TOLKIEN THE MOVIE
Tolkien is an American biographical drama film written by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford and directed by Dome Karukoski in 2019
It pictures the early life of the author of The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings by English professor J.R.R. Tolkien.
I have been looking very impatiently to the premiere of the movie, as I considere myself a big lords od the rings fan. It is undoubtedly one of the best book trilogies ever. I think the movie is wonderful opportunity to discover what drove the author J.K.K. Tolkien to write one of the best pieces of literature of all times.
The film discusses the formative years of the life of the famous author, where he sets up friendship, demonstrates bravery, and discovers inspiration among a group of college fellow writers and artists.

The first scenes of the movie show Young Roland (Harry Gilby) playing with swords during his idyllic childhood in Sarehole village. His love of myths was passed on to him from his mother Mabel (Laura Donnelly), who brings up her two sons with stories of dragons, knights and gold. After his mother Mabel dies, Ronald and his brother are orphaned, and become wards of Father Francis Morgan (Colm Meaney). They are being placed in a boarding house for children in similar life circumstances.

At the beginning of the school period, Ronald finds himself with three best friends, Christopher Wiseman (Ty Tennant), Robert Gilson (Albie Marber) and Geoffrey Bache Smith (Adam Bregman). They meet daily at Barrows after school and discuss their artistic pursuits, describing themselves the T.C.B.S. (Tea Club, Barrovian Society).
This is the formation of Tolkien's cherished "fellowship," underlined by sweeping music in case you missed the connection. The young actors create a believable bond, as do the group of older actors who portray them once they reach college college (Nicholas Hoult, with intense blue eyes and sharp cheekbones, as Tolkien, Anthony Boyle as Geoffrey, Tom Glynn-Carney as Christopher, and Patrick Gibson as Robert).
His war time experience also had an influence on his writing. J.R.R. Tolkien participated in one of the bloodiest battles of the I world war - The Battle of Somme.
He firsthandly wittnesed the carnage, suffering and pointless losses of life. The devastating experince had a profound effect on Tolkien's works, mostly on The Lord of the Rings.

I really enjoyed the astonishing depth of the world Tolkien created. The story seems so real, despote the fantastic elements. It is one of the most insightful analysis of the nature of good, and more specifically the nature of good, in all literature. A central question posed is the lust for power. The characters acknowledge, that the ring is very powerful. However not all of the realize that the only way to defeat Sauron is to destroy it. Boromir dies, because the power overwhelmed. He tries to take the ring from Frodo. Saruman, once a good wizard gets corrupted by it and turns to the evil side The rings influences negatively even the best of men.
The recurring motive of the stories is also sacrifice. Character like Frodo have to give up their happy painless life and pursue a task. The final success is a result of cooperation between extraordinary characters like Gandalf and Eragorn and ordinary ones like Frodo and Sam. Eventually Frodo is the one who carries and destroys the ring. He is given this responsobility, as hobbits were modest in nature, they did not seek power. Unlike many other heroes in the book who got ruined because of their lust for power. This way he was resistent to the power of the ring. He could withstand the temptations.Tolkien emphasizes altruism and responsobility. The characters are willing to give their own lives in order to fulfill their obligations.

I'm not a LOTR fan. My brother is a fan of trilogy and he read each book many times, but I couldn't force myself to struggle through "Fellowship of the Ring". Last year I read all three books and I must admit that after quite boring beginning, story is quite addictive. If we talk about movies, I still can't find time to watch them, only first movie lasts 3 hours! I do not plan to go to the cinema to see "Tolkien". About last question, I didn't watch LOTR or Hobbit so I can't answer this.
ReplyDeleteI love LOTR. Ever since the first part of the movie came out, it's amazing. I have seen all the parts from 10x and I remember all scenes and dialogues... the story is amazing which shows the right face of good and evil ideally placed in fantasy world. When I was a kid, I started to read Tolkien, but I was too young to understand it and it was hard to read. Today he plans to return to these books and read the Silmarillion in particular. I love this LOTR universe and everything that is associated with it, I once collected figurines from LOTR painting them myself, and making models to play with LOTR locations. I will definitely go to the movie, I am waiting for it.
ReplyDeleteI dont read any reviews to get a movie without any previous grades. As far as the hobbit and LOTRA are concerned, however, LOTR definitely wins, the hobbit is also interesting, but it is too based on the tale and the show of evil is very limited.
Firstly, before I answer the questions I would like to ask you are you really a fan of The Lord Of The Rings and Tolkien himself? You made so many errors in your text, e.g. J.K.K Tolkien instead of J.R.R. Tolkien, Young Roland instead young Ronald or John Ronald (he was not an Asian named Yound :P) and you wrote Roland instead of Ronald! The next victim is Aragorn, who has been named Eragorn by you, almost like Eragon (it is another character from another story!). You also wrote "Character like Frodo have to give up their happy painless life [...]" like Frodo would have a multiple personality disorder. I am astonished by your text because once you are using great and complex english and another time you place such a mistakes.
ReplyDeleteAnd now answering your questions, yes I am a fan of The Lord of the Rings. It has very unique and wonderfull climate, great plot and many other things good book (or movie, depending what we are talking about) should have. The music is a masterpiece. I could go on about the advantages. Although I do not think it is the best movie trylogy ever, there are other also very good like The Matrix trylogy, etc. What's more, when you wrote about great metaphore of good and evil and lust of power, I thought it is not a complete model of reality it shows us. Maybe it would be more real if the ring had some good purpose and this one would be really unstable and dangerous to bare. But destroying the ring removes the problem of lust for power, but eliminates the power also. In real life there are areas like governing countries, where somebody has to bare the responsibility of power and there are no posibility of throwing it to trash and making an anarchy society, because it would meant a chaos.
Of course I watched the trylogy and not only once. Also I didn't hear they are showing it again in cinemas.
I like The Lord of the Rings movies more than The Hobbit, but there are also a nice moments in The Hobbit I like very much.
Watching those movies was a real nice experience for me, but I haven’t become a big fan of this trilogy. At that time my heart was stolen by Harry Potter. I think that if I had to choose between a Lord of the Rings and a Hobbit, I would be more inclined to the Lord of the Rings. But like I said before, always will choose the story about Hogwarts.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a huge fan of Lord of the Rings. I've always loved the whole universe of Tolkien trilogy but never tried to sink into it. For me, the biggest advantage of the Tolkien series is a universe that was created. The calm Shire, hell alike Mordor, and other locations are amazing for me.
ReplyDeleteI did not watch the Tolkien movie but I would like to do it tomorrow with my wife :). I enjoyed Lord of the Rings movie more than Hobbit one because for me they are movies I watched when I was a kid and it developed my imagination. I enjoyed Hobbit book more than Lord of the Rings though.
I'm really into fantasy so I also really enjoyed Lord of the Rings movies, unfortunately I have never finished reading the books, I read the Hobbit though.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest until now I didn't know that there is a movie about Tolkien, I wish to watch it, but due to lack of spare time, I will most likely wait till it show up on Netflix.
I liked both Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies, but I think I enjoyed LotR more, I feel like Hobbit was a bit overstretched at times, and on the other hand LotR might be too short ;)
I’m huge fan of LOTR! I remember all dialogues and scenes. World that was created by Tolkien shows the struggle between good and evil. And there is not so obvious, that good always win. Yup, we know, that Frodo finally destroyed the Ring, but he wouldn’t make it without his best friend Sam, who helped him in this great adventure. Let’s not forget about others from the Fellowship of the Ring, such as funny and strong Gimli, elf “too good” Legolas, Gandald the Grey/White, Aragorn (my favorite character, Viggo Mortensten role of life) great human knight and rightful king and some of other Hobbits, Elfs and Orks. I’m going to Tolkien movie next week, can’t wait. Hobbit movies are not even half good as Lord of the Rings trilogy!
ReplyDeleteI remember that I was impressed when I was watching LOTR for the 1st time but I'm not like crazy about it. Back in the days I think it might be quite milestone as a tool to make money because it wasn't common to build whole community around a title. People get crazy about it and that's because it's really well told story. I think it's what I like the most about the series that how deep it goes in our minds. But on the other hand I wasn't aware that Tolkien movie is going to be published this year. I have to give it a try because for some time I'm not the biggest fun of fantasy that I used to be back in the days. As long as I liked both LOTR and Hobbit movies I think it will be worth at least try!
ReplyDeleteI would't call myself a big LOTR fan but I like this universe. It is a well developed, rich and detailed world with a huge lore. Events from the LOTR trilogy is just a part of Middle-earth history. And unlike many fantasy authors, Tolkien created the world first and after that placed some stories in it. The Lord of the Rings is built on something he had created decades previously, and that itself was built on centuries of myth and legend from Northern Europe. And this is what I like most about his works.
ReplyDeleteI did watch Tolkien's works film adaptations. I enjoyed LOTR series and it have many fantastic moments. My favourites are "You shall not pass!" and "Rohirrim charge". Unfortunately I can't say the same about the Hobbit trilogy. They stretched it to get 3 movies where the last movie was just a series of battle sequences. They even throw Legolas in there.
1. Are you a Lord of the Rings fan ?
ReplyDeleteWhat did you like the most about the series ?
Do you think it is the movie trilogy ever ?
Well, yes. I love the books and movies. The thing I like the most is complexity and detail level of the world presented in books and movies. I love the fact that Tolkien not only thought about new races, maps, languages, he created the whole folclore.
2. Did you match the Tolkien movie, are you planning,
to go to cinema to see it ?
I am planning to go to the cinema and see it as I don't know much about him and I would like to know more for sure.
3. Did you like the Lord of the Rings or Hobbit movies
more ?
I prefer Lord of The Rings over Hobbit movies. But generally speaking I am all about the books - not the movies.
I've watched LOTR some time ago but then didn't feel too close with the series but I'm planning to watch all episodes again and refresh it a bit. I think that my opinion about the series might change 180 degrees. Because of watching it that much time ago, I'm not really able to answer question about most loved episodes or scenes of trilogy, but just by seeing it's fanbase it must be worth watching it and being one of the best trilogies.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to go to the cinema for movie night with all LOTR episodes and Hobbit. Once I was but there were some problems - we all know how at younger age cinema nights looked alike.
1. Are you a Lord of the Rings fan ?
ReplyDeleteWhat did you like the most about the series ?
Do you think it is the movie trilogy ever ?
I'm not a big fan, but I watched the movie. I really enjoyed it, and I heard Tolkien was hell of a guy with his weird view of the world :D
2. Did you match the Tolkien movie, are you planning
to go to cinema to see it ?
No I didn't, but I will. I like watching movies in cinema but due to Master thesis I had to give it up for some time.
3. Did you like the Lord of the Rings or Hobbit movies
more ?
I liked more Lord of the Rings movies. It was something new and very addictive. I remember watching it with my brother couple of times every of 3 parts :D I was a young boy back then :D
I am LOTR fan since I remember and that was before movies came out in fact I made and effort to read trilogy and hobbit in original while being in high school. Have to say that too a bit since it wasn't yet google translate times :) I do like the attention to details that can be found in Tolkien's books, he really have it all thought through quite well.
ReplyDeleteI'm planning to watch Tolkien in the cinema soon, although I do have quite a big knowledge of his life already so I'm afraid it those two will fit together :)
I wont be able to pick if I like Hobbit or LOTR better, to me neither one is complete without the other, so I cant differentiate it.
1. I'm not a fan of the Lord of the Rings.
ReplyDelete2. Unfortunately, I can't answer on this question.
3. Unfortunately, I wouldn't go to the cinema, it is not a movie for me.
4. I didn't wach at them to the end, it's hard for me to write something about it.
I liked Lord of the Rings when I was a teenager and I still have sentiment to this book. First I read Hobbit, but trilogy was a masterpiece for me in that time. I saw also movies, but I prefer reading than watching and movies never meet my expectations. I didn’t plan to watch this movie, but your text reminded me about Tolkien, so maybe I will go.
ReplyDeleteIt’s really difficult topic for me. Actually around that LOTR hype I’m hardly neutral. I’m not a huge fan of adventure books or films. Even though they are so popular. I read some Harry Potter when I was young but that’s all. I also tried to watch first movie of LOTR but in fact it didn’t touch me at all. But I’m not trying to be hater or something. Everyone has different taste and that’s amazing. If everyone liked same thing we would have only one type of books.
ReplyDeleteI cannot call myself a Lord of the Rings fan, but I do enjoy watching this trilogy as it has its extraordinary and unrepeatable climate. The most interesting part for me was the plot itself, but wars were made pretty nice as well. Yes, I belive that this Tolkien has created the greatest trilogy ever. Watching those movies on a big screen are necessary as it would be a waste watching it at home on a small one. Whenever there will be a new Tolkien movie, I will not wait a second longer to buy a ticket. I can't really compare both series as I've enjoyed both the same way. Can't wait to see another great movie based in their world.
ReplyDeleteI can call myself as a huge fan of LOTR trilogy.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed the whole plot, characters and dialogues.
Haven't watched Tolkien movie yet, but I'm planning to do so in the near future.
I prefer LOTR trilogy more than Hobbit (too much CGI).
I like novels by J.R.R. Tolkien. It's an amazing world that absorbs in its entirety. The Lord of the Rings has also been shot in a brilliant way and this is a trilogy for me. The three-part work, based on Tolkien's novel, is one of the largest film productions made, which introduced a new world into pop culture. I liked the first part the most, which was the introduction to later action. This is where the ring team was gathered, it all started here. I like the Lord of the Ring and the Hobbit. These are very important films that have brought fantastic cinema to a new level. Honestly, I am waiting for more Tolien's works which I will be filmed. I have not heard about the film about Tolkien, but it can really be interesting. I think I will go to the cinema for him :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I really like Lord of the Rings universe (actually as much as like Star Wars one). I watched all Peter Jacksons’ movies, and enjoyed them, however I think they only scratched the surface. The fantasy world by Tolkien is in fact much more complex (I did not reproach Jackson here, it is normal that everything cannot be included in the movie) and deeper – I voraciously read all three books and also Hobbit (I have to admit that Jacksons was really successful in expanding this rather short story into three movies). I really had fun finding differences between movie trilogy and books – I think the most notable one was related to the involvement of the ghost army in the battle of Minas Tirith – in the movie this battle was won thanks to the ghosts, in the book they were not there and only helped Aragorn to capture the ships from the pirates. Here is the most interesting question: how would the ghost behave while facing Nazgul King? Would they fight for Aragorn or decide to serve Sauron?
ReplyDeleteI really like Lord of the Rings, I watched all the movies and I think they are really great. Once I even tried to read the trilogy, but I think because of my age, I was discouraged by very extensive descriptions and lack of lightness (that's what I thought then). Unfortunately, now I do not have too much time for reading for my own pleasure, but I will certainly try one more time to read the trilogy. When it comes to newer movies, I only saw the Hobbit from 2012. To cut long story short, it didn't impress me.
ReplyDelete1. I'm not a fan, I didn't read the books, but I did enjoy the movie trilogy. What I liked about it is that it is extremely immersive.
ReplyDelete2. As I said I didn't read the book, so I can't compare it to the movie. And I don't think I would want to go to the cinema to watch it since I'm not a fan.
3. I watched the whole Lord of The Rings trilogy and the first Hobbit and I liked Lord of The Rings trilogy more.
1. Yes! I am! I love LOTR, and I read all of the books, and I watched all movies. I think that this is the greatest trilogy in the history of world cinematography. Especially Battle of Helmes Deep, was the best screened battle in history.
ReplyDelete2. I've seen this movie. It's a pity that they didn't pay attention to Tolkien's great faith. I'm not a believer, but Tolkien's faith had a big impact on his books. I also understand why they didn't it. Faith could divert attention from his person.
3. I love LOTR, but in my opinion, the hobbit was a much worse movie.
