Week 6 [12.12-18.12] Ayrton Senna – The Legend of Racing

Almost everyone of us has got an idol or a favourite musician, an actress or just a sportsman  you support etc. Don’t you?
I have watched F1 races since I was a child. I've got many favourite drivers, but also thanks to the internet I learnt about old great champions like Niki Lauda or James Hunt. Also,  I have watched many of their awesome duels! I recommend watching “Rush” from 2013.
And there is also a place for a driver whose driving style I love and whose history, unfortunately, did not go well. Yes. His story, unfortunately, is the one of the saddest.

Have you heard about Ayrton Senna? He was one of the best Formula One drivers ever.

Ayrton Senna

He was born in 1960 in Sao Paulo (Brazil) and he sat behind the wheel when he was 4 years old.
At the beginning it was naturally only carting, but since his first races at age of 13 he improved quickly and  moved to Europe to win there less important racing competitions.
Finally in 1984 he started his debut season as F1 driver in Toleman team. He made a great impression on the whole racing world driving in the Monaco Grand Prix. It was a really  wet day and he was able to finish in the 2nd place!

„Being second is to be the first of the ones who lose”

As we know today, he was the best wet-weather driver ever. Think about other great Formula 1 drivers, like Damon Hill, Alain Prost or Michael Schumacher. Each of them was overtaken by Senna in probably best first lap ever - in 1993 Europe Grand Prix (at Donington Park in UK):

Damon Hill is the only one who doesn't lost more than a lap to Ayrton in this race!

In next few years Senna continued his F1 career, he became a Champion three times, he won Grand Prix 41 times, 65 times he started from the pole position. He drove in such teams as Toleman, Lotus, McLaren and Williams.

And then it was time for the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola circuit. Currently known as the most tragic F1 weekend since 1960. During qualifications another driver - Roland Ratzenberger died due to a crash.
Also, Rubens Barichello and mechanics and viewers were injured.

But the whole world was shocked on Sunday 1st May…

Unfortunately, he didn’t survive this terrible accident…
Since this tragic accident safety improvements were introduced and no driver died in F1 race for 20 years – until Jules Bianchi who had a crash in 2014 Japan Grand Prix (he died a few months later).
To realize how dangerous F1 is, you should just imagine speed – Ayrton hit the wall at the speed of 300km/h…

Watch another video – one of Robert Kubica’s best laps (Check out the distance between the car and the barriers at this speed… Only a few centimeters!):

At the end I would like to recommend you a movie about Ayrton. There is a short trailer from 2010:

1. Have you heard about any similar histories of people who died or have become seriously injured doing things they loved?
2. Which sport is most dangerous in your opinion and why?
3. What kind of driver are you? Calm or rather mad etc.? Describe yourself!

  1. 1. I did not give the exact name, but a lot of people died trying to enter the mount everest or other Seven Summits. For me it is very strange that people are so risk their lives to enter the top of the mountain.

    2. Since when I watched the movie Everest, I think that the most dangerous sport is climbing in the Seven Summits. High up in the mountains are adverse weather conditions over which people have no influence. People who are in the mountains will not get such a quick help rescue because the weather conditions and surface make it difficult to reach such as helicopter support.

    3. It depends. If I go normally and no I am not upset by the way, I am very calm :)

    1. You're right. A lot of people dies each year during climbing on mountains. Not only on these highest. At lower well. And not only professional climbers - amateurs too, as we can hear or read from time to time in TV, Internet etc.

I didn't hear about Everest movie. Thanks, I'll try to watch it, maybe during Christmas break. It may be interesting.

Naturally, at high altitude are completely different weather conditions, lower air density etc. It may have affect on human phisical and mental side. And as you said - also rescuers may have big problems.

  2. 1. The car accident that killed Paul Walker. Paul was mainly associated with the film The Fast and the Furious. He was a lover of fast cars. He died as a passenger while riding sports car with a friend.
    2. BASE JUMPING - a fall from a height (from buildings, antenna masts, bridges and cliffs). According to statistics, this sport is the cause of death of 5 to 15 people a year - most not from the fall, but rather from the point at which the fall is over.
Here you can see this sport:

    3. Usually calm. Only when am in a hurry, and there is a traffic jam, then I start to annoyed.

    1. Yes, I've heard about Paul's story. He was in Santa Clarita due to a charity event which he was co-hosting.

I can agree with you, that base jumping is dangerous, but I think that wingsuiting is more dangerous and impressive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnvvsjstveM&hd=1
It looks amazing and it must be a great feeling when you fly in proximity with all these mountains, trees, cliffs etc.

  3. I heard about similar histories in our country. In example Marian Bublewicz - rally and racing driver. He won many local and international competitions. He had a very good technical preparation and he had the best car in those years - Sierra RS Cosworth (I love sports cars manufactured 20-30 years ago - this cars have a soul).
He died in work, in your car. Probably he had problems with car or he made a small technical mistake. In those years there was not special devices for register sport accidents.

In my opinion high mountain climbing is very dangerous. Many people prepare expedition by a few years, but in the mountain they die. It is horrible.

I think that I am calm driver. I ride a lot, so I had many dangerous situation. I try not to repeat them.

    1. I've never heard about Marian Bublewicz. Thanks, I'll try to read about him.
I can agree with you about older sports cars. Today in F1 -> there are so many regulations, many restrictions...
WRC -> Oh, just think about old cars: Lancia Delta Integrale, Lancia Stratos, Audi Quattro, Ford Escort RS, Subaru Impreza, Mitsubishi Lancer even Toyota Celica. And now think about cars from present times: VW Polo, Hyundai i20, Ford Fiesta etc.
Formerly everyone in the backyard dreamed about Subaru Impreza or Mitsubishi Lancer. Do you think that nowadays kids dreams about VW Polo? :D

  4. 1. Have you heard about any similar histories of people who died or have become seriously injured doing things they loved?
Unfortunately there are many examples of people who died or became seriously injured doing things they loved. I mean Himalayan climbers (including polish specialists. There was also the man which name I forgot, but he died during study the climat change in Antarctica.

    2. Which sport is most dangerous in your opinion and why?
I think that all sport disciplines that have to do with enormously high speed (car racing, F1, aviation), aggression (fighting, especially boxing) or risk in the mountains (clombing) are most dangerous.

    3. What kind of driver are you? Calm or rather mad etc.? Describe yourself!
Unfortunately I'm not a credentialed driver yet, but heard from my dad that I drive better backwards than forward.

    1. Boxing aren't probably too dangerous. There is a lot of regulations, judge etc. So risk of dying is relatively small in my opinion.
But you are right with aviation. In last few years I've heard many informations about crashes.

@3. There is a car which should be great for you! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epjNUVhpZ_U&hd=1 :)

  5. 1. As Klaudia said: Paul Walker and Roger Rodas – both loved racing. They died together in a car accident.
    2. It's hard to say which sport is the most dangerous. It seems to me that all extreme sports are dangerous (including racing car). In each of these sports is listed as a threat to life
    3. Haha. Funny question. Currently I have too slow car. So much information should be enough

    1. Maybe not all of extreme sports, but most of them.
Bungee jumping is also treated as extreme (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_sport), but I think there is really small danger of losing life.

  6. My uncle was a speedway rider- he drove many years, that was his passion but It reflected to a large extent on his health. He suffered knees damage, and many stomach problems.

    2. Maybe skydiving ? Jumping with parachute is dangerous. You don't have unsure, that everything goes according to the plan.

3.I try drive a car, only one time in my life. I am a very bad driver-I do not have any talent to car driving.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yeah, speedway is a really simple sport, also with some safety improvements like inflatable bands and there are continuously many accidents. Like a Darcy Wardy in last year.
Skydivers dies or accidents happens rarely. But yes, when your both parachutes fail then you have minimal chances to avoid dying.

  7. 1. Have you heard about any similar histories of people who died or have become seriously injured doing things they loved?

The first thing that came to my mind is a history of Steve Irwin. He loved animals, he worked with the most dangerous animals on the world and his nickname is “The Crocodile Hunter” – it explains everything. He died during filming an underwater documentary film, during the thing he loved the most.

    2. Which sport is most dangerous in your opinion and why?

I think the most dangerous sport is mountain climbing. On such height you will never predict the weather conditions and you don’t know if it is your last trip.

    3. What kind of driver are you? Calm or rather mad etc.? Describe yourself!

I think I am a calm driver. Of course I always get mad when someone in front of me is a very bad driver, because I think that such people are a threat on the road. I think that I am a good driver, I prefer to drive more slowly and more surely, but safer.

    1. At first after reading his name I though that I didn't know him. But then I read his nickname and I remembered.
He was this "amazing guy from crocodiles" :) I've seen him sometimes in TV during my childhood.

  8. 1. A Sevilla player Antonio Puerta died after collapsing on the field, during a football game at the age of 22. It was a real shock for everyone associated with the Spanish football.

    3. Every professional sport involves pushing yourself to the limit, risking your health and can be dangerous. Even cricket players die after being hit in the neck by the ball.

    3. I drive fast, but I'm not a mad driver, I take calculated risks. Behind the wheel I act the exact same way as in any other situation.

    1. I'd rather say that it was a shock for everyone associated with football. Not only a spanish.
By your example it's simplier to say that a whole life is dangerous. And it's a true in some way :) We never know, what the next day will bring.

  9. 1.Unfortunately I have. The one which comes to my mind first is Paul Walker. The actor which became very popular because of Fast and furious move serious. What is not commonly known is fact that he was not only an actor playing role of a guy absorbed by cars world. He truly loved cars and he was a part of many scenes which should have been recorded with help of stuntman. He was a very good driver and he died in a tragic accident racing a car. This one time he pushed it above its limits…

2.Like joke from Lion commercial says – 99% of accidents happen at home. Every sport can be dangerous. Some of them are not that safe by default, the other ones may become unsafe in certain circumstances. We have to THINK and WATCH OUT and doesn’t matter what we do. It’s the one and only way to protect ourselves and others.

    3. I’ve been playing racing games whole my life. I’ve driven all sort of WRC cars, I’ve raced around all of F1 famous tracks and drifted on the streets of countless cities on PC. Obviously I’m not racing on regular streets. But I was practicing some of my skills on closed parking lots or closed roads (like S2, before it was officially opened). I love driving that’s why I was reading and practicing a huge variety of driving techniques. Applies for both cars and motorbikes. And all of this… unfortunately makes me go crazy when on streets I see people who really can’t drive. I think I drive a little bit too fast vs. the limits, but so far so safe…

    1. As you said. Every sport can be dangerous. In some way due to same athletes. Today everyone want to be the best one. Everyone wanna win or break the limits. And then they try to use some dopes etc. And what guarantee they can have, that it's absolutely OK for them?
Is a win in tournament really worth of losing health or even life? I don't think so.

Have you heard about the schools of safe driving? Or maybe you've took part in something like that?

  10. 1. Have you heard about any similar histories of people who died or have become seriously injured doing things they loved?
Yes: Steve Irvin, The Crocodile Hunter. He died after being pierced in the chest by a stingray barb.
    2. Which sport is most dangerous in your opinion and why?
I think there are no such thing as dangerous sport. If you know what you're doing and you don't do anything risky you'll be alrigth. When you're irresponsible you can harm yourself while chewing bubblegum..
    3. What kind of driver are you? Calm or rather mad etc.? Describe yourself!
    I'm not a driver.

Steve was already mentioned by Mikołaj. He was one of these people which I didn't know by name, but as most people I know him due to his passion :)

Also dangerous of daily life was mentioned. I've been choked by chewing gum so many times, haha :D
Or people with allergies ... Also not cool thing.

This person was mentioned in above article. It is Robert Kubica, probably everyone have heard about his accident during some race. His hand was seriously injured. It blocked him from returning to F1 race, but he is a tough guy and he is still racing but not in FI races. I keep my fingers crossed for him.
      2. Which sport is most dangerous in your opinion and why?
The first thought that came to me is box. This people These people receive thousands of hits to the head, in the stomach and other body parts. It is not healthy, I saw may people after box career who have problems with constructing sentences.
      3. What kind of driver are you? Calm or rather mad etc.? Describe yourself!
Of course calm. I am aware of dangers on the road. I try to keep safe me and people who are travel with me.

    2. I can agree with you. For me Kubica is one of the best racing drivers ever. I hope that he will get many chances for winning in races in near future!

'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin have been stabbed hundreds of times by stingray. Steve was known for his controversial TV shows. He was an Australian nature expert who made many documentary series about deadly animals. He definitely died doing what he loved.

    2. Which sport is most dangerous in your opinion and why?
I think the most dangerous and deadly hobby is alpinism. There are many people who died trying to reach highest mountains. On the ways to the mountain tops there are many nameless graves.

    3. What kind of driver are you? Calm or rather mad etc.? Describe yourself!
I don't have driver's license yet. If I had one I would definitely be a calm driver avoiding dangerous situations on a road.

  14. Didnt Michael Schumacher have a serious accident? I think it was skiing related but still it counts as an accident i guess.

I think most dangerous is Wingsuit flying

I like to think that im a good driver and I drive safe. Most of my friends agree on that :P

It's alwasy nice to see famous people, legends in action. They inspire to do great things. They know the risk, we see that they can die. This is huge thing! Not everybody can be best in the world. Now to archive it, to have gold and be the best people need to sacrifice whole life. It's big price for glory and to be saved in history as winner. Kulig, Schumacher or McLaren are examples of great spirit and strong will. They try to work with they passion and be better everyday. I think pilot, firefigher or police officer are quite dangerous. They can died everyday, this is propably hard to manage. I like to drive calm, I like to listen music then and focus on thought on my mind. I don't rush to be a little bit faster
