WEEK 3 [19-25.04.2021] Privacy in current world - face surveillance
What is privacy and why its so important ?
Privacy is a fundamental human right, right to be alone. In current world with so many mobile devices around us privacy is something we should care a lot.
There are many things behind privacy, if you have a fence in your house - its kind of privacy, if you put window curtain to not allow people from street look what you do inside your house - its privacy. Protecting your passwords, all limitation you set up on Facebook/Instagram - its your privacy. There is no strict definition of privacy, it can be a bit different for each of us but for all of us it should be something really important.

Is there any way we can feel ''free & not watched''?
Right now almost all devices we use collect data. Whenever you search for something in internet, within next 2 minutes you will find Facebook proposing you advertisement of product you searched for. Whenever you pay via your credit card your localization will be saved. Whenever you go with your phone, you can be easily localized.
But there is simple way to become free and not watched. Only thing you need to do is log off from all social media, leave your phone at home, use cash instead of credit card. Doing this you can be almost 100% sure that you are free of watchers and no data can be collected. You can go to whatever place you want and do whatever you wants - of course only legal things :) - and feel anonymous until someone spots you and make you photo but on this we don't have any impact.
Face surveillance.
Is a technology that allows authorities to track us in every moment of our life. Even if you do steps mentioned above to become extend your privacy with face surveillance you will not be able to be free and anonymous.
As its mentioned in this video such technology might be very dangerous for world. If such solution will be more common our freedom will for me personally drop to the level i cannot accept. In such reality if you would be on any walkout which is not in line with policy of current ruling party you can be easily identified and punished. What if you would be ever drunk and your employer does not tolerates people being drunk even after work ( that's my case, according to rules we have in company we should always be in ''good shape'' as we are representatives of our company.)
I heard that Chinese government had implemented such solution which we know from Netflix Black Mirror series. They do have an ranking of citizens and they track all social medias they use and in bigger cities they do have as well face surveillance. Due to this 80 millions of Chinese are not allowed to leave country because they rating is to low.
Questions?
1. How do you protect your privacy and is it important for you ?
2. What do you think about face surveillance?
3. Would you like to have such technology implemanted in Poland ?

To be honest I think that I don’t want to reveal my privacy protection secrets. It’s important for me and I do believe that revealing such info may help others and make my privacy more vulnerable to attacks. As for the face surveillance, it sounds frightful and I believe that as for now it’s only on the abstract level. I believe that there will always be some way to protect our privacy and even in the case of face surveillance, the world will find a way to hide from it. Otherwise, each of us will have to do it on our own. I think that I don’t have to answer the last question as the answer comes to mind after reading my comment.
ReplyDeleteFully respect your approach of not sharing your tips for your privacy protection. If face surveillance would cross abstract level im really doubtful that us will find a way to hide from it unfortunately.
DeleteWell, I have to agree with mr. Mroczek here, I would prefer not to share my methods of protecting my privacy. I do however share some of the authors concerns about face recognition being implemented worldwide. In my opinion there is a fine line between collecting personal data for safety reasons and just to spy on people in order to later sell the collected data. And that is where I feel there should be a limit to how intricate new systems should be. I feel that we as a society agree to some sort of surveillance if we feel like it is necessary, however there were many cases that proved it is not always the case (for example the NSA Snowden case). All in all, every surveillance should be carefully designed and regulated for people not to feel paranoid.
ReplyDeleteAgain, i follow your doubts of sharing your methods of protecting your privacy, anyway this was not my intend to reveal it. Maybe you had some "generic" method that someone doesn’t know know and would find it useful.
DeleteAs it was mentioned in the article, it is difficult to take care of our privacy with possessing a smartphone and accounts on social media. If we are active social-media users, we show a part of our life, our privacy. As a method of protecting my privacy, I try to consider what application I install on my phone, which I agree to by accepting the privacy policy, what data the application wants to have access to, etc. In addition, I haven’t been active on social media for a long time. I believe that face surveillance has both positive and negative sides. On the positive side, it definitely can help in reducing the crime rate. It is easier to track he criminal. On the other hand, it allows you to restrict the freedom of life of ordinary people. I think I wouldn’t like to have such technology implemented in Poland.
ReplyDeleteYeah, its always worth to carefully read the privacy policy of each app we install. Regarding face surveillance i have same thoughts as you, i really believe it would help reducing crime rate.
DeleteI think everyone cares about his privacy, so do I. The way of taking care of our privary should not be revealed, this is my personal opinion. What is more omportant, reading other comments I can see that people really care about their privacy, that's good. If it comes to face surveillance, I think it is only a matter of time before more and more governments use this technology. I strongly disagree with arguments praising face surveillance, this technology has a huge potential of targeting every move we take. When it comes to Poland, it seems polish goverment would love to use it. Let's hope it will not come soon.
ReplyDeletePrivacy protection is quite an extensive topic these days. As I am a social media person, I have to accept that some of my data will stay on the internet and, to be completely honest, I don't care. Which does not mean that I am not trying to reduce the footprint I left on the internet. For this purpose, I use a VPN connection and an increasingly popular browser called duckduckgo. As for the face detection system and its use to keep an eye on citizens, in my opinion it is a very dangerous tool that can, in a very dangerous way, allow the government to restrict freedom and track its citizens. Admittedly, it has its advantages, but for it to be used only for a good purpose is almost impossible to achieve, unless we reach a utopia one day, but let's be honest, it is unlikely. I assume that the Polish government would very much like to introduce such a system to life in our country, but let's hope it will never happen.
ReplyDeleteI love your idea of using VPN connection, to be honest i have forgot about it. Right after this weekend i will install it, maybe only in theory this will extend my privacy but still, lets try :D
DeleteYes, privacy is important to me. To protect my privacy obviously I use the locks at doors and the curtains at my home. When it comes to security on the Internet, I have set up all the passwords on my social media platforms and every now and then I change those passwords for better protection. I think face surveillance is terrifying for our freedom and unfortunately, I guess it is also something difficult to escape from. As we are claimed to be free people, we should not be observed in such a way and spied on every single time we are outside our home. I would not like to have such technology implemented in Poland, but I guess it is only a matter of time to see it being present here as well. We must try to do our best in order to protect ourselves from such a technological implementation.
ReplyDeleteIm worried that face surveillance would not only spie us outside our home, we have a lot of devices with cam in which i believe authorities might as well use it to track us in our "safe" place - home.
Delete1. How do you protect your privacy and is it important for you ?
ReplyDeleteI'm using the best way to protect my privacy - I don't use social media actively, and in my opinion it is most common way to gather data about someone. Even cybersecurity experts have term for such information gathering - social engineering.
2. What do you think about face surveillance?
As always in similar cases the idea in theory is good but execution is poor or unsafe. Just like in China where this system is used by government to control citizens.
3. Would you like to have such technology implemented in Poland ?
I think no one would be happy if such technology would be used in their country. I know our current government would be extremely happy if they could implement it :)
I'm trying to use complex subject-oriented passwords. I'm using VPN and trying to avoid passing data when it's not necessary but it's not always possible, to be honest.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's right. I would feel awkward and under some kind of observation - it's not a feeling I want to have.
Of course not, but there are areas when it could be useful. Such as prisons. This type of facility is not based on privacy. So there is no law-breaking and the safety of occupied prisoners would be much higher.
Of course privacy is very important but in life I protect my privacy at home a lot more than in internet. I don't feel comfortable when people see what is happening in my home, but if it comes to internet I don't really care.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is not a good thing, i don't have a strong opinion to it but it remindes me of "god eye" from Fast and furious movie and one episode of black mirror and in both cases there it does not give me a good vibe, especially when it comes to beeing watched all the time.
I don't think it should be implemented in any country, maybe in restricted ares that only few people can come in that would be a great security system. I know that as a not important person it would not change anything to me and i wouldn't not care than, but I would feel uncomfortable.
I admit that I use some social media portals, but I only use them to communicate with others and follow some fan pages. I'm aware that despite everything, my data somehow gets into public space and can be used, for example in the case of personalized displayed web advertisements. However, it doesn't bother me that much, I don't value my privacy as the highest priority, for sure no one will learn more about me than I know myself. Thus, referring to the protection of my privacy, I don't use any special tools or behaviors to remain as unnoticed as possible, I don't really care.
ReplyDeleteThe subject of face surveillance sounds very dangerous, after getting acquainted with this technology, it's not hard to say that this is an exaggeration and no one should have any doubts that it should not be legal. All other data leaks and security breaches aside, face surveillance is associated with the worst type of interference in the life of the average person, which should never arise or be used anywhere in the world.
Of course, I wouldn't like such technology to be introduced to Poland - neither in its full version, nor in any simplification. This is sick.
1. I’m not this type of people who care About their privacy every time they use internet. However I’m awer about this issue. I implement small habits to my life-style in web to have more privacy. For example I use duck duck go instead google or using VPN when I want to order something important for me or my family.
ReplyDelete2. I don’t like this idea where this technology gives possibility for department can keep an eye on us all the time like big brother. It’s too much power to control community for every government even the most liberal. Governments change, tools remain.
3. Idea of this technology in Poland is the good example where government could abused this technology. I know there are some positive aspects of this technology but I believe face surveillance can take from us social freedoms.
Frankly, privacy issue is one of the most crucial topics in our modern world and with all these social media apps it can be violated pretty easily, if used carelessly. The best way to protect our private life is just avoiding sharing too much in social media. In general, just don't post any sensitive data and 'log off' as much as you can.
ReplyDeleteFor me, face surveillance seems to be extremely dangerous for public and mass. The consequences of misusing it by unqualified units can be quite dramatic. On the other hand, this technology is an intresting idea and can turn out to be very helpful in some areas which will need extra monitoring (e.g. prisons)
Of course I would not want to have such a thing in Poland. It's too dangerous.
1. Every day we are exposed to the loss of our privacy. We are fully aware of this, but in some cases we choose simpler solutions. In this case, I hardly use cash, because it is hard for me to calculate how much I will need today, plus I am afraid to move around with a lot of money in my wallet, for fear of theft. My privacy is extremely important to me, so I don't post on the popular social network app Facebook, I don't show and share my life on Instagram, and I don't make videos on Tik-Tok. Maybe I’m weird :)
ReplyDelete2. We are watched every day by different people, and we wrongly think that we are safe. I heard about a project that was introduced in China and it is unnecessary in my opinion. The government and the media have too intrusive impact into the private lives of the community, for example on our iPhones there is ability to unlock the phone with FaceID. How many of you use this and don't even have a clue that this is some sort of control?
3. I am definitely against such advanced technology to control society, like in China. It is certainly uncomfortable for many Chinese residents, although in many cases such surveillance should be. I mean prisons, where people dangerous to society are kept, but on the other hand each of us deserves a second chance. Unfortunately, it is difficult to say unequivocally, although I am certainly against this kind of solutions, I respect my privacy and the privacy of others.
