Week 7 (19-25.01.2015): HEY! WHAT DOES YOUR TATTOO MEAN?

Shut up!
Nowadays this is a typical answer to the question from the title.
Why is that?

Let’s find out!

Over recent decades the definition of the tattoo has changed dramatically. Once the tattoo was associated with a scar on the body, which had something. Something that was very important in the life of a man bearing a given "scar".  Nowadays we call it scarification. But today we are not going to talk about scarification.

In the modern world getting a tattoo means getting your body covered with special paint which is injected under your skin with needles. There are many types and styles of tattoos nowadays.

The most simple but a very interesting style is a „prison” tattoo,  because of its long tradition. Prison tattoos have always had a meaning. The decision about getting a tattoo and which exactly is made by the inmates. So they have to be specific, because there are strict rules to be followed.

If you are actually interested in the meaning of these tattoos, you can check it at http://www.crimelibrary.com/photogallery/prison-tattoo-field-guide.html?curPhoto=1 you won’t be surprised when you go jail. Just kidding… :-)

Another interesting style was created by the Japanese gang which is very famous because of their tattoos. The gang members get their body tattooed during their whole life. The gang is called Yakuza and I guess that you’ve heard about them. Every tattoo of each gang member has to be unique and is connected with their life story. It also costs hell a lot of money and must be really painful.

The average healing time of any tattoo is 2 weeks, at that time it hurts and itches but no matter what! You cannot touch it! Forget about sleeping on tattooed back for 2 weeks or more. But tattooing can be very addictive. There are many addictions like trying to make your tattoo as perfect as possible. Because over the years your taste can change dramatically, you probably will change your tattoo many times. The other addiction can be that feeling when the needle sticks into your body and a machine makes the „bzzzz” sound. It is a very relaxing feeling mixed with a slight pain compared to a pinch.

How about now?

Nowadays tattoos are nothing really special. I know a lot of people who’s got one or more tattoos on their body. From the crazy people to entrepreneurs, you wouldn’t even say that a person has a tattoo, because he is not really a „crazy” enough person to think so. But everyone can have a tattoo and it is nothing bad. Tattoos are no longer associated with gangs and prison. The technology of the machines has really changed and the artists can actually make you a tattoo of whatever you want and it will look really fresh, beautiful and colorful. Even the black color has changed to its real blackness and it looks shiny.

Today tattoos are more about having the coolest graphic on the body that a human being can possibly ever think of. So you can see that people want to have a lot of colours and the graphic reminds some kind of comics.

I personally like to look at cool huge tattoos because I consider this some kind of art., like looking at paintings, but probably I will never get one!

  1. Very interesting topic and „trendy”, that’s for sure. Just to answer your questions - I’m very open minded about tattoos. I do not own one, but I don’t see anything bad in them – maybe in the future I will decide for something like this: (http://www.tattooartists.org/Images/FullSize/000208000/Img208842_juventus.jpg), but not yet. The biggest problem I see with tattoos is either bad art or bad placement (http://weknowmemes.com/2014/09/25-of-the-worst-face-tattoos-ever/). Teenagers are often getting one on the hands/neck, employers don’t want to hire such people and they feel mistreated (https://verkoren.files.wordpress.com/2014/03/lqfjsee.jpg?w=705). I think it’s very important to plan the placement, the studio and be sure that kind of art won’t cause problems in the future.

The best thing, that would comment on your article would be stand-up comedy act by one of my favourite performers - Russell Peters (http://youtu.be/Vfy1vRckdLQ?t=44m54s). It’s quite long, but it matches the topic perfectly – there is a part about prison tattoos, their popularity and meanings.

    1. Hey, thanks! :D Oh I see what you did there! The Juventus tattoo is actually very specific but cool! nowadays you can always erase the tattoo with a laser. The best practice to check if you will not get tired of the tattoo is to hang it above your bed, so everyday you wake up the first thing you see is the tattoo. If this gets you sad or angry, or gives you some kind of a bad feelings - leave it, this is what will happen after you get it on your body :D Ohhhh someone's gonna get hurt real bad.... :-)))))) Lolz actually Russell says the same thing as my presentation lolz :-)) thx

  2. What do you think about tattoos and tattooed people?

Well, frankly speaking I have nothing against it as far as it's reasonable. I mean, nothing on your forehead etc. Another thing which I disapprove are tattoos with name of partner... that's just sick... I can handle name of children but not partner...

Do you have a tattoo? What kind of a tattoo and where?

No, I haven't. But sometimes I'm wondering about it.

If you ever thought about getting a tattoo what would it be and where?

As guess that it would be small ManUtd logon on neck. Something like logo on back side of the official shirt. Take a look:

I love ManU so that's a great tattoo :D There are some websites for tattoo simulations so you can always just check it out if it's okay :-)

  4. I have nothing against tattoos. I'm trying not to judge people by their look.
If someone have nice tattoo I really like it.
Yes I have 4 tattoos on my arms. I have pretty big distance for myself and one
of my tats was made when I just visited friend who is tattoo artist.
Let me think about the meaning. I like classics so I have skull (memento mori),
some bird like hawk (freedom I like freedom), an eye (third eye to see better)
and heart (all you need is love tururu). Haha I think it's good explaination.
Yes for sure I will more tattoos in the future. I like them.

  5. I've seen many amazing tattoos on arms and far too many bad ones. Personally, I don't have any, I was thinking about it, but there is a problem with tattooes when you are older and your skin is more floppy.
There is even a show about it:

    Look at this as well:

God, they are horrible. I prefer tattoos on arms and legs, tattoos on head are just stupid.
And who is the most famous guy with tattoos? In USA I bet for Michael Scofiels from Prison Break :)
Btw. Look at him : http://images.luuux.com/0000F49152E92E6609BE287C4BD11C87/middle/kat_3.png

  6. First of all, nice presentation. Clear, simple and very pleasant to read. Good job.

I don't like tatoos in general. But some of them are really nice. Especially that with a lot of colors and kind of artistic vision in them.

I don't have any tatoo and I think I will never have one.

  7. Hey, thanks for the kind word :-) Anyway we are not here to even try to convince someone to change his mind, so I totally respect your opinion. There are some negatives about getting a tattoo :-)))

  9. Very good pictures yakuza tatto, I like too big tattoes on body, no metter where.
About tattoos, I think they are fine, if that tattoos is some kind of symbol connected with life style or situation in life, and if its a good looking tatto its ok, but if tatto was made for body decoration, and this tatto say nothing for Me is disgusting.
I haven't got any tatto, but few years ago I think about it. I wandet have a somthing gothic symbol on My thig, but at the moment I think, I don't need this:)

  10. Really interesting one! There is a saying "If a body is a temple, why shouldn't we decorate it?" which I consider a really good one. Tattoos are making our bodies look awesome. Obviously I'm talking about those ones made with certain thought and with special meaning, not just for having tattoo. I would like to have few tattoos on my right arm connected with my life which in the end would end up as a sleeve, anyway it might be an obstacle to what I'm doing in my life right now.
I like people with tattoos and I like to ask them what their tattoos actually mean, usually it turns out either awesome conversation or a funny talk in general :) What really made me interested is Yakuza tradition of tattooing members' bodies with original art, seems like a really fantastic way to "decorate our temple" :)

    1. Actually you can go and find on google some statistics about what employers says about tattoos in some different jobs and stuff like that. You will see that the approach really changed and there is no more fear about having a tattoo and being a head of department or things like that. I'd say even more, if your job title sounds serious and you have a tattoo, probably people will say about you that in that whole "hardcore job title" stuff you still find the space for YOURSELF and you have that distance and balance in life, which is positive. If you really think about getting a tattoo, go and get it :-) All in all there is a technology to remove it. One last thing ! Thanks for your opinion :D And yes I really love Yakuza tattoos, they are so unique and actually a real work of art :-) Japanese quality... etc...

  11. Very good and interesting article. To be honest, lately this is a very hot topic in my house :) My fiancee is starting learning to become a proffesional tatooer so I'm still listening about stuff, technics, examples etc.
In my opinion we have 2 kinds of people with tatoos.
    1. the one that think this is a cool and they look awsome with them
    2. the one that did tatoo for some important reason - important for them, not for someone

Beside that tatoos may make people life better, can give them selfconfidence, help to accept themselves. It is a very hard topic, everybody can have a bit diffrent aproach to them.

I like tatoos, I even plan to make on - I'm the kind of person that needs a good reason and motivation for it so I'm still looking the perfect one :)

    1. I guess when your fiancee gets the whole equipment you will be the practice model for her hahaha :D She will force you to do that otherwise she will think you don't love her :-(((((( lolz . Anyway that is a cool thing :-) It is always cool to know your tattoo artist, it's something important, I can't actually explain it, but you have to show your tattoo artist that you believe him. Simple things can do, like smoking cigarettes together, sharing music taste and things like that.

  12. I generally like the idea of tattoos, whether they mean something or are just for looks. The only thing I hate are cliche tattoos like cheese sentences or infinity signs.
I don't have a tattoo YET but I'm sure I'll get one some day. I just haven't found the right thing that's so important I'll carry it on my skin for the rest of my life. I suppose I would get one on my arm, but I need to get buff first :p

  13. Tattoos – hmm… if I ever had a tattoo it will be something more than slogan. Tattoo in my opinion must be connected with some values in our live – for instance family. Other options doesn’t suit me. Moreover whole bodies or parts of it with tattoos doesn’t look spectacular for me and we need to remember that tattoos are for all lifelong so decision about doing something like than must be considered. I know nowadays we could erase tattoo by laser technology but not for 100% of its visibility…

Johnny B Goode and Johnny is not going to get a tattoo - I know you well Johnny and I know that somewhere deep down in your heart there is a vision of a tattoo on your body lolz but you have to listen to your inner voice :D anyway the technology goes on and on and nothing will stop it. Actually the laser will erase the whole tattoo but it takes for example a year to erase it - but hey if you really want to erase you will do.

  15. One thing that puzzles me about tattoos (owned not by Yakuza or some inmates) is their placement on the back, especially. What is the purpose of having one on your back, while you can't get up and admire it without the help of two mirrors or a camera? =] It's funny that the tattoos on the back are generally the best looking, as there is a whole lot of room to work on.
Benson Henderson is the first guy that comes up with a great tattoo on his back. The wings make a great impression of moving themselves when he fights. Shame he doesn't see it live :)

It will be work of art so any chinese signs, names of exes or crests of sports club don't do it. ;P That is the kind of tatoo I absolutely cannot understand.
