Elon Musk - inventor of PayPal, SpaceX, SolarCity, Tesla, and few more- just last week announced on his Twitter that his latest sports car Tesla Roadster will also be able to hover over the ground!
The new Roadster will actually do something like this https://t.co/fIsTAYa4x8— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) 9 stycznia 2019
Whole automotive world was shocked and mostly skeptical already when Tesla claims that Roadster will be able to reach 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in just 1.9 seconds and will have 640 (1000 km) miles of range. Since the last tweets of company CEO most people treated it as a joke ( c’mon we normally don’t see flying cars over our heads in the streets ) but he hardly deny, explaining that the car will use SpaceX cold gas thruster system located in place of the rear seats. The idea that was being delivered in June 2018 claimed ten small rocket thrusters placed seamlessly around the car which will improve top speed, acceleration, cornering, breaking and “maybe they will even allow Tesla to fly”. And for now on as we can see it escalated quickly.
I’m not. Will use SpaceX cold gas thruster system with ultra high pressure air in a composite over-wrapped pressure vessel in place of the 2 rear seats.— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) 9 stycznia 2019
Let’s be honest- even if we’re talking about just lifting from the ground it’s crazy and still hard to believe. But on the other hand Elon Musk was never joking about any features that previous models of Tesla received- it was always just a matter of release time.
We have to remember that when in the early 2000’s Musk announced that he’s going to build fully electrical car on a mass scale the industry was more than skeptical of his possible success- he did it. The same situation was with space cargo which was totally dominated by the government companies and for now on SpaceX overtake NASA by miles. Hyperloop- crazy idea of fast, public transportation was also the subject of many jokes back in the days but since then we’ve already seen many prototypes and at the end of the last year we’ve seen a real tunnel where the few journalist were invited to test it ( only in Tesla Model X for now ).
Personally I’m a big fan of Elon’s company management and I keep my finger crossed for him to succeed in any coming projects- including hover car!
If anyone would be interested, the new Roadster is expected to be available from 2020, priced from $200,000 but only for the first 1000 buyers. Then the regular price will increase to $250,000.
QUESTIONS:
1. What’s your opinion about hover cars at all?
2. Is it still Sci-Fi or we’re in the middle of breakthrough?
3. Would you consider Elon Musk as a visionary or he’s just trying to get attention for increasing sales?
Feel free to give your opinion and I hope we’ll bring some interesting discussion!

2. Elon Musk Twitter - https://twitter.com/elonmusk
I don’t perceive it as Sci-Fi When I was a child having phone all the time with you was something unbelievable and computer games were on tapes so why not flying cars. For sure Elon Musk tries to get attention, but it doesn’t mean that it is not true. While thinking about those cars I can’t imagine how it would be – waiting in a traffic jam and suddenly the car in front of you lifts, leaving behind all waiting cars. Interesting vision, but I see more risks than advantages. What a mass will be over our heads.
ReplyDeleteI think it's still quite a long way before we'll see cars flying over our heads but I can only assume we won't prevent accidents to happened but it's a part of developing new technologies.
Delete1. I would like to see that. I am very curious about the progress made by other car manufacturers.
ReplyDelete2. I think the world is heading for what we've imagined. There are no restrictions for people anymore. I think we are half way through the breakthrough. It's amazing what progress the man has made.
3. I think that Elon Musk is passionate about pursuing his goals. It's perfect, that with the passage of time, all ideas translate into implementation. And he manages it.
Exactly, dreams without pursuing them are worthless that's one of the issues I admire him for!

ReplyDeleteI think that hover cars would be some kind of a gadget for now, I bet it won't be able to fly higher than few centimeters, so it won't have any practical use, if you are not crazy about tires beign used. People are reading Stanisław Lem's quote from 1961: "The books were crystals with recorded contents. They could be read with the aid of an opton, which was similar to a book but had only one page between the covers. At a touch, successive pages of the text appeared on it." on a Kindle, so it is not a science fiction anymore and same thing could happen with cars. I love the way Elon is acting, if he knows that he can do something, he will do it, no matter what everyone else is saying.
ReplyDeleteThat's the point! Looking at where were we 50 years back it's unbelievable how much progress was being made. Also as we both mentioned- he already delivered almost all of his "crazy" ideas!
DeleteI'd love to drive a car like that! I think it's a fantastic experience. Perhaps for a few years we are lacking to implement a new technology of moving such cars. I hope I live to see this. I like Elon Musk and his ideas, even if he thinks only about increasing sales. He thinks very futuristic and even if his company can not think of a new technology, he can help other geniuses achieve it.
ReplyDeleteAs I mentioned in some other comment- we should be aware that Elon Musk is already mostly inspiring others to make his dreams come true. He's a great leader and the same as you I hope that he'll succed in most of his projects!
DeleteI my opinion someone will eventually make hover cars reality. I just don't know if they will be practical. I belevive that we are in the middle of a breakthrough but with electric cars.
ReplyDeleteThay are just a better tech - so elegant and efficient and so powerfull. We already know how to make great electric engines. Now everybody are working very hard to create better, more energy dense batteries that will charge very fast. Almost all car companies are investing bilions of dollars into developing electric cars and I can't wait to buy myself one in the future.
This great car revolution was made by Elon Musk. I think that our children will learn about him in schools as a Nicola Tesla of our times - a man that changed the world.
We should also need to know that Elon is mostly "just" a leader, so basicly he didn't invent most of the technologies that his companies were using over the years but at the other hand he was unstopable with his various ideas. This is unique talent as well. You mentioned right- for now the most desirable product is new type of batteries which let push technology even further.
DeleteI’m not the right person to talk about automotive news like this one. I’m totally in love with old, classic cars. I have two Mercedes from the early 90s. Even electric cars are too "exotic" for me, let alone hover cars. In my opinion all those news lead to the disappearance of classic automotive, so I’m not excited about this. Never an electric car will impress me much more than a V8 engine under the hood and if we want to fly, we can buy Cessna, which is cheaper than tesla new car. ;)
ReplyDeleteI think that good, old V8 are being killed not by new technologies but because of increasing of reduction of exhaust emissions by governments. The sad truth is that they'll problably become collectable items what would lead to increase costs of purchase and owning.
DeletePs. I'm also much more for petrol than electric power.
It's certainly an intriguing concept, but as I am not a much of a dreamer I am going to perceive it as a futuristic concept until it will be introduced. Though even it the idea would come to life someday it would still probably be unreachable luxury for most of people for matter of decades. Generally I wish Elon Musk the best as he ,distinctly from other entrepreneurs, actually have been successful in his endeavors.
ReplyDeleteYour probably right but please remember that's all business and at first it have to make a profit. Back in the days cell phones was also only for most wealthiest one. The same was with Tesla cars - 1st car (that was mostly modified Lotus) was hilarious expensive but it let company to develop and produce cars on bigger scale what lead to introducing Tesla Model 3 that should be more afforable for wider range of people.

ReplyDelete1) I am pretty sure that hovers car can revolutionize the transport and make it extremely "agile." On the other hand, I am rather down-to-earth person and can see many potential problems, the following issues came to my mind:
--> road infrascture has to be heavily changed and adjusted to this new kind of vehicles,
--> very big price of such a car - only for really rich people,
--> new safety regulations, traffic regulations have to be introduced.
2) As I told earlier there are some potential problems, but sky is the limit. Let's consider electic cars as example - Scandinavian countries are investiging in this technology lot's of money these days - and electric cars are becoming more and more common. The same may apply to hover cars (but I am not convinced that it will happen in foreesable future)
3) I believe we should support such creative people as much as we can - many of their ideas may make our lives easier.
Really appreciate your comment! Most of the things that you mentioned was already replayed in other comments so feel free to enter the discussion.
Delete1.If hover cars will be created and going to production, we will not see it on our roads soon.
ReplyDelete2. In the past, many things were like sci-fi. Now they are completely normal for us. Yes, I think we are in the middle of a breakthrough, however, it will take some time before we see such cars on our streets. We've known electric cars for a long time, but putting them on our roads is quite difficultbecause of the prices and mentality of people.
3.Elon Musk is a very intelligent man whom I appreciate. Yes, I think of him as a visionary, I don't think it's just about selling. As far as I know, he was close to bankruptcy several times because of his crazy ideas.
Exactly as you mentioned - Elan was several times really close to bankruptcy but his dedication and truly believing in his ideas saved him and his companies. He won't achieve even half of his goals if he won't be so dedicated.
DeleteI think it's an interesting concept that might revolutionize car industry. However it is a long way to go for this idea to become reality. Even electrical car adoption is still a work in progress that was slowed down in recent months. As for Elon it's hard to say. He knows how to find investors and have some great ideas.
ReplyDeleteAs I wrote in some other comment- please remember that fully electrical cars in the early 2000's was also mostly a dream-thing. Technology is changing faster than we can imagine!
DeleteSounds like a really interesting idea to me. Not sure how real the information is but I would buy one just for the looks and the experience. This is something completely different from all the cars that are on the roads right now. I wonder how long it can take to become real and popular.
ReplyDeleteWe already have some of the sci-fi things around us so yes I think this is like a middle part of this.
Of course Elon Musk is a visionary but that's what keeps him going when it comes to create new ideas.
Tesla is on the market since early 2000's and for now they're basically doing a mass production so based on a previous experience we can assume that it's really close to us!
DeleteFrom my perspective hover cars, even though they're currently something beyond our imagination or at least to some of us, is a great idea! Current transport methods are very inefficient. Take regular cars for example, a road traffic they're generating is enormous. Hopefully this won't be just a fiction and Elon together with his co-workes will introduce something extraordinary, the beginning of something we could only see in the movies. It's not that clear whether he's a visionary or his engineers are. The great ideas that come up from their workshop is not a work of just one single person.
ReplyDeleteThat's my point! Obviously fresh solution will cause some problems but it's totally normal for new technologies. We need to remember that it would take some time not only to bring hover cars to people but also develop new infrastructure for them but it's another bright point that we'll make a progress not only at transport but also in infrastructure industry.
Delete1. What’s your opinion about hover cars at all?
ReplyDeleteFor me it is a great idea. In a past I was dreaming about such cars and tried to even invent them :D
2. Is it still Sci-Fi or we’re in the middle of breakthrough?
I am afraid it is still a sci-fi. To make such cars we must invent a completely new way of lifting in the air, because present technology is not efficient enough to maintain a big weight under a ground by low cost.
3. Would you consider Elon Musk as a visionary or he’s just trying to get attention for increasing sales?
I think it is both. Nowadays unfortunately no visionary can handle without money, but also no big sales can be handled without a vision ;) So Elon Mysk needs a money to perform his visions and make them a reality...
I can see your point and basically I've already mentioned all similar answers so feel free to join conversation and bring up your thoughts!
DeleteI have never thought that it will be possible any time soon a hover car. But if the words like those comes from Elon Musk mouth it is more likely to happen. I’m more than excited to see thing which were so far possible only in video industry.
ReplyDeleteThis is a case where you think "haha, what a clickbait" and then you see author of the mentioned quote and you realize- damn, this man has proven his ideas few times already!
DeleteI don't believe in hovering cars coming in 2022. It might have been a metaphor, simply result of this words may not be something you expect. I think that in some areas we're living even post Sci-Fi era. Elon Musk is great at getting attention, but I admire some of his achievements. They required a lot of discipline. I envy him for this discipline.
ReplyDeleteOne thing he was never been best at is specifying the date of his incoming project so as you mentioned I would be careful with this 2022 declaration.
Delete1. What’s your opinion about hover cars at all?
ReplyDeleteI don't think that hover cars will come to common use so early. But as an idea it's interesiting. We'll see :)
2. Is it still Sci-Fi or we’re in the middle of breakthrough?
I think both, but Elon Musk had proven that he can make a dream come true, so I'm waiting for more in this case.
3. Would you consider Elon Musk as a visionary or he’s just trying to get attention for increasing sales?
He is obvious inventor. He is the greatest mind of our times, a man with no borders. He's also a good businessman, even some temporary financial problems in his companies. He will do this, he's great and I'm waiting for more from him :)
You mentioned common use- look on the computers or cell phones. Back in the days, the first one's, was treated as a expensive toy useless in work and science and for now we can't imagine a world without computers. Case with cell phones was very similar one so I think it's really hard to say what future will bring and maybe in 30 years we won't be able to think of the world without hover cars!
DeleteFirstly - YES PLEASE!
ReplyDeleteSecondly, I think that we cannot say what sci-fi really is at the moment. We are in the age of change so rapid, that dreams of today are the past of tomorrow.
And when it comes to Mr. Musk. Whether he's a tech visionary or a PR stuntman. I don't really care. No one brought this much attention to science and technology in decades. This is what pushes us forward.
