Week 7 [07.01 - 12.01] Is war really coming?

                                                                      Is war really coming?

Following the assassination of Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani, killed in a US airstrike at Baghdad airport on Friday unrest has once again hit the middle east, which has also been known, as a pretty turbulent region. Qasem Soleimani was actually one of Iran's most powerful men and a highly controversial figure. He was head of the Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force, an elite unit that handles Iran's overseas operations -- and one deemed to be a foreign terrorist organization by the US.

He originally started his front line military career in the Iran-Iraq war during the early 1980s. He rose to prominence to become an indispensable figure in Iran, playing a very important role in spreading influence in the Middle East. He lead campaigns in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen, actively fighting ISIS. However the United States viewed Iran's top general as a ruthless killer, this was the direct reason why President Donald Trump decided to eliminate him.

His corpse has already been returned to Iran and the funeral procession has begun on Saturday, marking the beginning of days of mourning. The middle east has been in conflict for decades. The ruling dictators have failed. The liberal democracies in the region have been unsuccessful. The Iranian-American relationship has been bad ever since the Islamic revolution took place in 1978. Open conflict has been anticipated a couple of times already, but so far none has actually started.
Political commentators from all parts of the world are now speculating, that this conflict might escalate very soon, into a bigger one. Donald Trump has already mentioned aiming 52 targets within Iran, which could be bombed at any time. Iran has also spoken about revenge and its plans to retaliate. Possibly Iran could conduct cyber attacks on European or American targets.

Even though Iran cannot fact the he U.S. military directly, there are many scenarios. Like attacking U.S. military targets in the region, supporting proxy
forces fighting the and its allies across the Middle East, aand perhaps most conceivable, cyberattacks on U.S. cities and infrastructure.

1. Do you think the III world war will really break out ?
2. Do you think the US envolment in the different parts of the world is legitimate?
3. Which consequences will the escalation of the current conflict could have ? Like rising oil prices .etc.?

Week 7 [06.01 - 12.01] Slavic Blood in NBA

                                                                 Slavic Blood in NBA

Luka Donćić – another Michael Jordan, another GOAT or just another talented kid?

Luka Donćić looks like no one special if you compare him with other NBA players. 201 cm high, about 104 kg weight, nothing special. But since 1989 only Michael Jordan (when MJ was 25), our GOAT (greatest of all time) has taken 18 straight games with at least 20 points,5 rebounds and 5 assists. He is not 20 years old, however his life story is worth introducing.

He was born in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. His father, Sasa Donćić was a professional basketball player and his mother was a model and dancer. With such parents, sport has been with Luka since the first days of his life. He debuted in a professional senior team in 2015 when he was 16. His first club was Union Olimpija. Two years later he was the best player in Real Madrid. Moreover, he had led his team to the victory in the EuroLeague in 2018. Additionally, he was most valuable player (MVP) in finals and final four, so we can clearly say that he was the best player in the whole tournament.

In 2018 Luka joined NBA Draft in which NBA team select and pick new players into their roster. With the 3rd pick (notice, that this is extremely high) Atlanta Hawks selected Luka Donćić. After a  few hours he was a part of trade between Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks and now Dallas has  this Wonder Boy in their squad. His first words after the Draft ceremony were “I’m just glad to be here and I’m happy to be with them (Dallas Mavs).”

In the first year in the National Basketball Association, Luka won ROTY (Rookie of the Year Award- prize for best rookie). That was very optimistic start in the best basketball league in the world. Now, we can compare him with such great players like LeBron James, Kevin Durant or Allen Iverson, who also won this award in their first seasons. Luka’s value for his team can be measured in +/- statistics. Plus/minus statistic measures who scores more. This statistic is measured for every player. Every match takes at least 48 minutes. Imagine that in the match between ChicagoBulls and Dallas Mavericks, Luka was on the court for 30 minutes. While he was playing, his team scored 15 points more than Miami Heat, so his +/- is +15. At this moment of the season, Luka is the third best player in the whole NBA, right after LeBron and James Harden in this plus/minus statistics. If we sum up every match, the count will be +138 and it is still growing.

Now we are waiting for All Star Weekend when we definitely see Luka. At this moment Dallas Mavericks team is  on the verge of being one of the best clubs in NBA this year. Luka with Kristaps Porzingis might be the best young duo in NBA.

·    Do you think that European basketball players are able to reach the top of NBA?
·     If you had one chance to meet  a famous sportsman, who would it be?
·     What is your favorite young star in sport? (not only in basketball :))
