WHY DO WE READ?
We all know reading in general is
a good thing. It does not matter either we are obliged to read set books in
school or we just enjoy our coffee time with a novel. The thing to remember is
how powerful books are. Some people read before sleep, to relax and clear the
mind. Others seek information and look for specific knowledge. Of course it is
important what do we read, but studies show that it does not matter what we
read when it comes to train our brain. What is interesting, is a fact that 75%
of millionaires declare to read at least 2 books per month. It may suggest that
reading is a kind of a way to success. The most important is consistency.
There are plenty of benefits, reading helps us to:
- extend our word-inventory
- reduce stress level
- better our sleep routine
- improve brain connectivity
- lower blood pressure
- contribute to a longer life
It is very hard to decline
advantages of reading, yet we still do it rather rarely. In my opinion there
are some reasons we do so. There are plenty of things we can do with more ease.
I know opinions that reading is boring. ‘What is the point of reading a book
when I can watch an adaptation?’, Some may say. Others can say that books are wasting
our time. Some would say that books are expensive. Problem with reading books
nowadays is that there are plenty of ways to consume information faster. There
are just easier ways to get an information, or to know a story by reading a
shortcut or watching a video about it.
Scientists highlight the importance of reading at a young age. However it is never too late to start reading or just to read more, it is strongly important for children to read as much as possible. The other important thing is the difference between printed books and ebooks. There is no doubt which one is better. Printed books are easier on the eyes, they amplify the hoy of reading (if there is a joy at all 😊), the can help us sleep better and much more.
There is just one proper conclusion.
We all should read as much as we can. Train our brains, like we train our
bodies! Expand our horizons and get experience, knowledge.
One thing is sure, there are not many
thins that can give us as much as books can do.
Do You read books consistently?
What are Your favourite genres?
What do you prefer, books or movies/adapations?
I don't consider myself a great reader of books, although from time to time I like to delve into a good reading and get to know a new world and interesting characters. As a rule, I don't have enough free time to start an adventure with a new book or series at all, but if I do, I always try to finish the whole cycle in a reasonable time not to lose any plot and be up to date with the story. To be honest, I only consistently read books in primary school and maybe in middle school, that's all.
ReplyDeleteFantasy is my absolute favorite genre. I love everything that to some extent departs from our everyday life. I love the concept of different races, cultures, presented worlds, magic, and much more ... As an example, the elven race and everything related to it. I also put Sci Fi in the same place as the Fantasy genre, for the same reason as the former, mainly because it represents an alternate reality. I recently read "The Lotus War" by Jay Kristoff, which is a Japanese Steampunk series. This combination was quite a unique and interesting experience.
They say that at the moment we're living in the age of film, not of the written word, but I don't entirely agree with that. I admit that I really enjoy watching series or movies, but sometimes it's good to just pick up a book and use your imagination. In the film, we can see what is what, but when we have to figure out what the book world should look like, then the real pleasure begins. Books just simply feel better.
I enjoy watching movies/series as well, but for me there are not many things to calm me down and relax as good as a nice novel. Actually, I am trying to change my habits into reading at least for an hour daily before sleep, wish me luck!
Delete1. While reading this article, I realized that I have been neglecting reading books! The article inspired me to read a book before bed because unfortunately I have huge problems with sleeping.
ReplyDelete2. From my point of view the most interesting genres of books are fantasy novels and detective novels, e.g. Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie's detective stories. I love to read them in the original language, but unfortunately in our country they are available only as ebooks in english, it is completely different with the availability of Polish language version, but it is not the same :)
3. Of course I prefer to read the book, while after reading the book I always like to watch the movie so that I can compare both, the movie and the book and can have a discussion about it with my friends.
I am truly happy to see You enjoyed my article :). As I read mostly fantasy books, I do not read detective novels at all. As a matter of fact, I like to read a crime story sometimes.
Delete1. I wouldn't say that I read books consistently. I am in the habit of taking longer breaks and then reading one or more series in a row. These breaks can be shorter or longer so it's hard to name it consistent :) Just yesterday, I received two more volumes of the series that I have been following for a very long time. So I will probably read them soon and take a break again before moving on to the next titles.
ReplyDelete2. My favorite genres are science fiction, fantasy and post-apo. I am currently reading a series written by Dan Abnett which takes place in the Warhammer 40K universe and tells the fate of soldiers from the regiment called Tanith First-and-Only. This universe can to some extent be subsumed under all the book genres mentioned by me.
3. In this case, I do not have a favorite, it all depends on what mood I am in and how involved I am in a given universe. Currently, it is often said that movies dominate and win with books, unfortunately in part it is true, but I think it is related to how long you consume a given medium. Usually, the films last up to 2 hours where the book takes much more time, which affects the convenience and how you can reconcile with it the daily duties.
In the past I had the same manner in case of reading. I took a book or a series and read them all. These days due to lack of time and plenty of things to do (I have a 4 month baby) I read a book in at least 10-15 steps.
Delete1. For most of my life I used to be a "binge reader" - I could go without touching a single book for even years and then spend whole days with just reading. Recentyly I decided to turn reading books into a (almost daily) habit and I have to admit it works better for me.
ReplyDelete2. It really depends on my mood and current needs. Generally speaking, I read mostly fantasy and some self-improvement books. In terms of fantasy, recently I've finished two tomes of "The Poppy War" by R. F. Kuang.
3. It really depends on the situation, but in most cases I'd say books - as author mentioned, it widens our vocabulary and reduces stress level (I belive as long as we can finish the series, because I'm going insane if I'm forced to wait to know the ending).
As I read the comments, I see that majority of people here enjoy fantasy boosk. As a matter of fact, I am a fantasy reader as well, althougt from time to time I like to dive into a history book.
DeleteI do try to read books consistently and consider this activity essential to proper development of adult mental health and knowledge. Honestly I do not have a “favorite genre”. There was a time I would read anything and everything that came my way and would be possible for me to understand. Nowadays I am a little more picky in my reading preferences. In my opinion there are many reasons for us to grab a book, from educational purposes to pure leisure. I do watch a lot of films and adaptations, however I do not consider them as any competition to the written originals. It is a completely different art and type of story telling and it should not be compared or does not need to be for that matter. A piece of art should only be able to defend itself without having to be compared to anything else.
ReplyDeleteI must admit I have similar feeling about making any comparisons. I do enjoy books as well as a decent movie, either it is an adaptation or not.
DeleteDo You read books consistently?
ReplyDeleteEarlier I read 1-2 books a month, now I simply don't have time because of school and work.
What are Your favourite genres?
I like books that are from fantasy and sci-fi genre, but I read also a few books from other genre but I didn't enjoy it as much as my favorite ones.
What do you prefer, books or movies/adapations?
I like both. If I read book first I'm watching film to see if it will look like in mu imagination. And if I saw a movie first i'm trying to find details that was missed in adaptation.
I try to read a few books per month, but I face the same dilemma - lack of time to calm down and take the book in a quiet. About watching adaptations, I got used to the fact that it misses a lot of details, therefore I do not even try to find them precisely.
DeleteYes, I read books every single day. When I was younger reading was not my cup of tea, however once you read those few books which exert an enormous influence on your life that is when you cannot stop and fall into reading for long. I enjoy reading some fantasy, thrillers, and criminal stories, but I also consider biographies very interesting. However, my favorite genre I think is science. With scientific books I obtain most useful and solid knowledge. I like to watch a good piece of cinema from time to time, however books above anything else!
ReplyDeleteI used to read books on daily basis, currently i have much less time to do that but still i try to read at least 2 books per month. Reading relax me a lot, i enjoyed doing that during my off time. I love vacation time, whenever i go somewhere i have finally lots of time to catch up my reading. I do prefer books over movies, however there are some great adaptations like Hobbit/ Harry Potter that i love both, books and movies. During filming Game of Thromes series were great, till they had been filming based on book, once book had finished, series for me were not the same anymore.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't call myself as a bookworm, however I try to read at least a few books a year. I especially like reading on summer evenings. I don't have a favorite genre of books. I read everything from romance novels to science fiction. I don't like reading horror books. I honestly cannot answer the question whether I prefer books to movies. I like both. Books allow me a moment for myself, while films are a nice way to spend an evening with my fiancé :)
