Week 2 [28.03-03.04.2016] A coconut tree – a tree of life

I had never liked the taste of coconut. Coconut cookies, Rafaello, Bounty ..they hadn’t been  for me  until I went to Thailand. In Thailand, the first time I tried the coconut straight from the palm trees. Young coconut is green and  in the middle is coconut water . I tried coconut water straight from the coconut , and since then it has been my favorite drink and I love dishes with coconut flavor. Mm …let's start from the beginning.

A brief history of the coconut trees ...
In the sixteenth century, Spanish explorers during their expedition in Asia discovered a remarkable tree . The coconut palm is slender , with long feathery leaves. Coconut fruit has a shape of large spheres covered with a hard shell .
Spanish explorers called the fruit of palmtrees – coco. Brown, rough fleece and three holes on the tip reminded them thehead of a monkey.

Coconuts are inscribed in medical and culinary tradition of South and Central America,
Africa, India , Micronesia , Melanesia and Polynesia and most  regions of Asia
(a third of Earth's population! ) The use of the coconut tree is irreplaceable starting with
the construction of houses   and finishing with   kitchen utensils . Let's start with the
construction of houses in  Philippines , it is a wooden or bamboo house covered with
palm leaves. Coconuts are used askindling for the grill(coconut shell), in the cosmetics
industry as well and household. Coconut nutrition properties are widely known today.

The coconut palm is a tree  which provides us with the PULP , JUICE , MILK and OIL .

Coconut Oil

Particularly valuable is coconut oil : fatty substance extruded with white flesh coconut.
For the population of some regions of the world (for example - the islands of the South Pacific)
it is the main source of fat. But in countries that know it for hundreds of years , it is also
a source of healing drugs. Beneficial effects of coconuts were already described
in Ayurveda 1500 years  BC. Pacific Islanders call it " a cure for all diseases " and coconut
palm - " tree of life" . In traditional medicine, coconut oil is used to treat ulcers , asthma ,
baldness , bruises , coughs, burns, colds , constipation , fever , kidney stones , painful and
irregular periods ,inflammation and ulceration of the skin , syphilis , toothache , and many
other diseases. Coconut oil contains  lauric acid - occurs naturally in large quantities only in
two places - in the coconut and  woman breast milk(lauric acid build baby's resistance).
Coconut oil contains natural antioxidants that remove free radicals, slowing the aging
process  of the skin, making  it firm and elastic.  Coconut oil is used internally as well as
for external use.

Coconut Juice (Coconut Water)

Coconut water is a drink which is extracted from young green coconut fruit  (unlike coconut milk , which are obtained from the extraction of grease from the coconut pulp ) . Tree takes from the ground necessary  (for the growth)clean water, rich in minerals. Coconut water is rich in essential components of the human body , such as magnesium , potassium, calcium, phosphorus , and vitamins B1 , B2 , B3 , B5, B6, C , and electrolytes is almost the same as in the human blood plasma !

During World War II doctors saved the lives of wounded soldiers giving them sterile water directly from young coconuts !

Coconut Milk

Coconut milk is a popular component of food, especially Thai and Indian cuisine. People suffering from intolerance to cow milk often drink coconut milk. We can also use coco milk as:

- An addition to sauces, curry type dishes, sauces, desserts, yoghurt
- In addition to coffee instead of cow's milk
- During a bath  -  rub the skin – it’s a beautiful fragrance and skin care.
- Used as a lotion for the face, body lotion or hair mask.

The main vitamins in coconut milk are vitamins C, E and some B vitamins.
In addition to these vitamins, containing coconut milk diet also provides other essential nutrients, such as iron, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium. Iron is integral in the production of erythrocytes, or red blood cells to carry oxygen to the distribution. Magnesium is linked to several biochemical processes, such as nerve cell function and regulation of heart rate. Bones and teeth are reaping the benefits of a good amount of phosphorus. Finally, the potassium is an essential nutrient for the maintain tissue located in major organs in the body such as the brain, kidney and heart.

As you can see, the coconut has many uses. Each component of the coconut contains the necessary ingredients that you can use to improve your health. The popularity of coconut oil is growing increasingly, but remember to buy only oil unrefined. Only cold-pressed coconut oil retains all the properties. When you buy coconut water in a supermarket , check the ingredients - it must be just pure coconut water (with no sugar or preservatives ). Enjoy!

Questions:
1. Do you use coconut oil ? If yes, for what purpose ?
2. Have you ever drunk coconut water? If yes, do you like the taste of coconut water ?
3. Do you know other products made from a coconut?
4. Do you have a favorite dish containing coconuts  ?

Week 2 [28.03-03.04.2016] This War of Mine

Those who have already recognized the title know what my presentation will be about. Others in the next few paragraphs will find out what I’m doing in my spare time (or to be more precise: how I spend every single second of my free time). Enjoy!

I am very glad to tell you today about the most amazing game I’ve played recently. This War of Mine is a strategy game which is set in the reality of contemporary war but unlike similar games, in this one you won’t be playing as a well-equipped, athletic soldier. Your task is to lead a group of ordinary civilians, who are completely shocked, terrified and unprepared for this war.

A Polish game developer, 11 bit studios, prepared their product for almost every platform: a console, PC, even for Android and iOS mobile operating system. The versions of the game can slightly differ from each other so to keep my presentation consistent I will focus on the version for the Android system. The second reason is that I’m actually playing it on my smartphone so with this version I’m the most familiar.

CHARACTERS

When you start the game for the first time, you will get few people to control. You will also have a chance to read about their stories. That makes you stop thinking about them as some characters and start remembering them as Marko, a firefighter, Pavle, a football player who is missing his wife and a son, and Bruno, a chef who has his own TV show. There are 12 characters altogether and after your first game, you can choose with which team you would like to play next. Each character has its special ability, which you can use during the game. For instance, Bruno can cook meals using less resources than others and Marin, who used to be an owner of a workshop, can craft items with less material Besides special abilities, each of them has different statistics (like speed of running, capacity of inventory), tolerances (how fast he gets sad or sick) and addictions ( coffee, cigarettes). You have to keep in mind all of them to make the best choices for particular tasks.

CHARACTERS STATES

There are 6 categories of character states which reflect their health. These are mood, hunger, wounds, illness, tiredness and sleep. As a player, you need to manage and properly care about them to keep your people alive. Each of the states has a few levels (e. g for mood it will be content, normal, sad, depressed, broken) and reaching the last of it (it means the worst) it usually doesn’t end up well for the character. Each of the states can be affected by different actions or choices that your character (or any other character from the team) makes. What is more, some of them can even affect others. Let’s say your character is wounded. The most effective way to heal him is to use bandages, but of course this is war and the bandages are priceless and hard to find. So instead of it, you can feed you character well (so fulfill the hunger state) or make him sleep in a bed (which also affects tiredness). As I said before, each character can be more or less durable but it’s almost impossible to keep all states in the best conditions. During the game you usually try to balance between the middle levels, avoiding reaching the last of it.

DAY AFTER DAY

The whole game is divided into, let’s say, rounds. Each round consists of a daytime and a night. During the daytime you can interact with all of your characters. You can feed them, cheer up, patch up if wounded but mostly you will give them tasks to make some improvements to the shelter. At the beginning you can build some basic equipment like beds or chairs but you will quickly notice that it’s not enough to survive. After an upgrade, you will gain far more possibilities like building a water collector, a trap for small animals or even a metal workshop in which you can craft some weapons and tools. But don’t forget that building these things costs. A lot. So, how to get all needed materials? There are a few ways to do that. One of them is trading. It’s the easiest and the safest way to gain what you need but you have to give something else in return. And from my experience trading costs way too much and it’s better to use it as a last resort. Another way to gain some resources is to scavenge and for this activity nights are indented. Every night you can choose one of your characters to go to another location and look for supplies. But it isn’t that easy as it sounds. Before you go, you have to think carefully what you need the most at this moment. Some locations may not have the exact things you need. Another thing is making choices. Do I need this wood or should I bring some water instead? Your character’s inventory is limited and you can’t take everything at once. But it’s not the end. There are much harder and unpleasant decisions to make like robbing other people, stealing from hospitals or even killing. You can do all of it just to stay alive in these tough times.

IS IT WORTH PLAYING?

In my opinion This War of Mine’s definitely worth playing but keep in mind that this isn’t just another time-killing game. When I play it, I sit with a pen and note the exact amount of material I need to bring every night to survive another round. You have to be focused so if you are looking for a game which you can play while waiting for a bus, this one isn’t for you.

After my explanation it may sounds like a very complicated game but trust me, it’s not. The mechanic of the game is quite natural so all choices have their reasonable effects, which could happen in the real world. The atmosphere of this game can be a little bit overwhelming or even depressing. That’s not only thanks to brilliant graphics or realistic scenarios but also music. I strongly recommend playing This War of Mine with headphones.

I know that probably my words can’t describe all aspects and small details of this game but if you feel just a little bit curious you can watch some videos below:

In the moment of writing this presentation there is a huge discount for the PC and mobile versions of This War of Mine so if you would like to try it by yourself I think now it’s the best time.

and for PC:

Thanks for reading. Leave your comments and thoughts about This War of Mine or any other game that made such a huge impression on you like this game did on me.

Week 2 [28.03-03.04.2016] AC/DC Beginning of the end?

Beginning of the end?

1. The Band

Thunderstruck, Highway to Hell, Back in Black, T.N.T. - those songs are only a small part of  a rock legend known as AC/DC  – an Australian hard rock band formed in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Margaret, a sister of the founder, had a strong impact on it. The name of the band was her idea- taken from a vacuum cleaner (Alternating Current / Direct Current).
In 1975 was released their first album - High Voltage. They sold over 200 million albums worldwide. Last thing which I wanted to mention before telling more about its current members was a change of a lead singer after Bon Scott’s death in 1980 when band members had two options: disbanding or trying to find a new lead singer. And that's how Brian Johnson became a part of AC/DC. If you want to compare voices of those two great singers, I recommend checking this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxnIHK0FXU8.

2. Current members

http://www.acdc.com/

From the left:
Angus Young - guitar (1973 - now)
Cliff Williams - bass (1978 - now)
Brian Johnson  - vocals (1980 - now?)
Stevie Young - guitar (2014 - now)
Chris Slade - drums (1989-1994, 2015 - now)

3. Ten tracks which I would like to recommend

List of songs which in my opinion are good:

1. Shoot to Thrill
2. Back in Black
3. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
4. Thunderstruck
5. High Voltage
6. Rock 'n' Roll Train
7. Hells Bells
8. You Shook Me All Night Long
9. T.N.T.
10. Highway to Hell
* For Those About to Rock (We Salute You) - if you want to see how it looked like in Warsaw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGUmg0nHrnk

*Yes, I know - ten songs... Let's say that the last one is like an encore ;)

4. Controversies (last 2 years)

Malcolm Young
Its co-founder and former guitarist, who  has been suffering from dementia and had a lung and heart surgery, was forced to retire in 2014 after 41 years of playing. He was replaced by his nephew - Stevie.

Phil Rudd
A former drummer was arrested for attempting to procure a murder, threatening to kill and the possession of marijuana and methamphetamine (the murder-procurement charge was dropped due to insufficient evidence) he was sentenced to 8 months of house detention and rehabilitation program during Rock or Bust World Tour. Fortunately, Chris Slade replaced him quite well.

Brian Johnson
Brian Johnson is... Brian Johnson - front man and vocal of  AC/DC. Because of his hearing issues, AC/DC US tour has been canceled. There are some rumors about "firing" Brian from the band and attempts to find a replacement but for now they are not confirmed.

5. My feelings about the future and experience from the past

Well, I can only hope that Brian Johnson will recover fast and the band will resume its US tour and they won't abandon Brian (I'm waiting for the confirmed information impatiently).
Being a part of their concert is worth every price. I won't forget their show in Warsaw: atmosphere was really cool, there were many "artifacts" associated with songs (i.e. bell (Hells Bells), doll (Whole Lotta Rosie), cannons (For Those About to Rock)). Emotions during the concert were so strong that my friend lost his glasses at the very beginning :)

Questions:
1. What type of music do you like (rock maybe ;))?
2. Do you know some covers which are in your opinion better than original songs (any examples)?
