Week 6 [20.05 - 26.05] Coffee and Health

Good coffee is a permanent element of the morning of most of us, and is associated with many moments in our lives: everyday work, hobby or social meetings. But not only because of this is important to us - the healing properties of coffee are also increasingly noticed and appreciated all over the world where people drink more than three billion cups of coffee every day.
This precious drink is obtained from seeds of red fruits of evergreen shrubs of coffee trees (Coffea) grown in the tropic zone, mainly in Africa and South America. Most of the coffee consumed comes from Robusta or Arabica varieties. As much as 70 % world production is Arabica, aromatic and mild in taste. Robusta comes from south-east Asia and Brazil, has a slightly bitter taste and contains about 50 % more caffeine than Arabica. Its aroma, taste, power and aftertaste depend not only on the brewing method, but also on the type of coffee. The most well-known and valued ingredient of coffee that determines its healing properties is caffeine. Coffee found application in anti-migraine, anti-asthma, analgesic and stimulant preparations. The therapeutic dose is 200 mg, which translates into two cups of ground coffee. It is a source of valuable antioxidants that not only neutralize oxygen free radicals in the body and improve the body's cleansing of harmful toxins, but also improve the body's defenses against some cancer diseases. The caffeine, theophylline and theobromine present in the coffee beans act on the central nervous system, accelerating the flow of electrical impulses in the brain, or thought processes. It works so stimulating the mind, increases short-term memory and facilitates concentration, and long-term reduces the risk of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. Finally, caffeine also accelerates metabolism in the body, and especially fat burning. That is why coffee has become one of the desirable ingredients in preparations that help overweight. It should be remembered, however, that frequent pice of coffee with milk harms health, acids contained in coffee react to protein in milk, making digestion difficult. After drinking a cup of coffee and milk, eaten foods are in the stomach. Do not drink coffee because it weakens or increases the effects of some of them. In addition, caffeine stimulates the secretion of hydrochloric acid, which promotes the development of stomach ulcers.
It is impossible to list and describe all the positive aspects of drinking coffee. Both those having a beneficial effect on our health but also those that make it easier to start the day, or collect thoughts before a difficult conversation or exam. There are even more types and ways of preparation. Let's enjoy and savor its taste, at the same time taking care of our health. These days, it is quite a rare combination.

What is your favorite way of making coffee?

  1. 1. I drink coffee daily. Sometimes twice a day but usually once in the morning.
    2. Arabica. There is no sense in drinking robusta because it is cheaper and therefore less tasty, however it is still being used in some traditional Italian blends but it is just for money saving, not for better taste.
    3. Moka or brewing via Hario dripper. Those are the easiest ways to get a decent coffee if you don't have an expensive espresso machine in my opinion.
    4. No.
    5. I would never spent more money on coffee than it actually costs. Paying for brands is just a waste of money. That's why I never go to Starbucks. I don't know what coffee they use but it tastes awful and I'm sure many will agree with me.
    6. No. I drink as much as I feel is good for me. Two cups a day is my maximum, more could give me anxiety.

    1. Honestly I never didn't drink coffee from Starbucks but I believe it taste horrible. I drink my best coffee in Italy, simply espresso in small café.

  2. I drink coffee three or four times a year, I’m definitely not a gourmet. I my family house, there was always only instant coffee, which I hate, so for many years taste of coffee was a taste of artificial powder. It didn’t convinced me to this dark liquid then and I’m still not convinced. In general I don’t drink beverages with caffeine, I stopped drinking tea, I’ve never liked Coke and I have never tried drinks like Tiger.

  4. I'm addicted to coffee. I cant imagine living without her anymore. The first step before starting my work is to have a cup of coffee. Then I feel the flow of enigma and positive thoughts. He drinks one sometimes two to a maximum. I hope that she will find more positive aspects of drinking coffee because she feels that she gives a lot of brain work. However, I am always afraid of gastric ulcers because I often only drink coffee in the morning and later I feel pain in my stomach. The only downside is that he can quickly go to the toilet. I like trying out some coffees, but I always drink Arabica coffee from a coffee machine. I hate black coffe, but I love coffee with milk. If they discover more positive properties of coffee, I think I will not be more careful because my stomach can not take more coffee than two glasses.

  5. I'm afraid I can't say much about coffe because I don't drink it at all. One reason is that I don't like how it tastes.
Another reason is that repels me from drinking coffee is that people drink it to stay focused, wake up etc. and they can't start a day without coffee - they get addicted.
In oposition to everyone that need coffee to work I decided that I will not use it to wake myself up - if I'm tired it means that I need rest not to drink coffee.
But when you write about all those benefits that comes from drinking coffee maybe I should ty it? I will definetely explore this topic :)

  6. How often / do you drink coffee?

It depends on intensity of the day, but statistically 2-3 cups. Even answering this question I'm right now in the middle of my second cup today!

What is your favorite coffee variety?

For real coffee's-OG I think it's similar sin like drinking whisky with cola but my most favorite variation is strong americano with few drops of milk!

What is your favorite way of making coffee?

I used to love good coffee machine then I was experimenting with cold press, but for some time I'm getting best taste from just regular boiling water combined with manually ground quality coffee seeds. I'm in love with this strong, raw taste.

    Are you a coffee gourmet?

I'm not feeling like the one and I think that I gave some more clue about it in other answers.

Do you ever spend more money on good coffee?

I was trying to experiment but I found out that I'm not sophisticated enough to fill the subtle difference. For a long time I just have my favorite one which is Lavazza Oro, so nothing fancy.

Will the awareness of the beneficial properties of coffee make you more likely to drink?

To be honest it doesn't work that way for me. I'm good with the amount that I'm consuming right now and I'm more than happy if I don't have to reduce it!

  7. I'm sorry, but I can't answer on any of these question you asked. I'm not a coffee drinker, I tried maybe once or twice, but this taste is not for me. Personally, I usually drink black tea, but lastly I prefer to choose water. Your article is very interesting by the way, but I think that I'm not a right recipient.

  8. I drink coffee 2-3 times a day. Usually in the morning and at work. It happens more often when I have a lot of work or study and I have to spend some time.
My favorite is robusta, because it is much stronger than Arabika and more interesting in taste. Green coffee is also very interesting.
I really like to brew coffee in a coffee perculator. I don't do this on a daily basis, because I do not have time for it, but when there is a moment, I really like drinking coffee in this preparation process.
I like coffee, but I can't say I'm a foodie. I do not know the varieties, how they are prepared and how each kind should be brewed.
I do not tend to spend a lot of money on coffee. Usually it is a normal coffee to brew in a mug.
I think not. I think that I drink too much coffee because of work and studies. I will stay with the amount it is now.

    2. I don't have one. I drink what is at hand. I’m not very picky about coffee.

    3. It's just coffee from a traditional coffee machine. This is not a ritual for me.

    4. Definitely not. I don't attach any importance to that.

    5. No, I mainly pay attention to the fact that it would be ground coffee.

    6. No, I have no need to drink more coffee.

  10. Typically I drink one cup of coffee a day (mostly espresso). I prefer Arabica because of its mild taste but most coffeehouse chains (like Green Caffe Nero, Costa, etc.) serve blends. Typically 70% of arabica to 30% of robusta. May favorite way of making coffee is espresso from coffee machine. I hate coffee with milk and for me it's hard to understand why people drink this beverage. I'm not a coffee gourmet but I can definitely distinguish between good and bad quality coffee. I often drink coffee in cafes and doing it frequently is not the cheapest thing ;-)
I used to read a lot about health benefits of coffee but the main reason I drink it is extraordinary taste.

It depends is it day off, or working day. During work it's something about 1 or 2 cups a day.
What is your favorite coffee variety?
I'm not that big coffee lover. When I want to drink coffee longer I always order big latte, when I'm in hurry it's always flat white.
What is your favorite way of making coffee?
    I don't have any.
    Are you a coffee gourmet?
Not really, I like to drink coffee during some meetings or coding, but it's not like an addiction. It depends on day.
Do you ever spend more money on good coffee?
Not really. In work we have green cafe nero with worker's discounts and sometimes I just try new types of coffee, but never paid more than usual.

I wouldn't call myself a gourmet, since all I care is if the milk isn't spoiled but I'm actually able to feel difference between different types of coffees so I might still become one.
I don't think so. Even coffee from Costa Coffee is quite expensive for me so probably not.

  15. Lots of questions :p I drink coffee every day, but not in the morning, rather in the afternoon. I drink it usually at work. Three months ago, they have changed coffee machine and since then… coffee become terrible :( I’m not expert at this field, I like Americano with milk without sugar and I’m happy, when it’s strong enough. If I know, that coffee will be better, I will pay more. So free coffee is not the best I can get, so sometimes I go to Aioli, because there you can get breakfast to it for 1PLN :D

Than I grab my italian Moka Pot and make some expresso, than add bit more water to make Americana and on ocassion add some soy milk ;) Then I take a sip and I can open my eyes :p
Im lucky enough to have full time barista at my office, so I'm going to give him a visit, and grab some nice coffee that He will encourage me to drink :) I love coffee, I drink something like 2 or 3 cups a day, I just love the taste of it, although I'm not crazy (or rich) enough to always have Kopi Luwak in my cupboard :)

At home I'm using AeroPress to make my coffee, I'm constantly trying new coffee recipes. 20. If I am at work this day, I drink 5 cups a day, on holidays, I limit myself to three. I am very sad about the fact that there is no coffee machine at work, and I have to "bother" with instant coffee.

Favorite coffee at work is the one that the company currently buys - it is enough that it does not have to be wonderful.

At home, I drink coffee from a coffee machine, most often Arabica.

I plan to visit a specialist coffee shop one day and try different varieties, not rely on what the manufacturer can offer.

Just as the awareness of the health-promoting properties of coffee will not increase my and so much consumption, so harmful effect of coffee with milk will not cause that I will give it up.

  21. I drink coffee every day. I like her taste, unfortunately I usually drink coffee with milk, because I like it the most. In my work drinking coffee has become an interaction between people. My whole team goes together and then we talk about non-work related topics. I think it can be compared to going out to a cigarette, but it is a much healthier way. For me, good coffee is one that tastes, it does not have to be from unique grains. I think the best coffee I've been drinking so far was from Starbuck or Costa. However, it's hard to tell because I do not know about coffee. I drink Green Jacobs coffee everyday.

  22. I hardly ever drink coffee and I don't have a favourite variety or a way of making coffee. Maybe I just never drank a good coffee. Since coffee have good medical properties I might start to drink it more often. However I read that caffeine in coffee increases catecholamines, your stress hormones and young adults who had high blood pressure and drank multiple cups of coffee per day also had four times the risk of having a heart attack.

  23. I can call myself a coffe lover. This glorious beverage is one of my favourite. Usually I have like 2 up to 3 coffees a day and I drink the first one always once I get to the office. I do not really have a favourite coffee variety, I do enjoy drinking most of them and there are hardly any times when the coffee does not taste well enough. I have always got this one routine for coffee making. 2 table spoons of coffee, hot water and waiting few minutes until its perfectly brewed, not so complicated I know. I can call myself a coffee gourmet, however as previously mentioned I do not have my favourite coffee species. I am capable of spending a lot of money just to have the good coffee. I am glad that there are many coffee points in my office. I was aware of those medical aspects of drinking coffee, I drink it because I love the taste.

  24. How often / do you drink coffee?
Usually one coffee a day. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Depends on the day.
What is your favorite coffee variety?
I don't really have favourite coffee variety. I have to drink what is available at work. At home I am using capsule coffee maker, I am not really sure what kind of coffee it's in those capsules, never researched them to get more information about the coffee itself.
What is your favorite way of making coffee?
In coffee machine, I am not making coffee any other way.
    Are you a coffee gourmet?
I don't think so. I like coffee a lot but I am not really paying attention to it as long as I like the taste.
Do you ever spend more money on good coffee?
Sometimes I buy more expensive coffee, but it's not that important for me. I probably should look into it, because I have been recommended some great, expensive coffee types in the past by my friends.
Will the awareness of the beneficial properties of coffee make you more likely to drink?
I was aware of those properties, so... no. I am gonna drink coffee like before, once or more a day :)

I really rarelly drink coffee. You can think it is weird but I often feel sleepy after it.
I do not like cofee taste so much, especially such casual. I drank a few times really tasty coffee and I liked it quite a lot, but usually the coffees I drink are not so great unfortunatelly.
So I am not a coffee gourmet for sure. Even expensive coffees from coffee bars are not so tasty for me. That is why I do not like spend money on not so nice drinks. But I drink coffee sometimes, usually because of just its health and stimulative features.

  26. I drink coffee twice, sometimes three times a day. Unfortunately, it is often soluble coffee. I also often go to cafes where I like to drink ice lattes. 28. I am not a coffee lover at
all and therefore has no knowledge of its types. I am not convinced whether coffee is actually healthy (but cannot refute the scientists researches results) – I do not feel weel after it and have pretty high blood pressure - basicall, but one of my colleague can drink 4 cups of coffee and still is too sleepy to work.
One of the benefits in my company is free coffee. As it has pretty acid taste (on the other hand, thanks to this, it can quickly bring me to life ), I do not like it particularly and drink pretty rarely (only when I am extremely tired after unslept night and not able to get down to working). For me the most important aspect of coffee is socializing people. Whenever I call my team members to “coffee” – I just mean to gather with them to talk – actually everyone drinks what he likes (sometimes no one drinks coffee) For that reason, I believe coffee is the indispensable part of almost of all companies social life.

  30. There is no doubt that I’m a huge fan of coffee, but I wouldn’t tell about myself that I'm a coffee gourmet. I drink a few cups of coffee every day, this is already my routine. My body demands caffeine awhile after awakening. Honestly speaking, when I come to work, just after turning on your computer, I make coffee. I usually drink coffee from a machine, but sometimes I drink instant coffee. The second way is without any doubt worse than freshly ground seeds of my favourite Arabica coffee from coffee maker. I know that well-selected coffee is not cheap and it's served in the finest coffee bars in my town. So, I think that it is important to find some time to go to the coffee place with or without friends and rest for a while. Despite the fact that a lot of scientist think that caffeine have also a negative impact on our organism, but I’m convinced that within reasonable limits, coffee can make me feel better.

  31. I drink coffee quite often, especially on days when I need to be productive. I usually have a cup or two in the morning, made in my Dolce Gusto coffee machine. My favourite type is café au lait (coffee with milk). It has become my favourite way of preparing coffee because of how convenient and fast it is! Although it is a bit more expensive than regular coffee, but I am happy to spend a little extra just to save myself the hassle. However, I do not consider myself a coffee gourmet as I am never too picky with the coffee I drink. I don’t think that the awareness of the beneficial properties of coffee will make me more likely drink it, as it is already a part of my routine, although I will certainly feel better while doing it!

  32. I rarely drink coffee to be honest. Like few times in a month.
My favourite coffee variety is Arabica but in fact I’m not specialist and I’ve only tried a few of them. To be honest I’m not a huge fan of changes, when I like something I’d stick to it.
I never make coffee by myself. I treat coffee as a thing to meet with my friends. I always visit my favourite café and waiter already knows what I prefer. So I wouldn’t call myself as a coffee gourmet.
I always do and for me it’s really worth. I’d rather spend more money on one cup for a week and have a nice talk with friends than be addicted to a coffee. I just go sleep earlier and then I’m able to be ready from early morning. And I hope my heart is satisfied with it.
I’m quiet shocked with this pros of drinking a coffee. But there is a statement “It is only the dose which makes a thing poison”. So I’d stick to my frequency of drinking.

  33. I drink coffee once or twice a day. I don't have my favorite variety, but I prefer soft coffee than strong ones.
My favorite way of making coffee is by making one or two strong espressos, pour it to cup. Then cup is 1/4 filled. I add one or two spoons of sugar, and add water to fill 3/5 of cup. In the end I add milk and mix everything trying to melt every sugar that is left on the bottom of cup.I'm not coffee gourmet, because I've never needed any new, better tastes of coffee. I spend little more money on coffee when I'm buing coffee as gift. Because I know about, how beneficial properties coffee has I try to drink it over energy drinks.
