(0:48 he started presenting the device)
Recently I've watched a youtube video about new technologies and one device catch my attention. After quick reserch I found out more about new translating devices and get a feeling that soon we might witness huge change in interpersonal comunication. Of course videos I posted afore are more of a triler than a true oscar winnig movie becouse we are seeing very adjusted situations when intelocutors spoke very clearly and had great accent. Still their potential for further develompent is huge and as an argument I could quote situation with smartphones. Not long ago when first Iphone 3s appeared most of us had been using mobile phones (personally I even forgot how to call previous
generation). How many years expired when Iphone 5 arrived ? I think at that time most of society have been using smartphones. It's only my guess but chances for connecting this two devices are pretty high. For me possibility to change my headphones in a little real time translator sounds awsome. I don't have to worry about awerness of english language when speaking with locals in any location in the world at least not untile battery run down. Different story is how it change our realtions with others. When I was watching video I got hold of an impresion that conversers tend to be more focus on tool itself. Perhaps becouse it was something new but I'm afraid that the case was the device becoming an obstacle. When talking to another person you aren't only speeking but whole setting play a crucial role. I can't imagine situation when I lose chance to observe gesture or facial expressions becouse my attention consume a translator. Also people become more and more expedient and I wouldn't be surprised to see situations when even knowing interlocutor language we would depend on the devices rather ourselves. Not to mention that learning new languages help developing better memory and cognitive thinking.
Would you rather try buing new translator or langueage course ?
In your opinion this type of devices is a future of comunication for humankind ?
Do you see new generation of translators beneficial for building deep relationships with people from other countries ?
Would you rather try buing new translator or langueage course ?
ReplyDeleteI think it depends on situation. Usually people don't have so much time to learn many languages so a translator is a good thing for them. Especially that even if you would learn five languages, there still will be languages which you don't know yet. So I think I would buy a translator but nevertheless I would like to learn some language by myself too.
In your opinion this type of devices is a future of comunication for humankind?
It is possible. Or maybe humankind will talk in one language in a future? Untill this will happen, translators are needed for sure.
Do you see new generation of translators beneficial for building deep relationships with people from other countries?
It can build relations, but I am not convince about deepness of them. I think to create a deep relation there must be a great connectivity and understanding, and even good translator won't substitute for it.
I agree with you on the fact that deep relationships need more then just a common language. To be honest I don't believe people will ever speak in one language becouse we tend to do things in a way that is not exhausting for example when one of my friends brought a person from another country group still stayed with polish language and english conversation was hold on by individuals. Only my guess but in a future we propably will learn languages just for ourselves.
DeleteI think it depends. Sometimes you just don't have time to learn more languages and you really need to understand them so such a device could be interesting. Right now I don't see any usecase of it for me.
ReplyDeleteI don't think so. I believe people will unify and start to talk common language before translating devices will be popular, affordable and good enough to replace human.
I don't think so. Building deep relationship is more about emotions than language. Personally I prefer to talk with ununderstandable human than perfectly understandable robot.
Relationships are more complex than binary code and if you'd like to build a strong one you need time and effort so I agree that you need something more than a translation device. In my opinion we as humans will always stay with an easy way of doing things so I don't believe one language will become a standard for communication. Most of people don't want to learn, they want to know.
DeleteWould you rather try buing new translator or langueage course ?
I have tried the Google translate and duolingo app. Both very helpful with communication.
In your opinion this type of devices is a future of comunication for humankind ?
Every kind of device that helps you understand other person is great :)
Do you see new generation of translators beneficial for building deep relationships with people from other countries ?
Yes definitely, this can remove the barriers between the countries :)
I have similar opinion. Device that helps with everyday life is beneficial for society but humans tend to overuse things and I'm afraid that this tool would be no exception. Imagine situation when you can't accomplish your daily routine becouse you forgot your translating device and lose possibility to even ask for help.
DeleteNew translator is definietly more handy for us. I actually like to learn new languages so that decision will depend on various situations e.g. if a language might be useful for me in a long term. I enjoy learning languages which differs from our language a lot.
ReplyDeleteTranslation devices are definietly a future for humanity. Most likely learning new languages will be treated as a hobby only. We will not need to 'waste' our time to gain this knowledge anymore, but is it really better way? How will it impact our brains which develop a lot while learning such stuff. It will obviously help a lot to build a stronger relationships with other nations. Finally the language would be not an obstacle anymore. This can be a huge benefit for our common good.
I think the same way. Our reality requires using latest technologies in order to keep up with still accelerating market. Unfortunately a lot of devices this days make life easier but also impair our emotions. We become less and less emphatic and so is our ability to understand each other.
DeleteOf course, I would have bought the device. By nature, people are lazy, they build machines that will do the work for us. One man is able to learn several languages at a communicative level, but must spend a lot of time studying. Such a device saves time and opens language borders around the world. I think that this is a great solution and I think it has a lot of potential. In a few years, when the Internet will be available at every end of the world, communication will not constitute any restrictions. Imagine that you are going to Japan and are able to get along with every person on the street. I think that instead of learning words before leaving, people will be able to deepen their knowledge about the culture of the country to which they will go, so as not to commit a faux pas, using these amazing devices :)
ReplyDeleteI also have a feeling that in a future we will be using such translating devices commonly. Definitely they will make communication way easier but I don't think that problem with understanding each other can be fixed only by the translator. In order to learn how culture work you not only have to study subject but go deeper into the actual society and get to know the ins and outs :)
DeleteLearning languages has different purpose than buying device. If you know foreign language, you have knew ability and some knowledge about country, people, culture, so you widen horizons. Device brings you the immediate advantage, but nothing for longer time. However it’s impossible for most people to learn more than two or three languages in their life, so translators might be really helpful. I’m curious how it works for Asian languages. I don’t know if it’s the future, but I’m strongly convinced, that I will rather destroy deep relationships than help.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that learning new language is more beneficial then simply using device. Better quality of conversation (at least emotional) and improvment of cognitive thinking is one but once you learn how to use another language you become more independent. knowledge that not require any tools to occur is a huge adventage.
DeleteIn my opinion, this is a great solution. It will speed up and help in communication.
ReplyDeleteAnd just look back at history and see that the technological leap has been made possible through better communication.
Since the invention of the steam engine and thus shorten the distance between us (train), people have been able to communicate better.
Another thing of this type is the Internet (btw. which was also criticized just like people here criticize the above idea ).
The Internet has improved communication, and above all gave access to learning - FOR FREE.
What will the device bring to us? I think a lot of good.
Yup, definitely ability to speaking freely with anyone without worrying about comprehension is a great thing. Personally I would use such device in travel or when visiting other countries. My only concern is that we us humans (or maybe it's our society) have tendency to stop thinking when answers are before our eyes for exemple internet is one of the best things that happen when used in right way. As you sad you are able to learn for free but also you can start losing yourself on behalf of the social media.
DeleteI personally believe that devices of this type should be used as an additional form of learning. It is just a device and I doubt that it would be infallible and would explain equally well all the time. So I will choose to buy a traditional course and yet I will at least learn the basics of the new language.
ReplyDeleteIt cannot be ruled out that such devices may in the future help in contacts between people. People are becoming more and more comfortable, and translation devices will find many entysized people in the future. Additionally, it will be a kind of gadget and appropriate marketing will make many people want to have such equipment. But just to "show" that they keep up with trends.
This type of device can help translate our words, but I doubt it would help to build some kind of relationship with people from other countries. I may be wrong, but I think it looks much better when we talk to someone who speaks another language without the help of additional devices. In addition, I think that by communicating in a traditional way, we can build deeper relationships, and our interlocutor will remember us for a long time.
In my opinion speaking with someone while depending only on our own knowledge and abilities is more beneficial. Generally when you have to work harder for something you feel better after accompling the task but our reality demand is to do faster, better, cheaper. I think people are losing ability to value things that are harder to obtain becouse we become more and more expedient.
DeleteIf I needed a knowledge of a niche language, I would choose a translator. However, there are important and popular languages that are worth knowing or trying to learning.
ReplyDeleteIf only the translations will be fast and correct, and the translatiors themselves affordable, this types of devices will become more and more popular.
To build a true, deep interpersonal relations? Definitely not. But as a tool used in business or tourism, definitely yes, it is brilliant!
Definitely when used as helping hand the device is a great thing. For me if you value something you should prove your interest. Language is not an exception here. Use the device it's really awesome but don't depend on it too much.
DeleteWould you rather try buing new translator or langueage course ?
ReplyDeleteIt depends, translator is some kind of temporary solution, for example it could be used when we don't have enough time to learn new language and we need to communicate immediately in foreign country. Or even for older people or just a lazy solution to ability to speak to everybody. But the problem here is that we cannot translate emotions, also translated text wouldn't be exactly the same as our thoughts, so language course is more demanding option here but might be helpful to avoid mentioned situation.
In your opinion this type of devices is a future of comunication for humankind ?
Could be, as I think that we prefer online texting than call to someone, e.g. ordering takeway food or calling uber is perfect, because we don't have to speak. It's sad but we're choosing easier ways everyday
Do you see new generation of translators beneficial for building deep relationships with people from other countries ?
Don't think so, as I mentioned earlier that it's difficult to translate our emotions and exactly same thoughts but of course, it would be much easier as never before. But it would be helpful to communicate in public places.
Unfortunately the way things work as I observe them tend to value easy ways and I'm afraid that the translator wouldn't be an exception. Learning is a struggle and I'm sure a lot of people would completely forgot about it as long as translators would be well perceived by society.
DeleteThis kind of thing is a great gadget and I find out it really useful in certain occasions but still I don't think that we'll all start talk to AI translator. If we're looking at a human population as a whole I don't think that we're in the middle of any kind of a breakthrough because this technology will be unreachable for most of the people as a % of us. From my perspective it's a really cool tool for people from well developed countries that might not be familiar with English/German/French/Italian/Chinese but they do love travel. They might or might not use it just for vacation experience at first.
ReplyDeleteOne of the fine appliance of that technology that I find out interesting is for international conferences where it could be used instead of the lector.
You might have a point but as long as I can remember we don't really care about percentage when we want something especially when the thing we want can make our life easier. Just look at success of fast foods everyone knows they are bad for health even worse for planet and what do we do about it? They are everywhere, of course this technology is still in beta development but in my opinion it's a matter of years that they will merge with smartphones. First us an additional option than as a standard. Still my guess tho ;)
Delete1. I would rather buy a language course than a translator. No translator even most advanced can replace a live human conversation. Better invest into your knowledge, it will never give you up.
ReplyDelete2. They could be useful in some situations, but as I said, they can not replace a normal conversation.
3. Can they be beneficial for building up relationships with people from other countries?.. Well, just imagine two friends walking down a street and communicating with each other through one of those devices. I think the answer is obvious.
I agree the knowledge you acquire is irreplaceable and you can always count on it. In my opinion translators should be used as a helping hand ability to speak with anyone on earth is a good thing and from my expirience when you meet someone and the flow is right language can come as a second thing. Of course there must be some sort of communication and future translators might fullfil this gap.
DeleteOf course it's much easier to buy new device than learn foreign language by yourself. I would rather learn something new but not everyone has that much time and patience so I think it would help a lot, especially for the people which are travelling a lot to the countries where english is not known that good. I think that in future and after some improvements, device like this can implicate big breakthrough in communication between people from different countries but for now, in current form it might be very not intuitive. I think that they might help building relations, but such relationships shouldn't depend on those devices. What would happen if battery died? We would behave like we don't know each other or just try to communicate by gestures what wouldn't be enough I guess.
ReplyDeleteIf I would rather buy translation device or language course, depends on what purpose. If it would be a new country I would spend months or years, I would invest into language course. In case of short travel for few days or weeks I would but translator. I would try to communicate in english but if it would fail, I would use translator device.
ReplyDeleteFor me it is really interesting and I would like to use devices that would translate others languages on fly and if lector would talk like person which was talking to me it would be even better! If such technology would appear, maybe someday everybody would understand eachother talking own language.
It would be really strange for me to have machine between two people, but propably for people from houndred years ago it would be trange to talk through phone. So I believe it could be future of humankind, but It should be good in imitiating other person voice, and it should be fast on-line translation.
Same as other commentators I can agree that it depends on situation. If we need some information fast and we know next to nothing in other language, tools like mentioned in the video could help us. On the other hand, it’s like calculator, makes people lazy and it kills their creativity. I don’t think that devices like that are a future of communication. Words without emotions can’t do anything huge. It’s only translator. Helps but don't change and build anything important.
ReplyDeleteIts just another take on the topic that work to some extend, but would required more input from actual users. The problem is that people seems not to use this type of cheats to communicate. I believe it would be useful in some business situations, but I personalty wouldn't relay in my negotiation on some artificial translator event if I would trust it. Much more likely I would like to have a translator in person.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, in a private meetings I would feel weird using such a tool, much more likely I would prefer to take a language course. Also nowadays I think people are too much detached from physical form of conversation, so giving them yet another tool to make them even more alienated form each other may not be such a great idea ;)
1. I would buy a language course and learn a different language, but I still don't have time to do it. The translator is useful, for example, if we have some difficult words to translate. Yes, I would buy an translator.
ReplyDelete2. I don't think it's the future in communication. It is certainly something useful, however, more and more people learn languages to be able to communicate with other people.
3. I don't think it would deepen the relationship. We build deep relationships when we understand each other well, when we were on the same page. I don't know how a translator would deepen relationships.
I think such translator should be treated as an auxiliatory tool and does not replace hard work required to gain proficiency in the given language. I am also afraid that translator may not be smart enough to translator everything properly (it may not be able to understand the deeper context, some words/expressions have many variouas meanings as well). We have to take into consideration such problems like the privacy of the conversation (someone may be afraid of being recorded by his interlocutor) - on the other hand, hiring a professional interpreter may be risky too and does not ensure the full confidelity (a interpreter may be e.g. forced by the court to tell what was told during a conversation etc). As I already mentioned there is no silver lining when it comes to foreign language - becoming fluent in a given language requires much time and work, and travelling because without a contact with "living" language you do not achieve anything. Apart from this, I find all those ads about wonderful language courses/learning methods that let you learn a foreign language in no time at all really hilarious (you must have seen such adverts e.g. on onet).
ReplyDeleteWould you rather try buing new translator or langueage course ?
ReplyDelete- I think I would rather learn something new than buy special tool and believe that it won't make any mistake during translating. On the other hand, I think there are many people who don't enough time or patience to learn new language and in this case translator will be great solution for them.
In your opinion this type of devices is a future of comunication for humankind ?
- Yes and no. Maybe this type of devices is a future of communication, but I think that humankind in future will strive to have a one, common language for every nation.
Do you see new generation of translators beneficial for building deep relationships with people from other countries ?
- I think that using English as a international language helped building relationships between people from other countries and translators only improved communication for people who doesn't know foreign language. Translators are not a breakthrough, but only a improvement.
Would you rather try buing new translator or langueage course ?
ReplyDeleteI would rather participate in an laungage course because during those courses I am not only studying laungage - I am also learning about people, culture and how to use laungage properly. Straight translation is useful but not in every situation. Something that is common and normal for me can be strange and unpleasant for somebody from different culture. That's why laungage course is much better because I can also learn how to act properly.
In your opinion this type of devices is a future of comunication for humankind ? It is a future of online communication for sure. We can't escape that anymore.
Do you see new generation of translators beneficial for building deep relationships with people from other countries?
I think that deep relationships are based on understanding and accepting each other cultures - we don't need fast translation for that. We need translation made by person or software that can understand small cultural differences.
Would you rather try buying new translator or language course ?
ReplyDeleteIt depends on how difficult is the language. But it's a nice skill to know how to speak foreign languages. The language translator is nice when you go on a trip where people don't speak multiple languages, and you have to communicate in the native one. So in that case it can be very useful
In your opinion this type of devices is a future of comunication for humankind ?
Maybe, humans are lazy so I think it will become a main tool for communication with foreigners.
Do you see new generation of translators beneficial for building deep relationships with people from other countries ?
Yes, it can distance humans, but every device does it. In this world is one common rule - whatever suits you. If you are a person that likes to have deeper relationships, you won't use the device. Simple as that.
So I think everyone will choose their own way of communication
In my opinion, such a translator is similar to a prosthesis to a person with dysfunction will make life easier, but I would not want to be forced to use it. On the other hand, you have to be aware of your own limitations - I probably will not be a pilot, but I will not disregard the recording of the environment from a drone flight. I believe that such a translator will facilitate the building of deeper relationships with people from other countries, but only to a certain extent.
ReplyDeleteI’d rather spend my money on language course and for me it’s certain choice because it may help me in future job. I don’t think my job interview will have good result if I wear that gadget during foreign language test. I also would like to attend to language course not only to learn something new but to meet new people and spend some free time in productive way.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion this type of devices have bright future for humankind and it really shocked me but in a positive way. For now it may looks like somone is lack of language skills so it has to be more popularized to stop looking as something strange.
For sure it can help build relationship but not something serious in my opinion. There are other boundaries in front of devices such as culture and habits. Moreover I can’t see that device in daily usage.
If I have to choose how I would spend my money I will buy new translator.
ReplyDeleteI know English enough to communicate with other English speak people. Other languages are unknown for me. New translator that we saw in the video help us to communicate abroad and if we use it often we will learn some new words for sure. In my opinion this form - travel and talk with other people via translator develop our language skill faster and more practically than classic course with lector. Of course if we just need to communicate at restaurants, hotels or street. If we want to work abroad course will be better way to know new language.
