  1. I have heard about many tries to define beauty and (imao) it is impossible to find one adequate answer for everybody. The world population is estimated to be 7.2 billion, also is made up of thousands of ethnic groups so how can we find the one competent proportion for everybody?

  2. I guess each of us have some kind of pattern what beauty is, but we can't talk about beauty in overall. I'm sure that we don't choose beauty person only base on appearance. The most important are feelings. Of course there is some schema created by media (you know all that stuff 90/60/90 etc) but everyone have own taste (at least should have).

  3. Not so long time ago I saw Frederic Doazan’s animation called “Supervenus” (http://www.cosmopolitan.pl/omg/1393/tak-sie-konczy-dazenie-do-idealu or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxSTD1495WQ) about nowadays beauty and this short film is a good commentary to this topic.

I’m always a bit sceptical, while reading articles like this, but I/we cannot cheat biology, culture and our personality. I think those are three main factors, which defines our preferences. Biology – wider hips, full breast, rather curved than straight shapes – our subconscious is trying to search for a perfect, strong mother for potential offspring. Culture – all we see in media, surrounding world etc. This factor can be easily covered only by this image - http://i1.pudelekx.pl/45bf249263a986d6f78f46b168c50930ac162508/odbyt13921417356318-jpg
And for sure in time it will change once again as it used to (http://jestkultura.pl/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/wazne-1170x658.png). The third factor – personality. It’s not only that if you are calm and quiet, you probably won’t be searching for party-liking Barbie type, but our memories, tastes, surroundings, all this creates a perfect world to us and our own ideal beauty.

As for this article, I also read about Golden Ratio Proportions and a winner of Britain’s Perfect Face - Florence Colgate (http://www.goldennumber.net/facial-beauty-golden-ratio-florence-colgate/) . If you don’t want to read whole article, just watch this movie - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKWV-uU_SoI.

The canon of beauty changes a lot and in 20-30 years world would prefer something different than now, but to be honest, I really hope we won’t end up with this - http://szokblog.pl/Czy-to-nowy-kanon-pi%C4%99kna/Blog/1344867434329/.

And because it’s me, I cannot stop myself not to add something from South Park or Family Guy, so… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPSMoMvEgaY (I couldn’t find better quality)

  4. If we're talking about beauty "standards" I am thinking about general perception of a beautiful person (basically - a generation's canon). I think everyone has a slightly different definition of beauty formed by his preferences which as we all know are varying a lot (starting with hair color). It is simply impossible to accurately define the ultimate beauty for all people.

  5. I personally think that beauty cannot be measured in any way. Every person has his own taste and preferences. Of course media try to tell us what's beautiful and what's not but that's just a way to create the need for certain clothes, cosmetics etc. With enough effort you can give meaning to anything, so measuring model's eye height to chin lenght ratio isn't any indication of beauty to me. I'm not a huge fan of today's beauty standards and I hope people will learn that the best thing you can do is be yourself, not try to look identical to others.

  6. I don't agree, I personally thin that beauty can't be defined by science. In deciding whether something is beautiful or not, I think that affects the environment in which We live from young age. If We hear from the little that this thing is beautiful or not, then We build own opinion on it. On My opinion I agree with the statement that beauty drives creativity and the desire to create something along the lines of the ideal.

  7. Standards of beauty are changing all the time but I think that behavior proportion
contained in article stays unchanged. In my opinion everyone has another taste
and what else is interesting for him. Thats why sooner or later everyone will find a partner.

Prof. Daniel Cohen-Or from Tel Aviv University designed "machine" that improve beauty with the proportions by one click:

  8. I believe that beauty is our individual matter, even though the media are trying to create our image of the ideal man, we are in the depths of ourselves, and so we know what we like and what does not

  9. I think this is only part of the truth. Of course we`re biological progammed for some behaviours. But still we`re invdividuals so every one likes more diffrent things. There are some common things that are simillar for us, but still the combination may be simillar but I think it is never the same.

The whole thing about standards of beaty or scientific methods of understanding it is very normal thing for us people cause we always want to understand everything

  10. I agree my colleagues and their opinions about that beauty could not be strictly define. Everyone has other attitude to perceive the beauty and it’s so fantastic because people are different and everyone has right to happiness and to be respected. Look at the situation in fashion. Now the women with more curves are joined to worlds best campaign of the biggest companies. So we can’t say that the best are slim females and they only have a permission to be a super models, but we need to separate real life and communicates that mediums try to force. The beauty is state of mind and we need to remember this. I`ve also watched the Frederic Doazan’s animation and unfortunately this is a true. I don’t know where we are going but I know that isn’t a right way. Somewhere we`ve lost the real values and this could be bring fatal results.

  12. Bueaty definition described in the article is only an aproximation of many peoples perception. It will allow you to generally define if person is rather nice looking or rather ugly. But the devil is in the details. I believe human perception of others bueaty is much more complicated and cannot be reduced to simple estimation of some facial proportions. There is this huge amount of individual experiences gathered by every human that in result will shift their perception towards some features. Another factor is liking someone or not. I think people you like appear more attractive than people you hate, despite their actual look.

To sum up. I believe that trying to reason something about human perception using statistics gathered from large groups is just silly. You end up with bunch of corelations, and everyone knows that corelation does not imply causation.

  13. It's hard to define beauty. We have different point of views, different "tastes" and so on. We can't define standards in this matter. To summarize this article:
Beauty is no quality in things themselves: It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them; and each mind perceives a different beauty. One person may even perceive deformity, where another is sensible of beauty; and every individual ought to acquiesce in his own sentiment, without pretending to regulate those of others. (Hume 1757, 136)

  14. I agree that an avarage taste can be measured. I do not disagree with these studies as much as in the comments above. Of course beauty is a relative concept, but it can not be denied, that there is a wide range of people who fall under the 'bell-curve' of prettiness, like f.i. world-widely adored movie stars, supermodels, etc.

Of course these are just studies, and all kinds of human preferences are abviously subjective.

  15. I don’t believe beauty is something possible to be defined. We can describe beauty using mathematic and proportions but beauty is very individual case. Of course there are some patterns of beauty that changes in period of time. We can describe this patterns based on opinions. For example, most people think that Jessica Alba is beauty pattern but I’m sure that there is very small percentage who thinks she’s not. So, we can use science to describe beauty but it is still individual and always will be.

  16. I find deliberations about mathematical explanation of cannon of beauty quite interesting. Since it works with averages I think the ideal image made with this methods is also an average. And each human have his own ideal of beauty.

I personally cannot describe any known person as beautiful if only beauty I find in her is physical atractiveness. I need something more.

Another interesting method of using mathematic to desribe ideal beauty is here:

  17. Referring to an article about beauty I can say that beauty is really important. I can see that people considered to be beautiful have much more options from other people. It is really sad but the first impression seems to be the most important. We know that it takes something about 4 - 10 seconds. In that short time we can only see this person and maybe exchange a few words.

I can agree that there are canons of beauty and they are mostly controlled by media. They are giving us high-fly standards. People want to be on time with everything and that is the reason why beauty is so important.

I can't believe that beauty can be specified for all people because there are a lot of tastes. We cannot say about one strictly defined, which is acceptable for all people in the society.

  18. Probably like most people who commented above (of course, women were the most active LOL: D) I have to admit that there is no single definition of beauty and even I would say that there is no such thing as a definition of beauty. Because I think that even if we like a woman or a man, usually we can not tell why. Of course we say things as eyes, mouth, skin color, hair, but really all in all it was not that decides whether we like someone or not. I think it is more a spiritual dimension and made up from so many things that we are not able to define it. Whenever our mind makes the verification process whether we like someone or not, when we talk about him or her, we think about him or her or we see him or her, etc ... Of course haha what I wrote is a philosophical gibberish, because I do not deny nor will confirm what I wrote but it is always a fun guessing in a different way ... :-)
