Week 7 [03.06-09.06] Why Formula One is number one?

Due to the return of Robert Kubica, the Formula One in our country is reviving. Open TV broadcasts starting from a forty-fifth minute of every race are available to everyone. Whether Formula One is something more than just a summer substitute for ski jumping in Polish homes?

The history of Formula One has its roots in the 20s and 30s of the last century, however, the official date of its creation is 1946. The history of this sport is so beautiful and rich that it is impossible to describe everything now. The legacy of this sport is really great. It is not only about over 1000 Grand Prix but first of all about the history of the struggle and steadfastness of people who took part in races, both on the track and in factories and in pit lane. Now the world of Formula One is bidding farewell to Niki Lauda, the driver who, just six weeks after the macabre accident in which he nearly died, returned to competition. In that season, Lauda lost the championship in the last race of the season, from which the Austrian withdrew after two laps, because he felt that it is too dangerous to race in such rainy conditions as they were then.

The current Formula One is mainly about speed, the latest technological achievements and money. The budgets of the two largest teams, Mercedes and Ferrari, are up to 450 million euros. Each. All this money is spent to build the fastest car of the season, a car that will be the pride for the team’s fans. And there is someone to please, because according to estimates, each race weekend brings together around 200,000 fans which is over 4 million throughout the season. According to data presented by Nielsen, the sport’s fanbase in 2018 was about 506 million people. But what is the one and only,  absolute center of Formula One? The answer is extremely simple, the cars. Modern cars are able to accelerate to over 360km/h and even below 200km/h they produce an aerodynamic pressure so large that they can ride on the ceiling. However, all these amazing boundaries that F1 cars can exceed are not worth anything, because the only thing that matters is to be faster than your opponents.

Currently, Formula One offers a number of varied possibilities to watch races. In fact, I should have said to consume races, because it  is not only watching anymore. Thanks to F1 TV PRO, we can choose with which driver we travel during the transmission, listen to his conversations with engineers or follow the situation on the track with the exact times of each sector, differences between drivers and live telemetry.
At the end I attach the video with the best, that is, battles:

Do you think that Formula One is more than a group of guys driving around?
Are you fans of another racing series?
Or maybe there is something in the sport you are passionate about that makes it the number one?

  1. I'm not very interested in Formula One races, but I think that it would be unfair to say that this is only a group of guys driving around. Every sport can be said to be just a group of people kicking the ball or running around the track pointlessly, but the emotions accompanying the competition make all these sports unique. I'm not a car person so I'm not a fon of any aanother racing series. To be honest only kind of sport event I like to watch is the game of our national team in volleyball or football, but it is more about country than about sport.

Of course it is more than that. There are big money involved also. For some people even emotions. But honestly, not for me. I do not enjoy such performances very much. Although in a past sometimes it happened that I was watching some race. The biggest race I could be fan of is from Star Wars The Phantom Menace where Anakin was racing with aliens. Much fun I also took from racing games, and the Anakin's racing among them. Although if taking things seriously, more exciting for me are races through life, races in mastering some skills or achieving some goals. This is how it appeales to me. I think money spent on racing could be used a lot better.

  3. I'm not interested in F1, I only knew what the season in 2008-2009 looks like because my brother is fascinated by f1. I respect those who love F1 because everyone has their favorite forms of competition. However, I liked always to play with brother to F1 on the computer for competition. I like football and hockey more. I love soccer and club competitions in various world leagues. I like Hockey because there is always a fast-paced game there and is very surprising like football.

  4. Of course, I think that Formula One is more than a group of guys driving around. I think that this sport is very personable. I really love cars, and in my opinion, driving it's a beautiful passion. I'm not very involved in the Formula One, but I definitely understand this sport very well. From my childhood, football is my number one sport. I even played for a moment in girl football club.

    1. Football is my second favourite sport! It is very positive, when a woman says, that she loves cars and football 😊

  5. Formula 1 is something more because it is not only limited to what we see on TV to a single race. Most of the work is put months before the race. It is long lasting work of constructors, engineers, and mechanics which result is vehicles we won't see on roads. It requires often unconventional solutions and rare skills. The race is the presentation of those solutions.
I'm a huge fan of any bike race like Tour de France, giro d'italia or Vuelta Espana (tour de Pologne is also ok). It is some sense like F1 races, but it also requires the work of the whole team to win the race, something you won't see on a car race.
Currently, I'm really passionate about paramotors flighting. Well, it is not the same sport like running or cycling, but I would like to start my first flight. It includes a lot of freedom in it. Even more, than climbing I would say. Paramotor flighting is a rare sport, which requires lots of skill.

    1. People usually do not see or do not want to see the whole amount of work, that is behind the results on the track or in the cycling race. I keep my fingers crossed so that you can take your first paramotor flight as soon as possible!

  6. Even though I'm not a fan of Formula One, nor any other racing sport, I can easily tell there is much more to it then "guys driving around" ;) I think there is a lot of skill involved and additionally huge part of the success of the driver depends also on his engineers etc.
I'm not that much into watching sporting events, if I would have to pick one I would say either freestyle snowboarding or skateboarding, because it amazes me what an incredible tricks people can do.

  7. I think that these people share a common passion. Kubica, despite the accident and the deformed hand, did not give up Formula I and I admire it very much. His perseverance in pursuing the goal, despite great hardships. I am not a fan of racing myself, but recently I turned to watching MMA fights.

    1. Kubica is a great man and will always remain an icon of this sport, especially in Poland.

  8. Currently, Formula One is a race of engineers. It's cars that win races. Drivers, despite their high level, are just an addition to the car. Any sport can be interesting if you take the time to learn about the nuances that govern it (even Curling).
Recently, I had the pleasure to watch the CS-GO tournament relation. I could not help wondering when I heard sports commentators discussing the game. I felt like I was living outside of civilization for the last 10 years.

    1. I agree with the fact that drivers become an addition to cars. Personally, I would like Formula One to depend more on the driver's skills, as it used to be in the past.

  9. There is much more than only drivers, like in every sport. For success of one driver whole crew work really hard, e.g. engineers and designers who work to make bolide faster and smoother. I think that’s the main factor that let driver win the race. You mentioned about Niki Lauda, I’m not fan of Formula One, but I’ve watched movie “Rush”. It tells story about competition between Niki and James Hunt, I’m sure that you watched it as well :) great movie with race background, I recommend it everyone. But my favorite sport is Basketball and Judo. I prefer sports that technology is not main factor to win.

    1. It's really a great movie, I recommend it to everyone. I know that nothing is equal to judo and basketball for you, but I think that F1 is a wonderful candidate for the 3rd place :)

  10. 1. Do you think that Formula One is more than a group of guys driving around?

I think that Formula One is much more than the bunch of guys driving around. At 1st it's a passion for driving. It so complex issue - physical and mental exercises, physics lessons and much more. On the other hand Queen of races is also a huge business and politic. If you'll have a look on partnerships in F1 you will get that almost every luxury brand and big company have their share.

    2. Are you fans of another racing series?

It's strange because I use to think about myself as a petrolhead but I didn't ever have much interests in rallies but if I have to pick my favourites it would be GROUP B series.

    3. Maybe there is something in the sport you are passionate about that makes it the number one?

As someone mentioned before I'm more into sports that technology it's not such a big issue and I'm a big fan of k1/muay thai. But let's be honest - every sport demand discipline and hard work so fighters as well as professional drivers have to put lot's of effort to become best!

  11. I think that all motosports are something more than group of bunch people driving together. Answering second and last question on my own I love drift racing series. I'm big fan of it and I'd love to try it on my own one day in future but for now I don't have money for such hobby.

    1. I also plan to try drifting! Unfortunately, this is not a cheap hobby and it's hard to find money at a young age.

  12. Do you think that Formula One is more than a group of guys driving around?
Of course. Formula One involve a lot of strategy, research and discovering new technologies. Adjusting the smallest details in cars to provide better outcome. Drivers practising every turn one thousand times to get it perfect to the every millisecond. It's also not only about guys that drive - it's a collective work of hundreds of people.
Are you fans of another racing series?
Yeah, I also like watching Formula E :) The electric one.
Or maybe there is something in the sport you are passionate about that makes it the number one?
Like in every sport - consistency and hard work. That's what is important.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Obviously it's more than a group of dudes driving around. Like with most sports, there is a lot of hard work, passion and money involved. Not to mention all the technical aspects related to creating a good bolide. Personally I don't watch F1 or any other racing series. To truly enjoy F1 I would have to invest a lot of time to actually understand what goes beneath. Controversies, rivalries, strategies and technology. Without those details it is hard for me to get into this sport. I usually get hooked on sports that I practice myself.

  14. Do you think that Formula One is more than a group of guys driving around?
Not at all, it has to be more than that. There is much involved in it for sure.
Are you fans of another racing series?
No, I'm not. I like boxing but not racing :D
Or maybe there is something in the sport you are passionate about that makes it the number one?
I enjoy boxing, recently I saw great fight Anthony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz. There is so much determination involved and will to fight. They don't give up which is I think most important thing in sports.

  15. I have watched bits and pieces of F1 few times, but as much as I like car races I have to say that this is quite boring for me. despite the speed it feels very slow, makes me yawn :) Im much more into WRC and other rally races, or into stock cars street driving.
I find sport quite amusing to watch, although I wouldn't be able to answer what is my number one. I just like the thrill of people battling for their best.

    1. The rallies are amazing. When watching onboards, you can kind of feel how dangerous they are. And in my opinion they are even more dangerous than Formula One.

  16. Formula 1 is primarily teams of people working for success and not just drivers.
The equipment and money count here is very important but even the best driver who has a weak car and bad technical support is not able to win. I used to watch Formula 1 now rarely happens to me, other racing are not interesting. I would love to be on the track myself. I love to drive a car but unfortunately I never had the opportunity to race. Personally, I don't have a freak about any sport. I'm not a fan.

  17. Formula One is definitely more than a group of guys. As most of sports which engaged big money, it is some kind of enterprise or machine with many parts, sometimes unnoticeable, but very important to its work. Drivers are only last link in a long chain. I am not a fan of racing sports, but I am not a fan of any sports at all. I prefer to do sports than to watch them.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yes, of course. Behind drivers there are whole teams working for their success and making sure his machine works perfectly. Also there are people that we don’t see on camera during races such as personal doctors or factories which make spare parts. I enjoy watching any racing competitions. I’m into nascar. But I also watch football matches during huge events such as euro or world cup. But daily I’m not really interested in that.

  19. After reading your article I can state without any hesitation that the Formula One is something more than just a group of people. I really like when such passion can be expressed with a bunch of friends in some manner. I used to watch F1 on Sundays from time to time and sometimes I've also watched Moto GP races. I can not call myself a fan of racing series, but it was quite enjoyable, espiecially when we had our polish representative whose now back in the game. For me the number one sport is an electronic one and that's because of emotions that online games provide on tournaments and on daily basis.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes, it's all about the passion, more than just driving.
I was watching racing series from time to time, mostly because drivers' skills are really impressive for me.
For me that's the main reason of watching sports, passionate about how they can do impossible things as a normal routine.
During watching such sports, it's really motivates me to try something similar someday.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm not really interested in Formula 1 or any other racing sport. I don't watch Formula One races, but I still admire the drivers. I read about the rules they have to follow and the conditions in which they drive. They really have to sacrifice a lot to be at the top. I am a fan of team sports and above all football. Although there is a lot of money (too much) in this sport, it also remains a demanding sport, which gathers many people in front of TVs and in stadiums. And what is more, it connects people. I have played with many people and during the match there are no prejudices or envy, there are two goals and a ball. And that's what makes football number one for me.

    1. You are another football fan, I fully understand it, because I also love it. Don't you think, that it is really sad that in every, even the most beautiful sport, money comes to the fore?

      Delete
    2. Unfortunately, nowadays, money is increasingly affecting one sport or another. And that's right, it's very sad, because often the "magic" of competition is lost and only profit counts.
And that's why I don't watch many matches.

  22. I am not interested at all in Formula On. But when it comes to Robert Kubica, I remembered the sudden change of heart that happened to our prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki – on the tapes recorded in Sowa I Przyjaciele restaurant, he did not want to sponsor Robert Kubica and was even relieved that he had an accident and broke his arm.Luckily Kubica recovered. Our prime minister had to do somehow rescued his reputation and face, and eventually Kubica was sponsored by Orlen (very cynical of Morawiecki, but it is something natural for him) – it in turn raised some questions whether this is OK that Orlen paid so much money for this and whether it paid off

  23. Last year I attended a formula Formula 1 race in Russia, where Louis Hamilton was the winner. The race itself is very loud, but gets monotonic after a while. It is very exhausting for the drivers, after the end of the race they are so tired they cannot even stand straight.

I really liked that there was a lot going on in the area of the race. Lots of shows related to racing or car construction. Before the race the fans are allowed to visit the garages of the drivers and have a peek to how the preparation look like.

The reasons, why I do not like it that much are following, because the drivers are in one team, one of the drivers lets the other one
go first, on team commands. And also the case, that the results depend a lot on the vehicle. A good driver in a bad car will never succeed.
Also very often some drivers are put in teams in exchange for money - large contributions.

I do not think the comeback of Kubica will be very successful, unfortunately as I previously mentioned a driver is very dependant on the car in this sport, without a good one he we can not accomplish too much. However I do hope, that this sudden rise in interested in this sport could result in building a racing track in Poland, and one day will would also have races in our country.

  24. I am not into sports, so I can't say anything about F1. But among other sports F1 is probably the most boring for me. I don't know if it even supposed to be called sport, because it is mostly about the vehicle characteristics than human skills. For example you can't win a F1 race on a Volkswagen Beetle even if you are the best driver in the world, but you can outplay someone in basketball in ballet clothing if you are good enough. Maybe I am wrong, but that is my opinion.

  25. 1. I'm big fan of Formula 1! I think that's fantastic sport, with a lot of adrenaline and tension.
    2. I sometimes like to see a Nascar, but the formula is number one for me.
    3. I like to watch tennis and table tennis.I play in a table tennis club too.
