Week 5 [17-23.05.2021] Benefits of keeping a houseplant

From health benefits to enhancing the overall appearance of space – reasons to have an indoor plants in house are plenty. Not only do plants create ‘like home’ feeling, but also they are able to boost your mood, reduce stress level and support the healing process.

Why do we need them?

First of all, they just look good. Plants can rapidly increase the property value. They can breathe life into any room by giving the sense of final decor touch. Some of the varieties have the ability to release delicate scent, which can’t be compered to any artificial air refreshers. Adding some green plants is a simple hack, commonly used in home rental or sales process to make potential buyers more at home.

Reducing stress and anxiety level. Spending time in nature has been proven to relive stress, relax and rejuvenate both body and mind. Plants also have the ability to purify the air, which has overall positive effects on health. To ease anxiety and fight insomnia, try lavender. It’s commonly seen in essential oils and candles scents, but keeping it as a plant could also work. If you are an enthusiast of herbal infusions you can also try lemon balm to calm nerves.

More benefits of houseplants:

  • Boost creativity and productivity.
  • Better mood during winter.
  • Increased quality of sleep.
  • Taking care of houseplant can be therapeutic.

When it comes to taking care of plant, it almost seems that some of us are just born with green thumb. Others believe that they can kill a cactus. The hesitation behind becoming a plant parent and buying first plant is totally understandable. But fear not! Recommendations for aspiring plant parents with short descriptions below:

Monstera

Or so called ‘trendy plant, which can be seen almost everywhere.’
This tropical, evergeen beauty is famous for it’s characteristic leaf-holes.

Monstera thrives in indirect, bright to medium light, needs watering every 1-2 weeks and prefers humid conditions.

Snake plant

Also known as ‘Mother-in-Law’s Tongue’ or Sanseveria is one of the easiest to take care of plants. Very forgiving but dosen’t like too much water or soggy soil (which can lead to root rot).

Prefers bright, indirect light. Just remember to protect this plant from drafty windows during winter.

Peace Lily

Another easy to go houseplant. This lovely, popular plant choice, not only brights up the space,
but also clears air. Enjoys medium to low light and tolerates underwatering over overwatering. To chceck if your peace lily needs watering, just touch the soil once a week and check it its dry or still damp.

  1. I have two plants in my apartment that I personally bought some time ago, both are Peace Lillies and to be honest I just like the look of them - white, long, fancy flowers and characteristic metallic leaves. I've also heard of their air filtering trait, but I suspect two aren't enough for me. I like to take care of my plants, but I don't pay more attention to them than they need, mainly apart from watering of course, I like to wipe the leaves with a wet cloth from time to time and additionally spray them with a water mist, I once read somewhere that they like it a lot.
I like spending time in nature, but I don't necessarily tolerate heat, I like rain or storm the most - the smell of moist soil is one of my favorite feelings. I love to admire unusual views, if the landscape is breathtaking I just enjoy the moment and the fact that I am there.
Certain people may display such behavior, I suspect it may be directly related to the pandemic. Due to the fact that we're less likely to leave the house and meet with others, such relationships between the owner and animals or plants may arise. It also seems to me that humans can simply treat them as a substitute for their offspring, after all they also need to be looked after and cared for.

  2. Frankly speaking, I’m not a plant parent and I even can’t take care of them for too long. I assume that I have some plants at home but it’s my wife's area and she takes care of them. I’ve heard about the benefits of having plants at home but it’s hard for me to believe as I can’t see those effects. On the other hand, I enjoy spending time in nature when there is nice weather because I do feel that breathing is easier in parks for example. I also love spending time by the sea where there is a lot of iodine in the air. People nowadays are starting to treat everything as their pets or children so…

  3. To be honest i had few plants few years back but unfortunately I couldn't keep any of them alive so I gave up, but actually I bought a plant yeasterday to see if I can keep it in good shape now, so the time will show if i am going to become a plant parent. (the plant is a lilly i hope it does not need any high maientance).

I love spending time in nature outside, my favourite place is near Wisła but not in Warsaw. I love sitting there and just relax. Also I have a dog and I love walking with him especially, in forest which is kinda hard because he is a husky so his instincts go crazy there and he is dragging me on his leash. So let's talk about who is taking who on a walk. :D

I agree to that, not as much I can say about the plant thing but i noticed that a lot of people is into plants. As if it comes to pets i can 100% agree, I adopted my dog when I moved to my own place to not feel lonely and have someone with me there, at first it was hard because my mom was afraid of him, but as the time flew she treats him sometimes better than me, and if I come to visit she gives him every treat she can. So he is treated like a family member and I can't imagine losing him or not having a dog now. Sometimes it even feels like it is bigger responsibility than having a kid.

  4. My fiancée always want to have a lots of plant in our house but she never takes care of them, that’s why I’m forced to be "plant parent". To be honest my knowledge about plant is really small so i really appreciate tips you put in your article. The only plant i wanted to have is Bonsais tree which im really taking care off, have read few books/ articles how to take care of it. I love spending time on nature, having lots of walks with my dog, biking in Kabacki forest. That’s my best way to relax. Having a pet is huge responsibility, so im happy that people treat pets more seriously . Anyway I don’t follow this trend of acting like “pet parent”. I do have a lot of friend which get offended when someone don’t want them to come with dog to their place. For me its obvious, its your dog, treat it best you can but don’t expect other to fell in love with him same as you do.

  5. I'm not a plant guy, all plants that I received died in few weeks because I don't have either time or desire to take care about them. I know that recent studies are unanimous that having plants in your near environment has positive effect on your well-being (especially now where all things - work, school etc. are taking place in our homes) but I'm not convinced. But in other hand I enjoy taking a walks in forests, parks and other green places. In my opinion "parenting" anything but children it's a sign you are having some kind of problem and you probably should contact nearest doctor or pharmacist;) I'm a dog person and I just treat my dog like a equal family member(or just like a member of pack), but some people are going mad with that "parenting a pet" - dressing them in pajamas or putting them into stroller.

  6. Are you a plant parent? Do you have any plant at home or want to have? If so, do you enjoy taking care of your plants?
We moved a while ago and since then I’m totally a plant parent. At the beginning, I started with easy-to-grow plants – Sanseveria is one of my favorites. I have six of them at home, each of them is at least 1.2 meters long :) In addition, I really like spider plants. They have a good effect on the air in the apartment. What's more, the plants we choose must be safe for cats, so the choice is smaller.
Do you enjoy spending time in nature?
I love spending time in nature. I try to go for walks in the Kabacki forest at least twice a week (if time allows – more than twice). In addition, I have just came back from a week's vacation in the Bieszczady Mountains - there I had time to catch up with nature.
Do you agree that nowadays people started to 'treat their plants as pets and pets as children'?
I agree with this statement, but I don't think it's a bad thing :) I think that we should always take care of everything and everyone as best we can, so why not treat animals or plants in the same way?

  7. I don't, to be honest. I have a young pomeranian and every plant I do like for example Monstera is dangerous for dogs because it's toxic. I've heard a lot of stories about dogs that have a lot of problems caused by toxic home plants.

Yes of course! I love being in the woods, running in the mountains, or taking a classic barbecue in the garden. Nature can calm us down and let us relax. It's something that everyone should take care of.

Hmm, I don't think so based on my friends and my own experience. By the way in my opinion every pet deserves proper care and young dogs need a lot of attetion.

  8. I am not a plant keeper. I must say I do not have even one plant in my home, sadly :(. I have a dog so I must be careful while thinking about plants. You mentioned that plants indoor make 'feel like home' effect. I agree with that, but for me the same effect can be done by using raw wood, by the way I am a big fan of wood in my space. Coming back to plants, I would like to take care of my garden and maybe try to get some nice plants in there.
Of course I enjoy spending time in nature, it is far more relaxing that any other indoor activity.
I agree with a fact that more and more people treat their pets as family, I do it myself and I think there is nothing wrong about it. I do not know if it works the same way with plants, but I assume it does.

  9. Yes, I am a plant parent, however I only own two little plants at home. For now, it seems enough for me, but in the future, I wish to have more plants. I enjoy taking care of them, because they do not have big demands and still, they grow and look good.
Yes, I really enjoy spending time in nature. Only when I have some free time, I go back to my hometown, because my home is located near the forest, far from the streets and crowds. I can chill and relax there like anywhere else.
Yes, I partly agree with this statement. Nowadays people are even trying to make friends with technological devices. I don’t think such behaviors are healthy.

  10. I do own each of the plants presented in the article, so I guess I consider myself a “plant parent “, however I find the idea of calling a plant owner or a pet owner a “parent” is a stretch. I feel that house plants do improve my quality of life immensely. Especially during winter time. My apartment is very small and thanks to plants it seems a little less cramped. I enjoy spending time in nature as any other person. I own a small cottage house in the country and I spend time there as often as I can. It is very relaxing and therapeutic for me, and considering the speed of living nowadays it would probably be a good way to slow down for anybody having a stressful time.

  11. 1. I love flowers and plants! In every form! Whether they are species for the balcony, potted at home, or cut. Flowers are great! I have quite a few plants at home and try to buy new ones all the time. I am a big fan of greenery. I really enjoy spending time with plants, watering them and sometimes talking to them. Yeah I know it’s weird.

    2. Spending time in nature is one of my favorite activities, for example today I was in the forest and I picked my favorite lily of the valley and elder :) I love how the house smells like spring.

    3. I definitely agree with you. I am an example of such a person myself, unfortunately, I don't have children yet, but I have recently become the owner of a cat, which is definitely favored by us. In addition, my tomatoes, or rather their seedlings can count on a daily dose of conversation - almost like “my children” :)

  13. I would like to buy a plant for my home, since now at my house, I'm the only plant :/
I really love nature, especially animals, all animals, (but a little more dogs :p)
As a child, I spent a lot of time in the forest, and I always feel better there, both physically and spiritually, people say that a special aura reigns in the forest, especially trees and especially oaks.
Yes, and I was pleasantly surprised that the procedure for taking an animal from a shelter is quite serious, probably in some countries of the third world it is easier to adopt a child, unfortunately
