Week 6 [16.12.19 - 22.12.19] Is social media hurting our mental health?

One can hear many opinions about the impact of frequent usage of social media on mental health. But is it the truth? Maybe these are just unsubstantiated rumors spread by frustrated people having no friends? It today’s article I will try to answer this question.

Have you ever experienced, so-called, phantom vibration syndrome? It happens when you think you received a notification but in reality, nothing happened. Nevertheless, you are incessantly checking your phone waiting for dopamine to be released. Numerous studies from the US, Canada and the UK have linked high social media use with anxiety, stress, and depression. The sad thing is that almost everyone I know uses social media extensively. According to Bailey Parnell, the social media expert, four of the most common stressors on social media are:
  • Highlight reel
  • Social currency (e.g. likes, comments, and shares)
  • F.O.M.O. (Fear Of Missing Out)
  • Online harassment
If they get out of control they can become serious mental health issues.

The highlight reel is a collection of the brightest moments of our lives. Steven Furtick, the New York Times best-selling author, once said "we struggle with insecurity because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel".

Social currency means that we associate our self-worth with what others think about us. Have you ever deleted a photo or post just because it didn’t take as many likes as you supposed? Or maybe you took a hundred photos to be sure that you will choose this one, the best shot. If so, don’t worry. It’s natural for humans to seek approval. The worst thing is that by using social media we become a product because we let others attribute value to us in the form of social currency.

F.O.M.O. is the fear that you can lose something, for instance, an event, opportunity or any other piece of information. A study at a university in Canada showed that seven out of ten students would delete their social media accounts if it were not for fear of being left out of the loop.

Online harassment is the worst stressor in social media. It doesn’t have to be a huge issue like the one we can see on the front pages of every paper. It can be as trivial as compromising photo sent on Snapchat to a friend that then sent it to someone else.

After reading this article, you may think that I recommend deleting accounts on all social media platforms, but that’s not the point. In today’s world abstinence is not an option, but you can use it in the ‘safe’ way. For instance, if celebrities make you feel worse because you don’t have all these things they do, you can unfollow them. Or maybe you feel you just spend too much time scrolling the Facebook wall. There are loads of apps that can help you break the social media addiction. These platforms are very powerful and can bring a lot of value to our lives, but it is important to be aware of all of their threats and not to lose control.

  1. How much time do you spend every day using social media?
  2. Have you ever experienced phantom vibration syndrome?
  3. Are you planning to take a break from social media?

Week 6 [16.12.19 - 22.12.19] Digital Clothing

DIGITAL CLOTHING

Current age is full of amazing inventions, we have privilege of seeing transformation in the field of computer science that come in to contact with everyday life on every greater scale. There are countless areas of use but one that I'm most interested in is entertainment business. By the use of this presentation I would like to share with you one of many softwares that today industry apply in order to create such high quality products.

Marvelous designer is relatively young program that specialize in creating digital clothes. This software allows users for creating patterns of their choice almost the same way like traditional tailor offered but in this case all tools are replaced by average computer mouse. You can cut, sew, adjust, design to your heart content and when you are ready Marvelous provides you with high quality simulation of garment that appears on model of your choice. You can switch beetwen different types of materials and details, moreover, you can upload poses for model you provided to check how clothes look whenever you are slouch or stand upright. Game and film industry use this program to make base that it's afterwards send to another software in order to push digital clothes even further and create highly detailed models you can see in triple A and big-budget products that cannot be distinguish between the real live garment we see everyday.

Fashion industry also pay attention to this software. There are first designers that experiments with digital clothing and even sell products that doesn't exist in real life, once you can only wear them in virtual reality. This field is yet evolving but imagine that in the future you could upload your body scan on website and see what clothes suits you best. Of course there is always unknown factor but possibilities to check how new hoodie from overseas looks on you seems fun.

1. Do you use any software for work? Do you imagine work with out it?
2. How do you find idea of closing conventional clothing shops for highly advance web sites that could simulates garments of your choice?
3. Did you ever wonder how clothes made for special effects scenes were made or try to catch the moment in movie when they replace real once?

Week 6 [ 16.12 - 22.12 ] Inspiration by music videos

I`m a big fan of music videos. I`m trying to be up to date with the latest trends in this field. I admire video production and post-production, so I like to analyze different visions of music video makers. For me every music video is a dose of inspiration, because it is a new short story from the beginning to the end with culture, philosophy, trends, social problems or truth about the politics.
Music videos could be worse or better but it's a vision of one or a few people and it deserves respect. Video makers could show who they are and what really matters for them.
One of the music videos that impressed me a lot  is “Up&Up” by Coldplay.
The video shows simple daily things in a beautiful way. The four-minute video turned out to be very surreal. Incredible things appear in rapidly changing frames: football players play a kitchen sponge, popcorn breaks out of a volcano, the Titanic sails in the bath, and a huge butterfly sits on a ship. The Coldplay music video is like a kaleidoscope. You can watch it forever and discover something new each time.
Speaking of views - on YouTube, the video scored about 180 million  views by now.

Every single time I watch this video I feel inspiration and motivation to do something bigger.

Another music video that inspire me is “Vremia I Steklo – Back2Leto”.
“Vremya I Steklo” is a very popular band from Ukraine, which consists of a girl named Nadia Dorofeeva and her colleague Oleksij "Pozitif" Zavgorodni.
The Back2Leto video was recorded within two days, but the pre-production and post-production stages are definitely more important in this case.
The main task in this music video was to learn how to sing and dance this song at twice as slow  pace as it is in the original. This was done so that  the recorded material could be accelerated twice during editing, and Nadia's moves and lips moved at a normal pace. At the same time, her partner Oleksij had to learn the words of the song backwards. The shots in which Oleksij was were inverted so that he moved the opposite way, but the lips moved normally.
This music video is so dynamic and visually saturated that the viewer cannot always pick all special effects used. The director of the video managed to put there 15 different special effect techniques including Matte painting, Chrome key, Rotoscoping, 2D CGI, 3D CGI, Bullet time, cartoon animation and many more in 226 seconds.

The “Back2Leto” music video is a good example of the fact that a great number of special effects help music creators add color to their songs.

I strongly recommend  watching these two music videos!

-          What was the thing that inspired you the most?  What inspires you every day?

-          Which music video has made  lifetime impression on you?

-          What music video would you recommend  watching?

-          What do you think about music videos “Coldplay – Up&Up” and “Vremia I Steklo – Back2Leto”?

Thank you for your attention. Waiting for your opinions.

Week 5 [02.12 - 08.12] Future of mobile apps

For last couple years there was a huge breakthrough concerning usage of smartphones on our daily basis. 10 years ago phones with touchscreens were gadgets that mostly tech freaks were interested in having them, right now it’s hard to imagine life without phone which helps us to schedule a week, make a call, record a nice vacation video or even replace a gaming console. By looking at current mobile market we can say that future is finally now. Mobile phones have better parameters than our computers few years ago. One of breakthroughs in this area is that smartphones are now supporting bluetooth gaming controllers. What means that there are games that being developed for playing games on mobiles which are using such devices. This takes mobile gaming to the whole new level. Few years ago we’ve had games like angry birds or simple clickers and today we can have almost the same user experience as playing on xbox or playstation. On market we can find few companies that are filling new niches in this field. They’re creating dedicated smartphone gaming controller for even better experience and to improve ergonomics. Right now we can forget that it is still our phone, not remote console. (Maybe until we see incoming call from our parents).

But there was also huge breakthrough in area of software development for mobile phones. Earlier we just had one option, to write in native programming language for each platform but right now we have plenty of option and almost everyone can develop simple mobile applications without need for employing whole team of mobile developers.
Google and Facebook introduced for us two great technologies for creating such apps.
Facebook created something called React Native, what basically can be created using web development programming languages which are compiling to native platform language and such software we can deploy straight to play store or app store.
What’s even more interesting google made another breakthrough in development across all platforms, I mean every platform that can use google chrome as browser. They’re supporting technology called Progressive Web Application, which means that after we write for example page for some events, internet game or even apps like some kind of calculators, they all can be installed on computers, mobile phones etc. without need for downloading those apps from play or app store. That’s slowly getting popular and in future it might compete with apps that we’re using today.

How do you think mobile apps will look few years from now?
What do you think about moving gaming experience to mobile phones?
Do you think that new style of development might replace the old one?
