The discussion whether to legalize marijuana has been going on for many years
both in Poland and around the world. Due to the increasing number of reports that
marijuana can be an effective measure during therapy of people suffering from
multiple sclerosis, epilepsy or Crohn's disease, many countries have decided
to make concessions. It is worth asking, however, whether medical
marijuana is indeed the only means that can help people suffering from certain diseases?
Perhaps its legalization is justified from a social point of view, but maybe

Perhaps its legalization is justified from a social point of view, but maybe
granting free access to soft drugs is, in fact, a shortcut. Is the legalization of marijuana
an example of fighting drugs with other drugs?

What are the main arguments for and against the legalization of marijuana?
In my opinion, the main arguments in favour are:
1. Marijuana is successfully used to help people who have serious health problems.
Cancer patients are given Cannabis in the treatment of neoplasms to relieve the
symptoms of the disease.

2. Marijuana is full of nutritional value
Cannabis seeds are very nutritious and rich in omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, and iron.
Cannabis is used in many foodstuffs, for example in salad dressings, candy bars
and crisps.

3. Personal care. Cannabis can be used as personal care products, it is also
used for the production of certain cosmetics such as body lotions, shampoos,
moisturizing conditioners, and soaps.

4. The plant is easy to grow and environmentally friendly.
Marijuana, unlike many other plants, does not require the use of chemicals.
Cannabis has very little needs in this area.
Hemp is resistant to pests, which means that there are no harmful insecticides in the soil.

Arguments against the legalization of marijuana:
1. Short-term memory problems may occur in people taking marijuana.
Numerous studies have shown that cannabinoids impair all stages of memorizing.

2. Research conducted in 2003 found that 53% of marijuana users experience
a loss of motivation. Long-term use of marijuana causes a lower level
of dopamine - a chemical substance present in the brain directly affecting motivation.

3. Marijuana is often used as a drug to combat depression.
Unfortunately, in some cases, it may work in the opposite way, especially in young people.
The British Medical Journal published a study showing that frequent use of
cannabis by teenage girls is associated with a feeling of depression in later years.
It should be remembered that there are various types of depression and marijuana
may have different effects on the disease, not necessarily positive.

4. Like with cigarettes, smoking marijuana can have a detrimental effect
on the respiratory system. Studies show that marijuana smokers can suffer from respiratory
ailments such as bronchitis, coughing and wheezing.
Since 1 November 2017, marijuana can be legally sold in Polish pharmacies.
However, in order for the raw material to reach pharmacies, it must be registered by the
Office for Registration of Medicinal Products. This office has 270 days to register
the raw material, so – of course – medical marijuana will not be registered in the near future.
The law states that Poland will import medical marijuana from abroad.
This decision is based on the fact that the marijuana grown in Poland could reach
the black market. This position raises a lot of controversy because our country
allows people to apply for a licence for the cultivation of opium poppy which
is used to make heroin. The import of marijuana causes its high price, which is why the
prices of drugs made using marijuana will be quite high in Polish pharmacies.
And since the prices will be higher than on the black market people
will find a cheaper alternative.

3. Is smoking marijuana the prelude to the use of hard drugs?
4. Is the decision to ban the cultivation of medicinal marijuana in Poland and import it from
abroad the right one?
abroad the right one?
Personally, I’m not marijuana fan, but in cases of medical purposes I think that is very important thing. If something can reduce pain or even help to get recover from disease, why it’s banned form usage? On the other hand, when someone who is absolutely in shape, get a prescription for a weed, then we can call it “abuse”. Full legalisation is the only way to control market of this drug. Although it can affect on quality of marihuana in Poland. Now if you want to buy it, you have big chances to get something that wasn’t even lays next to weed. If it’s legal, you can at least know what you buying and it can stop people from buying “dopalacze” because the can buy weed I local shop, just like vodka or cigarettes which is more harmful to health.
ReplyDeleteAn example of a person struggling to legalize medicinal marijuana is Tomasz Kalita. The former spokesman of SLD who fought with brain cancer. He died at the age of 37. He emphasized that in order to get hemp oil, he had to run around Warsaw and search for dealers. Unfortunately, he had died before marijuana was legalized in Poland.
DeleteI've visited Amsterdam 2 months ago, for the firs time. I heard a lot about that great city, inspiring, free, open. In all of it meanings. I have to say, that "the weed" aspect wasn't my goal, but a nice addition. I was rather expecting really great design, lovely architecture and I wanted to feel that "bike craze".
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that I am very disappointed by this city... Mostly because of that marijuana legalization. So many people travel there because they think that this city promises you so much! You can do what you want, be who you want... And that's what you can feel on the streets, in a bad way. I was overwhelmed by the amount of stunned groups that were roaming the city, behaving as if they were in their own home. A crowd of people who were sweeping through this city even in not interesting for tourists moment (November), discourages spending time in culturally important places I wanted to visit. Furthermore, even if you don't want to smoke, you can strongly smell marijuana everywhere.
And that made me thinking - where are the real citizens? I found later few articles where they were complaining about the situation, that their city is devastated, changing only to encourage more tourists.
I think I would prefer that marijuana be allowed for medical use, but not for general use. A perfect balance for everyone.
Polish YouTuber Krzysztof Gonciasz was on a trip to New York. He talked that the same problem is there, too. Going around the streets you can clearly smell the odour of marijuana. The city authorities withdrew from arrests for the guilt of being in the possession of marijuana, substituting them only with fines. I think I wouldn’t like to live in a city where you could smell the odour of marijuana every day.
DeleteI definitely think that not only marijuana but other drugs also should be legalized in Poland.
ReplyDeleteAnd in every country. I don't think medical or other marijuana can be threat
to young or old people. Marijuana can be prelude to hard drugs like alcohol to marijuana
and cigarettes. It depends of a person. If someone wants it it's not a problem to buy
it on black market. And when you are a kid you can unwittingly buy some shit because it's
illegal. Goverments are scared of drugs because usually it makes people think other way.
I personally hate rules and control. Also I am not big pot smoker.
Everythink is for people if you know the limit.
Yo check this article:

I agree with the argument that if someone wants to get drugs then there is no problem with it. However, I think that in order to legalize marijuana we have to increase the level of awareness of parents in bringing up their children. Adults don’t have knowledge about the bad influence of drugs on the life of a young ma
DeleteI think polish society is not mature enough for it. I can see with the eyes of imagination a group of teenagers that is smoking weed between lessons or just before school. Curiosity of people -specially young ones will be the main problem.
ReplyDeleteThe medical aspect of marihuana is good. Whatever is used to cure diseases is good, but must be under special control.
Cigarettes and alcohol is more harmful for health and we can buy it in every shop so why not marihuana? The reason is simple. There are a big money in it. Government earn a lot of money from taxes. Second - alcoholes and cigarettes are much longer on a market and everyone got used to it. Third - people are associate marihuana as a drug next to hard ones like cocaine or meth.
Im a big fan of conspiracy theories and I have something in my mind. I think the chance for legalization of marihuana is more difficult because one thing - competition on a market. In my opinion big tobacco concerns like Phillip Morris etc. see the threat in legal marihuana as a rival. It's because people could buy "weed" instead of cigarettes. It could be a big lose for them.
Personally I'm not into any drugs. We are living in a country with rules. If we allow people to do and buy what they want that is called anarchy.
In Polish society there are many problems, such as unemployment, the lack of education or alcoholism. I think that this is indicative of poorly developed middle class. The legalization of marijuana could lead to further degradation of Polish society.
Delete1) As Sławomir Wolski wrote above - i also don't think our society is mature enough to have unlimited access to marijuana or any other drug. We've had access to alcohol for a long time and i still would say we (as a society) don't know how to use it.
ReplyDelete2) medicinal marijuana - yes please. Controlled and strictly medical use should already be legal. Why it is not i have no idea. As i mentioned above - controlled access would not have any impact on young people.
3) I've some friends who "out of curiosity" took some hard drugs after years of smoking pot but without any scientific research i would not presume that marijuana leads to other drug addiction
4) No it is not good to import medicinal marijuana if it can be grown locally. It is a market as any other and there could be taxation, export and therefore profits.
3)
1. Do you think that the legalization of marijuana in Poland is a good decision?
ReplyDeleteWhat are the possible consequences?
I'm sure that the good side of this thing is that our government starts to earn money on it. I'm not sure that this drug produce more bad things than positive thing.
2. Can the legalization of medicinal marijuana in Poland be a threat to young people?
NO ! All over the world it helps people in many types of illnesses. We can't prohibit natural medicines. it's not right.
3. Is smoking marijuana the prelude to the use of hard drugs?
I don't have any statistics but honestly i don't think so. If we use it with some sensibility it should be okey
4. Is the decision to ban the cultivation of medicinal marijuana in Poland and import it from abroad the right one?
For me no. Own cultivation give us independence and also generate new place for workers.
I agree with Jacek. Our country is not ready for this evolution, yet. Privately, I think that marijuana should be treated like alcohol and cigarettes (in example vodka is more dangerous). Very high taxes, access regulation (identical as alkohol regulations, in example: not allowed for young people) and not allow drive any car under influence by marijuana. Ideal situation for me, but not possible in current goverment. Today, each people can buy marijuana in black market without any taxes and unknow origin.
ReplyDeleteMedical marijuana should be allowed in hospitals and legal for cultivations (with regulation and controls of course).
I think that marijuana (from good cultivation) is not gateway for harder drugs. Everyone had brain and can make decisions.
1. Well, our southern neighbors had some problems with it? Maybe, but is someone would like to intoxicate self it may do it in many different ways now.
ReplyDelete2. If we have irresponsible doctors - maybe.
3. It seems to me that we should use it as responsible as possible. Alcohol and cigarettes can also be an introduction to drugs. is not it?
4. In my opinion no, because it isn't cheap. We could produce medicinal marijuana myself. Unfortunately we know what our government is :)
There are no good answers for your questions. I’d like to believe in people right choices, but what does it mean? You have chosen a hard subject and it’s very dubious. In my opinion, there is the same number of cons and pros. I’m not a wizard, so I can’t talk about consequences. For sure, we will be hear about positive and negative facts, after legalization. If marijuana really cure people, I think it should be legal for them. Smoking marijuana isn’t the prelude to the use of hard drugs, because smoking cigarettes it’s not the prelude to use marijuana. When someone want to take hard drugs, feel free until it’s not dangerous for others.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I'd rather have marijuana legalized in Poland than alcohol or cigarettes. At least it won't cause that much violence that alcohol causes and I can't see any difference compared to tobacco, which is highly addictive too. Consequences may be varying, depends on - I think - mostly social aspects.
ReplyDeleteOne might say it will be a threat to young people. I would say, provided it's allowed after reaching 18 yrs old, it would not have any greater effect than cigarettes or alcohol. And since it's a soft drug, I would rather have people buy it from specially restricted places under the law, than forcing people to roam around searching for drug dealers. Especially because drug dealer cannot guarantee you any quality of a product and additionally can offer you some hard drugs as an incentive for his flourishing business.
As for cultivation, I'm truly astounded - I didn't know that it's not produced in Poland and we're importing it for medical purposes. That's clearly government washing hands of the problem instead of making us self sufficient. Ridiculous.
I think the legalization of medical marijuana was a good step. However, from what I have heard it is nowhere to be found and will not be available soon, mainly for the reason you mentioned - Plants can not be raised in Poland. The results are hard to assess, for the ill people will certainly be positive;).
ReplyDeleteFor young people the biggest threat is the lack of legalization, for a bit of substance you can become a criminal and thus have problems for your whole life, much more than addiction to it.
Marijuana can be a prelude to more powerful drugs, but it is a very individual matter if someone is susceptible to addiction.
1. Do you think that the legalization of marijuana in Poland is a good decision?
ReplyDeleteWhat are the possible consequences?
I think it's a good decision. The legalization is only for medical purposes. The people who must be treated with marijuana will have easier access to get it. Many countires have already legelized marijuana for medical purposes, so we can learn from them.
2. Can the legalization of medicinal marijuana in Poland be a threat to young people?
I'd say it won't be a threath. What's more I'd say that it still easier to gte marijuana on black market rather than from pharmacy when you need prescription from a doctor and even medical marijuana is still not legal to smoke anywhere, but in your own home.
3. Is smoking marijuana the prelude to the use of hard drugs?
I don't now really. Personally, I'd say it's not. Let me rephrase your question. "Is smoking cigarettes the prelude to the use of marijuana?" With such a question the answer is clearly 'no', at least from my point of view.
4. Is the decision to ban the cultivation of medicinal marijuana in Poland and import it from abroad the right one?
It's the worst decision that could have been made. They legelize the marijuana and take all the risk associated with it, but the refuse to collect benefits from it. The cultivation of marijuana in Poland would be a huge amount of additional money for Poland and it would lead to plenty of new work places.
1. Do you think that the legalization of marijuana in Poland is a good decision? It may be good decision, because we could make a bit money from giving to it tax fee and reduce country debt
ReplyDeleteWhat are the possible consequences?
Consequence may be good and bad. Good ones that it will reduce pain for people with cancer, reduce country debt (as I mentioned before), people wouldn't be so against it. Although there are some bad consequences like youth would want to make hard drugs (like cocaine, LSD, methedron) to make legal, some of them would want to try it.
2. Can the legalization of medicinal marijuana in Poland be a threat to young people?
3. Is smoking marijuana the prelude to the use of hard drugs? It depends on human and his rafusing ability. One will want to try another wouldn't. This is power ofhuman mind. It decides what you want to do.
4. Is the decision to ban the cultivation of medicinal marijuana in Poland and import it from
abroad the right one?
I don't think so. When we open factories producing legal marijuana we would make our economy better and it would give another work places.
Not so long ago I heard a radio interview with a former government expert working against the 'dopalacze' issue. He claimed that pot legalisation is actually a very good idea - and a relevant support in the fight he lead. As probably all of us know, marijuana is already widely available on the black market - in my opinion, legalising it would only do good, really. The quality of the product would highly improve and we would finally know what we buy. Nowadays, drugs are often mixed with other substances to increase their weight - you never know how it's gonna affect you this time and if it's gonna be stronger or lighter than before - and that's really annoying. Imagine entering the shop and choosing between different types of cannabis - I've never been to Amsterdam, but I visited Kristiania in Copenhagen and it really was something. The prohibition era in the US was a valuable lesson - I wish all governments in all countries accepted the fact that forbidding things is a poor and a short-term solution for those lacking imagination. As it was said above, introducing marijuana to polish market would do much good to our economy and health altogether.
