Week 3 [03-09.04.2017] Virtual Reality

The purpose of virtual reality goggles is to let the user imagine being in a completely different place. While sitting in your own room, look through such goggles and you might feel as  if  you were walking on the surface of the Moon, speeding in a carriage of a roller coaster or watching a movie in a large cinema hall.

What is the future for virtual reality? The technology is evolving rapidly, and what we even wouldn’t imagine a couple of years ago, today is a fact. For now VR is just a toy, but will it ever become something more? Is this just a short-term fashion like 3D was, or will it become something important in our lives? Will we use it to communicate with friends, or maybe even become someone else to make new ones? When the world in VR becomes more attractive, will we want to live in the real one any longer? Will we even be able to tell them apart? You might consider that everything we experience in life is in fact just an interpretation made by our minds, the electrical signals which describe our surrounding,  making us believe they are real. It would mean  the reality exists only in our brains. So could we trick it? Could we just break all bonds and create our own reality?

In such an imagined world we will be like gods, but at the same time we might become slaves of our creations incapable to live among other people. Could we become slaves of our desires? What if our biggest and most unreachable dreams become available in VR? Will we be able to give them up to live our lives, or give up  the real life?

  1. 1. Is virtual reality worth paying attention to?
    – Yes, I think it is. Nowadays virtual reality as it's said in the article is just a toy. Somewhere in future when virtual reality won't be needed googles to work it will have major impact on everybody

    2. Do you think that VR Goggles may have a major impact on our health?
    – To be honest, I don't know. I guess it might have bad impact on vision like every screen.

    3. Do you own any virtual reality headset now? How do you use it?
    – No, I don't. It's too expensive and like it was said before, it's just a toy.

    1. If you are interested in buying one of such VR gogles, but don't want to spend much money on it, you might consider obtaining Google Cardboard or something alike, which can be used with a smartphone.

  2. 1. It is something that we may have attention on, but with a rational thinking. In movie called "Demolition Man" it is shown how we can use VR goggles in future. If you are into this topic you should view this movie.

    2. Yes it can cause a lot of demage in our health condition. We can lose our sight or even strengh.

    3. No I don't use it, because, as Mr Carol said, it is too expensive, and I can't afford on them.

I think yes, thanks to virtual reality we can create visualizations that will help us create new projects
Virtual reality allows us to break away from everyday bored life.

    2. Do you think that VR Goggles may have a major impact on our health?

I have no idea. I think with people who are mentally ill they may be exposed to situations when they will not be able to distinguish the normal world from the virtual world.

    3. Do you own any virtual reality headset now? How do you use it?

I do not have, I do not have time for such gadgets.. i love my real life :)

    1. Just give it a shot. Even an unexpensive gogles might give you a good imertion and bring you some fun. I personally like 360 degrees recordings which can take you to places all over the world. Within couple minutes you can visit very distant places, which saves you a lot of time :)

  4. Thanks for very interesting article.
I think fame of VR is too big in past years. I understand that this technology is very medial (mobile technology not grow already fast). In my opinion this sector are not ready for commercial usage, it is too young. I treat it as technology demo, but people not have many ideas for usage VR. Interaction in closed reality is many interesting, but not natural for us. yet.
I love augmented reality (AR). It is more natural, but most harder for implementation.

Each of technology have a smart impact for health. Watch TV 24 hours per day ar not health. It it the same of VR. First TV with picture tube are not health. This is technology progress. Everythink before us. ;)

Yes, I have primitive gogle - cardboard. I usaged this device only for my engineering work.

I think so. We need change from everyday chores. This can help to solve our imagination and positively affect us.

    2. Do you think that VR Goggles may have a major impact on our health?

Maybe only for the eyes, but I have no idea. I have not heard of any health problems related to using vr googles.

    3. Do you own any virtual reality headset now? How do you use it?

No, I don't. I'm thinking about getting a vr googles.

  6. I think it’s very dangerous. I’m very pessimistic about virtual reality. Nowadays, we have a lot o problems with the Internet and social deviation. Children have trouble with contact with peers. They prefer to play games than physical activities. Virtual reality it’s fantastic tools, but me must know happy medium.

It’s hard to say if VR Googles may have a major impact on our health. It depends on question context. Computer are very eye-exhausting, so maybe VR Googles also? I don’t know. Time will tell.

I don’t own any VR headset now. I don’t want any kind if this devices. I’m big fun of REALity!

I remember VR boom around year 2000. Expectations were big, many thought that this technology will develop fast, but it didn't happen. VR technology for another many years was abandoned. Nowadays it's one of the mainstream technologies and in my opinion it's definitely worth paying attention to.

Do you think that VR Goggles may have a major impact on our health?
I don't know really, that's what you can tell after long-term tests. For now we only know that it causes headaches in some cases and it's not very suitable for people with diseases like epilepsy.

Do you own any virtual reality headset now? How do you use it?
No, I don't own any VR headset. Telling the truth I'm not very keen on buying VR set, like in others comments I think that is too expensive for now.

  8. 1. Is virtual reality worth paying attention to?
I thing that it depends. I hear voices of delight about VR, but I thing that human is created to say in nature. I can't imagine to staying in virtual world for a long hour... The best metaphor for this technology is the music video for the song I Got U by Duke Dumont. Actor is fascinated by "super" virtual world, extremely different from the real gray. But my question is how long will it be? Without real feelings, without real preple without intimacy with another person.

    2. Do you think that VR Goggles may have a major impact on our health?
Based on the first point of course I thing so. Particularly negatively this can affect our mental health. In addition, our eyes were created to look away. At VR we force them to titanium effort.

    3. Do you own any virtual reality headset now? How do you use it?
I have not bought or used it yet, but if I come across this opoortunity, I will be happy to test it (out of curiosity).

Yes I think it definetly is. Finally this technology got it's time. Concepts and prototypes were around for decades but now they are affordable and quite comfortable for common users. I've heard that some kids now don't want to play games that arent VR.

    2. Do you think that VR Goggles may have a major impact on our health?
Regulary using it for too long probably do. But I don't think that it would damage peoples health badly.

    3. Do you own any virtual reality headset now? How do you use it?
Unfortunatelly I don't, but I think thah I'll buy one in few years when this technology will be more mature.

  10. 1. Is virtual reality worth paying attention to?

In my opinion definitely yes. This is the future. Technology is everywhere and it is unassembled element of our life. In the future it will be normal for instance in factories to organize workshops for new employees with such devices.

    2. Do you think that VR Goggles may have a major impact on our health?

I suppose that it might have bad impact on our eyes and vision but it depends how long you use such device.

    3. Do you own any virtual reality headset now? How do you use it?

Yes currently I have HTC Vive - I am using it to play adventures games.

    1. Klaudia I also like adventure games. But I've never played them with the virtual reality hedset. What games would you recommend?

  11. Of course googles VR have an impact on our health. It is like each other game but this game is more addictive because we have impression that we are inside different world. I have had chance to try VR and it is fantastic. The strong points VR are that we need to move not only sit in front of TV or monitor. Recently I dreamed of game where I will can enter my body inside . Personally I don't have VR and I'm not going to buy it because I can't start playing new game. When I start I have problem with ending. The fact is that it is the future and the great technological leap

  12. 1. Is virtual reality worth paying attention to?
It is better and better year by year, so maybe in nearest future it will really approach reality? Then it will be worth of paying attention in my opinion. Now it's just a "interesting thing".

    2. Do you think that VR Goggles may have a major impact on our health?
Of course - e.g. for our eyes. Or even for our life - just imagine. You are wearing VR goggles and walking around - and suddenly you go on street - under the car...

    3. Do you own any virtual reality headset now? How do you use it?
Nope. It's just a "interesting thing". I've checked it on presentation and thats all for me now.

  13. 1. I think yes, but now it is a very invested technology like HoloLens, Google glass etc. I think that in the near future google will be affordable and the market will expand

    2. Depends on what context. As for the negative impact on looking at a close point - that's it. But they can also help us, for example, to show a movie as a human resuscitate

    3. I have glasses for ~ $ 100. I used them several times. It was cool, but for now they are on the shelf :)

I also think of augmented reality as of the technology of the future. I believe that it may have a vast impact over our everyday life.

  14. 1. Is virtual reality worth paying attention to?
I think that virtual reality is the topic which more and more often shows on many modern technology sites. A few years ago we could only dream about this, and now everybody can buy yourself this tool. We can see how this technology evolves from year to year, it is getting cheaper, and more common available.

    2. Do you think that VR Goggles may have a major impact on our health?
I think that it depends on how you will use this. I am only afraid that people connected to VR googles will forget about real life, like in “Surrogates” movie. But this only catastrophic vision of future mastered by robots and technology.

    3. Do you own any virtual reality headset now? How do you use it?
I have used a VR headset a few times and it was really cool experience.

  15. Virtual reality has already many serious business applications, and it is not only gaming, but also medicine, military training, space training, etc. It should not be neglected and considered just a toy.

Our health is already influenced by so many electronic devices that one more cannot make it much worse.

VR headset now in my opinion is not yet enough developed for everyday use. Items that “everyman” can afford are of simple use, just showing the potential of this tool. I will wait with purchase until has full functionality.

I think yes. It becomes more and more popular gadget. Besides game playing it could be used also by scientists in various research.

2.Do you think that VR Goggles may have a major impact on our health?
For sure! My colleague played in roller coaster game with using that king of glasses. He said that after 7 minutes play he felt terrible and he wanted to vomit.

3.Do you own any virtual reality headset now? How do you use it?
    No, I don’t have any. I prefer a real life :)

  17. I'm glad you wrote about VR! That's one of the things that may be controversial for some of the people, but I think it shouldn't be treated any different than a typical innovation. It's hard to tell whether it is worth paying attention to or not - it all depends on the person and their needs and just like you mentioned VR is at the stage where it is just a toy. Personally I think VR is quite entertaining - but I might say it as well about things like Kinect or FaceRig. I guess that time will show how it will develop in the future, but for sure there is a lot of possibilities for such tool.

As for the health issues - that's something that is probably still being tested and people definitely should proceed with caution as that's technically "a new ground" to discover. Objectively speaking, VR has a lot of space for mistakes. Eyestrain, motion sickness, nausea or simply walking into some obstacle (I mean, half of your face is covered with a heavy headset - how is that convenient?) are on top of the list.

Personally I don't have a headset, but my brother once brought a cheaper version for phone - I got to try a game with rollercoaster and some haunted room - while it wasn't something that I would mistake for real life, it was still pretty fun and fresh.

  18. I played with virtual reality just once. My friend lend me Samsung Gear. It was just a normal smartphone covered with plastic dummy googles, but it works really fantastic. The impression was beyond my expectations. I saw many different kind of things. From applications, to just films and interactive animations. However the most exciting part of this googles was games. Especially horror ones. They were so terrifying, that I couldn't endure watching. It was great experience, but I couldn't interact with other people.

I think virtual reality is a very powerful tool, which we have't fully discover it's use. We are already addicted to our smartphones, so it's a matter of time before we will have constant contact with virtual reality. You're asking is it good? From one side we improving ourselves technologically, but from the other we slowly killing human "face to face" communication.

Personally I prefer meeting with real people, than spending time on computer and messenger applications, but nowadays it's inevitable. Pity that our society is aiming for technological development, rather than improving social skills in a real world. Virtual reality is a huge step for us, but not necessarily a step for being more human.

I think yes, it is. With vr we can make new and better projects. It’s good to use it not only our imagination.

    2. Do you think that VR Goggles may have a major impact on our health?
I think it depends, we should use them but not forget about real life.

    3. Do you own any virtual reality headset now? How do you use it?
I don’t have but I think one day I’ll buy.

  20. 1. Is virtual reality worth paying attention to?

It is, but I think that mostly professionals will be interested in VR. I can't imagine that common people will use VR goggles on a daily basis. I doubt it would affect people's life like computers or smartphones did. At least, current devices are not likely to become popular enough. Maybe doctors, architects and other professionals would make use of VR. Also, game industry could be interested in VR.

    2. Do you think that VR Goggles may have a major impact on our health?

I don't think so. For sure if we took it to the extreme, it could cause problems. But it is the same with everything, I guess.

    3. Do you own any virtual reality headset now? How do you use it?

No, I don't. They are too expensive and I don't think they would be useful for me. However, I have visited a game salon where I have put those goggles on and played a game. It was fun, I admit, but 15 minutes was more than enough for me. Maybe I'm already too old for this...

I think that yes. The new technology market is rapidly expanding and virtual reality has become a phenomenon. This brings us a lot of new opportunities.

      2. Do you think that VR Goggles may have a major impact on our health?

I do not know details, but I think that yes. They may have more influence than traditional computers, because they are creating or try to create a real world. People may be confused between this when computer world ends and when real life starts.

      3. Do you own any virtual reality headset now? How do you use it?

No, I don’t have and for now I don’t need such glasses 

  22. I don't own a VR set, but I think virtual reality is definitelly worth attention. It's a technology which, in my opinion, may hugely alter, or even revolutionise our future lifes. Truth be told it also sounds like an interesing business prospekt. As to the health impact I'd focus mostly on the psychological aspect. Im affraid plenty of people may find it easy to run from their problems into the virtual reality, which will look more real than ever and will blur the lines between life and fiction.
