Week 7 [14-20.06.2021] Old vs new cars
I want to introduce you to my point of view about classic and modern cars. There are as many opinions as there are cars. As for me classic cars are 100% better than modern vehicles. We all know that cars nowadays have a lot of electrical system which may be or may not be useful, in my opinion those systems make the driver lazy and not so much interested on what is going down on the road. But let's get to the few points about them both.
One of the most popular topics to discuss is design, as we all can see new cars looks so much more futuristic that sometimes I don't know if it is a car or a spaceship. But if it comes to older cars they were designed with a character and were very unique. Now when I see cars it is really hard to say which car company it is, is it a KIA or is it a Ford, i don't sometimes know because they are very similar. Below i am posting few photos of older and new cars to compare for yourself about the design. One of them is a BMW which now is very controversial I don't know if the front is very appealing since it looks like i can take that grill from it and make a barbecue for my whole family. But of course it depends on your own taste. :)
As I mentioned in the beginning modern cars make people lazy, we have so many support system that are meant to help us drive safe but is it that safe? Maybe systems that are designed not to crash or hit anyone, for example when pedestrian walks on a street or someone stop in front of us suddenly. Sure that thing is very helpful but what if it won't work since it is all electric and we are depending on a computer. In old cars drivers had to become better and better in driving because they don't have any support systems that is why people are paying more attention to the road. Let us take us on a highway, in all new cars we have a cruise control, so while we are on a highway we press a button and our car drive with a constant speed of let's say 120 km/h so we do not have to press any pedals. I think that is a terrible thing since it is really boring and can make a driver fall asleep behind a wheel. On the other hand all those point depends on a driver. I always have one question, what would someone who drives a automatic new car daily have to drive old manual car without any systems. :D
There are a lot of points that we can discuss like:
- price older cars were much cheaper and affordable for a normal person who does not make millions a year,
- headlights, have you noticed while driving at night on the street that you got blinded very often? Now cars have xenon lights which might be sometimes installed improperly and cause a lot of inconvenience for drivers in front of you,
- driving experience old cars are about the driver and their experience on the road, giving them a little thrill and fun on the road,
- maintenance, in modern cars if something breaks it costs us a lot of money and mostly we have to give a car to a mechanic because we are not able to do anything since it is all electronics and needs programs that are made for this kind of repairs.
As w talk about older cars there are a lot of them that are very rare and interesting which are a candy for an eye to look at when they got seen on the street, below i am posting few photos of them. It is fun to see or drive a car like this because they are very unique comparing to the new cars that we see everyday on the streets.
Toyota Supra
Nissan Skyline
and a cheaper one but very cute Maza Miata MX 5
Here is an addition youtube video with a Miata race:
Questions:
1. Which cars do you prefer older ones or modern?
2. What to you think about assistance systems in new cars?
3. If you would pick a car for yourself (your dream car)?
I’m a kind of a petrolhead so this topic is close to me. I don’t want to choose between older and modern cars because both of them have their pros and cons. Regarding the fact that modern cars have changed a little bit, there are a few things that are important for me. In the last years, there was a trend to create cars with smaller engines or hybrid systems. Also, EVs are becoming more and more popular. I like modern cars because they have a lot of gadgets and important improvements but I hate small engines so there are only a few new cars that have big good old engines. Generally, most US cars meet my requirements and that’s why I only have imported vehicles. I also can’t imagine going on holiday with my family in an old car without all the safety systems so I’d choose the modern car. As for the older cars, I also love them because it’s great fun to drive them because they don’t try to help you. Whatsmore they challenge the driver skills and that's also fun but it has to be done in the right way. Some time ago I had an old RWD vehicle to learn drifting and it was very entertaining and also taught me a lot of new things regarding driving skills. As for now, my dream car is a car that is modern and old at the same time. It’s a Dodge Challenger which has all the necessary modern systems but also a big good old engine so that the driver have to put some effort to drive it.
Hello, i do prefer modern cars, for me the more electrical solutions in car the better. I really like to follow modern trends, improvements ect. I think its no fully true that assistance systems makes drivers lazy, it fully depends on driver I would say. But what is proven that safety on roads increases which is mostly caused by that our cars are just simply more safe. In most cases computer will react faster than normal person so we may avoid a lot of accidents with it. I would choose one of Tesla cars as my dream car at the moment, for me driving a car should be time when I can rest after work of keeping full focus on the road.
As soon as I saw Miata's picture, I knew this article was going to be fun! Although I do not currently have a driving license, mainly due to my habits related to public transport, I have been interested in some car models for a long time.
Personally, I am rather a fan of the older looking cars. In my opinion, cars used to be much more original and had their own personality. Unfortunately, from year to year, cars are becoming more and more similar to each other, one of the main reasons for which is the safety policy on the roads of the European Union countries. An example are new Miata models that do not have pop-up headlights (insert Donut Media pop-up headlights song). This was mainly down to pedestrian safety regulations being tightened up and having a ‘sharp’ surface area was deemed too dangerous for most manufacturers to bother continuing with pop-ups.
Personally, I have no opinion on the subject of assistance systems. If someone only wants to get from point A to point B in a comfortable way, without worrying about a more precise drive, their decision is whether they will buy a car with or without them. On the other hand, more and more people are choosing such systems, which means that every year cars are overloaded with complicated electronics that love to break down and increase the price of the car. In my opinion, the biggest problem is that some people get a license too easily, even though you can see that they are not suitable for driving. An example is a gentleman from Poland who has not passed the exam 200 times!
If I had to choose my dream car, the choice would most likely be the Datsun 240z. But I have to admit that this is a rather difficult goal to achieve, nowadays it's hard to find a model in good condition whose chassis has not been eaten away by rust. The Mazda MX-5 is a more budget car that can be obtained in good condition. On the Polish market, you can find many models with a chassis untouched by rust, and the same applies to spare parts.
It is hard to say which one do I prefer, as someone said above, both have pros and cons. Personally, I love old cars, also it depends what do you mean by an old car. As far as I know the average age of a car in Poland is 13 years. Does it mean that cars from for example 2005 are old? I do not thing so, I have '95 A6 and I think I can say I have an old car. I do like the way it looks, the way it works but to be honest I miss modern headlights (mine are terrible, driving at night is a horror) and some modern solutions.
Actually, I do like assistance systems. In my opinion it is much safier to have and to use these systems. I often drive an RWD and I simply do not see driving it in the winter with traction control off. No, thanks. Same for cruise control or automatic transmission. These are made to better the comfort and the safety of driver and passengers. It is really hard to pick a dream car. A dream about a car I can afford, so all of '70 american muscle cars are off the table.
Personally I like Lexus and generally Toyota so it could be LS430 or Land Cruiser 200. I also love the way Jaguar XJ308 looks like so these are probably my dream cars.
It really depends, but I'm a fan of long hoods so I like old muscle cars like Dodge Charger, Pontiac Firebird or Plymouth cuda, but since few years i'm really enjoying the design of new Volvo cars.
I like all assistance systems, especially that most of them are designed to minimize consequence of accidents for drivers, passengers and now the motor companies are also try to minimize impact for pedestrians. I don't have a dream car, but if I need to choose it probably would be a Volvo S90
1. Personally, I am a big fan of older model cars. My interest in older model cars was born when I saw a 1960's Mercedes Cabiolet in a friend's garage, with red color and a drop down sunroof. However, when it comes to functionality, I definitely like the newer cars better.
2. Assistance systems in new cars is very good and makes it much easier to use, such as emergency braking is very helpful, because in difficult driving situations are an extra help and safety.
3. My dream car is definitely a Volvo XC 90 because it is a large and comfortable car. In addition, it is a spacious car that can accommodate the whole family. In addition, the car will achieve a high safety rating in tests.
1. Most of them prefer older cars, today cars are produced very linearly. The choice in showrooms is often limited to SUVs and hybrid engines. I am not a fan of these solutions, so many offers are not for me. I am one of those people who think that the car has its own character and is looking for something more than a moving machine. As one slogan says, driving pleasure. 2. Many of these systems are quite handy, including a system that tells you to pay attention when you approach another car too fast. I really appreciate the fact that the systems are optional and can be turned on or off. Unfortunately, there are also cases where a given system is imposed in advance. 3. My dream car is an alfa romeo giulia quadrifoglio. This car has a 2.9 V9 engine from Ferrari and has a power of 510 hp. It has a timeless design and is for me the epitome of all the most important features.
Due to many reasons, I must admit I prefer modern cars than old ones. First of all, for me they look much better, they are fancy I would say or some of them even luxurious. Secondly, the technology that is so advanced right now in cars is a positive aspect for to me, because it makes the ride much more comfortable. Lastly, I prefer modern cars due to safety reasons. Of course, technology fails sometimes, but it takes only a little bit of our attention to control the ride. Also taking into consideration other features of modern cars I think it is only for our benefit. So, when it comes to assistance systems, I believe the idea makes a lot of sense, but people have to remember not to become lazy behind the wheel and still to always pay attention on the road. My dream car would be Tesla S 😊
onsidering the price of maintenance and failure rate I have to agree, I prefer older cars. Maybe there is a little bit of sentiment in me, but I believe, the less complicated the car is, the more reliable it is. I used to drive a very simple, older car and it was very dependable. It did miss some very useful appliances like cruise control or even electric windows though. Which now, having a newer car, I find incredibly practical. Unfortunately I can not afford the newest peaks of technological advancement and then later be able to maintain them, that is why I am trying to very careful with my choices. I suppose if I were to chose a car for myself right now, I would go for a Volvo, as I find them very classy and reliable.
Such an intresting article, it's so nice to see again the classic Nissan Skyline once again! To be totally fair I know almost nothing about the cars. I don't even have the driver's license and on the daily basis I don't pay attention to the car market (Generally speaking I know nothing about modern cars issues or news). But I prefere the old looking cars, they have something magnetic in their looks. Some old cars fans could tell that these cars 'have a soul'. On the other hand I truly admire many moder aspects - driving experience mostly. As I said before I don't know nothing about cars, so I can't tell anything intresting about car assistance systems. When I was younger I really loved the Skyline or Eclipse. Now I'd rather say maybe an old Jaguar(If I was lucky enough to find some good one)? I always liked this brand, even the modern versions of xf or xj. But in my case, driver's license would be a top priority :D
I have to disagree with You a little, right now even the BMW e46 is considered a really old car. Is it true? I'm not sure but people said the same every time when something was new and another thing was old. I'm pretty sure that in 20-30 years BMW series 3 g20 will be considered a "beautiful classic" someday. Getting back to the question, which cars I like? Both. I'm impressed with how modern technology affects automotive and I'm also impressed how well designed old cars keep in shape nowadays and still shock with time-independent design.
I think it's the future. Of course, there are some misunderstandings. A lot of people think that if they have those systems they can become lazy and distracted. It's not a good direction. People should be always focused on the road and systems should just prevent mistakes people sometimes do.
Wow, it's a really hard question. I have to name at least four of them. Classic: Mustang made as Eleanor replica. It's barely not possible to catch the original. Modern fun car: Mustang Shelby GT500. There is nothing more to say it's a beast. Exotic: Hmm it's a hard choice too, I'm a fan of Ferrari but Porshe made a wonderful car. Porsche 911 gt3. That's my choice. SUV: Urus Lamborghini. It's a fast, beautiful, and exotic SUV.
