businesses and are looking for offers of studies at universities of economics or different kinds of higher business schools. Get there, go to lectures, get books to read and memorize, write projects on more or less thrilling topics in some way associated with entrepreneurship, and finally sit an exam- you have become an educated entrepreneur. Among lecturers there are the people who were the  first graduates specialising in economics, innovation, and business management. The school gives you  practical knowledge and skills: how to register a company, how to deal with ‘ZUS’, how to set up a company, e.g. in UK.

If you study there, you have a chance to see and talk with plenty of great entrepreneurs like Andrzej Blikle, Robert Gwiazdowski, Paweł Tkaczyk. The tradition is that on Saturday after classes all students of courses with professors go to a restaurant, where you can discuss various topics. During dinners you get the most interesting information, advice, inspiration, and knowledge.Networking meetings are held in the hotel restaurant where participants can stay overnight.

Well, it sounds appealing but I am not sure if such approach would work for everyone... I think it is easier to keep pace with learning when there are checkpoints. Most people are not well organised and without exams they probably would end up studying forever.

On the other hand, if someone is really devoted to learning, then they don't need exams. Anyway, if someone is interested in what he or she is learning, then an exam should not be a problem at all. The key point is to learn only those things you are willing to learn. Unfortunately, I think that ignoring all the other stuff might not be a good idea, so there is always something boring that you just have to deal with.

    2. How do you learn about business?

I learn on my mistakes :) Schools like ASBIRO might be a good place to learn business but mostly because of networking opportunity. If it is a business school different from any other than why they try to comply with regulations regarding bachelor degree? I agree that opportunity to talk with real businessmen is great and probably motivational. But some of lecturers seems to be better in marketing their self-brand than running a company. I admit that there are people with a good reputation as well but how much time do they teach students? Aren't they just eye-catching names to attract new students?

    1. Maybe you have right. It is very important to thing about mistakes, and it more important to learn from others mistakes. I think we should share best practices how to make business great, even if they try to catch student for names its good start. They make a lot of videos, and we can use them in the process of learning. We can watch it every day, multiple times. We can do the same thing with books, notes, and theory, but in "regular" schools you don't have much chance to listen about experience from real projects.

  2. 1. In my opinion this is a very good idea, which allows the students to de-stress and focus on learning. The prospect exam usually only introduces unnecessarily nervous atmosphere that something can go wrong. Described the profile of the school and the way in which work I like and I think it is a breakthrough.

    2. The company where I work implements many projects with various companies, I think that's one of the best ways to learn the business. After that, I read all kinds of magazines that help me in my work and allow you to learn the business.

    1. Thank you for your opinion. I agree that this is a breakthrough. We need this practical way of learning; there are plenty of people, and everyone learns in a different way. We should use other hands-on experience and share they wisdom, even if this by talking.

I am not convienced about it. For me exam is proof that some part of knowledge was gained.

    1. You have right; the exam should proof that you know something but is relatively easy to cheat in exams or write a test in that way everyone will do it. The problem with regular exams it that they should check the theory. Unfortunately, most of them just check if you can answer some questions and they don't verify your way of thinking or other values that are useful in real life

I'm not quite sure it's good solution. Of course when you're interested in something and want to know more about it - I see no problem. But if this school gives some kind of certificate to it's students.. How does it evaluate their knowledge?

    Ad.2
I think that only way to learn about bussiness is to have one. Until one solves real problem there is a minimum chance to fully understand it. So in my opinion only way to learn bussiness is to participate in one, observe, make decisions, etc.

    1. That's a very good question. I will answer int another way... how do you evaluate the value of business? There is no easy way to answer to it. We can try, but for one person better will be to make new business relation and for other is more important to know best practices. How you can know that someone will use other knowledge in real life?

  5. I think exams is not needed for all. Practical skills are the most important, but many companies need formal papers for prove skills.
Schools with exams or ended with certificate are a good motivation for me. It set challenge.

I agree with MW. One way for learn business is make the business.

It will be too easy and available for everyone. So in result, diploma won't be worth too much.

    2. How do you learn about business?
The best way is probably creating own business and developing it. Overcoming real problems, searching for solutions etc.
In addition great idea is observing other successful people, owners of big businesses.

And sometimes you just need to have luck or great innovative idea.

Exams, or any other form of evaluation - whether we like it or not – give us an idea of where we are and how we are doing. It’s difficult to manage one’s education without evaluating one’s progress.

    2. How do you learn about business?

You should ask yourself this question before joining this school. Can business be taught? Especially during a bachelor studies, to young people often without any experience. I think the conversations with successful businessman may be extremely helpful, but you need knowledge of economics, finance, marketing and management to filter what you hear. Ideally, you would have some experience to compare things you hear to what you experienced yourself.

  8. 1. Do you like the idea of school without exams?

On the one hand this is a good idea, because for many people exams or tests are very stressful. In my opinion when you are stressed, you mind is very limited and you even feel empty inside. This form of examination is incommensurate with your knowledge, because you might be perfectly prepared, but during stressful examination you can forget everything.
But on the other hand exams and test are motivation to learn for some people. Without this those people will not learn anything. I think that a good idea will be to find some others forms of certification.

    2. How do you learn about business?
I learn about business every day. I think, in schools should be a greater accent on subjects that will learn people practical way of business.

I dont know...some people study the hardest before exams. I think exams are a good way for students to learn and good way for teachers to validate their studying methods.

How do you learn about business?

Best way is to learn from someone, more than one person, take some knowlage from them and adjust it to your needs, this and from your own mistakes.

It sounds curiously and I think it's a great idea for people which definitely want to succed in some new business - we all know many examples of people who rocketed without graduate any University. This could be an interesting option for people who want to set up their own business with practical adivces, without loosing their precious time for theoretical knowledge.

How do you learn about business?
From my and poeple's around me experience. It's important to observe how particular industries work, to talk with more experienced people (not only from the industry that you're involved in), to learn books of people who succeded or participing interesting conferrences (to get inspired and hear about some fresh news).

  11. That depends on what field do we study. I have the impression that in most cases exams are the only motivation to learn the material. However, when Business is the case, sharing experiences through discussions seems to be the better option.

I learn Business by daily observations of companies I know, especially the one in which I work. We can also learn much by conversating with other people, so I try to expand the base of my contacts every single day.

  12. Yes! of course, that this support. Unfortunately, I've never heard of such a school. Due to compulsory education in Poland such schools could only be additional. Besides, to teach in such a school, you need to have the desire to share their experiences, thoughts, give advice to young people - I'm afraid that in our country the school is not real. I think so, because I know how hard it is to conduct its own business without a big budget. Poland is not a country for young entrepreneurs, but I believe that this will change.

  14. 1. Well. It really depends on type of studies. Somehow I cannot imagine schools different than business ones where there are no exams. In the end – in most of the cases – exam is a proof of knowledge. It shows that student is capable of resolving some problems and that training which was done during semester has its effect.

    2. I’d say that the biggest opportunity to learn anything about certain business is being part of it. Means – you learn by practice. In my opinion you cannot create any general theory which can be applicable to many businesses, or even to multiple cases in one company. Each problem is individual and different. It has to be approached in different way. Hence, it’s hard to talk about business without any real-life examples.

It sounds different and it is some other idea to gain knowledge. I think that people who experienced running their own business will get from this kind of lectures the most. It is not advertised to young students, because mostly they don’t know questions about real business, daily problems etc.

How do you learn about business?

Usually I gain this knowledge from other people, they are my inspiration. It is good to have someone who have his own business or to work for someone like that and have possibility to gain experience. This is very useful and helpful.

  17. That school sounds like something from the 22nd century! 😊 I think the idea behind it is great. Not everything can be tought in a strictly formal way the world has changed and so should plenty of our teaching/learning techniques. I hope that this school will become a trendsetter for the next ones to follow. When it comes to me I try to read as much as I can from people with buisiness experience as well as to use some of my spare time on going to various open meetings, lectures and so called "f**k up nights". 😊
