Week 6 (5-11.01.2015): NEW YEAR`S EVE

NEW YEAR`S EVE

At the beginning I want to wish you a happy new year Everybody knows that the New Year`s Eve is the last night of the year – from 31 December to 1 January. People all over the world have a different way to celebrate this date. There are some traditions and customs connected with greeting  a new year.

Where do people celebrate the New Year`s Eve?

As we can see in the graph below the most popular way is to celebrate it with  close friends or your family . I really like something more than low-key celebrations so a home party with a friend suits me every year. The other way to celebrate is going to a club/bar, an organized bigger party/event or  staying at home and watching TV - Close to 1 billion people choose this method to greet the new year. If we sit in a comfortable sofa we have a wide spectrum of events to watch and I hope everyone agrees with me -  the  most recognized is the Times New Square Event.

The most popular New Year’s Events

Everyone knows about those events but I want to bring you interesting facts. The party at the New York ‘s Time Square has a 4000 year long tradition. One million people every year wait for the fall of The Time Square’s Ball and also 2000 pounds of confetti. The ball consists of 2688 crystals, 32 000 led lights and its overall weight is about 5500 kg !!!.  Other popular events take place in London (London Eye), Paris (Eifel Tower), Rio De Janeiro (Copacabana Beach) or Sydney (Sydney Harbour). This info graphics doesn’t include this year`s best event in Dubai. They have broken the record with the number of fireworks at the New Year’s celebration. Of course it was connected with a long list of artistic shows and other things that had been prepared for the best event in the world. You can see what  it looked like at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF8Ln47Qqz0

New Year`s Resolutions

Over 45 % of Americans set the new year’s resolutions. As we can see above, the most popular is to lose weight, eat healthy and quit smoking. The interesting thing is that 3 out of on 4 people never achieve their resolution. It shows that it’s really hard to do resolutions. Many people set multiple resolutions but resolutions are not connected with happiness. People who set resolution every year aren’t more happy than others but the truth is if we are less happy we are more likely to set resolution.  Absolutely the best place to see the New Year`s resolutions is the gym. When the new year starts the number of people there increase unbelievably  but soon it turns back to normal.

What do people do at midnight?

Of course it depends where we are but everyone likes to countdown to midnight and toast with a glass of champagne. This is the most popular drink in the world at this time and the tradition is to pop open the Champaign at midnight. Apart from wishing other people a happy new year we really like to kiss someone else but not everyone could do that because 22% admitted to falling asleep before midnight.

The New Year is currently going so keep with your resolutions and do everything to make this year better than the previous one. At the end please watch this video  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1-7L47A1ew  It is quite funny but every country has other traditions or customs to celebrate a new year…

  1. Thank you and best wishes to you too. Happy New Year!;)
I have already heard about those facts related with celebration of new year and I totally agree with that. Unfortunately, it is pretty hard to fulfil New Year’s Resolutions so I didn’t make any of them… Of course I have some plans and wishes but I decided not to link it with 1th of January.

Someday I would like to be a part of one of the most popular New Year’s Events – RIO would be perfect! I guess that must be an unforgettable experience to celebrate New Year with so many people in such a beautiful place.

  2. Happy 2015 to you too!

Hope all of you, who have New Year’s Resolutions, will be strong in your will and keep focused as long as you can. As Tomek I've already read similar article, but nevertheless very good job!

Personally I really like Spanish tradition: "Las doce uvas de la suerte" / "The twelve grapes of luck", where they eat a grape with each bell strike at midnight of New Year's Eve. Lovers feed themselves with those, which is kind of romantic if you ask me. The same goes with Mexico, but besides grapes, they have other interesting ways of celebrating (http://www.haciendatresrios.com/special-occasions/2011-in-mexico-11-mexican-traditions-for-the-new-year/).

Sorry for the quality, but this is the clip I was looking for: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAIqQaXpVWw

    1. Thanks for your comment. Referring to different traditions and customs connected with celebrate New Year I’ve found something about our Polish national practices to do that. Key words are “Sylwester”, “Do siego roku” and “Bigos”. For more information please explore that article: http://www.123newyear.com/newyear-traditions/poland.html .

  4. Happy New Year.

I actually had a chance to watch fireworks show in London, and I must say it was spectacular.
This year also Dubai has nice show and one of the most disappointing ones were in Paris.
About resolutions, everyone have some, losing weight, quitting smoking or something like that.
I will quote one of the showman: It's good to have resolutions, you feel comfortable with them, you can make same ones every year. Who needs to think about new resolutions every year? Never fulfill your resolutions and be happy.

  5. I wish you all the best for 2015 and I hope that this year will be the best in your life!
This New Year's Eve was one of the best in my life and I know that 2015 will be even better than 2014! I went to 2 parties on New Year's Eve so I'm in the minority of that statistics. I got 7 resolutions for this year and I'm doing well with them. I'm standing strong and focused to keep all these resolutions till 2016 will approach. I keep my fingers crossed for all your resolutions guys! Hope we will stay strong the whole year! ;)

  6. Best wishes for you too!

I've made my first ever New Year's Eve resolution - quit smoking and i hope to keep it standing.

As for the greatest parties - I would very much like to be in Sydney party, because fireworks compose magnificently with the landscape with Sydney Opera in the horizon and it's a sight to see for my eyes.

    1. I know something about this resolution – it`s really hard to do that and completely stop smoking. Some time ago I tried with unsatisfactory result. Maybe it wasn`t right time but deep in myself I’m preparing a new attempt. Well done Mateusz but be careful – smoking is like a snake in a grass. One cigarette and all of your effort could go down the drain

    2. I've tried to quit smoking many times. Unfortunately I have never made it.

This year I am trying again, but I have a new strategy which I called 'If you smoke do something good'. For each cigarette I smoke, I will donate 10 zł for a charity.

Hope I gonna make it this time :)

Happy New Year to You all!

    1. You are right – it`s mistake. Of course celebrate New Year at all dates back nearly 4000 years. The Time Square event – precisely Ball Drop is there since 1907.

  9. Everyone is celebrating the new year's eve like it's something special and for me personally it's just another day and a party like any other. I don't make any resolutions because I know myself all too well, and I know that if I want to do something I'll just start doing it but when I don't feel like it, planning to do so won't change much.

    1. I partly agree with you – another opportunity to party but look at this celebrating from other side. New Year`s Eve has a unique atmosphere and in my opinion if we leave out party case all of the extra effects like fireworks etc. we could see maybe two times per year…

  10. Lol thanks. Now I know to not to go to London or Paris for New Year's Eve. I was planning to go to Paris in 2013 and London 2014. Statistics says clearly a no-go... :-)) because of too many people going there every year. I am happy now that I have spent my time with lovely people here in Poland in my lovely small hometown :-)) what I do at midnight ??!?!! I am busy with fireworks :D everyone says every year to not to buy fireworks and I always do that secretly and always there is a fun and makes everyone happy :-)

    1. Fireworks are extremely dangerous and I`ve seen a lot of accidents related to them so I left fire this out for another players. Maybe you are right with crowd of people in instance cities but be there could be something new and I don’t eliminate future trip to those parties

      Delete
    2. John :-( why would you do that to me? Really? Seriously dude? Fireworks are fun! Of course you have to be really careful and I hate when someone is trying to act cool or tough and keeps his head above the fireworks when firing. I always keep it safe and my friends has to be in the safe area.

  11. Thank you for a nice presentation. Most of these facts are new for me, so great to know new things.

I prefer to celebrate New Year on a party with my friends. Especially at a home party. I don't make any resolutions, beacause when I wan't to do something or stop doing it, every day i a good day for a begining.
And of course, best wishes in 2015!

  12. Ha ha! I laughed loud when I read "Times New Square Event" in second paragraph. I think you compiled Times Square with Times New Roman.
I think I brake statistics because I spend last New Years Eve in work.
But to be sincere I don't really like New Years Eve. I don't like imperative of celebration. I don't like big events with shitty popstars. So maybe it is not bad I had to work.
Nevertheless I would prefer to spend it with my close ones.

  13. I don't like organised events for New Year. Going to a bar or big party at the club also usually doesn't suit me. I'm not a master of ceremonies but I like when NY is a little different that ordinary party. And you can easly call me that kind of person.
I prefer low-key presentation with close friends. This year we were at a little bigger party at my girl friend house. It was very nice and I got super drunk.
For about resolutions I don't have really any, I just do what I need to.
If I have to choose one it would be probably to travel more but unfortunately
it match with money and money match with working and it doesn't really match
with travel. Eh wish to be Brad Pitts son. :)
    Best wishes for 2015 mate!

  14. I usually don't care about NYE, because I don't feel as if it was any different from other days of the year - it also becomes problematic, when everyone happens to have super special plans for that day and it is nearly impossible to run any errands, meet up with one particular person in normal circumstances, etc. Coming from that, I also don't have any new year resolutions.

Also those poor animals, with fireworks everywhere around...
