Week 6 [01-07.06.20] Why are video clip so important for the music world?

Why are video clip so important for the music world? 🎬

In the current reality of the music industry, the song itself, even the best and most catchy, is not all. The song needs to complete the image, not just because in this way, by combining sound with visualization, something new arises, but also for more mundane reasons: there is no better way to fall into the imagination of the listeners. Just to mention songs such as:

Chaka Khan - Like Sugar

or Bass astral x Igo - Feeling exactly

to convince you that sometimes a music video can mean a lot more than just the song itself.

However, let's start from the beginning. A breakthrough moment was  August 1, 1981, when the MTV station was created. It’s motto was: "Music TV, the first large telecommunications medium combining the power of stereo sound with the visual effect of TV. (...) The first purely musical channel broadcasting 24 hours a day via satellite. Artistic video recordings of a modern artists will be played. These recordings are more than just a record of a bands singing and playing . It's highly stylized visual interpretations of music using the most advanced video techniques. "
And although in the early days there were still blackouts, when the operator inserted another VHS cassette into the player, and the first music videos were not particularly successful, the revolution began ... A completely new type of recipient was created, who no longer wants to listen, but also to watch. Artists began to reach people not only through the sense of hearing, but also through the sense of seeing. The music video is loose enough to be limited only by your imagination! Isn't that wonderful?

Nowadays, there are no hardware restrictions, that's why anyone can make a music video. A lot more clips are made, but the percentage of good ones remains the same. A lot of artists record a clip just to make it happen, but it’s not a good approach. In Poland, unfortunately, this is still an underinvested field of art. Budgets range from zero to a million zlotys. But these are really isolated cases.

In fact, it doesn't matter how much you spend on the music video and what it records.
The most important is the idea and creativity. Thanks to this, we can attract the attention of the viewer
and even make us love a given song through the video clip. It happened to me more than once.

Tell me:
  1. Do you have any of your favorite video clip?
  2. What do you think about video clips in these days?
  3. If you had a band what would your dream video clip be? ⭐️

  1. I loooove video clips! 💙
I think that they are a great form complementing the music and give the artist the opportunity for greater expression. It's hard for me to say which my favorite clip of all time is, because I'm trying to look for new sounds and styles of music. However, I think that very interesting film productions for music are created by the French team Suzie and Leo - you can check their works on www.suzieandleo.com

I have to admit that older clips get my heart much easier and I often come back to them. I adore the aesthetics of old music recordings and it's very hard to convince me to contemporary art forms, hahah. Below my beloved clip for Friday I’m in Love by The Cure:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGgMZpGYiy8

I don't have a band (unfortunately!), but music is very important part of my life and I recorded a few songs, creating amateur music videos for them. I don't think I have the dream clip, because when I create, I dedicate the video to a specific song. If I had an unlimited budget, I would definitely take care of interesting scenery and clothes. đŸ€©

    1. I also love old music videos! Older video clips have a wonderful atmosphere, even those kitschy, e.g. the first Michael Jackson music video. The rock bands were not afraid to experiment with the appearance and it was great. The Cure is definitely my vibe. The Kiss band also had good outfits. :D

  2. Currently, in the Spotify era I rarely watch music videos. But in the past I was very up to date with the latest in the music market. I liked animated Gorillaz clips - do you know them?
Now it is difficult for me to tell if I have a favorite clip. I mainly listen to techno. Techno music usually doesn't have clips. On the other hand, techno music is visualized, which is a bit like a music videos. I watched the best visualizations in the Nowa Jerozolima club, which unfortunately does not exist anymore. The Audioriver Festival also does cool visualizations. If I had a band I would like to have one like this 😾

    1. I love Gorillaz! 😭💙 Idea for animated characters appear not only in clips, but also at concerts and interviews is iconic! I also think that Daft Punk is visually unique. ✨

    2. Yes! Daft Punk's aesthetics is great too! And their helmets. Do you know anything more like that?

      Delete
    3. Sure 😌

      Slipknot / awesome creepy masks
      Pussy Riot / rainbow balaclavas
Buckethead / white mask and a hat made from chicken bucket
Wes Borland from Limp Bizkit /
      Jonathan Bree / mannequin man
Sia / bangs covering her whole face
      Orville Peck / masked cowboy
KISS / face paints (also Insane Clown Posse)
      Marshmello / marshmallow helmet
      RMR / black balaclava
Clinic / medical uniforms and face masks
      Lordi / orcs!

and softer versions like Marylin Manson and Fever Ray / makeup or Planningtorock / face transformations

Visualizations can also be called a kind of video clip and this is a very interesting and big topic to talk over beer. đŸ» Zuza, I'm glad you liked the subject so much!

  4. There is one song that makes me shiver, and when I see the video clip there are tears in my eyes. Christina aguilera and the song "Hurt" I could say that this is the saddest song that i heard.

These days I think that the coolest are not video clips but funny videos about what people do on the quartant and how they go crazy. For example, "good morning tvn" shows some humorous videos from viewers every day. The only video clip I saw in the days of the coronavirus is the disco polo "Boys" band, but I don't have a good opinion about it.

If I had a band and recorded my song, I think I would like it to show how it came about and what exactly I meant by write it.

    1. I just watched Christine's video clip and it is really good. It is as wonderful as a video clip harmonizes with the music! I think it had to be a big production and they had a big budget for it :D

  5. Currently I don't have a favorite video clip. I used to have even a few, but it is related to the fact that I watched them. I'm currently listening to music in the application and, as a rule, I don't even know what the band that performs the song looks like. When it comes to favorite clips from the past - I'm afraid that if I saw them again I wouldn't like them so much :)

From what I have observed - except that this is not a thorough observation - they are made for one hoof. They look almost the same, they have almost the same story and in no way relate to the lyrics. I really like the music videos that somehow relate to the lyrics when they illustrate it. Some of the music videos are such that they can be substituted for any song.

It seems to me that my video clip would somehow reflect the content of the song, would be an illustration of it. I would like the music video to reflect the mood of the song well - humorous with a humorous music video, serious with serious. I would like to think about an animated music video which currently gives a lot of possibilities.

  6. Do you have any of your favorite video clip?

I don't have any favourite one because I've never paid attention to watching video-clips so I don't have anything in my mind or what's most common about "favourites" - I don't have any related memories with particular video-clip.

What do you think about video clips in these days?

I think that nowadays clips aren't important at all because most of the people (including me) are using streaming platforms and don't have time or they don't pay enough attention to watch video clips. Golden era of video-clips were when most of the hits was played by MTV or similar tv stations. I think that right now ever youtube is mostly used for listening rather than watching music-related content.

    1. Sorry, but I disagree with your opinion. Video clips create an image for artists.
You aren't watching does not mean that no one is paying attention to it now. An example would be the video clip 'Gangam style' which collected a record number of views.

  7. Do you have any of your favorite video clip?

I'm rather a Spotify-person, so I don't watch video clips. To be honest I haven't seen clips to newest songs which I listen almost every day yet.

What do you think about video clips in these days?

I think that most of video clips have a poor quality - most of them have half-naked women and expencive cars... Of course I'm talking about pop music clips.

If you had a band what would your dream video clip be?

My dream viedo clip would be made in Capri, Italy. There would be a lot of fantasic views that everyone could feel it's atmosphere.

  8. Yes, I got some video clips that I especially like, however one of my favourites I think, is Red Hot Chili Peppers – Otherside. It’s so cool you have to check it out! I think thanks to technology advancement we have, some of the video clips created these days are unusual! Of course only with the professional producer, whose idea of how to implement a given topic is presented in a fascinating way. If I had a band, my dream video clip would probably not differ much from the ones Red Hot Chili Peppers make!

    1. Omg I love Red Hot Chili Peppers 😁 The coolest video clips that have an idea and this is the basis for success. Good direction for your video clip!

  9. I have few favourite video clips but in my top 3 I can mention about Up&Up from Coldplay. Which is abstract mix of different perspectives and colours.
I think that it's hard to say anything about video clips since every artist or band have their own style. Some of videos are innovative, colourful and breathtaking, and some are just monotonous.
I've never been thinking about that. For sure there would be some artistic mentions and cars, but that's all what I have in my head for now.

  10. I don’t have any favourite video clip because I am not watching them for a really long time now. But I love when they are stylised with artistic taste.
To be honest video clips are now mostly girls showing parts of their bodies which is really annoying. I have never thought about creating a video clip and it is really tough to think of it as right now I have no clue.

  11. I don’t have any favorite video clip, but I really like Will Smith - Gettin' Jiggy Wit It and Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc. – classics. There are some new interesting new clips, but there sometimes they are to vulgar and not in a good taste. Last question – I would be a rapper for sure and my dream clip will be in some dark place e.g. old warehouse. In background some junks and fire in barrel. Next location at chorus – fight ring like in ufc but street edition. Gambling, cigars, nice ladies and brutal fights. Last location basketball court line in NY city, young players playing basketball at night. Some good lyrics about hard life and never give up. Old-school.

  12. Do you have any of your favorite video clip?

Yes, I think it is the clip to “Clint Eastwood” by Gorillaz. I have always enjoyed their music and the aesthetic of the video clips.

What do you think about video clips in these days?

I think that the production quality of today’s video clips has improved significantly. Because it is such a meaningful factor of song’s popularity you can rarely see a video clip where a band only stands on a stage and sings a song.

If you had a band what would your dream video clip be?

I think it would be more focused on geometric shapes and lasers than on people or nature. And of course in color palette from miami vice

  13. I am myself an avid music fan, however honestly I never paid
that much attention to music videos, I guess the music itself
    is far more important.

I think nowdays the music and video are inferior in a way to older ones. For example the songs have very simple chord patterns, that repeat through the whole song, often in both the verse and chorus. Almost all songs havethe same sound. We often witness big shiny production, that do not have that much beneath them.

My dream music video would be in a town by the sea, but I
cannot think of any further details.

    1. Yes, music is important, but with the video clip they form a whole. Sorry, I will not change my mind. I'm a fan of movies and video clips because I do it. Visual content is also very important to me. They are of lower quality, so you have to choose the best from the top shelf 🙂

  14. When it comes to Polish clips, one of my favorites is "Defto" by Jamal (https://youtu.be/cg2LN05PXUo). Different contrasting snippets are juxtaposed in a pretty impressive way. This makes the listener very involved in the experience.
Current music videos, especially of the well-known bands that have funds for it, are masterpieces of art and technology. Personally, I love watching them.
I don't know what music video I'd like to create if I had a band. Maybe something similar to one of the music videos of the band "Time and Glass" (Russian: Đ’Ń€Đ”ĐŒŃ Đž ĐĄŃ‚Đ”ĐșĐ»ĐŸ). Their music videos are very creative and I love to watch them.

  15. I can't recall any video clip which can be my favourite. I saw many video clips, but for me it was always just a little extra to the song. Nowadays, video clips is very important, because due to YouTube it can be additional income for artists. Every display can increment a counter which means bigger income. I don't know what type of video clip I would like to make, maybe something peaceful including stars and other planet, I don't know... :)

  16. There are many video clips I really like watching from time to time but they are mostly some kind of cool animation. I don't really like live action ones.
I think they are fine. To be honest I don't pay attention to music videos that much so I'm not the one to ask.
I'm not sure but I love watching old Disco-Polo music videos so I believe I'd make some kind of parody of those.

  17. Yeah, I love clips!

My favourite is the clip to song titled No Reason by Bonobo. Directed by Oscar Hudson, production by Pulse Films and
executive producers Sarah Boardman and Matthew Posner. It looks very interesting to tell a story that I couldn't imagine while listening music, when the album was freshly released without clip.

Check and let me know what you think folks:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebzEEEdjHj0

Mhm.. Video clips tell stories other than the author of the song had in mind or are a complement or complement. That's my opinion. Agree or not ;)

I don't think I'm able to answer this specific question :D

    1. Wow! This video clip is really really good! Such video clips should be made đŸ”„.
And I totally agree that video clips should be complementary. Then one increases the value of the other.

  18. I love watching video-clips as a complement to the sound. I don't have my favorite music video, but the last one that impressed me the most is "This is America" by Childish Gambino - thanks to this video I understood the artist's message more clearly. Sometimes video and music supplement each other, but often video is just a good-looking addition to the music and nothing more.
I am currently fascinated by interactive music videos and their possibilities. An interesting interactive video example is Dylans "Like A Rolling Stone" where as a viewer everyone can take a part in creating a clip by switching channels. It was produced and shared a few years ago(http://video.bobdylan.com/).
I think that modern music videos are just as good as the old ones, but now it's more difficult to find the best clips - when there are so many music videos on the internet.

  19. 1. Hmmm… currently I don't have a favorite video clip. Listening to music I don't focus on watching video clips, I focus more on song content. Music often accompanies me at work or cleaning home or cooking, so I don't have time to watch video clips. However, what I like the most are the Mexican music videos and the 1980s clips, and the most brilliant and timeless are the Michel Jackson video clips, which were the first clips in the world and will probably continue to be iconic icons of music and video clips.
    2. In my opinion, video clips are not very different these days. They are full of half-naked women and strange animations. I'm not a critic or an expert, but in my opinion today's clips don't bring anything to our life, they even reject me. Maybe that's why I don't have my favorite video clip :)
    3. Unfortunately, I am not a person who is so interested in music. Forming musical bands is also not my passion and dream. I've never thought about what kind of clip I could create or produce, so unfortunately I won't answer this question.

    ReplyDelete
  20. To be honest, I don't have my favorite clip. In music I focus primarily on it and I hardly watch video clips. I don't deny that many video clips are simply stunning, but I just don't give them much of my attention.
I think it's great that current technology allows to create absolutely everything in video clips. These huge possibilities are also a trap, because beauty often lies in simplicity. I think nowadays the biggest challenge is to balance these two things.
If I had a music band, then probably someone else would make sure that the video clip is the best. I would prefer to focus on music.

  21. I have a lot of favourite video clips but few of those which come to my mind at the moment is "Sledgehammer" of Peter Gabriel, "Gosh" Jamie XX, "In the dark" of Gaslamp Killer, "Wrong" - Depeche Mode and "Single Ladies" of Beyonce for the choreography. Beside, I really like all video clips of Andrew Thomas Huang, he made "Cellophane" of FKA Twigs and some of Bjorks's videos. In general, I like the video clips nowadays and I always enjoy watching creative audiovisual art. I appreciate either when video clip tells a story and I watch it like a movie or when it's a combination of effects and a showcase of the art of editing.

    1. If I ever had an opportunity to make my own video clip it would probably be in some kind of unusual architecture like an old castle or palace. I'd love to show details of the building and decor and probably I'd like to incorporate some wild choreography in the clip aswell.

  22. I dont have my favourite video clip. When it comes to music I dont pay attention to visual effects, I am all ears.
When I see video clips on youtube, one thing comes to my mind. The more stupid video is, the more viewers it has. Sad, but seems to be actual these days. I find creativity and imagination a hard step for me. The only thing coming to my mind about my potential clip is that is has a valuable audible effects. I hope some viewers would just enjoy the musis, just as I do.

  23. I don't know, probably not. Many clips are interesting and creative. Artists spend a lot of money to create something new and different than before. But some of them have a lot of strange effects and looks weird. The best clip I can imagine is made on a tropical island, preferably if it is unknown to many people and it is not a tourist place. This kind of clips makes me feel relaxed and enthusiastic.
