  1. Very interesting and useful article. I've never heard of polyphasic sleep. I head about different phases in our sleep cycle but that is a different thing.

Some time ago i have bought a fit band (mainly for vibrating alarm) and it also monitors my sleep phases based on my heart rate. I learned that usually i have longer deep sleep phase than 80% of people despite having total sleep time shorter than 20%. Because of my job i have to adjust my sleep time often. There are periods when i have to be at work at 5AM for 3 months straight and then 3 weeks of regular 9-5 work.

Personally i think i'd be exhausted and could not focus on anything, but i have never tried it, my only experience is pulling all-nighters sometime in the past and i know i was like a zombie.

    1. Is your fit band equipped with possibility to induct so called lucid dreams?

    2. Nope, its just a simple Miband2. It monitors phase of sleep, heart rate, steps and "calories". I bought it mainly for the vibrating alarm to not wake my GF when i need to get up at 5AM :)

  2. Have you ever heard about polyphasic sleep schedules?
    - Yes, I have heard about various sleeping patterns. I have read book about habits of great minds like Albert Einstein or Maria Curie-Skłodowska and among other habits polyphasic sleep was often one of them.

Did you try switching your sleep schedule, or at least changing your sleep time?
    - I didn't try such a thing. I'd like to have an opportunity to give it a test run, but it's not possible for me currently as I'm not able to take a nap during working hours.

Do you personally think it is possible for a normal man to sleep as little as 3 hours per day?
    - In my opinion 3 hours is not enough even with polyphasic sleep. I guess itereative sleep during day is far better designed for sleeping as short as 3 hours, but after certain time I bet your performance would be worse comapring to normal longer sleep time.

  3. I heard already about polyphasic sleep schedules. Supposedly Leonardo Davinci himself have been sleeping very little time and taking few hours brakes between few hours naps.
I was trying different sleep schedules also. Some of them were purposeful experiments, but some of them were side effect of unslept nights of studying before exams. From my experience and additional knowledge gained from various science sources I have to deny some methods described in the article. There is no possibility to sleep less than about six hours a day for longer time, without exacting a toll on our health. It is because every sleep consists from a few sleep phases and human brain needs at least few of them to regenerate, what takes about six hours of sleep. Though it is interesting that there are people claiming they sleep about 4 hours per day and have never felt healthier before. This is tough nut to crack for science still. Anyway for me it is still far dispute as I like and need to sleep at least 8 hours per day :) But if I could set up for better sleep schedule and not to feel exhausted because of it, it would be really really great.
But one more thing. After about six hours of sleep people start to dream most complex dreams, which are the most probable to remember. To give up on these would be a pity...

  4. Apart of the subject... did anyone heard of lucid dreaming? ;)

  5. I heard about polyphasic sleep schedules for some people like Da Vinci. He did something similar to Uberman. That's why he can be full effective for up to 20hours a day that's why he's a genius.
I never try to change my sleep patterns for my sleep lifestyle. Only change which I introduce is the hour of going to sleep at night.
For me it's possible, even in my surrounding there some people who don't sleep so long. I know from them that it really works. They sleep lest at night but in the day time always find some nap time.
Because I'm student and working it's almost impossible to find nap during the week days.

  6. Have you ever heard about polyphasic sleep schedules?
Yes, I've heard about polyphahsic sleep schedules but I was never interested in this topic more widely.

Did you try switching your sleep schedule, or at least changing your sleep time?
Sometimes I don't sleep much at night and then I'm not able to sleep during the day to feel well-rested.
After those such tough nights my body regenerates for a long time. However I usually try to sleep regularly around 6-7 hours.

Do you personally think it is possible for a normal man to sleep as little as 3 hours per day?
In my opinion, 3 hours is not enough. If someone works in the same room where he can take naps and adjust them to the rhythm
of the day, possibly he will feel good, but in a situation when we only sleep 3 hours, we are exposed to be tired and improper functioning of the body.

  7. No I haven’t heard about polyphasic sleep schedule. From time to time I hear people who want to sleep less. No I know what I’ll say to them. Personally I don’t understand people motivation when they try to sleep less to work more or even do something more relaxing. I’m really confused whether polyphasic sleep schedules could help anybody. It sounds really strange. It’s not good idea see improvements in time of sleeping because it could be dangerous. We should be determined enough to keep ourself stay with the program and it’s not so easy. Especially when most of us lives in different way. There is no place for optimise human being lives. Instead of changing sleep schedule it’s better idea try to eat healthier. That’s a big problem nowadays. I’m a big fun of sleeping. For me it’s quite normal to sleep 7 hours per day in minimum. Once, I tried to change it and sleep for 6 hours but I was exhausted after all day and I felt strange just before get to bed. It’s not possible to sleep 3 hours per day. It could be the truth if we are talking about short terms. In short I mean 1 week and no more. I’m agree every case is different and we are varied as a one single guy here. To sum up, I don’t believe it’s possible to sleep less than 7 hours per day.

  8. - Have you ever heard about polyphasic sleep schedules?
    - Yes, when I first heard about it, I was amazed. The possibility that you can "hack" your body to sleep as little as 3-4hours and still be well rested is incredible. It's that kind of thing you see in SF media.

    - Did you try switching your sleep schedule, or at least changing your sleep time?
    - I never changed my sleep schedule to extreme point shown in the article. Usually I take 1,5-2h nap, which allows me to sleep much shorter at night.

    - Do you personally think it is possible for a normal man to sleep as little as 3 hours per day?
    - It's hard for me to say. I have doubts that the human body can fully regenerate in such extremely short time. Possibility of nearly 20h daily for you to have in your hands is enticing. But it can have long term effects on one's body.

  9. I’ve already heard about polyphasic sleep schedules from my friend who starts his work at 3am. He just doesn’t have any choice, otherwise he could get crazy without reasonably plan of sleeping. But personally, I think that it’s all depends on person. In my case when I have regular work hours and avoiding overtime or working at home I think that sleeping regularly for 6-7 hours is better. I’m getting up simultaneously with alarm and don’t feel sleepy until I have what to do. But when I sleep less than that my day is ruined so I think that is impossible to sleep 3 hours per day without long term consequences.

  10. I have never heard of polyphasic plans of a dream. The lenght and quality of a dream is very important for me. If I am sleepy, my workforce productivity significantly decreases. I have to spend much more time to analyze the code and error correction. I really like the ideas for a dream presented in this paper. I think if it was possible to stick to the original plan, my work would be more productive. However, I am not able to adjust my responsibilities to sleeping. This relation looks completely different. The responsibilities decide when I can sleep.

  11. It is obvious that being sleepless we are less productive. So we should sleep well, but sometimes I haven't got enough time to sleep. The main question is why? This is probably because I try too much to do per one day. The solution should be simple, but it isn't. I've tried even using special phone apps - without any result.
The article shows different approach to the topic. The sleep should be divided. I've never tried to do it, because it is hard to do. I can't sleep at work :)
PS. I've heard that Da Vinci slept 15 minutes for every 2 hours work.

  12. I think that the most important knowledge about sleeping is regular cycles. I usually sleep only 5-6 hours. I feel good, but in only one night if sleep more or less than 5-6 hours I feel very badly for next few days. I would like to reduce my sleeping time to average than less 5 hours.

Do you heard about polish app for sleeping monitoring - Nightly ? They have obtained a lot of money from investors. They created app with many sleep scientists. This is sound great, but I did not usage of this type of applications.

  13. I havent heard about polyphasic sleep schedules till now. I don't think it would fit me. I had my time working on shifts and with this experience I could get some observations. To sleep enough time I had to change my sleep schedule often and it's quite uncomfortable and I don't think it's healthy. I try to sleep as much as 8 hours a day. And I think it's an optimal period of time for me. I've heard there are people who do well sleeping 6 or even less hours a day.. and if it fits them I think it's ok.

  14. I never before heard about polyphasic sleep. I don't have opinion about this thing. Maybe for some people it is good, but i prefer traditional method of sleeping. Based on my experience I noticed that the most optimally I sleep from between 23 to 7 in the morning. If i sleep less than 6 hours i feel tired and in a slower moment I sleep more than 10 hours. Sleeping is something that relaxes me.

  15. Have you ever heard about polyphasic sleep schedules?

Yes, I have heard about polyphasic sleep schedules. Just as my colleagues mentioned before me, I read about it mainly in the context of famous people who did it. However, I treat it mainly as a curiosity so-called 'urban legends'.

Did you try switching your sleep schedule, or at least changing your sleep time?

I did not try to change the sleeping time especially. Every day hours we go to sleep are dictated by our work. Only when I travel I prefer to get up early to make the most of my time.

Do you personally think it is possible for a normal man to sleep as little as 3 hours per day?

Maybe theoretically and physically it is possible, but so many naps during the day would beat me out of the rhythm of work, so objectively I would lose more time to force me to do whatever I did after each nap.

  17. Yes, I heard about polyphasic sleep schedules. I watched a television program about this subject. There are six types of polyphasic sleep schedules: Monophasic, Biphasic, Everyman, Dymaxion, Uberman and Chase. The first two are the most popular.

Due to my professional life, I have not tried switching my sleep schedule. I tried only changing my sleep time. During my life I got up both - very early in the morning and very late. My organism is in the best condition when I go to bed at midnight and sleep until 8 AM.

I think it is possible for an adult to sleep only 3 hours during the day. However, it is very dangerous to health and can lead to many serious diseases. Adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep during the day. When we do not have this assured, learning, memorizing, mood and reaction time are disturbed. Lack of sleep may also cause inflammation, hallucinations, and high blood pressure. It even has a connnection with diabetes or being overweight. Chronic sleep deprivation less than 6 hours a day increases the risk of stroke four times.

  18. I have never heard about polyphasic sleep schedules. I had no idea this was a thing, but it seems I've tried at least two of them in the last two years.
I like the siesta idea and personally think that it works well. I do it sometimes preparing for the exams and noticed that it improves my productivity and concentration.
The other schedule I was using was similar to the Uberman. This one works, as well, but it's hard and exhausting. You can work, learn, accomplish a lot in the hardest of times but it's impossible to keep the schedule for long.

I think it's possible for a normal man to sleep as little as 3 hours per day but I'm sure it's not healthy. I wouldn't recommend that. From my experience, it causes big difficulty concentrating and reduces the body's immunity.

  19. First of all I just wanted to say that this is a great and very informative article! As for your questions here are my answers.

Have you ever heard about polyphasic sleep schedules?
No, I haven't heard of it. I really like this idea since it can boost our productivity and give us so many extra hours everyday. Unfortunately extreme versions like uberman seems really hard to apply in our daily life.

Did you try switching your sleep schedule, or at least changing your sleep time?
I don't really have a sleep schedule. Sometimes I find myself binge-watching a TV series until 3am and the next week I am going to sleep at 10pm. The only rule I follow is at least 7 hours of rest.

Do you personally think it is possible for a normal man to sleep as little as 3 hours per day?
I am a little skeptical about this theory. 3 hours seems like unreasonably short amount of time for human body and mind to regenerate. I wonder how such lifestyle would impact our health in the long run.
