Week 5 [06.05 - 12.05] The World Obesity Federation

The World Obesity Federation

The research, which was carried out in 2016 by the World Obesity Federation, shows that in 2025, as many as 2.7 billion people will be overweight. It's one in four people in the world, and the number of obese people increases by 1.2% each year.  We can compare it to the research from 2014, when 30% of the population was overweight, it means 2.1 billion people.

In Poland, 64% of men and 49% of women are overweight, which gives us the 5th place in Europe. The United States has the biggest problem, winning all rankings. The Research Institute for Health Metrics over Evaluation (IHME) states Americans account for 13% of the world's overweight population. What is worrying, children weigh a lot more. Compared to the current situation, children are 50% heavier than in 1980.
Poland has the same number of obese as Norway, but in the European ranking, Great Britain wins, followed by Ireland.

Doctors connect obesity with various factors, such as:
  1.  genetic- this is an excessive accumulation of fat, which is caused by some genetic diseases.  (Carpenter's disease or Cohen's syndrome);
  2. biological-  associated, for example, with endocrine disorders (hypothyroidism);
  3. pharmacological-  related to medicines, e.g. insulin;
  4. environmental-  associated with low physical activity;
  5. psychological- through depression, excessive overeating

Doctors believe that obesity is a disease of the modern world.  What fight is recommended?  A well-chosen diet, above all movement and care for your own body.  What is the reason for obesity?

Excessive stress, lack of time for food and a comfortable life.  Work that is stressful affects our psyche and the greedy approach to proper nutrition has a huge impact on our weight and well-being.  The already comfortable life leads to lack of traffic - uber, a car.  People stopped practicing and began to sit more at the TV or computer. How to fight it? Healthy eating, movement and sleep. All these factors affect our well-being and health. What do we mean by healthy eating? When we are working in an office, we often forget to eat anything, and when hunger comes, we eat actually anything.  Sweets, fast food. 5 meals a day at appropriate intervals allow proper functioning of our stomach. The movement has a good effect on the work of the heart, cholesterol and positively affects the functioning of the intestines, stomach, kidneys and liver. Sleep is essential and it's time to regenerate the cells and tissues of our body that work all the time.
We should seriously look at this problem because it grows with each passing year.  According to the World Health Organization in the US in 2030 over 40% of the population will be overweight.

1. What do you think about the current situation?
2. What are you doing to eat well?
3. If you could, what would you change in this situation?

  1. I read a report recently, as I remember it concerns United States. There was said that more people than before obey nutrition recommendation, despite of that average weight of people is higher. For many years experts recommend us to eat mainly grains, fat was abandoned. Now vegetables are most important and not all kinds of fat are harmful (as we heard in attached video). Ones eggs are healthy, than make you ill, in newest recommendation of EAT-Lancet commission advice to drink a glass of whole milk every day, but in the same time, but allowed amount of diary fat per day is zero! So what I think and what I do? I think we should not believe experts and I don’t obey their rules. For about two years I have been constantly checking what is helpful in my diet and what is not. I eat much more fat, eggs, beef than recommended and much less grains, carbohydrates and diary. My blood tests are better than before, I‘m still slim, less tired and sleepy, suddenly some health problems, which I had had for years, disappeared. So what we can do in this situation? Stop listening to experts and start to listen our bodies.

  2. I think that current situation is really extreme. On one hand we have big problem with obesity but on the other hand for few years we have fit culture fashion and more and more people are getting really into it. I was in the same situation few years ago, I was obese (over 108 kg) and it wasn't any of points You've mentioned in post. Main problem was the wrong mindset. I knew it was bad but no one really showed me how great is to change lifestyle and how many benefits You can get from healthy lifestyle. For me the trigger was moving out from parents, job change and extreme heartbreak when I got myself to change my life. Since then I've started working out few times a week, got new diet, cooking every day and building muscles what is almost a 180 degree turn in my life. When I saw how this change influenced my life I'm not able to eat not healthy for long time, when I'm looking back I know that I don't what to live that life again and it helps me a lot. What would i change in current situation? The best thing to help fight obesity is to convict people how many advantages give You fit life, what can You really get and how obesity can end in long term. But not only mention those effects but take them to hospitals and show what really can happen to them when they won't get together and change their diet.

  3. The numbers are frightening. More and more people are overweight and obese. Personally I have the opposite problem. By nature I’m really thin and for me it’s really hard to put on a few pounds. Even if I manage to do that after some time I come back to my previous weight. Currently my diet is not especially healthy but to be honest I have no time to cook so usually I eat something out. I try not to choose fast foods and similar stuff because it’s really bad for human’s health. I would introduce some program that would increase self-awareness and explain people what they can do step by step in order to live healthy.

  4. In my opinion, obesity is a serious problem these days and I see it everywhere. I realize that people dont care much for their physical activity and for what they eat. I was interested in sports and the body during physical exertion and what he did every day because I practiced every day I practiced sport. I'm lucky because everyone in my family is slim and we have such a gene just. I have a problem, because I need a lot of calories to gain kilos. It is certainly a smaller problem than obesity. Over time, people spend more and more time on computers at home and at work, so I think that obesity will be even more visible over a lot the years.

  5. In my opinion it's not that serious problem to the society. People are architects of their own fate and I can see nowadays that many people, despite their age, are thinking about their weight and health. They're even getting obssesed with this whole fit lifestyle, which at certain level is a good thing. It all comes to the question if we actually care about that and it is up to us to take care of our own health. I try to keep my diet as healthy as possible. I even used to calculate calories for each meal during a day. At the moment there is no such need, but I try to think about the healthiness of a meal before buying/preparing it. In order to stop the propagation of obesity, a strong cultural fundaments combined with marketing and involvement of the most influential companies are needed.

  6. I think that in some cases obesity is a problem. Sometimes I see children who are just fat, because their parents think that making them happy by buying fast food and computer games is a great idea. In this cases, it is only parents' fault. In the other hand, current trends are forcing us to count calories in every meal and pay attention only to number of calories (less is better) no matter what chemistry we would take. I do not follow any diet, I prefer home-made food, but sometimes I have no problem to go with friends to fast-food restaurant. Instead, I try to exercise regularly, especially by running or cycling. Maybe it does not give such significant effects but I feel good with myself.

  7. 1. What do you think about the current situation?
It's bad, mostly because of sitting lifestyle. If we won't educate in case of danger of obesity, situation won't change. Sport can be really exciting but you have to change something in your life and feel the need to move.
    2. What are you doing to eat well?
I'm currently on a diet made by dietician and I exercise 3 times a week with personal trainer. So when you exercise, you have bigger appetite but with a diet (which I think is more important than exercising) you can really be less obese.
    3. If you could, what would you change in this situation?
I think educate, expand time of physical education in schools. But it's hard because mostly it's personal decision who you want to be.

  8. 1.
The current situation it's not very good from the report I've seen but the worse part is that it will get worse. There any many ways why it happens but we as humans can make a biggest change to avoid that. It's easy to say to just start eating better, exercising more and have a good night of sleep. If you don’t want to start healthy then nothing will help you. This is really true when you are working in the office with easy access to the snacks all the time. The temptation is too high sometimes.
    2.
I don’t eat meat, I avoid dairy and try to eat enough protein. I consume smaller portions but more often throughout the day. It also helps to not have any junk food in the house. If you don’t buy it then you can’t eat it. Good amount of sleep also helps to develop better eating schedules.
    3.
Educated people definitely. I would start early in school like kindergarten to show the benefits of healthier diet and cons of the unhealthy one.

  9. I believe that obesity is one of the worst diseases. Why? Because in most cases we freely choose to be obese.
It's our own choice how and what we eat and do we workout or not. Obesity is just a result of gluttony and lazyness.
Of course there are cases when obesity is connected to other medical problems but I don't think that's the most common reason of obesity.
Or maybe I'm wrong? Maybe people just don't realize what they eat and how much they eat? And the problem is that there is so much cheap and unhealthy food everywhere and the companies are to blame? It's easy to blame others...
I don't eat fast food pretty much at all. I have a very regular day schedule with 4 meals and 8 hours of sleep. I beleive that more campaigns are needed to educate people in that matter and maybe some regulations about unhealthy food?

  10. It would seem that in the era of fit life, many fit influencers and personal trainers, statistics on obesity will be more optimistic.
I was obese a few years ago. I lost 25 kg and I feel great, the comfort of my life has improved significantly.
First of all, I feel healthier all the time I play sports I love to ride a bike. In the summer season I always change from a car to a bicycle. Diet is a very important thing when it comes not only to slimming but also to our health. It is necessary to change eating habits, it may seem difficult but our body will thank us for this - well-being, energy and the happy to live. Although I have to admit that I lost my first 10 kg with a health fasting. For 14 days I drank only water. The whole preparation for fasting lasted about a month, I stopped drinking alcohol, eating meat, I tried to cleanse the body of toxins. The fasting itself was not easy and it was even harder to get out of it. You had to control everything so that you do not hurt yourself but it was possible without yo-yo effect and with another success and 15 kg thanks to healthy diet and exercise. A health fasting helped me get into healthy eating. Maybe it is quite drastic but it helped me. Of course, I am not persuading anyone to do this.

  11. 1. I think nowadays there is big trend to eat healthy and exercise which is a great thing! More and more people are actually paying attention to what they eat on daily basis, reading the ingredient lists on the back of the products they buy etc.
    2. Me and my fiancee are keeping attention to what we buy, we try to avoid sweetened products, prepare our meals etc. She's a lot more consistent then I am. From time to time I'm still eating some unhealthy food, but I try to avoid any fast foods though.
    3. It's hard to say, I think promoting healthy life style is great way to get to younger generation.

  12. 1. I am actually a bit surprised with World Obesity Federation report. I never made any research but I thought that currently people are trending toward health conscious eating. Maybe it is more US problem than EU problem?

    2. Personally I order fit catering. Currently I am using NTFY (Nice To Fit You) and before Maczfit.

    3. I am not sure. Healthy life style is already promoted everywhere. TV, social media, internet or magazines. What else can we do to encourage others? I guess not much.

    3. If you could, what would you change in this situation?

Obesity is a serious threat to well being and future of human kind. When I think of it I bring back scenes from the animated movie WALE-E, where the survivors of Earth population are looking like balloons filled with jelly and move solely using some floating chairs, there is much more to it but its another topic :) I found it funny when after first article this week which was about watching TV series this one was the next:)
So what to do about it ... already said so many times, eat well and on regular basis, exercise or just walk (even having a dog helps) and try to have enough sleep that help you regenerate and get rid of some stress in your body. Of course easier said then done, I think we need a lot of self-denial to keep this ongoing, but I guess its worth it :)

  14. I think that obesity is really a serious problem. People probably don't realize the consequences. Atherosclerosis and hypertension are just the beginning of a huge list of diseases that obesity can lead to.

I never had time to take care of my diet. I ate irregularly and unhealthily. I often visited fast food, because you can eat very quickly in this way. Until I decided to go on a box diet. I think it's a great solution. Every day I gets five healthy meals. I really recommend it.

It's a hard question. I do not think that I would have any influence, but as I mentioned above. I would recommend going on a box diet, which is really a great solution for everyone.

  15. 1. What do you think about the current situation?
Obesity has become a serious problem - you do not have to look at statistics, you just have to look around to see how many people are obese.

    2. What are you doing to eat well?
I think that the quality of meals is important. Healthy food should consist of healthy ingredients that are usually not cheap. The universal truth comes to mind - if you want something to be done well - you have to do it yourself. This slogan also hugs food.

    3. If you could, what would you change in this situation?
You can change the children's eating habits most effectively. I believe that there should be no place in schools for unhealthy snacks and drinks. Giving children money for food is not appropriate.

  16. Obesity is a really big problem. I think this is one of the main problem that will be only growing, because we are aware of it and we are doing nothing. Fat which we see is only tip of the iceberg. Fat is also inside us. You know that our vines aren’t big enough to deal with some level of fat in our body. It can lead to many disease e.g. of the circulator system. I’m cooking mostly at home and buy vegetables from local market not from Biedronka and eat 5 or 6 meals a day, because I want to prevent all of consequences that comes with fat getting. If I can change something I would implement obligatory physical training in every company. Not every day, but 2 times a week, just for 20 minutes. This should help :)

  17. Obesity problem is increasing, as our life standards are getting higher. Also, some of us might choose playing games or watching Netflix series more often than sport, so the problem is real. From the other hand, some of us work hard to stay fit (in Warsaw it's a really common trend). So it really depends for each of us.
To eat well every day, I'm trying to avoid sweets and prepare meals as often as I can. Also, I'm trying to use less sugar for coffee and tea, avoid cola. Moreover, exercise or playing football is the last ingredient.
If I could change something, definitely it would be amount of sugar in each product. It's really addicting, especially for children. Also from what I have read, simple carbohydrates are the main purpose of obesity, in most cases.

  18. In my opinion, the global problem of obesity is associated with many bad lifestyle habits. Too many people prefer to lead the lifestyle of a “coach potato” instead of adopting a healthy diet and exercising on a regular basis. A sedentary lifestyle has become much more common, with people spending most of their day behind their desks or on their couch, with limited time for being active.

Moreover, a “rushed” lifestyle also results in the lack of time for preparing healthy, home-made meals and opting for cheap substitutes such as fast-foods, and thus leading to the development of bad dietary habits. Finally, a stressful lifestyle could increase the likelihood of “diseases of affluence”, including cardiovascular disease, cancers, strokes, etc, and thus decreasing life expectancies worldwide.

Moreover, people are not aware of what a balanced diet should look like and often consume excessive meat with insufficient fresh fruit and vegetables and are not even aware that it could be a cause of them being overweight.

In order to eat well, I try to prepare my meals at home, research healthy and nutritious recipes and avoid fast food. Moreover, I exercise on a weekly basis.

In order to change the situation, I would opt to increase the awareness of the importance of healthy eating and exercising, as well as make the general public more aware of the repercussions of an unhealthy lifestyle. This could be done through public campaigns and through classes in schools.

  19. Indeed, obesity becomes a civilization disease and many people suffer from this. On the other hand, I observe people around me and see that more and more of them become aware of the healthy lifestyle. Huge number of people commute to work by bike on a daily basis, attend gym regurarly (I tend to visit gym rather late, about 10 pm. To avoid crowds, and even then, there are many people there). Companies also try to support active and sporty employees, In my workplace I have 4 well equipped bathroms with showers and clothers dryers. And in the morning they are all occupied – another proof of how active lifestyle is widespread among people these days (at least among IT people). About fighting obesity - recently I decided to give up eating sweets and drinking coke (Disclaimer: I was not obese, I was “in the middle” according to BMI –just had two kilos more that I wanted). This connected with 1 hour of physical activity per day let me reduce my weight quickly. My colleague regularly orders so called fit catering, but does not seem to be very satifsfied (for me, this food just “stinks”). I think the first step should be definitely resigning from different kinds of sweets.

  20. I think that we all should control ourselves, the problem is that we can only do that ourselves. Sometimes we are weak - some people smoke cigarettes, drown their sorrows, others eat their fears. Maybe if we were happier such problems would dissappear? Everyone would care to be beautiful and healthy. Maybe we are lazy? If so, then we need some motivation, some reward, to take the next step. I am aware that eating better quality food will increase the length of my life, however sometimes laziness wins. Eating fast foods from time to time will not kill you, it's the eating habits what matters in general.

  21. Overweight and obese is a huge problem for twenty-first century society but the worst is that it is affecting young generations. When I look back junk food wasn't as popular as it is now. I can see how marketplace change our lives becouse of platforms such as Pyszne.pl and live styles that tend to do everything in a hurry we find ourselves is situation that eating unhealthy foods become a habit. In my opinion the hardest thing is to actually start working on your diet. I'm not talking about huge steps like changing your diet completely (still the best solution tho) but working regularly on small things will benefit your health and make you believe that you can change. I'm not on diet but I try to avoid deep frying cuisine and to always have a bottle of water with me. I never had a problem with a weight propably becouse of genetic and sport background I have but I believe uncontrollable eating is an addiction like any other and breaking with it demands a lot of work and strong will.

  22. 1. The current situation is not satysfying for sure. Apart from overweight people there is also a problem with anorexia and bulimia. In my opinion it's caused by fastfood being more popular especially for young people. Today we live in a hurry and we just think to get rid of the hunger no matter what. That's how unhealthy habits start.
    2. Lastly I've started to remove fastfood from my life. And I have to agree I feel much better now. My diet has removed lots of fat and salt with that. Instead of eating junk food I learned new dishes too. I also saved some money by not spending it in "restaurants". Moreover I'm a huge fan of cola and my next goal is to drink it much less and finally get rid of it.
    3. I'd start by educating young people of how healthy died is important. I'd also make something to make PE lessons in school to me more enjoyable. I remember that in my school we've been playing only basketball. There are so many sports disciplines that may be interesting so young people should have an opportunity to know them.

  23. The current situation does not look too good and many factors contribute to this. The main reason is in my opinion the lack of adequate education, although fortunately it is currently changing. There are more and more campaigns promoting healthy diet and physical activity. Ubiquitous facilities, stress, high pace of life encourage people not to care about their health. The main way that will help fight obesity and can bring long-lasting effects is education and awareness of people. as for me, I won the gene lottery and I'm slim. Despite this, I try to choose valuable products and not eat junk food too often. However, when it comes to the amount of food, mainly because I regularly go to the gym for several years, I do not have to count calories, the sky is the limit.

  24. 1. I think that nowadays people are way too much fat. It is because our lifestyle is fast. We don't have time to slowdown and have a good meal during the day so we go to fastfood restaurants such as McDonald or KFC to grab something fast and don't waste our time. The food that fastfood restaurants make are never healthy or hardly ever.
    2. I'm trying to cook myself as much as I can and as much time dose allow me to. I won't deny that I eat fastfoods but I'm to do it not so often.
    3. I think that people should have more time to eat and that healthy food should be more advertised. If I could change it I would make siesta time like it is in some countries around the world.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree that is a huge problem nowadays. There is a lot of reasons like genetic, food addiction or food availability. In my opinion in most cases it’s a mental problem. Currently we are living in permanent stress and many people choosing food to relive stress. What I’m doing to eat well? First of all, I’m trying to reduce meat in my diet. Also, I do sport a lot. If I could, what would I change in this situation? I think that education is most important. We need to show people that they could change their life, body and attitude but they have to really want.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The situation does not look good, but unfortunately we create such a "wonderful" scenario ourselves. As you mentioned in the article, lack of time, stress and comfort cause such a state of affairs. But on the other hand, is it really so? Obesity can be caused by various diseases. But as I see it, many people just can't stop eating and eating more and more. You can see many of them on the reality show "My 600-lb Life", but the participants are able to cope with obesity. So maybe there is some hope :)
First of all, I like to eat tasty, but also in moderation. And in order not to fall into obesity, I try to eat 5 meals a day, at similar times and above all I practically excluded fast food. Yes, sometimes there will be a small hamburger, but it's really rare :)
I don't like to play in the salvation of humanity, but I can take care of my immediate surroundings. What can I do for my loved ones? I can warn them, advise and support them in striving for a healthy lifestyle, without unnecessary kilograms :)

  27. 1. What do you think about the current situation?
I think that the current situation is really bad. People eating habits are horrible. Quality of food is awful (especially if we are talking about cheaper food, which most of the people buy). People are stressed, they don't have time to eat properly. General public health is in danger.
    2. What are you doing to eat well?
I work out a lot so I can eat a lot too. I have my diet planned, I eat a lot of vegetables, rice, groats, meat and even more protein from sources like sprouts.
    3. If you could, what would you change in this situation?
Promote healthy eating at schools. Kids are sent into life without even basic knowlege how to eat properly. Most of parents don't know how to feed their kids properly. Most of people discover how to eat properly in their 20's. It has to be sooner in life.

    1. I deplore obesity, I am trying to gain a good shape and I think people should too at least for their health. But if somebody doesn't care, it is their problem. I just don't understand people who are obese, by get offened when told so or when they despair, not doing anything to change it (unless the person has health issues which cannot be dealed).

    2. I try to choose good products in shops, eat little or none fastfood, eat many vegetables and make dinners in home.

    3. I do not understand the question. If I could I would make people health and in good shape in a magical blink of an eye. But otherwise in reality people shall do what they can about themselves.
