Week 7 [22.01-28.01.2018] Will automation help us have more free time?

In last years software robots (bots) have become more and more popular. On Internet and tech conferences speakers often talk about automatization of processes in many areas of our life.I would like to show a few types and ideas of them.

The first and the most popular platform are vending machines. People like buying cold drinks, coffee and snacks. The first modern vending machines were developed in England in the early 1880s. It allowed to buy postcards.

Hardware machines and softwares allow to save our time. For example: people like ATMs, ticket machines, self-service cashes in supermarkets or photobooths because due to them long queues in stores and banks are smaller.

At Warsaw University of Technology students developed a kebab machine, which contained a very simple hardware and allowed to heat only ready-made products. Online we can find many self-made examples of such machines. People use often Lego. This is very easy and funny idea for creating your own machine.

  • Do you prefer using automatic machines?
  • Do you have any idea how to about create a new type of automation machine?

Robotic Process Automation

I think this slogan was a buzzword last year.

Google Trends - Robotics automation process

Well known consulting companies propose their clients to automate workflow. Each day many employees do repeatable and time-consuming tasks (eg. sticking postage stamps, signing documents, prepare charts, tax calculating etc).

RPA is a technique for developing software which will replace people to perform boring and expensive tasks. Implementation of RPA brings many benefits like reducing costs and employees time, making business more flexible (bots can work all time with unprecedented speeds and without breaks) and assuring better accuracy and quality.

I think, it’s great that employees can focus on more creative work and let the machines do all the boring and repeatable tasks.

The largest RPA software includes artificial intelligence modules. This software is able to learn and improve the tasks they work on. All is based on historical data and neural network (special type of algorithms).

  • What do you think about RPA ?
  • Is this a threat or a chance for development?
  • Which industries will be the best in RPA implementation?

Automation tasks in private life.

  • Do you use this type of solutions to manage your daily tasks?
  • What daily tasks would you like to automatize?

For more difficult IT tasks I have created scripts (small computer programs). They help me for daily tasks like opening other programs, preparing summary of information from some portals and blogs etc.

I have read the book about automatization. It is great for beginner programmers.

Do you know this cartoon? Can you believe this series was made between 1962–1963? Probably we need to wait a few years for this type of automation of the daily processes. ;)

  1. Do you prefer using automatic machines?
    – Yes, I do. I can say that in particular business areas I can't imagine not using automatic machines. ATMs for example, could you remember the last time you went to a bank to withdrawn money? I always use ATMs.

Do you have any idea how to about create a new type of automation machine?
    – Not really, but I have read about quite interseting machines like underground bike parking which is fully automated.

What do you think about RPA ?
    – I think it's great. I would to have it implemented in my daily work. One thing could be opening all the apps I need to do my work, which don't take much time, but still would be easier to do it with one click rather than openining everything separately.

Is this a threat or a chance for development?
    – I think is a chance for development. Developing RPA creates new work places. Moreover, having automated boring stuff you can foucs on more complex problems rather than wasting time on everyday boring tasks.

Which industries will be the best in RPA implementation?
    – It's hard to pick a particular industry. Nowadays, computers are presents in almost every industry and RPA could be implemented successfully in all of them.

Do you use this type of solutions to manage your daily tasks?
    – I can name only one. I have simple script to connect to university cloud and update all the relevant courses on my pc. I can download all the needed stiff with one click.

What daily tasks would you like to automatize?
    – Maybe checking if new articles are posted on this blog as I alwayes forgot to do it :)

  2. Do you prefer using automatic machines?
-There is nothing worse in this world than a long queue

Do you have any idea how to about create a new type of automation machine?
-I did some DIY automation (self driving bot with camera) out of curiosity to see what the fuss is all about but other than that i have no idea what it takes to create some complicated automation

What do you think about RPA ?
-It is already happening since Industrial Revolution :D

Is this a threat or a chance for development?
-Both, similar to AI, if not used with caution can be a reason of big disruption (unemployment)

Which industries will be the best in RPA implementation?
-Lets just hope that no one will automate IT any time soon :)

Do you use this type of solutions to manage your daily tasks?
-I do not organize my daily tasks in any fashion but i automate repeatable tasks with Powershell scripts (extracting data from portals, troubleshooting servers etc.)

What daily tasks would you like to automatize?
-Making breakfast and cleaning (there are already vacuum cleaners with LIDAR (similar to autonomous cars) technology)

  3. For example, if I have a choice between self-service cashes or regular ones I’ll always choose the first option. Maybe not because of modern tech fascination but I just don’t like when people are doing simple stuff for me when I can do it on my own. I would like to have any idea to make a new type automation machine, but I don’t have any at the moment. I have idea for RPA software which can do some boring parts of my job… Sweet dreams… I think that RPA is a good idea and it’s both a threat and a chance for development. I know few persons who like their boring job which can be done by algorithms, so they can treat RPA as a threat. Otherwise if they abandon their current recurrent job and start to develop their skills it can be a chance. I think the greatest industry for RPA develop is big data analysis and others related to data analysis. During daily tasks I don’t use lot of automation because my company’s laptop is locked on every type of software which differs form preinstalled by IT guys. I am helping myself with plugins for web browser but it’s not any game changers. And in the end; Yes, I know this cartoon. It was one out my favorites in childhood. I was always wondering how great it would be to have machine which can wash me and put clothes on me without my interference right after I get up.

    - It depends on the situation, i think i can lett same of boring tasks to machines, but I need to have hard proof that they do it on the same level or even better than humans.

Do you have any idea how to about create a new type of automation machine?
-Oh, i'm not good at this type of products. in my opinion everything goes in correct way and we need more time. After this, world will see new generation of automatic machines

What do you think about RPA ?
    - I like this idea. People shud do more intresting thinks than borring simple factory production.
Is this a threat or a chance for development?
-obviously chance ! Humans are to inteligents to do simple tasks, let robots do this and we can use this free time to invite new solution for the world
Which industries will be the best in RPA implementation?
    - I tink industries wich produce some thinks on very high volumen. There's a lot of factory with hundreds of people just because no one invite machine wich can do this production

  5. Do you prefer using automatic machines?
Yes I like to use automatic machines.

Do you have any idea how to about create a new type of automation machine?
I don't know how to create stuff like this but I'd love to have some machine to go out with my dog.
Unfortunately all I can create would be rope from the balcony.

What do you think about RPA ?
    I like it, it's future!

Is this a threat or a chance for development?
It's a big chance for development but also big responsibility for reptilians at the steering wheel.

Which industries will be the best in RPA implementation?
By the time it will be bigger sector. Probably start from shops, posts etc throught more complicated factories.
Later probably even medical sector will be RPAed.

Do you use this type of solutions to manage your daily tasks?
Yes I'm doing what I can to make my life easier.

What daily tasks would you like to automatize?
I'm not a fan of buying food and cooking so I dream about some machine that makes cheap and healthy meals.
For me it's just a waste of time..

  6. I think RPA is a hard topic to talk about. It’s because automation will replace a lot of jobs in the nearest future, even it’s boring. What we do with people who will by fired because of robot. I’m interested in RPA, because now I’m implementing robots farm for one of the biggest company in Poland. I’ not sure what I think about RPA so it’s hard to say if it is a threat or a chance. I think that financial sector is a good one to RPA implementation. Yes, I use automation to manage my daily tasks. Even if talk about want to take our money from a bank, ATM is our first thought. I dream about machine which can prepare a meal for me. I do not like think what I should eat and how to do it.

  7. Do you prefer using automatic machines?
Well, maybe I don't prefer but sometimes its the only way to get some snack of coffee, so I use like let say once a week.

Do you have any idea how to about create a new type of automation machine?
I honestly don't know, I think most of this kind machines are already created so its hard to figure out a new one.

What do you think about RPA ?
I think its a good idea to replace people from the repeating work. They would have time and an opportunity to think bigger and do more creative work as You mentioned.

Is this a threat or a chance for development?
I think its both, many people could lost jobs and it might create a problem for them. If everything will be automated maybe there will be need to create a minimum social payment paid by the government for people without a job cause then the job market might be full.

Which industries will be the best in RPA implementation?
I think the industries with the job that are the easiest to implement algorithms for, something like IRS for example.

Do you use this type of solutions to manage your daily tasks?
I use only the calendar on my phone to manage my daily tasks.

What daily tasks would you like to automatize?
I would like to have automatized cleaning my whole house, that would be really comfortable :)

  8. Do you prefer using automatic machines?
I definitely prefer to get something done quickly by the machine than in the window at the office. However, most things can be done online, transfers, buying tickets - those for concert and public transport. So I usually choose such solutions

Do you have any idea how to about create a new type of automation machine?
I have no idea for a new one. But I would love to implement vending machines in restaurants for ordering meals. Something like this works in most pubs in Japan. In Poland, I saw it only in mcdonalds.

What do you think about RPA ?
It sounds interesting. I would add optimization of the workflow. Sometimes companies have very complex workflows. Such a bot could analyze when a given path is least used and just eliminated it.

Is this a threat or a chance for development?
I think this is a chance. I wrote about it in a presentation, technologies replacing people cause that new fields of knowledge arise with new jobs.

Which industries will be the best in RPA implementation?
We now use IT in every field, so I think in every industries. Only creative work is currently dominated by man.

Do you use this type of solutions to manage your daily tasks?
At work, I use powershell scripts to automate unnecessary clicking.

What daily tasks would you like to automatize?
Definitely cleaning up. I am thinking about buying a vacuum cleaner iRobot Roomba;)

  9. Automatic machines take over more and more of our everyday life and I'd love to see and use them even more. Taking cash from ATM (if neccessary, I'd rather use my card), buying public transport tickets, receiving online orders via services like Paczkomaty or new automation ideas, like food-based delivery alternative to Paczkomaty called 'Rano zebrano' and their 'Coolomat' services.
I have a few ideas on automatic machines too but I'd rather have them for myself for time being (or at least until I can create some sort of proof-of-concept).
As for RPA and concepts revolving around it – I think it’s our future. We need to – as you’ve pointed out – make it possible for individuals to focus on creative part of their work. I’d rather have areas like customer service focusing on actual customer, instead of all the parts in between. Some goes for delivery, logistics, sales etc. Whole RPA is a great point of start of rethinking how workplace works and on what should we really focus on. At the beginning there will be fear and denial but soon people will find out that human as supervisor rather than human as actual worker is much better concept.
For daily automation of my everyday work – for home computing I’ve tried things like Zapier and they simply didn’t work out. I tend to change a lot my way of approaching everyday tasks (I like to experiment a lot with solutions) so it simply does not suit me.
But! For work environment I tend to automate and script all the things possible, as I do programming for living. I do that for others too, simply because focusing on a problem should be top priority, not tools and ways you need to fight your way through.

  10. I really like automatic machines and all automatic stuff. Recently I've bought Roomba vacuum cleaner. Probably this is the best product which I bought last year. Maybe because I have a dog and I don't like do vacuum every day ;)
Of course, this is not perfect, but it helps (a lot) :D
On the other hand I really prefer software automatic stuff. For example if I do the same thing a couple of times I try to find a resolution which helps me do it faster. Or even write some kind of program by myself. So as you said it is called RPA. I haven't heard about it - thanks :)
Also I tried to use Zapier, but for me there where only few things I needed. So I stopped using it.

  11. for my this is a very big chance. I don't like boring works, and machines can do it for me :) but this works in the basic things. but basic thing for me can be vacuuming the floor or mixing the dough. for someone else, driving a car can be done by a machine. basic tasks are becoming more and more demanding. the question is whether machines are better than people. and here the topic gets complicated. man makes good coffee, maybe the vending machine is doing better. but whether such a theory will always work? no. you need to know the border

    1. Yes, hard border are is important. Do you often make coffee yourself (without any electrical devices)? Probably not.

  12. As there’s a lot of types of automatic machines, it’s hard to say whether I prefer to use them or not. Introducing most of them has been a fantastic solution and a true salvation. They work 24/7 so you can buy, let’s say, a bus ticket at literally every hour of the day (or night). It’s brilliant! On the other, the process of buying coffee from something as heartless as a vending machine, to me seems to be missing something. I like the idea of introducing RPA into more industries, though. I suppose that in most cases people working in factories or doing simple tasks in the administration area aren’t really satisfied with their career. Have you heard about the basic income project? Part of the idea is replacing people with machines and assuring them a regular payout. Imagine how much time we would gain to expand our passions! Many of my previous life decisions were made because of or taking into account the money matter. I think many talented people could spread their wings wider when not tied up to this practical part of life.
As for daily tasks automation, I would definitely go for automatic cleaning machines.

  13. I think most of us have heard about AI Sophia, first droid with human's appearance who said that she wants to destroy humans.
If you are not familiar with this case, please click the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0_DPi0PmF0

And actually, that is what worries me the most. I do really apriciate all that automate work which is done for us by daily used programs and automatic machines. I can't recall any specified ones now, but I'm sure that I use something like that, even without my concious. There is no point for people to spend 24 hours just for selling for example chocolate bars.
However, I don't understand why people want to create AI, let them do high responsibility tasks or even let them teach us.
There will always be someone who will try to create a virus or a bug, maybe just for fun, but it could be tragic in consequences.
Tesla tried their driver-less cars, and hakers showed them what they are able to do.
Nevertheless, I do really apriciate technological development made in recent years and I think that there are many areas, like medicine, in which such solutions will certainly be very helpful.

And I always was a huge fan of the Jetsons ;)

  14. I Haven't heared about RPA before, but I think it is big chance for development to get more money
I think that big corporations will put hand on RPA and look is it work properly. Then factories will try this out and so on.
Machines are common in our daily routine. We always use computers, mobile phones and robots for makin cakes. Without them people would be like in stone era. It is very hard for us without any kind of machine, because we like to make our life easier. What is more during producing machines we make our skills better and better.
If I could add one machine it'd be definetely machine for making legal money :)
