Let’s start with some explanation what is the IMCF. In Wikipedia we can read (longer and more detailed version please see link below): “International Medieval Combat Federation was founded in 2013, and now the organisation attracts for various competitions hundreds of fighters from 26 countries. IMCF is a global historical full contact sport fighting movement, in which fighters use historically accurate reproductions of medieval and early modern armours and blunted weapons to engage in competitive fights according to authentic historical tournament rules. First World Championship in 2014 took place in the 15th century Belmonte Castle in Spain, the second tournament in 2015 was held in Malbork Castle in Poland, and this year championship location is Montemor-o-velho in Portugal.

IMCF World Championships 2015 Promo - Malbork Castle, Poland

It is really hard to describe the atmosphere that I experienced in Malbork last year during IMCF World Championships – it was my first tournament as a member of a crew. From a tourist perspective, you can only see fights and a small part of the camps of all nations that participate in it.  From the re-enactment side , you can go to every camp and talk with everyone, you can sit there and spend two or more hours listening about history – presented in a completely different  than you know from school. You might as well learn historical songs from all over the world and later on, during another medieval event, present it to others. The atmosphere and meeting all those people are amazing parts of this kind of event. Because of those astonishing feelings and excitement that overwhelmed me while I was watching fights with our great National Team  I became their devoted fan and started to support them during each and every tournament, even when I cannot be there myself.

Last year our National Team won ten medals: 6 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze. That result put us first  in the global classification!

  2. 1. I had no idea about such competition, but I think it is a great initiative.Competitors must be very strong, they have very heavy armor. To fight wearing them, they for sure have to hard work in training the force, condition and strength. Cool, that Poland is successful in this "sport". I will keep my fingers crossed for our team :)
    2. Yes, I have a few. First of all, I love to travel. I like visiting new places, getting to know new people, their customs, languages and cuisines. In every summer I try to visit some nice places. For now I only visited European countries, but in the future I would like to visit the countries of South America and Asia. Besides traveling I also like to cook. When I have time I try to make new dishes and try new flavors.

  3. 1. For me, It's much more interesting than other, more commercial sports like a football + It's a part of our tradition (such events were held in our country long time ago, i.e. on 15th of July 1410 ;)).
    2. Traveling and visiting places strongly connected with a history of a mankind + going to concerts.

  5. 1. I find it interesting, i take it they fight with blunt weapons? Is there a lot of injuries? Is medical staff also included in reenactment?
    2. Mine is speedball - type of paintball, more competitive, played on a rectangular field in 5v5 format. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=br1bJUx8rLo this is from last years World Cup - final game.

    1. Ad 1. Yes, of course they use not sharpened weapons, but still it happens that somebody gots injured and we need to give them medical care. On Championships or other tournaments organizations always inform nearest hospital about such event and ask for they assistance on field. On the other hand on events where battle will be just act some of re-enactment groups uses linen bandages to make it more real, but still if something really bad happens there always will be some rescue team.
Ad 2. This is first time when I hear about this discipline. Thank you! :) From this video I can see that it has kind of dynamics that makes me love medieval combats.

  6. 1. What do you think about medieval combats?
As I mentioned before it must be hard to fight while wearing all this iron.
It does not appeal to me too much, so I will not be a big fan, but I respect these people for the effort. Also definitely running and fighting in armor is better than standing under the block of flats and drinking beer :P

    2. Do you have a hobby? Please write about it.
I'm interested in almost everything, so I have no time for one specific thing... :)

  7. 1. What do you think about medieval combats?

I think this is an amazing hobby and this is certainly a fantastic experience to be a part of such an event. Unfortunately, in order to take part in the fighting you must have a good financial background. Equipment costs are definitely high. I think it is also an interesting event from the perspective of the viewer. You truly get a feeling of the medieval times.

    2. Do you have a hobby? Please write about it.

I like to play board games together with friends. It relaxes me and allows for social meetups. A great advantage of playing complex games is that you feel like you to plan a unique strategy each time.

  10. 1. I knew that there was such competitions but never had a chance to watch or read more about it, so thanks for the article. Moreover, it's great to know that Poles are one of the bests. Anyway, I must admit it doesn't appeal to me at all and would not spend my spare time to participate in similar event.

    2. Well, I do have some hobbies. However, they change from time to time. Recently I spend quite a lot of my free time on juggling and learning how to ride on a unicycle.

Wow! There is a female category! :D I didn't expect that :D but i think it's not my cup of tea to be honest.

    2. Do you have a hobby? Please write about it.

I love music- creating it, listening to it, playing instruments and collecting records - i mean the ACTUAL BLACK WAX. Last month i spent almost all my money for vinyl so it is my hobby as well as it is my addiction :D

  13. 1. What do you think about medieval combats?
I don't think that it's a good idea, it's like wrestling, fake fight, but on the other hand, I really appreciate battle reconstructions, which is a much better performance in my opinion, as it is not focused only on a battle but also about historical outfits, following strategy etc.
    2. Do you have a hobby? Please write about it.
I have many hobbies, one of them is mountain climbing, I just love everything which is related with mountains. Next year I would like to improve my skills and take 2 - 3 weeks camp in Georgia, right now I'm collecting a crew :) as it's not easy to convince friends.

    1. Ad 1. I don't know anything about wrestling, but I feel slightly offended in behalf of our National Team. Did those videos looks for you like 'simulation'? I can assure you that this kind of championships are not fake fights.
Of course there are 'fights' like Grunwald anniversary or another anniversaries like siege of Toruń are directed acts.

  14. Pardon my language, but that's a sport that takes having some serious balls! Going out in the ring to (long)sword fight seems like a dangerous, but a cool thing to do. Especially that in this form it's not an empty violence thing, but something that comes from deep passion for history and takes some serious knowledge. I guess that also answers your first question : )
Refering to the 2nd one- I do! Apart from my job as a programmer (which luckily is also my hobby) I do some other, less nerdy stuff ; ) I love doing sports, especially playing volleyball and I do it everytime I find a spare moment and a few people to play with :)

I think that is very interesting things. People whose doing this combat must be more fit and strong than people whose do another combat. It's great things.
